    KASSON — A battle of two of the state’s top teams played out exactly as the latest Class 1A girls hockey state rankings would indicate: A one-goal game went down to the wire.

    Freshman Daisy Harens started the scoring with a first-period goal that put top-ranked Dodge County up for good. She then set up teammate Hannah Peterson for what held up as the game-winning goal in the second period.

    Veteran goalie Ida Huber took it from there, the senior Long Island University commit making 20 saves to help the Wildcats hold off No. 3-ranked Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian 2-1 at the Dodge County Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon.

    It was a matchup of teams that could potentially meet in late February at the Xcel Energy Center, both goalies stood out.

    Savannah Blahowiak made 26 saves for Mound Westonka, while Huber stopped six shots in the first period, then seven in each of the final two periods.

    No. 1 Dodge County (7-0-1 overall) remains one of two unbeaten teams in Class 1A, along with Marshall (10-0-0).

    Mound Westonka drops to 4-3-0 overall. Its losses have come against the top two teams in Class 1A — Dodge County and No. 2 Holy Angels — and against Section 1, Class 2A power Northfield.

    Dodge County returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday at No. 9-ranked Blake. The Wildcats then go to Class 2A rival Owatonna on Saturday, Dec. 14, before hosting No. 5-ranked Orono on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

    All football matches scheduled to take place in Wales on Saturday 7 have been postponed due to Storm Darragh, which is expected to bring destructive winds and heavy rain, the Football Association of Wales has announced. 

    In a statement, the body confirmed that it had taken the extraordinary measure after advice from the Met Office, which has issued rare red weather warnings in the country. 

    Storm Darragh is sweeping in across the Atlantic, bringing with it 90mph winds and torrential downpours set to spark flooding and travel chaos in parts of Britain.

    ‘The Met Office has issued red, amber, and yellow weather warnings for the vast majority of Wales due to Storm Darragh, which is expected to bring damaging winds and heavy rain, causing significant disruption and danger to life,’ the statement from the FAW began.

    ‘It is not safe to drive in such weather, including travelling to and from football matches. Being outside in high winds increases the risk of injury and The Met Office advises people to stay indoors if possible.

    ‘Clubs have been advised to check for and secure any loose items around their grounds if it can be done safely. This includes bins, furniture, goalposts, and fences etc.

    The Met Office has issued an 18-hour amber wind warning along the UK's west coast from South Ayrshire down to Cornwall (pictured) , as well as in Northern Ireland, will run on Saturday from 3am to 9pm.

    Meteorologists said a period of ‘extremely strong winds’ will develop during the early hours of Saturday morning as the low pressure system moves across the Irish Sea. 

    The ‘significant disruption’ warning from 3am until 11am covers most of the coast of Wales including Cardiff and Swansea, as well as parts of Bristol and North Somerset. 

    That could mean that various Football League and non-league fixtures could also be affected, though at this point there has been announcement from the FA. 

    Championship side Bristol City welcome QPR to Ashton Gate in the early fixture on Saturday, while in the National League Yeovil Town are set to entertain Braintree Town at 3pm. 

    Forecasters told residents to ‘stay indoors if you can’ and ‘avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous conditions – it is not safe to drive in these conditions’.

    Homeowners were urged to secure loose items outside their properties such as Christmas decorations, bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences.

    The red alert, issued just after 10am on Friday, also urged people to ‘consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items’.

    Red warnings are a rare event, with the last one issued by the Met Office just under a year ago on January 21, 2024 for 99mph Storm Isha – and Friday is only the 19th time in records dating back to 2011 that a red warning has been imposed.

    The Met Office has also issued a 39-hour yellow wind warning for the whole of England, Wales and Northern Ireland and much of Scotland, from 3pm today until 6am on Sunday.

    And an 18-hour amber wind warning along the UK’s west coast from South Ayrshire down to Cornwall, as well as in Northern Ireland, will run on Saturday from 3am to 9pm.

    NORTHFIELD — Isabella Scranton made 42 saves, but Rochester Century/John Marshall fell to Big Nine Conference and Section 1, Class 2A power Northfield 8-0 at Northfield Ice Arena on Saturday.

    Reese Peroutka scored 1:14 into the game, a goal that held up as the game winner.

    Macy Mueller recorded a nine-save shutout for the Raiders (3-0-0 Big Nine, 4-1-0 overall), her second of the season. Mueller, a senior, has allowed seven total goals in five games this winter.

    Peroutka added another goal in the second period for a two-goal game. Junior standout Mia Miller also scored twice and had three assists.

