Google reveals 2024 top trending search terms for food, sports, movies and people

What were you searching for in 2024?

According to Google’s Year in Search report, the world was surfing the web for news about the US election, the latest iPhone release, blockbuster movie releases, TikTok trends and style advice.

The results, Google told TechCrunch, aren’t just the most popular searches — that would be, for instance, the weather — but rather a list of people, places and things that became more popular this year or “had a high spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2024 as compared to 2023.”

Globally, coverage of sporting events took first place in searches, with Copa América taking the top spot, followed by the UEFA European Championship and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Liam Payne, the singer and former One Direction member who died this year was fifth on the list, trailed by President-elect Donald Trump and information about the new iPhone 16, which was released this fall. the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and information about Catherine, Princess of Wales, were also among the top searches around the world.

In the US, news about the election, the New York Times’ game Connections and the Yankees fell among the most-searched terms of the year across the board.

Sean Combs, known as Diddy, was the top-searched musician globally. Ethan Miller
Americans’ most-searched “aesthetic” was “Mob Wife.” Tamara Beckwith/NY POST

When divided into sub-categories, Americans searched for Trump more than Harris, JD Vance and President Joe Biden, and in searches for celebrity deaths, users looked up news about the passing of Toby Keith, who died this year after battling cancer, more than any other.

Diddy, the rapper who faces racketeering and sex trafficking charges, was the No. 1 most-searched musician globally but fell in second place behind Usher in the US.

Around the globe, the top-searched TV series was the Netflix hit “Baby Reindeer,” while “Inside Out 2,” released this summer, was the most-searched flick both globally and in the US. Domestically, it was followed by “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “It Ends with Us” and “Saltburn.”

It was also the year of the martini, as the Porn Star Martini — followed by the buzzy US Open Honey Deuce and the viral Hugo spritz — took first place for the most-searched cocktail in the country, while dirty martinis placed fifth, lychee martinis took sixth lemon drop martinis fell at ninth.

Meanwhile, on-trend Americans searched for the viral “mob wife aesthetic” — marked by micro skirts, large fur coats and voluminous hair ‘dos — more than any other. “Brat” landed at fourth place on the style “aesthetic” list, while “office siren” placed seventh.

Fashion-forward users also searched for the “back in style” fads that saw a resurgence in 2024, “are skinny jeans back in style?” being the most-searched query after the snug-fitting denim was revived by Gen Zers this year.

RICHARD EDEN: Meghan Markle finds the ideal boss for her American Riviera Orchard… herself! Duchess of Sussex takes up CEO role at her lifestyle brand after fruitless search to find someone able to meet her expectations

Having announced her new cooking and lifestyle business, American Riviera Orchard, with great fanfare back in March, the Duchess of Sussex began a search for a suitable Chief Executive Officer.

‘Meghan is interviewing candidates for the CEO role at the moment,’ a source told me at the time.

Despite having interviewed several candidates for the position, Prince Harry’s wife was unable to find anyone who matched her expectations.

Now, insiders say she has found the perfect candidate – herself.

‘She is the CEO of American Riviera Orchard,’ a ‘source in the know’ told the New York Post.

In April, a California-based source told me: ‘The initial CEO search has not panned out so far.’

I reported that the Duchess’s difficulties had led to an intriguing new development: she had begun negotiations with Netflix about the U.S. streaming giant entering into a commercial partnership with American Riviera Orchard.

‘This is something new for Netflix,’ the source told me. ‘It would run the lifestyle business with Meghan, developing products as spin-offs from her show. ‘If a partnership is agreed, it’s likely that Netflix would install its own CEO to run operations.’

Her lawyer has applied to trademark the brand in the U.S. for various goods, including cutlery, recipe books, tablecloths, napkins, jams, edible oils, vegetable and dairy-based spreads. The trademark application also appears to extend to a physical shop where items could be sold.

The Duchess, 43, unveiled the venture nine months ago by posting a glitzy video on Instagram in which she could be seen busying herself in a rustic-looking kitchen, arranging white and pink flowers and whisking something in a bowl.

