    The couple are said to have flown to Ibiza via private jet in August, where they enjoyed a ‘quick trip’ together, dining out on the harbour where they shared a romantic candlelit meal.

    Cole was named PFA Young Player of the Year following his breakthrough season at Chelsea. The England midfielder scored 22 goals and made 11 assists during what was a disappointing campaign for his club, who finished sixth in the Premier League.

    But the footballer’s performances on the pitch proved to be the big positive for his side.

    The couple’s sweet moment while he proudly showed off his PFA Young Player of the Year award came after the pair were spotted on holiday together in Ibiza at the start of August following reports of their ‘growing friendship.’  

    Cole’s summer break gave him the chance to spend quality time with Connie, 22, after he scored in the Euros final against Spain, which England went on to lose 2-1.

    Meanwhile, Cole was interviewed on the red carpet on Tuesday night for a range of hilarious social media videos which were released on GQ’s TikTok page.  

    When asked whether he would rather score an own goal or be subbed off in the first half, the footballer said: ‘Own goal. When you get subbed in the first half, it’s bad. It just damages your reputation. It’s never happened to me touch wood.’ 

    The interviewer went on to ask whether he would rather score a goal from the half way line or net a bicycle kick – to which Palmer responded: ‘That’s tough, I don’t know. I feel like a bicycle kick is harder. I can’t really do a bicycle. I can practice though.’ 

    Earlier this month, England stars Cole and Kobbie Mainoo posed as cover stars for GQ’s magazine’s Men of the Year edition.

    The publication said the edition aims to celebrate men who are ‘breaking the rules, changing the game, and taking their slice of the culture to another level’.

    Palmer and Mainoo feature after the pair enjoyed stunning seasons at club level and played a role in England reaching the Euro 2024 final.

    The pair were jointly interviewed by the magazine for the December issue, with the headline ‘Kobbie Mainoo & Cole Palmer Are Just Getting Started’.

    Mainoo and Palmer told GQ that the pair had become close friends during the tournament in Germany, despite starring for rival Premier League clubs.

    Palmer made a stunning impact during his debut season at Chelsea after his summer move from Man City.

    Men and women will race in the same 100 metres relay at a major event for the first time at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship.

    A mixed 4x100m relay – which could see British record holders Dina Asher-Smith and Zharnel Hughes team up – has been included in the streamlined schedule for the new biennial global competition in 2026.

    However, a number of traditional disciplines have been omitted from the programme for the big-money meet in Budapest, including heptathlon, meaning Britain’s world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson will not have the chance to compete for a record $150,000 (£119,000).

    The Ultimate Championship – which was first announced in June – has been created to ensure each athletics season concludes with a global event. It will be held every even year, with the existing World Championships continuing in the odd years.

    The introduction of a mixed 4x100m relay – which will be trialled during next year’s Diamond League – follows the success of the mixed 4x400m relay, which has featured in the last two Olympics.

    ‘The mixed 4x100m relay is just one example of how we want to do this event differently,’ World Athletics chief executive Jon Ridgeon told Mail Sport in Budapest. ‘We think it will be a great success because the mixed 4x400m has been great fun.

    ‘We are still working out the exact format. Over the next few months, we will test the permutations of who hands over to who. But I almost hope that it is going to be a free for all because that will be most exciting.’

    The inaugural Ultimate Championship will be held over three nights at the National Athletics Stadium in Budapest in September 2026, with each session lasting no more than three hours to suit TV.

    The limited timeframe means a number of disciplines have been cut, including multi-events heptathlon and decathlon, track races the 10,000m and 3,000m steeplechase, plus field events the discus and shot put.

    ‘Of course there will be athletes who are disappointed,’ said Ridgeon. ‘But if you are going to create a new product, you have to decide on the philosophy of that product, and all the advice we got is it needs to be fast-moving and time limited, so there sadly isn’t time to do a heptathlon or decathlon.

    ‘The whole look, brand and feeling of the event will be unique in terms of what we have done before. We are very aware that this event can’t just be an Olympics or World Championships-lite.

    ‘It is a matter of trying to piece together the timetable and see how the different bits work together for optimal excitement and drama in the evening.

    ‘But no athlete should get the impression that any event is being phased out or not loved by World Athletics. This is only for 2026 and we will assess again in 2028 and it may well be a different roster of disciplines.’

