Albania Sees High Demand For Rare And Expensive Donkey Cheese – Heres What Makes It Special

“Donkey milk has the taste of love,” said Fatiko Basha as she caressed her favourite, Liza, before collecting the animal’s milk. It also makes what is reputed to be one of the most expensive cheeses in the world.

On a small farm in Albania’s southern Gjirokaster region, Basha and her husband Veiz use donkey milk to make cheese, curd or whey.

For thousands of years, it has been praised for its numerous virtues.

The legend says that Cleopatra immersed herself in donkey milk baths that guaranteed her beauty and youth.

Legends aside, it “heals children, is a natural remedy for respiratory tracts, allergies and the immune system”, Fatiko Basha said.

She cleaned one mother’s teats, stroking the animal to try to get her milk flowing, as the foal, Xhoia (“Joy” in Albanian), looked on.

“Regardless of their age, donkeys are like children,” Veiz said with a smile.

They need a lot of affection to produce milk, he said as the donkey started to bray to get his attention.

The donkeys have to be lactating of course, and milking starts when the foal is three months old.

Donkey milk became popular during the Covid-19 pandemic, which was when the Bashas decided to bring several to their farm.

Before long they were selling their milk not just in Albania but in Greece, Montenegro and North Macedonia.

Now, with around 30 females and four males, they plan to enlarge the herd from January, taking advantage of the natural pastures at the foot of the Gjirokaster mountains.

Nor are the Bashas the only ones tapping into the market: across the region, there are around fifteen donkey farms.

    – ‘White gold’ –

Donkey milk may be as exceptional as its producers claim, but it is also rare.

You can expect to get only half a litre of milk (a little less than a pint) per animal per day.

That scarcity is what makes it so expensive, costing between 50 and 60 euros ($53 to 63) per kilo.

“Donkey milk is white gold,” said Veiz Basha: hard to harvest, but every drop makes you happy.

For the past year, the Basha family has been producing creamy homemade cheese, as well as curd and whey, buying additional milk from local farmers.

“There is a high demand for donkey cheese, which is difficult to prepare,” said their daughter Xhiko Basha, who prepares cheese for a local restaurant at her home in the nearby village of Lazarat.

And if the milk is expensive, the cost of the cheese is even higher: to produce just one kilo of cheese you need at least 25 litres of donkey milk — or more than 1,000 euros’ worth.

Sold at over 1,500 euros a kilo, it has the reputation of being one of the most expensive cheeses in the world.

“The French say that a meal without cheese is a beauty missing an eye, but donkey cheese is really the icing on the cake,” said Jaco Meci, a veterinarian who also produces donkey cheese that features on the menu of Tirana restaurants.

Customers prefer it fresh, 48 hours after it has been prepared, said Elio Troque, owner of the Oxhaket restaurant in the capital.

“Expensive but very tasty, it is the perfect accompaniment to a meal with good wine,” he added.

    – A ‘beauty secret’ –

In her small workshop, pharmacist Fabjola Meci does not ferment milk to make cheese, but prepares a range of donkey milk cosmetics that have also gained in popularity in recent years.

“Donkey’s milk is a real beauty secret,” the 24-year-old said as she hurried to finish a final order of an ultra-soft day cream.

Meci has launched her own brand, Leva Natural, and with the festive season approaching she said she hoped to soon be able to export her donkey-milk products worldwide.

And she knows how to sell it, insisting: “The donkey’s milk face cream is a delight… Once you’ve used it, it’s hard to give it up.”

  • Newly-elected World Rugby boss Brett Robinson vows to tackle sport’s ‘financial crisis’, promote women’s game and stop time-wasting – after first southern hemisphere chairman sees off rivals to succeed Sir Bill Beaumont

Newly-elected World Rugby boss Brett Robinson vows to tackle sport’s ‘financial crisis’, promote women’s game and stop time-wasting – after first southern hemisphere chairman sees off rivals to succeed Sir Bill Beaumont

World Rugby’s new chairman, Brett Robinson, has outlined his urgent mission to tackle the sport’s acute financial crisis, after narrowly winning the vote to succeed Sir Bill Beaumont.