She posted the video the day after I contacted her office for comment on her plans, which may have overshadowed an appearance by Harry, via video link, at an event that evening for the Diana Award, an organisation close to his heart.

The news that Meghan has appointed herself chief executive of the business follows a string of departures from Harry and Meghan’s workforce.

The total number of staff the Sussexes have lost since they married in 2018 is said to be at least 18, with nine or more having left since they moved to California.

A spokesman for the Sussexes declined to comment last night.

  • FAU football coaching search 2024: Candidates, hot board, names to watch from Owls experts

FAU football coaching search 2024: Candidates, hot board, names to watch from Owls experts

The Florida Atlantic Owls made a splash in 2023 when they brought in former Texas head coach Tom Herman to lead the program. It was a short-lived tenure, as they fired Herman on Monday after he went 6-16 (3-9 AAC) in less than two full seasons with the program. FAU has a history of hiring big names in need of a career revival like Herman, Lane Kiffin, Willie Taggart and Howard Schnellenberger. Will the Owls go that route again, or target more of an up-and-comer with the next FAU football coach?

Chad Lunsford will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of this season, as the 2-8 Owls look to finish strong against Charlotte and Tulsa, while athletic director Brian White will begin the national search for a new FAU head football coach in the meantime. If you love the Owls, or just want to know who will call the shots for FAU football in the future, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at Owls247, the 247Sports affiliate that covers Florida Atlantic.

The Owls247′ FAU insiders are providing on-the-ground updates on every development surrounding Herman’s firing and the future of the FAU football program, including insights from Luke Chaney and Cameron Priester, who have deep-rooted ties inside and around the FAU community. Get all the inside scoop on the football program, plus VIP intel on FAU football, basketball, recruiting and more.

And right now, Owls247 is offering 50% off annual subscriptions*, so now is the time to sign up. The team at Owls247 already has a list out of several potential candidates and there are some surprising names on the list. Head to Owls247 now to see them all.

Top Florida Atlantic football coach candidates

One name the staff has identified as a potential target is Ole Miss offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. The son of former Notre Dame and Kansas head coach Charlie Weis, Charlie Weis Jr. grew up in the profession and become one of the youngest coordinators in college football history when he directed Kiffin’s offense for FAU as a 24-year-old in 2018.

After going to South Florida for two seasons, Weis Jr. then rejoined Kiffin at Ole Miss and is now directing one of the nation’s most explosive offenses. He’d be the youngest FBS head coach in the nation by a fairly wide margin, but his overall level of experience and connections to the area could pay dividends for the Owls.

“Weis has never held a head coach position before, and at 31-years-old, he is a bit young, but he is one of college football’s top emerging offensive minds,” Chaney said. See more candidates at Owls247.

How to get insider FAU coaching staff search updates

The rest of the list includes several other coaches with ties to the area, including a former AP College Football Coach of the Year and an NFL Hall-of-Famer who is now rising up the college coaching ranks. You can only see who they are at Owls247.

Who are the top candidates in the FAU football coaching search, and which massive names could be in the mix? Go to Owls247 to see their FAU coaching hot board and more, all from a team of FAU insiders, and find out.

In Search Of Soup Dumplings, Thousands On Cycles Clog Roads In Chinese City

Police in central China imposed traffic curbs at the weekend to halt a viral craze in which thousands of university students borrowed share bikes to ride overnight to the city of Kaifeng in search of breakfast. The “Night Riding Army”, as some participants described it, clogged a highway on Friday, pictures posted on social media showed, a surge in turnout for a rolling flash mob that had been gathering riders for months. “Last night’s ‘Night Riding Army’ was spectacular!” one rider posted. “Two lanes were opened, but that simply was not enough: The cycling army accounted for four!”

The event was part of a trend of young Chinese travelling on the cheap – “like special forces” – and spending as little as possible at a time of scarce job prospects, when wages are under pressure. The riders travelled on a straight road more than 60 km (37 miles) long beside the Yellow River that links Zhengzhou, the largest city in Henan province, with Kaifeng, an ancient capital famed for its soup dumplings.