    Just 16 athletes will be invited to compete at the Ultimate Championship in each track event, which will start at the semi-final stage, along with the eight competitors in each field discipline, which will only have a final.

    Athletes will qualify via world rankings – although there will be wildcards for defending Olympic, world or Diamond League champions – and there will be no cap on the number of competitors per nation. ‘The core philosophy of the event is it’s the best of the best,’ said Ridgeon.

    The overall prize pot is a record $10million (£7.94m), with the $150,000 on offer for each winner more than double the $70,000 earned by gold medallists at the last World Championships.

    ‘We are always looking to increase the money that goes to the athletes,’ said Ridgeon. ‘We want to make sure that being a professional athlete is a sustainable, lucrative life.’

    It is hoped the BBC will broadcast the Ultimate Championship, just like they do the World Championships and Olympics.

    ‘This is not about maximising the income and putting it behind a paywall, this is about making sure the maximum number of eyeballs around the world can see it,’ said Ridgeon. ‘A lot of the broadcasters who currently show the Olympics and World Championships will be our natural partners for this event.’

    The 2026 competition could also be the first time that the long jump uses a take-off zone rather than a take-off board, despite athletes heavily criticising the proposed change to the historic discipline when it was first muted at the start of the year.

    ‘The take-off zone is one of the things that we continue to test,’ said Ridgeon. ‘If it tests well, that is the sort of thing that could be introduced at 2026 or at a later date. But it has to test well and be accepted by the sport.’

    Ridgeon revealed that World Athletics are also trialling the 200m hurdles as an event, something which last featured at an Olympics in 1904.

    ‘From our research, we know the hurdles are popular,’ he said. ‘It’s an event that could bring together sprint hurdlers and 400m hurdles which is quite interesting. These are the sort of things we are testing.’

    Meanwhile, Ridgeon insists World Athletics are not threatened by Michael Johnson’s new big-money series, Grand Slam Track.

    Johnson’s league launches next year, with four three-day meets between April and June and prize money of $100,000 for the winners of each category. Brits Josh Kerr, Matthew Hudson-Smith and Daryll Neita are among the stars to have signed up.

    The second Grand Slam Track event in Miami in May clashes with the second Diamond League – World Athletics’ top-tier series – meet in China.

    But Ridgeon added: ‘It is not a rival to anything we do. Our view is that we encourage new money and new opportunity into the sport.

    ‘We take it as a sign that the sport is in pretty good shape if new investors are looking to come in and add value. All we ask for is new organisers to work with us to make sure dates work as far as they can.’

    Heading into Friday’s games, which marked the final week of the regular season, there was a known understanding of who was in and who was out when it came to reaching the Virginia High School League (VHSL) playoffs.

    Sunday saw the official regional playoff brackets released and there is a strong representation of Fredericksburg-area schools included.

    What Friday did provide was some thrilling football to help better determine seeding, highlighted by a big comeback win for Eastern View over Courtland. The win helped the Cyclones finish second in the Battlefield District in a competitive district rivalry played out in Culpeper.

    “We were guaranteed a playoff game,” Cyclones head coach Brian Lowery said. “It’s always better going into it with a win.”

    Of the teams who made the VHSL playoffs locally, seven of those teams won on Friday, building positive momentum going into the playoffs.

    For those teams who didn’t, it’s back to the drawing board this week. Everyone now has a clean slate to write their own stories and create their own positive momentum for a deep postseason run.

    “Now is not the time to be divided,” Courtland head coach JC Hall said. “We need to come together. … There are a lot of teams turning in their equipment and going home. We’re very fortunate to be in this situation and we have to take advantage of it.”

    Eagles bounced in VISAA state semifinals

    Two weeks ago, Fredericksburg Christian came into its regular season finale against Blue Ridge with a chance to shock the region, go unbeaten and take the No. 1 overall seed in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II state playoffs.

    However, over its final two games, including Saturday’s state semifinal against North Cross, the Eagles were outscored, 97-6, losing 49-6 to Blue Ridge and 48-0 to the Raiders over the weekend.

    That loss on Saturday brought the 2024 season to a close for FCS, but not before a nine-win campaign. It marked the Eagles’ most wins in a season since 2018, where they won a state title.