The former Australia flanker became the first elected figurehead of the global governing body from the southern hemisphere, by edging out ex-France captain Abdelatif Benazzi 27-25 in the second round of voting.

As expected, it had become a two-horse race when the Italian candidate, Andrea Rinaldo, was eliminated after gaining just nine votes in the first round, compared to 22 for Robinson and 21 for Benazzi.

Having come through the tense, tight ballot at a luxury hotel here in the Irish capital, the 54-year-old victor spoke about his pride and pressing priorities.

‘It’s a great privilege and honour to be elected to chair World Rugby,’ said Robinson. ‘I was honoured to be put up, but to have the game come and support me is fabulous.

‘Work starts today. There are a list of things that (World Rugby’s) Council want from me, having elected me, and I’ve got to start looking at those in some detail.

‘I was very clear leading into the elections that the financial sustainability of our member unions is at crisis point, so we have to find ways, collectively, to deal with that. I was really clear about the need to grow the game, while ensuring our core markets are in a good place.

‘I was clear about the competitions that matter to us – the Nations Championship getting off the ground, the women’s game continuing to grow, and our platform around the Sevens being reset after the Olympics. I was also really clear about listening to our fans.

‘There is not enough ball in play, too much senseless kicking, and we’re not promoting teams to attack. Finally, World Rugby as an organisation has been in the professional era for about 30 years.

‘Now, we’ve got so much to think about as an organisation, what our priorities are, and how we can be fit, lean, and ready to deliver.’

The perception going into the election was that Robinson was a status quo candidate while Benazzi was more focused on overseeing an era of global expansion.

Asked if his aim was to reinforce the game’s core unions and nations rather than targeting new markets, Robinson added: ‘We’ve done some great work in the past few months bringing our top unions together.

‘There are revenue and cost levers we can play with. We did a workshop four weeks ago, and last night the CEOs and chairs of the major unions came together as a follow-on from that. We’re into some detail about those things now.’

This was not only a satisfactory outcome for Australia, it also represented a perfect result for the RFU, who have been able to maintain English influence at the top of World Rugby.

Former England full-back Jonathan Webb will serve as vice-chairman after being elected to the executive board, after the RFU strongly and openly backed Robinson’s campaign.

Benazzi had been confident of victory in the chairman election and as he hurried to leave the hotel after his agonising defeat, he lamented the decision by Rugby Africa to cast their two votes in favour of Robinson.

The Morocco-born candidate had evidently expected to be supported by the region whose leading nation, South Africa, were staunchly supportive of Benazzi’s bid for the lead role.

Shortly after the voting concluded, the president of Rugby Africa, Herbert Mensah – a Ghanaian businessman and sports administrator – could be seen posing for selfies with Robinson. It emerged that Mensah had been voted on to the new executive board.

Another man hoping to gain one of those coveted seats at the top table was former Argentina captain Agustin Pichot, who had narrowly lost the previous chairman election to Beaumont in 2020. However, the popular Pumas legend missed out, as did the president of Rugby South America, Sebastian Pineyrua.

Jennifer Lopez Sees Ben Affleck’s New Lifestyle Changes as a ‘Total Slap in the Face,’ Source Says

Jennifer Lopez officially called it quits on her marriage to Ben Affleck by filing for divorce in August 2024. The couple stayed together for two years before deciding to part ways. While the split appears amicable as they go through the proceedings, Affleck is reportedly making new lifestyle changes that Lopez would’ve loved to have seen during their marriage. Here’s what a source said regarding her feelings about his changes.

Jennifer Lopez thinks Ben Affleck’s lifestyle changes post-divorce filing are a ‘slap in the face’

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck started their divorce in August 2024. However, their filing states that they officially separated as a couple in April 2024. Neither Lopez nor Affleck appear to be dating anyone just yet. Lopez recently opened up in an interview regarding how she’s excited to focus on herself in this next chapter of her life. As for Affleck, rumors flew that he and Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy had a budding romance. But those rumors seemed to have dropped off.