The trend was set off in June, Chinese media said, after four women college students chronicled their ride on social media to eat dumplings in the morning. “The Night Ride to Kaifeng: Youth is priceless, enjoy it in time,” was the hashtag on social media for the ride, which state broadcaster CMG said tens of thousands of students had completed by the weekend. Key to its success was a glut of shared bikes, which can be rented for as little as $1.95 a month. Pictures posted by riders showed thousands of the bikes had overrun downtown Kaifeng by Saturday.

In addition to the traffic controls, the largest bike-sharing platforms, Hellobike, DiDi Bike, and Mobile, said their vehicles would lock down if ridden out of a designated zone, while media told the students to grow up. “Youthful freedom does not mean following the trend and indulging oneself,” one news outlet admonished in a comment. “Kaifeng is worth arriving slowly and savouring carefully,” read the headline of another.

Chinese authorities have cracked down on other spontaneous gatherings. Last month, police turned out in force in the commercial hub of Shanghai to deter a repeat of 2023 Halloween celebrations in which some revellers wore costumes poking fun at issues such as the stock market, youth unemployment and tough COVID-19 curbs.

  • NASA spacecraft rockets toward Jupiter’s moon Europa in search of the right conditions for life

NASA spacecraft rockets toward Jupiter’s moon Europa in search of the right conditions for life

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A NASA spacecraft rocketed away Monday on a quest to explore Jupiter’s tantalizing moon Europa and reveal whether its vast hidden ocean might hold the keys to life.

It will take Europa Clipper 5 1/2 years to reach Jupiter, where it will slip into orbit around the giant gas planet and sneak close to Europa during dozens of radiation-drenched flybys.

Scientists are almost certain a deep, global ocean exists beneath Europa’s icy crust. And where there is water, there could be life, making the moon one of the most promising places out there to hunt for it.

Europa Clipper won’t look for life; it has no life detectors. Instead, the spacecraft will zero in on the ingredients necessary to sustain life, searching for organic compounds and other clues as it peers beneath the ice for suitable conditions.

“Ocean worlds like Europa are not only unique because they might be habitable, but they might be habitable today,” NASA’s Gina DiBraccio said on the eve of launch.

SpaceX started Clipper on its 1.8 million-mile (3 billion-kilometer) journey, launching the spacecraft on a Falcon Heavy rocket from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.

The $5.2 billion mission almost got derailed by transistors.

NASA didn’t learn until spring that Clipper’s transistors might be more vulnerable to Jupiter’s intense radiation field than anticipated. Clipper will endure the equivalent of several million chest X-rays during each of the 49 Europa flybys. The space agency spent months reviewing everything before concluding in September that the mission could proceed as planned.

Hurricane Milton added to the anxiety, delaying the launch by several days.

About the size of a basketball court with its solar wings unfurled, Clipper will swing past Mars and then Earth on its way to Jupiter for gravity assists. The nearly 13,000-pound (5,700-kilogram) probe should reach the solar system’s biggest planet in 2030.

Clipper will circle Jupiter every 21 days. One of those days will bring it close to Europa, among 95 known moons at Jupiter and close to our own moon in size.

The spacecraft will skim as low as 16 miles (25 kilometers) above Europa — much closer than the few previous visitors. Onboard radar will attempt to penetrate the moon’s ice sheet, believed to be 10 miles to 15 miles or more (15 kilometers to 24 kilometers) thick. The ocean below could be 80 miles (120 kilometers) or more deep.

The spacecraft holds nine instruments, with its sensitive electronics stored in a vault with dense zinc and aluminum walls for protection against radiation. Exploration will last until 2034.

If conditions are found to be favorable for life at Europa, then that opens up the possibility of life at other ocean worlds in our solar system and beyond, according to scientists. With an underground ocean and geysers, Saturn’s moon Enceladus is another top candidate.

  • Google’s search engine’s latest AI injection will answer voiced questions about video and photos

Google’s search engine’s latest AI injection will answer voiced questions about video and photos

SAN FRANCISCO — Google is injecting its search engine with more artificial intelligence that will enable people to voice questions about images and occasionally organize an entire page of results, despite the technology’s past misadventures with misleading information.

