    Big South-OVC Football Association Scores and Standings: Week 8

    CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – The Big South-OVC Football Standings are starting to take shape, and a few teams are still within striking distance of the top.

    Here’s how each team fared in Week 8, and what’s next:

    • 1. No. 8 SEMO (4-0, 7-1 overall)
      • Week 8 result: 26-13 away win over Charleston Southern

    A slow start for the Redhawks eventually turned into a standard SEMO win, one in which D.C. Pippen‘s four field goals made a sizeable difference. Without the team‘s two main runningbacks, Paxton DeLaurent threw for 335 yards and a score to keep the game out of reach. SEMO hosts Gardner-Webb next week for the Redhawks’ Homecoming Game.

    Note: No. 8 SEMO looks set to move up in the FCS Polls, on Monday, October 21. With No. 5 Villanova and No. 7 Mercer both losing to unranked opponents, the Redhawks could jump up to No. 6 nationally, which would be a program record.

    • 2. Tennessee State (3-1, 6-2 overall)
      • Week 8 result: 27-14 away win over Howard

    Tennessee State kept things rolling outside the conference, defeating Howard by two touchdowns. Draylen Ellis threw for 289 yards while Spiffy Evans had three kick returns for 150 yards and one touchdown. The Tigers return to Big South-OVC play in two weeks; they’re on their bye next week.

    • 3. No. 25 UT Martin (2-1, 4-3 overall)
      • UT Martin did not play Week 8

    T-No. 25 UT Martin comes off its bye with just one conference loss on the year. The Skyhawks host Eastern Illinois, on Saturday, October 26.

    • 4. Western Illinois (2-1, 3-4 overall)
      • Week 8 result: 37-21 home win over Tennessee Tech

    Western Illinois paid no mind to Tennessee Tech’s defense Saturday. The Leathernecks offense roared for 446 yards in total, with the attacking being evenly spread out in the air and on the ground. Western Illinois heads to Missouri to face Lindenwood next week.

    • 5. Lindenwood (2-2, 3-5 overall)
      • Week 8 result: 42-35 road loss to Gardner-Webb

    Lindenwood couldn’t hang with Gardner-Webb over the weekend. Still, Jeff Caldwell had a strong performance, with 174 yards receiving and a touchdown. Lindenwood hosts Western Illinois next week.

    • 6. Tennessee Tech (2-2, 2-5 overall)
      • Week 8 result: 21-37 road loss to Western Illinois

    After a 2-0 start, the Golden Eagles are 2-2 in conference play. Dylan Laible threw for 262 yards with Jalen Mitchell rushing for 86. Tennessee Tech hosts Charleston Southern next week in Cookeville.

    • 7. Gardner-Webb (1-2, 2-5 overall)
      • Week 8 result: 42-35 home win over Lindenwood

    Finally, the Bulldogs had a game that showed sparks of their 2023 unit that reached the FCS Playoffs. Gardner-Webb had two rushers for over 100 yards, and the Bulldogs have reached a new high ahead of their biggest game of the year. Gardner-Webb faces SEMO on the Redhawks’ Homecoming next week.

    • 8. Eastern Illinois (0-3, 1-6 overall)
      • Eastern Illinois did not play Week 8

    Eastern Illinois had its bye this week. The Panthers will take a refreshed squad to ranked UT Martin, on Saturday, October 26.

    • 9. Charleston Southern (0-4, 1-6 overall)
      • Week 8 result: 17-41 road loss to Tennessee State

    Charleston Southern put up a good fight against No. 8 SEMO, but the Redhawks kept the Buccanneers out of reach for much of the game. Kaleb Jackson threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Next week, Charleston Southern heads to Tennessee Tech.

    North Central 2, Pullman 1 (SO): Audrey Bartlett scored unassisted early in regulation and the visiting Wolfpack (6-6, 4-4) defeated the Greyhounds (8-3, 6-2) 4-1 in a shootout. Sidney Johnson tied the game in the 55th minute for the Greyhounds.