A source told In Touch Weekly that Affleck has started making serious lifestyle changes as he reenters the dating scene. “Ben is suddenly going out of his way to pamper himself and look his absolute best,” the insider alleged. “He’s now dying his hair, getting manicures and pedicures, getting waxed from head to toe. He’s even getting hair plugs and seeing the dermatologist for skin treatments to turn back the clock.”

Affleck seemed to show off his new look in early October while out with his child, Fin. The father of three sported a button-down shirt, black dress pants, a freshly trimmed beard, and dyed hair. The source added that Lopez is “seeing red” over Affleck’s changes, “because these are all the things she wanted him to do when they were together, and he totally refused.”

“It feels like a total slap in the face because it’s sending this message that she wasn’t worth making these changes for, but now that he’s single and looking to impress new women, he’s willing to step it up and stop being such a slob,” the insider continued.

Ben Affleck is reportedly cutting out cigarettes and junk food as he reenters the dating scene

Ben Affleck is allegedly ready to make serious life changes in the wake of his second divorce. Not only has he started to cut his cigarette smoking and love of junk food, but he’s also hitting the gym. Another source told In Touch Weekly that Affleck hopes to tighten up his legs and glutes via his workouts, as he’s neglected his lower body through the years.

The “divorce has him wanting to really buff up and get into the best possible shape — especially now that he’s back on the dating scene,” the insider continued, adding that Affleck might also look into getting more tattoos.

Jennifer Lopez is also “working out like crazy,” a source told Life & Style. “Jennifer hates the direction her life has taken, and she can’t control what Ben’s doing, but she can manipulate her diet and exercise regime,” the source alleged.

J.Lo, her soon-to-be ex-husband, and Jennifer Garner nearly had an awkward run-in

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner nearly ran into Jennifer Lopez at an event in Brentwood, Los Angeles, in October 2024. Lopez attended the event with friends and her child, Emme Muñiz, 16. According to DailyMail.com, Affleck and Garner were seen walking through the same area as Lopez with their child, Fin, 15.

Lopez, Affleck, and Garner all dressed casually at the event. Lopez wore a light gray jumpsuit with a tie waist and nude pumps. Garner wore jeans and a black sweater, while Affleck opted for light blue jeans, a red shirt, and a red corduroy jacket.

Raymond Lifestyle shares surge 5.5% as MOSL initiates coverage with ‘buy’ rating, sees 35% upside

Domestic brokerage house Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOSL) initiated coverage on Raymond Lifestyle, a recent spin-off from Raymond Ltd, with a ‘buy’ rating and a target price of 3,200, suggesting an upside potential of over 35 per cent for the stock.

Following the announcement, shares of Raymond Lifestyle surged more than 5.5 per cent in Monday’s trading session. MOSL projects that the company’s revenue and net profit will grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively from FY24 to FY27.

“Although the valuation of Raymond’s Lifestyle (RLL) business has almost doubled since the demerger, the stock is currently trading at a relatively lower P/E and an EV/EBITDA (pre-Ind-AS-116) of 25x and 16x on FY26E, respectively. The valuation is significantly lower than that of our Coverage Universe and other retail and discretionary companies, which are valued at an EV/EBITDA of ~35-40x on FY26E. While RLL benefits from strong brand affinity, its valuation has been impeded by sluggish execution in the past (volatility in PAT growth over FY10-20). However, as RLL continues to exhibit a positive growth trajectory, characterised by revenue/PAT CAGR of 11%/15% over FY24-26E, we believe valuations could re-rate,” said the brokerage.

“Additionally, we anticipate a return on invested capital (ROIC) of 24%, 26%, and 30% in FY25, FY26, and FY27, respectively. With improved FCF generation, RLL could look to increase shareholder returns through dividends,” it added.