    “I’m extremely proud of all the players and coaches,” Eagles head coach David DeArmas said. “… I’m most impressed with the toughness we showed this season. For nine straight weeks, we let our opponents know they were in for a four quarter battle with us.”

    The Eagles lose six impact seniors for next season, five of them with offers to play at the next level, but the youth in this program currently has DeArmas excited for the future.

    “We played a lot of young guys this season, who all got much needed experience,” DeArmas said. “Can’t wait to see the work they put in this off-season.”

    Cavaliers miss out on playoffs

    Six games into this season with a date against King George ahead of them, Caroline football was firing on all cylinders, sitting at 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Battlefield District.

    From that game against the Foxes on, the Cavaliers lost their footing and in turn, a chance to make the postseason.

    The Foxes came into Caroline County and took down the Cavs, 47-2, spoiling their homecoming game. Then, two-straight one-score losses against Colonial Heights and Courtland, respectively, turned a 5-1 season into a 5-4 reality.

    Friday’s 42-14 win over James Monroe helped secure a winning season at 6-4, but it was too little, too late as Caroline finished outside the cutline.

    Our menu is all about honouring Mexican roots, especially with tequila and mezcal. We showcase these spirits’ unique flavours by pairing them with ingredients that highlight their character and using techniques that bring out their depth. Every cocktail tells a story, and it’s our way of sharing a taste of Mexico.

    2. There’s been a growing interest in agave-based spirits around the world. What do you think about this trend?

    It’s amazing to see agave spirits getting the recognition they deserve. They’re incredibly complex and versatile, and people around the world are starting to appreciate that. This trend is connecting drinkers globally to Mexican culture and the craftsmanship behind each bottle.

    Yes, a few of our cocktails do take up to 48 hours to come together! It’s because we use techniques like infusions and clarifications, which take time but really elevate the flavours. The longer process allows the ingredients to meld perfectly, so when it reaches your glass, it’s a whole new experience.

    4. Can you share any unusual ingredients that you’ve recently experimented with in your cocktails?

    Lately, we’ve been having fun with ingredients like brown butter and mushrooms. They add depth and richness that you might not expect in a cocktail, but the response has been great! Guests are loving the bold flavours and unique twists.

    5. Your speakeasy has been ranked number one in the world. How do you plan to continue to push boundaries?

    We’re incredibly grateful for the recognition-it means a lot. But it also inspires us to keep innovating. We’re constantly experimenting with new techniques and flavour combinations, always with a nod to the classics. It’s about delivering a unique experience every time, for every guest.

    6. Looking ahead, how do you see the future of Mexican mixology evolving, both locally and on the international stage?

    Mexican mixology is definitely on the rise. The world’s interest in agave spirits and traditional Mexican techniques means we’ll see a lot more innovation and respect for our craft. I think it’ll bring Mexican bartending to new heights globally.

    After a regular season in which the Lycoming College women’s soccer team won a school-record 14 games to earn the No. 2 seed in the Landmark Conference Championship, the team will host its first postseason game in program history, a conference semifinal against No. 6 Moravian, on Thursday at 7 p.m. at UPMC Field.

    Tickets for the game cost $10 for adults (18+) and $5 for both minors (ages 10-17). Landmark Conference students, faculty and staff can enter free with their campus ID. Tickets can be purchased online. Lycoming season passes will not be accepted for Landmark Conference Championship events.

    The winner of the Thursday’s game at UPMC Field will face the winner of the other Landmark Conference semifinal between No. 1 Scranton and No. 4 Drew, which will occur at the same time as the Williamsport semifinal.

    The Warriors (14-2-3 overall, 6-1-2 Landmark Conference) finished the regular season ranked second in the Landmark Conference in scoring (2.053) and saves (103). The Warriors led the conference with 123 corner kicks and finished fourth with a .842 save percentage.

    Five players — sophomore Ella Magee (9), sophomore and Lewisburg grad Mikayla Long (9), junior Aubrey Williamson (6), junior Abigail Umhoefer (4), and sophomore Julia Bidelspach (4) — are amongst the conference’s top 15 goal-scorers. Magee and Umhoefer are also tied for third in the league with three game-winning goals a piece.

    Williamson leads the conference with seven assists and four other Warriors also rank in the top 15 in the Landmark: sophomore Kaitlyn Born (6), senior Haley Schafer (5), Magee (3), and Long (3).