    Indiana men’s soccer scores season-high 3 goals in win over No. 8 Wisconsin

    After Indiana men’s soccer drew No. 4 Ohio State 2-2 on Sept. 27 in Columbus, Ohio, head coach Todd Yeagley said the squad was capable of more goal scoring. 

    For the first month of the season, scoring just seven goals in seven matches, there were valid concerns regarding the attack’s execution in front of the net. But Tuesday night in Madison, Wisconsin, the Hoosiers edged the No. 8 Badgers 3-2, marking Indiana’s highest goal tally of the year. 

    The result comes at an especially critical time for an Indiana team starving for momentum. Seemingly each sign of progress has been followed by a disappointing performance. There were certainly flashes when senior forward Tommy Mihalic’s brace spearheaded a 2-0 win over Yale University on Sept. 1, but a sloppy 1-1 draw with Butler University ensued three days later. 

    But Tuesday night, the Hoosiers didn’t regress following an optimistic outing against the Buckeyes. In the 12th minute, senior forward Sam Sarver wove a pass across the Badgers’ 18-yard box to sophomore forward Collins Oduro. 

    Without hesitation, Oduro curled a shot from the top of the box — with the help of a slight deflection from a Wisconsin defender — into the left corner. The goal marked Oduro’s first of the season, perhaps surprising given his impressive freshman campaign. Last year, Oduro netted five goals en route to Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors.  

    It didn’t take long for the Badgers to respond. Roughly 10 minutes later, after offering a few threatening chances toward Indiana fifth-year senior goalkeeper JT Harms, Wisconsin equalized. 

    After a cross lofted into the Hoosiers’ box, it took four separate headers before tumbling to the grass. Wisconsin junior forward Thomas Raimbault pounced on the rebound and fired a half-volley past Harms into the bottom corner. 

    Generally this season, Indiana’s half-to-half consistency has been a glaring issue. It was present when the Hoosiers collapsed in the second half against Butler, but it was far from a struggle against the Badgers. 

    Just four minutes into the second half, Mihalic received a pass from Oduro at the top of the box and immediately swung his hips toward the goal. With Wisconsin freshman goalkeeper Matisse Hébert slightly off his line, Mihalic launched a shot just over Hébert’s grasp to put Indiana up 2-1. 

    As Yeagley noted after the Hoosiers’ draw with the Buckeyes, Mihalic is pressing less than he was last season, when he tallied a meager two goals despite leading the Big Ten in shots and shots on target. 

    Now, Mihalic leads Indiana and ranks second in the conference with six goals, just one shy of his career-high seven in 2022. It seemed probable that the Hoosiers — which record just under 13 shots per game and boast a talented and experienced attacking unit — would eventually start finding the back of the net consistently.

    McDonald has started all but one match over the last three seasons.

    Wisconsin equalized yet again in the 62nd minute after Harms mishandled a cross and Badger sophomore defender Ellis Jones poked the loose ball in. Level at 2-2, it only took Hoosiers a little over two minutes to find the deciding goal. 

    After dispossessing a Wisconsin midfielder, Oduro burst onto the attack and quickly maneuvered into space at the top of the box. He cut to his right and blasted a shot past Hébert before charging toward Indiana’s sideline and sliding into a swarming celebration from his teammates. 

    Indiana warded off a late surge from the Badgers and earned its second conference road win of the season, along with its first victory over a ranked foe. Yeagley’s teams tend to surge in October, and the Hoosiers notched their finest win of the season right after the calendar turned. 

    Now 2-1-1 in the Big Ten, Indiana jumped to fourth in the table with six conference matches remaining. The Hoosiers next return home for three consecutive games at Bill Armstrong Stadium, starting with a bout against Washington at 7 p.m. Friday.

    After going into the break down 1-0, the Warrior Run boys soccer team rallied in the second half, putting up two goals in the period to defeat Montoursville, 2-1, on Wednesday at Montoursville. Ori Kennel tied the game at 1-1 with an unassisted score 13 minutes into the half before Carter McCormick gave the Defenders the lead just two minutes later.