The latest changes announced Thursday herald the next step in an AI-driven makeover that Google launched in mid-May when it began responding to some queries with summaries written by the technology at the top of its influential results page. Those summaries, dubbed “AI Overviews,” raised fears among publishers that fewer people would click on search links to their websites and undercut the traffic needed to sell digital ads that help finance their operations.

Google is addressing some of those ongoing worries by inserting even more links to other websites within the AI Overviews, which already have been reducing the visits to general news publishers such as The New York Times and technology review specialists such as TomsGuide.com, according to an analysis released last month by search traffic specialist BrightEdge.

The same study found the citations within AI Overviews are driving more traffic to highly specialized sites such as Bloomberg.com and the National Institute of Health.

Google’s decision to pump even more AI into the search engine that remains the crown jewel of its $2 trillion empire leaves little doubt that the Mountain View, California, company is tethering its future to a technology propelling the biggest industry shift since Apple unveiled the first iPhone 17 years ago.

The next phase of Google’s AI evolution builds upon its 7-year-old Lens feature that processes queries about objects in a picture. The Lens option is now generates more than 20 billion queries per month, and is particularly popular among users from 18 to 24 years old. That’s a younger demographic that Google is trying to cultivate as it faces competition from AI alternatives powered by ChatGPT and Perplexity that are positioning themselves as answer engines.

Now, people will be able to use Lens to ask a question in English about something they are viewing through a camera lens — as if they were talking about it with a friend — and get search results. Users signed up for tests of the new voice-activated search features in Google Labs will also be able to take video of moving objects, such as fish swimming around aquarium, while posing a conversational question and be presented an answer through an AI Overview.

“The whole goal is can we make search simpler to use for people, more effortless to use and make it more available so people can search any way, anywhere they are,” said Rajan Patel, Google’s vice president of search engineering and a co-founder of the Lens feature.

Although advances in AI offer the potential of making search more convenient, the technology also sometimes spits out bad information — a risk that threatens to damage the credibility of Google’s search engine if the inaccuracies become too frequent. Google has already had some embarrassing episodes with its AI Overviews, including advising people to put glue on pizza and to eat rocks. The company blamed those missteps on data voids and online troublemakers deliberately trying to steer its AI technology in a wrong direction.

Google is now so confident that it has fixed some of its AI’s blind spots that it will rely on the technology to decide what types of information to feature on the results page. Despite its previous bad culinary advice about pizza and rocks, AI will initially be used for the presentation of the results for queries in English about recipes and meal ideas entered on mobile devices. The AI-organized results are supposed to be broken down into different groups of clusters consisting of photos, videos and articles about the subject.

  • Spider lovers scurry to Colorado town in search of mating tarantulas and community

Spider lovers scurry to Colorado town in search of mating tarantulas and community

LA JUNTA, Colo. — Love is in the air on the Colorado plains — the kind that makes your heart beat a bit faster, quickens your step and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

It’s tarantula mating season, when male spiders scurry out of their burrows in search of a mate, and hundreds of arachnophiles flock to the small farming town of La Junta to watch them emerge in droves.

Scientists, spider enthusiasts and curious Colorado families piled into buses just before dusk last weekend as tarantulas began to roam the dry, rolling plains. Some used flashlights and car headlights to spot the arachnids once the sun set.

Back in town, festivalgoers flaunted their tarantula-like traits in a hairy leg contest — a woman claimed the title this year — and paraded around in vintage cars with giant spiders on the hoods. The 1990 cult classic film “Arachnophobia,” which follows a small town similarly overrun with spiders, screened downtown at the historic Fox Theater.

For residents of La Junta, tarantulas aren’t the nightmarish creatures often depicted on the silver screen. They’re an important part of the local ecosystem and a draw for people around the U.S. who might have otherwise never visited the tight-knit town in southeastern Colorado.

Word spread quickly among neighbors about all the people they had met from out of town during the third year of the tarantula festival.

Among them was Nathan Villareal, a tarantula breeder from Santa Monica, California, who said he heard about the mating season and knew it was a spectacle he needed to witness. Villareal sells tarantulas as pets to people around the U.S. and said he has been fascinated with them since childhood.

“Colorado Brown” tarantulas are the most common in the La Junta area, and they form their burrows in the largely undisturbed prairies of the Comanche National Grassland.

