    Eastern Railway Promotes Safer, Healthier Food At Stations With FSSAI Training

    In an important step towards promoting safer and healthier food at railway stations, Eastern Railway (ER) recently conducted a comprehensive Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) session. Held on December 29, 2023, this initiative aims to enhance food safety standards across ER’s vast network of stations, canteens, and other establishments. The workshop is part of the nationwide “Eat Right Campus and Station” campaign, spearheaded by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

    This training session, hosted at the Joint Food Safety Commissioner’s office in Kolkata, was attended by senior officials from Eastern Railway and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). Among the attendees were Dr Anupam Sett, Additional Chief Medical Director of ER, Dr Sanghamitra Chatterjee, Additional Chief Medical Superintendent of ER, and Manoj Kumar Singh, Chief General Manager of IRCTC Eastern Zone. The session was led by Professor Deborshi De, a leading food safety expert, in collaboration with Parikshan, FSSAI’s training partner.

    Kausik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of ER, highlighted that this training program was designed to support the implementation of FSSAI’s high standards for food safety. It aimed to equip Food Business Operators (FBOs) and food handlers from key stations, including the General Manager’s Staff Canteen, B.R. Singh Hospital, and stations like Kolkata, Baharampore Court, and Murshidabad, with essential skills and certification in food safety.

    The workshop covered a range of topics critical for ensuring the safety and quality of food. Participants learned about food safety regulations, hygiene practices, waste management, and the importance of promoting healthy and sustainable food. This aligns with FSSAI’s broader objectives to create awareness around nutritious, safe, and environmentally friendly food practices. The “Eat Right Campus” and “Eat Right Station” initiatives, which target campuses, hospitals, workplaces, and stations, aim to foster healthier eating habits among consumers while supporting India’s social and economic development.

    As one of the busiest and oldest railway zones in India, ER is committed to ensuring the health and safety of its passengers through various programs and initiatives. With this training, ER strengthens its efforts to provide safe, nutritious, and sustainable food across its extensive network.

    FSSAI, a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is responsible for regulating food safety in India. Through initiatives like “Eat Right Campus” and “Eat Right Station,” FSSAI continues to play a key role in promoting food safety and healthy eating habits across the country.

    SAFR Sports is making football safer for Virginia Tech and other institutions

    SAFR Sports technology company developed a helmet cover designed to protect athletes from severe head injuries.

    VIRGINIA, USA — Football is a game that many of us love and hold close to our hearts, but it could be safer. Th Sports technology company SAFR Sports is trying to achieve that, offering protection to young athletes through their latest helmet cover. 

    “What our product does is reduce the risk of concussion,” said SAFR Sports Board Chair Carlos Bradley. “Football is a collision sport and the game is continuing to get more and more violent.”

    Bradley is a former NFL linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Diego Chargers. He said wished this type of protection was around during his career. 

    “If this product was around in the 80’s when I was playing, I definitely believe there would be a lesser degree of CTE,” said Bradley. 

    SAFR’s CEO John Ziglinsky says their helmet cover tests better than any other helmet accessory on the market right now, including the Guardian cap, when it comes to concussion reduction at the college and high school levels. 

    “The helmet alone has a 60% chance of concussion. With the Guardian XT, there was a 50% chance, and with our SAFR helmet covers there’s an 8.9% chance.”

    Carolina Panthers tackle Ikem Ekwonu wore the SAFR Sports helmet cover throughout his career at NC State. 

    “In terms of how it feels you can’t tell a difference with having the cap on and having it off. I feel like we can really be trailblazers here in making the sport much safer,” Ekwonu told 13News Now. 

    SAFR Sports supplies customized helmet covers to many high schools across the country and universities like Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab revealed the SAFR helmet cover significantly reduces the risk of concussions against hits from all directions. 

    “Different positions are prone to different head impacts but across the board we saw reductions. We saw reductions at the low severity impacts, the front of the helmet that offensive lineman or a defensive lineman would see more frequently, but we also saw reductions on the hard impacts to the side of the helmets that you might see with a wide receiver,” said Virginia Tech Helmet Lab Director Steve Rowson. 

    “We’re really excited because we think this has huge possibilities for reducing the number of concussions in football,” said Virginia Tech Associate Sports Medicine Director Michael Goforth. 

    Virginia Tech sports medicine personnel hope to see more the SAFR Tech helmet cover in the NCAA. Ekwonu hopes to see it make its way to the NFL.