    For Montoursville, Mason Fry finished with five saves inside the net and Quinn Winslow scored the team’s lone goal midway through the first off an assist from Gavin Hawley. They’ll look to bounce back against Northeast Bradford on Saturday.

    Alex Citrino recorded a hat trick and Kayden Rogers had two goals in a 6-2 win for Wellsboro against North Penn-Liberty. The Mounties’ two goals came from Tate Strange and Brady Stetter.

    “The boys moved the ball well and created goal scoring opportunities,” Wellsboro coach Todd Fitch said. “We’re giving up too many goals on miscues and need to clean that up as we move forward. It was a good win for us.”

    Lewisburg blanked Central Mountain, 4-0, to improve to 9-1-1. Isaac Ayres scored twice in the second half to help seal the game. Alex Gilmore and Cohen Hoover both scored in the first half.

    • On Tuesday evening, Williamsport volleyball was able to pull off a sweep, defeating Shamokin 3-0 with set scores of 25-9, 25-8 and 25-7. Jayden Ulmer played a tremendous game, leading the team in points (12), digs (6) and blocks (2) and tying with Kaylee Smith for first on the team in kills with seven. Belle Morrow led the team in assists with 18 and Kaylee Smith also played a big role, posting six points, five digs and a block alongside her seven kills.

    The Lancers saw similar success against Danville on Tuesday, defeating the Ironmen in three sets by set scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-20. Layla Wetzel led the team in digs (16), aces (8) and assists (18) while also posting seven kills. And Alyson Hughes led the team in kills with 14.

    In a girls tennis match that featured five singles matches and two doubles ones, Central Mountain fell on the road to Altoona, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon. Addison Lindsay garnered the lone point for the Wildcats, pulling off a clean 6-0, 6-0 against Altoona’s Bella Graham on singles court one.

    • Two first-half goals helped regionally ranked Penn State-Harrisburg post a 2-0 win over the Lycoming College men’s soccer team on Wednesday night at UPMC Field. The Warriors (5-2-1 overall) were outshot, 12-9, but held a 3-2 lead in corner kicks and were out-fouled, 19-8. In the net, first-year Jace Bennett made five saves for the Warriors.

    On a rain filled Wednesday night, the Lock Haven men’s soccer team allowed just one score, but that was all that was needed, as East Stroudsburg edged out the Bald Eagles at home, 1-0, in a PSAC East vs. West crossover match. In the net, Ethan Beck made his first career start and finished with five saves in the full 90 minutes. The Haven defense continued its streak of strong defensive efforts.

    • Junior Isabella Bobe notched nine saves to lead the Lycoming College field hockey team against Albright College, as it fell by a score of 4-0 at UPMC Field on Wednesday. Senior Halie Woodring led the Warriors with two shots. The Lions’ Kelsey McTaggart made six saves to earn the shutout.

    The No. 10 Mansfield Mountaineer field hockey team (4-3) held strong to double overtime with No. 5 West Chester (6-2) until the Golden Rams snuck in a late game winner in the second overtime period to take the nonconference battle, 1-0. Pressure from West Chester and the man advantage forced two shots, including a rebound for the Golden Rams to find the cage and earn the victory.

    Standout defense and a clean sheet by Megan Miller led the Lock Haven women’s soccer team to a 0-0 tie at East Stroudsburg in a PSAC East match on Wednesday afternoon. With the tie, the Bald Eagles moved to 1-2-3 overall and 1-2-1 (4 points) in the PSAC East. The tie also snaps an eight-game skid for Lock Haven at the hands of East Stroudsburg. Miller made a game-high 11 saves, and the Lock Haven defense withheld a game-high 26 shots and nine corner opportunities to keep the Warriors off the board and clinch the scoreless-tie on the road.

    • The Mansfield women’s soccer team (0-3-3, 0-3-1 PSAC East) traveled to West Virginia on Wednesday afternoon to face off with the No. 25 nationally ranked Shepherd Rams (4-0-2, 4-0-0 PSAC East). The Rams scored the opening goal in the ninth and never looked back, defeating the Mountaineers, 5-0.