In September and October, the mature males wander in search of a female’s burrow, which she typically marks with silk webbing. Peak viewing time is an hour before dusk when the heat of the day dies down.

“We saw at least a dozen tarantulas on the road, and then we went back afterwards and saw another dozen more,” Villareal said.

Male tarantulas take around seven years to reach reproductive readiness, then spend the rest of their lifespan searching for a mate, said Cara Shillington, a biology professor at Eastern Michigan University who studies arachnids. They typically live for about a year after reaching sexual maturity, while females can live for 20 years or more.

The males grow to be about 5 inches long and develop a pair of appendages on their heads that they use to drum outside a female’s burrow. She will crawl to the surface if she is a willing mate, and the male will hook its legs onto her fangs.

Their coupling is quick, as the male tries to get away before he is eaten by the female, who tends to be slightly larger and needs extra nutrients to sustain her pregnancy.

Like many who attended the festival, Shillington is passionate about teaching people not to fear tarantulas and other spiders. Tarantulas found in North America tend to be docile creatures, she explained. Their venom is not considered dangerous to humans but can cause pain and irritation.

“When you encounter them, they’re more afraid of you,” Shillington said. “Tarantulas only bite out of fear. This is the only way that they have to protect themselves, and if you don’t put them in a situation where they feel like they have to bite, then there is no reason to fear them.”

Many children who attended the festival with their families learned that spiders are not as scary as they might seem. Roslyn Gonzales, 13, said she couldn’t wait to go searching for spiders come sunset.

For graduate student Goran Shikak, whose arm was crawling with spider tattoos, the yearly festival represents an opportunity to celebrate tarantulas with others who share his fascination.

“They’re beautiful creatures,” said Shikak, an arachnology student at the University of Colorado Denver. “And getting to watch them do what they do … is a joy and experience that’s worth watching in the wild.”

  • Search for new Westmeath football manager goes on

Search for new Westmeath football manager goes on

Westmeath GAA chairman Frank Mescall (right) with county secretary Brendan Shaw, both of whom are on the committee which is seeking a new senior football manager.

Westmeath GAA chairman Frank Mescall has said that the search for a new Westmeath senior football manager is an ongoing process.

The Lake County are without a manager since Dessie Dolan stepped aside after this year’s championship and they remain in limbo, with several candidates turning down the position over the past two months.

“We appreciate that it’s very frustrating and upsetting for supporters, but we are determined to get the best candidate to manage our senior footballers, who have made great strides in recent years. They deserve a top class manager and we want the very best for them,” said Mescall earlier this week..

Speculation was rife regarding the potential appointment of Lar Wall, who managed The Downs two years ago when they reached a Leinster club final, but the chairman offered no comment with regards to names.

Wall was an interested spectator as The Downs overcame Coralstown/Kinnegad in Saturday’s semi-final at TEG Cusack Park. He worked with the Roscommon backroom team this year under manager Davy Burke, and was a candidate for the vacant Meath manager’s position which eventually went to Robbie Brennan.

“We are still talking to people and it would be totally unfair to comment on speculation,” said Mescall.

Finding a manager has proven to be a very exhaustive process. Westmeath lost to Derry on June 15 and Dolan’s resignation was confirmed on August 9.

“The committee is working extremely hard on this and it is not an easy task. We have spoken to a number of people, but we have not yet managed to get someone suitable in place. I thought a few weeks ago that we might be in a position to make a proposal, but that was not the case,” Mescall continued.

“The people we are targeting have a lot of commitments and it is proving to be a considerable challenge, but we are asking people to be just a bit more patient. I accept it’s not ideal and we would have liked to have someone in place for the knockout stages of the football championships, but we do want to get the best possible candidate for the position.”

The process was shrouded in controversy when Football Committee chairman Mick Mannion resigned, leaving a committee of Frank Mescall, former manager Jack Cooney and county secretary Brendan Shaw to continue their search. Whoever the new manager is, an internal appointment is most unlikely at this stage.

Westmeath, Clare and Derry and are the three counties who have yet to appoint a new football manager for the 2025 season.