Raymond Lifestyle emerged as a standalone entity after the demerger from Raymond Ltd, positioning itself as a pure-play lifestyle company. With a strong presence in the men’s wear segment, RLL commands a significant market share of around 65 per cent in worsted suiting. Its portfolio includes a wide range of branded textiles, operating in both B2B and B2C segments. The company also boasts several popular apparel brands, such as Park Avenue, ColorPlus, and Ethnix by Raymond, catering to formal, casual, and ethnic wear categories. Notably, RLL holds about 5 per cent of the men’s wedding wear market, showcasing its prominence in the sector.

In terms of stock performance, Raymond Lifestyle was listed on the NSE on September 5 at 3,020. The stock has gained over 17 per cent from its post-listing low of 2,081. However, it still trades below its listing day close of 2,869. Despite this, analysts remain optimistic about the stock’s future, supported by the company’s solid brand presence, wide distribution network, and ambitious growth plans.

    Investment Rationale

MOSL highlighted several growth drivers for RLL, including its fast-paced expansion in branded apparel, targeting a doubling of its exclusive brand outlets (EBOs). The company is also positioned to benefit from Bangladesh+1 and China+1 trends in B2B garmenting, it said. Additionally, the launch of new categories like innerwear and sleepwear as well as a shift towards casualisation and premiumisation of its product portfolio are expected to contribute to its growth, said MOSL. Enhanced sourcing efficiencies due to scale could further improve its operating leverage.

In recent years, Raymond Group has undertaken strategic initiatives such as demerger of its lifestyle and real estate businesses, restructuring of its engineering division, and sale of its FMCG business. These moves have streamlined the group into distinct listed entities focused on lifestyle, real estate, and engineering, aimed at enhancing shareholder value. Each business is professionally managed with a focus on maintaining a net cash balance sheet, optimising costs, and effectively managing working capital.

Despite historically facing challenges related to growth, profitability, and a high working capital cycle, RLL has made significant progress, the brokerage said, adding that it has improved its working capital management, achieved a net cash position ahead of schedule, and enhanced its pre-IFRS EBITDA margins through store rationalisation and cost control measures.

Under the leadership of Sunil Kataria, former GCPL executive, RLL’s margins have improved to approximately 12 per cent in FY24, up from single-digit levels between FY17 and FY20. Going forward, RLL is focused on accelerating growth in branded apparel, expanding its network, and introducing new categories such as sleepwear and innerwear, alongside scaling up its Ethnix by Raymond brand.

2024 Cook Islands Games Athletics sees the future stars shine bright Oceania Athletics Association

Three National Records, 500 Athletes, 109 events, 40 officials, u18s, Opens, and Masters Athletes competing all together. All brought together by a successful collaboration between Cook Islands Sport and Oceania Athletics Association.

The 3rd Cook Islands Games Athletics Competition, held on October 11th and 12th, 2024 in Nikao, saw 500 athletes compete across 109 events. Athletics was part of the two week multi sport event will featuring, rugby, netball and traditional canoe racing. The event aims to showcase local talent amongst the Cook Islands brining the 15 Islands together after the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The event was a result of collaboration between Athletics Cook Islands, Cook Islands Sports, and the Oceania Athletics Association, providing a platform for athletes to compete at a national level.

A total of 381 medals were awarded, and 40 officials oversaw the event. Athletes participated in Open, Masters, and Under 18 categories. The World Athletics ranking meet featured on the Global Calendar. The Cook Islands joins 6 other Federations in the Area to have their National Championships globally.

    Three national records were broken:
    •        Kingston Pupuke-Robati in the Under 18 Men’s Shotput with a throw of 15.50 m
    •        Metuaiviivitoa Herman in the Open Men’s Discus with a throw of 45.00m

Prior to the competition Athletes Cook Islands hosted training sessions to help athletes maximised the opportunity to prepare for the Championships.

President of Athletics Cook Islands Simone Fe’ao:
We had an epic 2 days full of athletics. The weather looked like it was going to make it hard for us but after a short burst of sideways rain the weather cleared and we had some brilliant competition. Some new talent identified which bodes well for the future of our sport

In addition to some great athlete performances, we had some great achievements as a federation. We were able to raise the standard this year with the inclusion of photo finish and electronic timing through our partnership with Oceania Athletics and have this event now included on the WA Global Calendar as a World Ranking Competition. Following our training academy earlier this year, we had 6 local officials complete their practical components and get signed off for the NAR certification.