    The duo of Long and Magee are the only pair in the conference from the same team with more than 20 points, while Williamson is just a point away from the mark, having posted six goals and seven assists.

    Junior goalkeeper Riley Block leads the conference with a .904 save percentage and is fourth in goals against average (0.633) and shutouts per game (0.333). She is 10-1-2 this season.

    Moravian beat No. 3 seed Elizabethtown, 1-0, in double overtime, when Carly Pyatt scored with 4:50 remaining in the period.

    Moravian keeper Riley Spingler is second in the conference with a 0.511 goals against average and a .879 save percentage. Her 10 shutouts is third in the conference. Carly Pyatt is fifth in the conference with seven goals and sixth with 17 points.

    NCAA soccer rules change for postseason play with the addition of overtime and penalty kick shootouts. If the teams are tied at the end of a regulation, 90-minute game, then the teams will play two additional full 10-minute periods. If neither team is ahead at the end of the overtime periods, the teams will advance to a shootout. Each team takes five shots, which must be taken by different players, and the team that makes more successful kicks is declared the victor. Shoot-outs finish as soon as one team posts an insurmountable lead. After five rounds, additional rounds are added until there is a winner.

    Later that same day, it was confirmed by the club and Edu himself, with Arteta since breaking his silence on the departure of a key club ally.

    Obviously, concerns have since emerged over the club’s transfer planning. Reliable journalist Simon Collings shared a comforting update in this regard, saying Arsenal’s remaining executives can handle major dealings after Edu’s departure.

    It was also stated that Arsenal’s transfer groundwork is often done a year in advance, so it appears they could already be prepared for January and next summer.

    According to Sky Germany and journalist Kerry Hau, as transcribed by Sport Witness, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson is a man on their agenda in the wake of Edu’s exit.

    Arsenal have Larsson “in their sights” to sign, alongside the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham, with the 20-year-old starting this season impressively. The six-cap Swede boasts three goals and an assist from his opening 14 matches, with Hau also calling Larsson an “exciting” player to watch out for.

    “Hugo Larsson is one of Eintracht Frankfurt’s shooting stars and is currently one of the most exciting midfielders in the Bundesliga,” he said.

    “The 20-year-old Swede has already aroused the interest of several top clubs. According to our information, the Premier League is currently looking at him.

    “Some top-class teams, right behind Liverpool FC, Arsenal FC and also Tottenham Hotspur, we hear, have Larsson in their sights, but also one or two Bundesliga competitors.

    Out-of-favour Wigan Athletic striker Josh Stones is reportedly set to be allowed to leave the club on loan amid interest from two National League clubs.




    That’s according to journalist Alan Nixon, who claims that National League promotion hopefuls Oldham Athletic and York City are both plotting a move for Stones as he continues to struggle for game time at the Brick Community Stadium.

    Stones had a promising loan spell with Oldham last season, scoring three goals and providing three assists in four games after joining the club in December, but his time at Boundary Park was cut short the following month due to injury.

    The 20-year-old has scored one goal in six games for the Latics this season, but he has made just three substitute appearances in League One, and he was left out of the matchday squad for the 2-0 win at Carlisle United in the FA Cup first round on Saturday.

    With his minutes set to remain limited, Stones is said to be keen to leave Wigan in search of regular football elsewhere, and while a loan exit is the most likely possibility, his permanent departure cannot be ruled out.

    After the impressive impact Stones made at Oldham under Micky Mellon [pictured] last season, there was speculation that he could return to the club in the summer, but a deal did not materialise.

    Wigan manager Shaun Maloney opted to keep Stones in Lancashire, and he was full of praise for the striker after he scored his side’s opening goal in the 2-0 win at Carlisle in the EFL Trophy last month.

    “He was very good,” Maloney told Wigan Today.

    “There’s still moments, I think his hold up play can be even better. But I thought his overall performance was very good.

    “I was really happy with Josh today. His work-rate was outstanding.


    “I’m glad he scored, and I just felt that the front three of Michael, Josh and Jonny Smith, they pressed really hard and were very aggressive. With and without the ball today, we were good.”

    However, Stones’ goalscoring contribution at Brunton Park has not been enough for him to force his way into Maloney’s plans in the league, and he could now make another loan move to the National League, with Oldham and York set to battle his signature.