    • Mansfield goalkeeper Alyssa Shuman had 11 saves on the day, tying her career high. And Kerrah Clymer and Taylar Luckenbill recorded the only two shots for the Mounties, with Luckenbill’s landing on goal.

    GLIDDEN — Perrin Sulzle moved back to quarterback and did just about everything in the Baxter football team’s come-from-behind win over Glidden-Ralston on Friday.

    Sulzle threw for 133 yards, rushed for 181 and caught one pass during the Bolts’ 20-18 road win in Class 8-Man District 9 action.

    The win spoiled Glidden-Ralston’s Homecoming. The Bolts scored the go-ahead touchdown with 11 seconds left after the Wildcats scored to go up 18-14 with 1:56 to go in the fourth.

    “There was a point in the game where I thought it was over, and I was telling our kids to lose with class,” Baxter head football coach Rob Luther said.

    The Bolts went four and out after Glidden-Ralston took the 18-14 lead late. With two timeouts left, Luther thought they’d have about 10 seconds left if they could get a stop on defense.

    The Wildcats, in an attempt to run out the clock, went backwards 15 yards on their first play from scrimmage.

    On second and 30 and following Baxter’s first of two timeouts, G-R once again attempted to run out the clock. The Bolts (2-2, 1-1 in the district) were flagged for a 15-yard penalty after hitting the quarterback as he was kneeling.

    “That’s when I thought it was over,” Luther said. “I was just trying to settle our kids down because they were upset.

    “I’m not exactly sure what happened, but they either declined the penalty or the officials waived it off because it was not your normal kneeling of the football. He was running around and we were trying to tackle him to preserve time. They also thought we took our last timeout, but we didn’t. They snapped it way too early at that point and that gave us enough time late to do something with the ball.”

    Luther said he took the timeout before fourth down. A shanked punt gave the ball to the Bolts at the G-R 37-yard line with 24 seconds to go.

    Sulzle connected with Eli Dee on the first play and then used his feet to gain extra yardage on the second play. G-R also was flagged for a late hit on Sulzle, which moved the ball 15 yards closer.

    On the next play, Sulzle hit Stadan Vansice for a 7-yard touchdown on a post corner route with 11 seconds to go.

    The Wildcats (2-2, 1-1) threw two balls to the end zone in the final seconds but both were batted down by Baxter.

    “That’s one of the craziest games I’ve ever been a part of,” Luther said. “I still can’t believe we won that game. But we needed it. Our backs were against the wall.”

    Baxter led 8-6 after one quarter but trailed 12-8 after three before outscoring the Wildcats 12-6 in the final frame.

    Sulzle finished 12-of-24 through the air for 133 yards and two touchdowns. His 181 rushing yards came on 27 carries and he caught one pass for 18 yards.

    Dee, who moved from quarterback to wide receiver, threw the 18-yard pass to Sulzle and also grabbed a career-high seven catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns. His touchdown catch with 5:05 to play gave the Bolts a 14-12 lead.

    Jack Anderson added 12 rushing yards on four carries and 25 yards on two catches, Vansice returned from injury to grab two passes for 14 yards and the game-winning score and Cade Robinson caught two passes for 18 yards. Cainan Travis’ lone catch went for 10 yards.

    The defense was led by Aiden Johnson’s career-best 11 tackles and two tackles for loss.

    Travis also had 11 tackles, Anderson registered 10 tackles and Sulzle finished with seven tackles.

    Carter Smith chipped in 6.5 tackles, Trevor Hamilton tallied six tackles and Dee posted four tackles and one interception.

    Dee’s five interceptions in 2024 leads 8-man and ranks tied for second in the state.

    Vansice played offense only and Travis is not 100 percent and playing most of his snaps on defense. Cael Wishman continues to miss time with an injury.

    Colby Wallace led the Wildcats with 171 rushing yards and two touchdowns and seven tackles. Dawson Majerus grabbed four passes for 77 yards and one TD.