This is a firm foundation for us to continue to build our infrastructure as we work towards hosting the Minigames in 2029.”

For Yvonne Mullins, Executive Director, Oceania Athletics, this was her first time at the Cook Islands Games, but in her words ‘hopefully more to come’!

“It was a great two days of competition, with athletes competing for their own regions. There was certainly rivalry between athletes who are usually on the same team, but there was also a sense of comradery. I have no doubt that the strength of Athletics in the Cook Islands over the years leading into the Pacific Mini Games in 2029, will hinge on this Cook Islands Games, where more rivalry will lead to more competitions and more great results. The Games, I hope will fuel local athletes to get more involved in athletics.”

  • Palestinian athlete sees himself as a voice for his people

Palestinian athlete sees himself as a voice for his people

PARIS : Nine months ago, Fadi Aldeeb missed several calls from his brother. The next day, he found out that he had been killed in an Israeli attack on his home.

Aldeeb, the only Palestinian athlete at the Paris Paralympics, left the Gaza Strip a decade ago for a wheelchair basketball career that took him to Turkey and Greece before France.

“On December 6, I had a French league game and when I was finished I found my brother had called me many times… I tried to call back but there was no connection,” Aldeeb, who took part in the Paralympics shot put, told Reuters.

“The 7th of December at night I received (the news) that ‘Okay, your brother was killed in an attack on our building’,” said Aldeeb, adding that he often wonders what his brother’s last message was.

In Paris, Aldeeb is feeling the pressure of being what he says is the voice of his people at the Paralympics.

“It’s too many feelings, too much responsibility, because I’m not speaking about myself, I’m not playing for myself. I’m here for 11 million, for all who say I’m a Palestinian, for all who talk about humanity, and to talk about the freedom of Palestine,” he said.

“When we are raising the flag here in Paris, we are (showing we are) still alive, we still we need our human rights, we still need our freedom,” he said.

The Palestine Olympic Committee was recognised three decades ago by the International Olympic Committee. Gaza has a population of about 2.3 million people, and millions more Palestinians live elsewhere.

    OTHER ATHLETES’ SUPPORT

Aldeeb, 40, said he became paraplegic after being shot in the back by an Israeli soldier in 2001 during the second Intifada, or uprising, against Israeli occupation.

He raises his voice when talking about life in Gaza, where the Health Ministry says over 40,000 people have been killed since Israel began an offensive against the militant group Hamas that led an attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7 last year.

About 1,200 people were killed and around 250 were taken hostage in the attack, according to Israeli tallies.

Aldeeb, who will resume playing wheelchair basketball in the Paris suburb of Genevilliers after the Paralympics, sees Israel’s military as a “killing machine”.

“There is no difference (for Israel’s military) between athletes, disabled or non-disabled, children or women, big or small homes, hospitals, hotels, universities or school,” he said.

Israel says its offensive is aimed against Hamas, not civilians. It accuses Hamas fighters of using public buildings such as hospitals to hide in, putting civilians at risk, and says it takes great precautions to limit harm to civilians.

Aldeeb made clear he felt uncomfortable with the presence of Israeli athletes in Paris, which held a ceremony before the Games to pay tribute to Israeli Olympic team members killed by Palestinian gunmen at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

But welcoming support he had received from other competitors, he said: “I’m not feeling that I’m alone or feeling like I’m alone, these people really, it’s amazing and incredible, they give me a feeling of humanity.”

A far-left lawmaker said before the Olympics, also held in Paris this summer, that Israel’s delegation was not welcome and called for protests against its participation. France said after his remark that Israeli athletes would have 24-hour protection.

The Olympic charter states that competitors at the Olympic Games should enjoy freedom of expression but that no “political propaganda” is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas. Aldeeb was speaking outside the Olympic village.