    Despite only narrowly avoiding relegation last season, York currently sit top of the table after a remarkable start to the campaign, while Oldham are fifth and just five points behind the Minstermen in what is an incredibly competitive race for the automatic promotion spot.

    While York have shown an interest in Stones, Wigan are said to prefer a return to Oldham for the striker, and it remains to be seen whether he will depart on a temporary or permanent basis – albeit it is more likely it will be on loan.

    While Stones is clearly a player with potential, it seems unlikely he will receive much game time at Wigan this season, so a move away from the club would be a sensible option.

    Despite the fact the Latics have scored just 12 goals in their first 13 league games this season, failing to find the back of the net on seven occasions, Stones has still not been given a chance by Maloney, suggesting he does not believe he is ready for League One.

    Stones has had two loan spells away from Wigan since joining the club from Guiseley in the summer of 2022, so he could now be keen to make a permanent exit, but the Latics may be reluctant to sell him just yet.


    With York looking stronger automatic promotion contenders than Oldham, the LNER Community Stadium could be an exciting destination for Stones, and he would get the chance to develop under Adam Hinshelwood, who is regarded as one of the best managers outside the EFL.

    However, Stones thrived during his loan spell at Boundary Park last season before sustaining an injury, so a return to Micky Mellon’s side will no doubt be appealing for him, and it looks to be the most likely outcome at this point.

    The Cobbers’ win sets up a duel against Bethel — a 56-7 winner over Carleton on Saturday — with first place in the MIAC’s Skyline Division on the line.

    The Cobbers (5-1 MIAC, 6-2) and the Royals (5-1 MIAC, 7-1) are both 3-0 in the Skyline and play at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in Moorhead.

    St. John’s (6-0 MIAC, 8-0) leads the Northwood Division with a 3-0 mark. Gustavus and St. Olaf are both 2-1 in the Northwoods. The Johnnies and St. Olaf play at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in Collegeville, Minn.

    On Saturday, Augsburg offered little resistence as the Cobbers sought to earn their crack at the division crown.

    The Cobbers built a three-score lead by halftime and Owen Miller returned the opening kickoff of the second half 89 yards for a touchdown and a 28-0 lead. Miller scored the final TD of the first half on a 38-yard connection with quarterback Cooper Mattern.

    Mattern hit Jed Klang for 8 yards and a touchdown in the final seconds of the first quarter and Gunner Martinek capped a six-play, 70-yard drive with a 4-yard run midway through the second quarter.

    On the first play after Miller’s kickoff return touchdown, Concordia’s McHale Korf forced an Augsburg fumble and Jacob Pipho recovered at the Auggies’ 28 yard line. Two plays later, Mattern hit Davion Henderson on a 24-yard scoring pass with 13:38 left in the third quarter.

    Cobbers kicker Damien Silas hit a 34-yard field goal with 3:54 left in the third. The Auggies broke up the shutout on Ryan Harvey’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Wilson with a minute to play in the third.

    The Cobbers had 343 total yards and limited Augsburg to 213 total yards.

    Mattern was 16 of 20 passing for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Miller had four catches for 93 yards and a touchdown, Henderson made seven catches for 87 yards and a TD, and Klang had four receptions for 63 yards and a score.

    Stuart DeMerit was in on seven tackles and broke up three passes. Ryan Weber had five tackles, including a sack, and Collin Thompson had four solo stops, all for lost yards and three of which were sacks. Jaiden Musse had a sack among his four tackles and Pipho had four solo tackles and the fumble recovery.

    Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been spotted back in a football stadium for the first time since his sacking earlier this week. 

    The Dutchman’s reign as United boss ended on Monday morning following their controversial 2-1 defeat by West Ham. 

    Ten Hag’s two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford yielded FA Cup and Carabao Cup honours but his side underperformed in the league, especially in his final full season, which ended with club finishing eighth – their lowest-ever position in the Premier League. 

    Ten Hag swiftly jetted back home to the Netherlands following his dismissal and he has now been spotted attending a match in the Dutch Eredivisie between Heracles Almelo and NAC Breda.

    The 54-year-old was on hand to witness the home side claim a 2-0 win thanks to a brace from Brian De Keersmaecker at the Erve Asito stadium.
