Presenters Kelly Cates, Hayley McQueen and Christine Lampard set to launch new Overlap podcast series ‘Not Just Football’- as the trio aim to build on the successes Gary Neville’s ‘Stick to Football’ show

Sky Sports presenters Kelly Cates and Hayley McQueen are launching a new Overlap podcast series called ‘Not Just Football’ alongside ITV’s Christine Lampard on October 8.

The trio will host a weekly show reacting to football’s biggest talking points from a unique angle as they look to share their expertise from their experiences within the game.

The series will also tackle a variety of different topics outside of the sport, with the presenters interviewing experts and stars from different backgrounds.

Cates’ and McQueen’s relationship spans back to their childhood due to their father’s Kenny Dalglish and Gordon McQueen playing together with the Scotland national team throughout the 1970s and 80s.

With Lampard – the wife of Chelsea legend Frank – joining them in the The Overlap‘s newest venture brought to you by Sky Bet, the presenters are hoping their chemistry will bring a fresh perspective to football podcasting.

‘What we’re looking for is something from the weekends football that isn’t necessarily being covered elsewhere,’ Cates told Mail Sport. ‘There are so many football podcasts and trying to find something that isn’t done is really tricky.

‘So it’s not about analysis. It’s not necessarily about a deep dive into the tactics of the North London Derby or whatever, but it’s about the stories around it more than that.’

‘Not Just Football’ marks the latest endeavour of the Overlap which produces Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet.

With their newest project looking to ride the wave of success of the award-winning show, hosted by Gary Neville, McQueen believes it’s the right time for the podcast to come out.

The Sky Sports presenter told Mail Sport: ‘It came out of [how] I worked with a lot of the guys at buzz and the guys who are working on the Overlap and Stick to Football and love what they do.

‘I was like “There’s a place for this” with three females discussing topics and things in a slightly different way. We’re not ex-footballers. We’re all linked to ex-footballers or current managers or what have you, and we all have a lot in common.’

Cates has worked with the Overlap in previous years, hosting their live shows as Neville, Jamie Carragher, and Co, travel the country engaging with fans.

The 48-year-old has a strong relationship with Stick to Football hosts Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher due to working with them on Sky Sports

The 48-year-old has built a strong relationship with the pair of former football stars turned pundits by working with them on Sky with regularity over the last decade.

And while she believes it’s too early for ‘Not Just Football’ to rival her colleague’s podcast, Cates sees no reason why it can’t emulate their success in the future.

‘[Stick to Football] is one of my favourites because I know them off camera and on camera, I see them both sides,’ explained Cates.

‘What I really love about it are the moments where you see them and their personalities and their relationships. So I think that’s definitely something that we’re hoping to build on.

‘It’d be a bit brave of us to try and take them on early on. But maybe once we are more established you might think about setting up a bit of a rivalry.’

Meanwhile, McQueen thinks the qualities that the background of Cates, Lampard, and herself, will provide a different type of podcast to that hosted by Neville and Carragher.

‘We’re very different from that,’ added McQueen. ‘We’ve all gone through very different things in life, and I think we’ll be speaking quite openly about some of the challenges that we faced in our personal lives, and in our careers.

‘We’re not going to be there as three women pretending. It’s not going to be like Loose Women, that’s for sure.

‘I think it’ll be very, very different to the current Stick to Football in that none of us have played, but we’ve all been influenced by the game in different ways.’

Not Just Football, brought to you by Sky Bet, is launching on 8th October via The Overlap YouTube channel.

  • FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Sweeny set for crucial district game against Royal | Sports

FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Sweeny set for crucial district game against Royal | Sports

Despite starting the season with three losses, Sweeny Bulldogs head coach Jay Seibert could point to positives in each defeat.

Back-to-back 300-plus yard rushing performances against Van Vleck and state-ranked Bay City were followed by significant growth from the defense, which allowed just 10 points to Stafford in Week 3.

Sweeny regained its footing with back-to-back wins, including an 80-6 rout of Katy Harmony in last week’s District 10-4A, Division 2 opener. It also set the school record for the most points scored in a game.

“A lot of people didn’t realize we only had six returners and had a bunch of guys from the JV and didn’t even play football, so we went through some rough spells, but the team stuck together strong, and I’m excited about the district and about what they’re capable of doing,” Seibert said.

The results in the next three weeks will determine the level of improvement.

This period includes meetings with Brookshire Royal and Columbia, beginning with a trip to Falcon Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday.

“We’ve approached it all week that this is the biggest game of the year to this point,” Seibert said. “In the next three weeks, we have two big games, and to win district, you have to beat Royal and West Columbia.”

La Marque and Wharton remain threats and play each other Friday.

With a win, La Marque would improve to 2-0, but there’s a feeling that the District 10-4A, Division 2 champion, will come from the trio of Columbia, Royal and Sweeny.

There’s extra ammunition for Sweeny based on how last year’s trip to Falcon Stadium ended.