    Australia’s online dating industry adopts code of conduct to keep users safer

    MELBOURNE, Australia — A code of conduct will be enforced on the online dating industry to better protect Australian users after research found that three-in-four people suffer some form of sexual violence through the platforms, Australia’s government said on Tuesday.

    Bumble, Grindr and Match Group Inc., a Texas-based company that owns platforms including Tinder, Hinge, OKCupid and Plenty of Fish, have agreed to the code that took effect on Tuesday, Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said.

    The platforms, which account for 75% of the industry in Australia, have until April 1 to implement the changes before they are strictly enforced, Rowland said.

    The code requires the platforms’ systems to detect potential incidents of online-enabled harm and demands that the accounts of some offenders are terminated.

    Complaint and reporting mechanisms are to be made prominent and transparent. A new rating system will show users how well platforms are meeting their obligations under the code.

    The government called for a code of conduct last year after the Australian Institute of Criminology research found that three-in-four users of dating apps or websites had experienced some form of sexual violence through these platforms in the five years through 2021.

    “There needs to be a complaint-handling process. This is a pretty basic feature that Australians would have expected in the first place,” Rowland told Australian Broadcasting Corp. on Tuesday.

    “If there are grounds to ban a particular individual from utilizing one of those platforms, if they’re banned on one platform, they’re blocked on all platforms,” she added.

    Bumble said it shared the government’s hope of eliminating gender-based violence and was grateful for the opportunity to work with the government and industry on what the platform described as a “world-first dating code of practice.”

    “We know that domestic and sexual violence is an enormous problem in Australia, and that women, members of LGBTQ+ communities, and First Nations are the most at risk,” a Bumble statement said.

    “Bumble puts women’s experiences at the center of our mission to create a world where all relationships are healthy and equitable, and safety has been central to our mission from day one,” Bumble added.

    The other platforms that signed up to the code did not immediately respond to request for comment on Tuesday. All helped design the code.

    Platforms that have not signed up include Happn, Coffee Meets Bagel and Feeld.

    The government expects the code will enable Australians to make better informed choices about which dating apps are best equipped to provide a safe dating experience.

    The government has also warned the online dating industry that it will legislate if the operators fail to keep Australians safe on their platforms.

    Renovations Bring New Gameboard, Safer Perimeter Glass to Hockey Center | News

    Renovations on Harvard’s Bright-Landry Hockey Center ended in August, bringing major technological upgrades to the men’s and women’s ice hockey team’s nearly 50-year-old home.

    The arena, which had its last major renovation in 2014, now features a new state of the art video board along with new ribbon boards, a new lighting system throughout the building, and new glass around the rink.

    Initial discussions for renovations began “roughly two or three years ago,” according to Timothy P. Troville, a senior associate director of Harvard Athletics. Ice was removed from the rink in April, and construction on the facility began in May.

    The ice was reinstalled in June for a number of alumni events and hockey camps.

    The most prominent upgrade to Bright-Landry was the installation of a new video board, consisting of four LED screens, each measuring 11.5 by 16.5 feet. The new board is entirely digital as opposed to the old board which had fixed digit components.

    “It was becoming increasingly difficult to get parts in service based on the age of the board. So that was a couple of years ago where we started to plan, to say, ‘We need to start thinking about replacing the board,’” Troville said.

    The renovations also brought new acrylic glass around the rink, replacing the old tempered glass, which Troville said was “important, one, from a player safety standpoint.”

    “It’ll be far softer, and it’ll dissipate energy in a way that should help our players with shoulders and upper body and head-type of collisions with the shielding,” Troville said, adding that with its lighter weight, the glass can also be reconfigured for other events at the Bright-Landry.

    The renovations also included major digital and lighting upgrades, with new ribbon boards at the ends of the rink and updated lighting.

    “They can put colors out. They can do a light show. If there’s a goal scored, which, again, will create a huge excitement for the fan experience — for the kids — it’s going to feel like they’re, so to speak, in an NHL arena,” Gregory S. Shields, the Athletic Facilities Operations Manager, said.

    Troville and Shields said that they hope the renovations will improve the fan experience for Harvard’s hockey teams.

    “We’re hoping that they have such a good time watching our students, and then they enjoy being in the facility that they’ll want to come back again,” said Troville. “We feel like the facility is in an excellent spot to take us into the next 10 years of Harvard hockey.”

    Shields said that renovated facilities are “vital for not only the competition in the student experience, but the fan experience, the recruiting that can help bring in really talented athletes.”

    “I think we really hit it on the head with this one, updating these systems,” he added.