    Glidden-Raliston received votes in the Associated Press’ first football poll of the season last week. The Wildcats converted two fourth downs on their final scoring drive that eventually led to an 18-14 lead.

    Girls soccer

    Mt. Spokane 2, University 1: Emery Baker scored the winning goal in the 80th minute as the visiting Wildcats (2-0) beat the Titans (2-1).

    West Valley 2, Gonzaga Prep 1: Jenna Howe and Lauren Matthew scored one goal apiece, and the visiting Eagles (2-0-1) defeated the Bullpups.

    Julia Few scored for the Bullpups.

    East Valley 6, Shadle Park 0: Hayden Anderson scored four goals and the visiting Knights (2-0, 1-0) beat the Highlanders (1-3, 0-1) in a GSL 2A game at ONE Spokane Stadium.

    Katelyn Marshall added two goals for East Valley.

    Freeman 12, Newport 0: Nora Gass scored six goals, and the visiting Scotties (2-0) beat the Grizzlies (0-2).

    Lakeside 3, Deer Park 0: Sienna Breneman had one goal and one assist as the visiting Eagles (1-2) beat the Stags (2-1).

    Shadle Park 16, Mead 6: Madi Keon had three hits, and the visiting Highlanders (2-1, 2-0) beat the Panthers (2-1, 0-1) in a GSL 4A/3A game. Hope Murdock led Mead with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Shadle used a 12-run third inning to gain control after Mead took a 2-0 lead after the first.

    Central Valley 13, Deer Park 0: Ellie Taylor had two hits, including a double and a triple, as the visiting Bears (3-3, 1-0) beat the Stags (1-2, 0-1) in a GSL 3A/2A game.

    Kaelin Knott-Harmer threw a five-inning shutout for CV.

    Mt. Spokane 13, Ridgeline 6: Avery Fox went 3 for 4 with a triple, and the Wildcats (3-0, 2-0) beat the visiting Falcons (2-1, 0-1) in a GSL 3A game. Gianna Haiar led Ridgeline with three hits.

    East Valley 16, Rogers 5: Shelby Swanson had three hits, including two home runs, and three RBIs as the Knights (1-2, 1-0) beat the visiting Pirates (1-2, 0-1) in a GSL 2A game.

    Haley Bernard led Rogers with two hits, including a triple.

    Clarkston 3, North Central 0: Ella Leavitt had seven kills, and the Bantams (1-1, 1-0) defeated the visiting Wolfpack (0-2, 0-1) 25-15, 25-8, 25-18. Mandy Schwahn had three kills for the Wolfpack.

    Central Valley 3, University 0: Kailee Ekelsen had 12 kills, and the Bears (1-1) beat the visiting Titans (2-2) 25-16, 25-14, 28-26.

    Deer Park 3, Colville 0: Cameron Chapman had 10 kills, and the visiting Stags (2-0) beat the Crimson Hawks (0-2) 25-21, 25-12, 25-7.

    Pullman 3, Colfax 2: Camber Wolfe had 36 assists, and the visiting Greyhounds (1-1) defeated the Bulldogs (1-1) 24-26, 19-25, 25-18, 25-14, 15-6.

  • Portage County high school scores from Sept. 10, 2024

    Field's Cedric Martin, pictured last year against Roosevelt, delivered a key goal against Cloverleaf Tuesday.

    Field boys soccer handed Cloverleaf its first loss Tuesday evening.

    The Falcons (8-1) topped last year’s Metro Athletic Conference champions behind a goal apiece from Cedric Martin and Brayden Ronowski and an assist apiece from Ethan Flores-Soler and Wyatt Rahe. Caleb Brastine made six saves to help Field pick up the victory, including stopping a penalty kick.

    Streetsboro 6, Ravenna 1

    Payton Krzeminski delivered a remarkable performance with a hat trick and three assists. Nick Castrilla added two goals and an assist while Ethan Laryea had a goal and two assists.

    Aurora 1, Cuyahoga Falls 0

    Chris Savukas broke a scoreless tie in the second half for the Greenmen off an assist from Cam Gentille.