    Century/JM is now 1-3-0 in the Big Nine, 2-4-0 overall. The Panthers return to action at Visitation at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

    MINNETONKA — Approximately 15 hours after beating section rival Simley, the Dodge County girls hockey team went on the road and battled the No. 1-ranked team in the state in Class 2A to a 2-2 tie on its home ice.

    Ida Huber made 35 saves for the Wildcats (5-0-1 overall), who are the No. 2-ranked team in the state in Class 1A. Huber is now 5-0-1 this season with a miniscule 0.80 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage.

    Delaney Miller gave Minnetonka a 1-0 lead six minutes into the second period.

    Dodge County answered at the start of the third, though, scoring twice in the first 2 minutes, 22 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. Bryn Spreiter scored 1:11 into the period, then Maysie Koch scored 1:11 later, her third goal and eighth point of the season. Koch has recorded at least one point in all six of Dodge County’s games so far this season.

    Ashlyn Hazlett made 24 saves for the Skippers (3-1-1 overall).

    Dodge County plays at South St. Paul at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

    Field Hockey to Battle Susquehanna in Landmark Championship on Saturday

    The No. 3 seeded University of Scranton field hockey team has earned the right to play in Saturday’s Landmark Conference Championship game after their 4-0 semifinal victory at No. 2 seeded Catholic University on Wednesday night. The Royals will go on the road to face top seeded Susquehanna Univeristy on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM. 

    Championship Game Info

    • The championship game will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2:00 PM at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove, PA. 

    • Tickets: $10 for adults (18+), $5 for minors (10-17), free for children 9 and under, and Landmark students and faculty with ID. Cash will not be accepted at the venue. Click here to purchase tickets.

    Scranton

    • Record: 18-3 (7-2, LC)

    • Last championship: 2021

    • The Royals defeated Drew University 5-2 in the first round and earned a 4-0 win against Catholic in the semifinals. 

    • Scranton leads the Landmark in both goals per game (3.38) and goals against average (.90), a feat they have achieved in back-to-back seasons. 

    • Head coach Colleen Moyer is in her 20th season at the helm of Scranton. She has led her Royals to their seventh Landmark Conference Championship appearance, and is looking for her third career championship victory.

    Royals to Watch

    • Graduate student Katie Redding currently leads the Landmark Conference in goals (16) and points (42), and is tied for second in assists (10). Redding has tallied three goals and one assist in the two playoff games this season.

    • Bridget Abraldes is second in the nation and leads the Landmark with her 15 assists in her graduate student season. She has also recorded 10 goals and is second in the conference with 35 points. Abraldes has tallied one goal in the two playoff games this season.

    Susquehanna

    • Record: 14-5 (9-0, LC)

    • Last championship: 2023

    • Susquehanna advanced to the championship after defeating No. 4 seed Moravian on Wednesday night, 2-0. 

    • The reigning champion River Hawks earned the No. 1 seed for the second season in a row in 2024. They are second in goals per game (2.63) and in goals against average (1.05), trailing Scranton in both categories.

    • Head coach Allison Fordyce is in her seventh season at the helm of Susquehanna. Her River Hawks team is looking for their third Landmark Conference title under her leadership and their second in as many seasons.

    River Hawks to Watch

    • Senior Kari Schmidt is the reigning Landmark Defensive Player of the Year and leads Susquehanna with 25 points on the season on nine goals and seven assists. She ranks in the top 10 in the Landmark in goals, assists, points and game-winning goals.

    • Sophia Prata is tied for the team lead with nine goals in 2024. The senior has recorded 20 points on those nine goals with two assists.

    Championship Rivalry

    • The championship history between these two teams dates back to 2018 when the No. 3 seeded Susquehanna won their first Landmark title in program history after beating the No. 4 seeded Scranton 2-0 in Selinsgrove, PA.

    • In 2019, the No. 1 seeded Royals returned the favor, defeating the No. 3 seeded River hawks 4-1 in Scranton.

    • In 2023, the River Hawks bested the Royals in a thrilling contest that saw Susquehanna win its second ever Landmark Title in a shootout victory in Selinsgrove, PA. 

    Inside the Series

    • Scranton leads the all-time series 26-20-2. The Royals are 9-8 against the River Hawks since 2010

    • Susquehanna has won three straight games against Scranton, a streak that began last season.

    • Earlier this season, the River Hawks defeated the Royals 2-1. Kari Schmidt scored two goals in the first quarter for Susquehanna as they held a 2-0 advantage through three quarters. Scranton’s lone goal came in the fourth quarter from junior Annie Shaw.  

    • The Royals last win against Susquehanna came in the regular season of 2022, a 2-0 win for Scranton.