They say losses are what you remember most, and if that’s the case, Royal’s 36-31 come-from-behind win is a reel stuck in a loop in the mind of Sweeny’s staff and players.

“It’s been circled on my calendar because last year we didn’t travel over there very well, we weren’t focused, and we didn’t play great,” Seibert said. “Last year, we went over there and led for 47 of the 48 minutes and lost the game in the last minute.”

The loss began a three-game slide to close the season — which reached six games before Sweeny beat Brazosport in Week 4 — eventually serving as the turning point in Sweeny’s playoff chase.

“If we win that game and hold on, we get second place and make the playoffs, and losing that game pushed us all the out, so it was a devastating loss for us,” Seibert said.

Royal further hurt the Dogs by losing to La Marque the next week, which triggered the rare scenario of Sweeny missing the playoffs.

Columbia benefitted from both results and then beat Royal in the regular-season finale to finish runner-up to Bellville.

Now that there are no Brahmas in the district, the crown will likely go to the team that best navigates the next three weeks.

“We want to put everything together to have a great game and get off to a 2-0 start in district,” Seibert said.

Neither team looks much like the ones that took the field a year ago.

Royal returns more starters but had to replace the sport’s most important position after the transfer of quarterback Ashton Robinson, who accounted for 2,700 yards and 30 touchdowns last season.

“They have a young sophomore quarterback (Mason Hartwell) that is very good, and I know losing the other kid hurts their offense, but this guy has filled in well,” Seibert said.

Royal scored 60 points in its 2-2 start to the season, averaging 15 per game.

The Falcons were on a bye last week, which it likely used to clean up some of the mistakes that have plagued them.

“Their offense is better than what I think people think,” Seibert said. “At times, their offense is extremely explosive and makes some big plays, but they hurt themselves a lot and get in their own way. When they execute and do well, I think they can put some points on the board.”

Royal returns most of its skill players, including utility player Noah Lasker and running back Zakai Anderson, who rushed for more than 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns.

“Their No. 7 (Lasker) is a very explosive kid, and we want to know where he is at all times. They hand him the ball, pitch him the ball, throw him screens and throw it to him downfield,” Seibert said. “They have two or three other skill kids capable of making big plays as well.”

However, the Falcons lack experience up front, and they have had to replace four offensive linemen to protect the young quarterback.

“They do have a young quarterback and offensive line, so the plan is to see if we can create something to make him uncomfortable,” Seibert said.

Sweeny’s defense has settled in after allowing 105 points in the first two games.

It has altered its personnel by playing more players both ways, including running backs Cayden Jones, Rooke Samford and Seth Jammer.

With multiple players rarely leaving the field, last week’s blowout allowed for rest ahead of the meeting with Royal.

“The good thing was we had that game last week, where we were able to give them some rest, and we didn’t quite practice as physical last week, but we’ve amped it back up this week,” Seibert said.

Sweeny’s offense has scored 129 points in its last two games, averaging 38.6 per game for the season.

After failing to establish a complementary option behind Jones, the running back rotation has been settled with the emergence of Samford and Jammer.

Jammer plays tailback, Samford is the halfback and Jones can reach 1,000 yards Friday at fullback.

Royal returned just four starters on defense, but the ones it brought back are in key positions.

“They have two studs on our guards, and we pull our guards, so there’s a thing we have to do to make sure they can get out,” Seibert said. “You’re having to push pretty big guys and still create holes for our running backs to get through.”

Tyler Lavallier and Broderick Burr anchor the Falcons defensive line and can be disruptors in the interior of the 4-3 front.

“They both look like they could play college football next year,” Seibert said. “Those two are a challenge for our interior offensive line, and we must be able to hand them.”

Middle linebacker Malik Hooker is back, and he’s a sideline-to-sideline defender that reads the field well, Seibert said. Royal is inexperienced in the backend but has substantial athleticism in its secondary.

“As a group, they run to the ball well,” Seibert said. “They haven’t scored much, but they haven’t gotten blown out either, but the defense plays well, and you have to earn your touchdowns.”

Royal allows an average of 22 points per game and has held opponents to 15 or fewer points in three of its four games.

The Falcons play Columbia next week. The Roughnecks then travel Oct. 18 to Bulldog Stadium for a meeting with Sweeny.

Soon, a district with plenty of question marks will have clarity or chaos, depending on the next three weeks.

  • Parents will have to set aside some earnings for child influencers under new California laws

Parents will have to set aside some earnings for child influencers under new California laws

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Parents in California who profit from social media posts featuring their children will be required to set aside some earnings for their minor influencers under a pair of measures signed Thursday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

California led the nation nearly 80 years ago in setting ground rules to protect child performers from financial abuse, but those regulations needed updating, Newsom said. The existing law covers children working in movies and TV but doesn’t extend to minors making their names on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

Family-style vlogs, where influencers share details of their daily lives with countless strangers on the internet, have become a popular and lucrative way to earn money for many.

Besides coordinated dances and funny toddler comments, family vlogs nowadays may share intimate details of their children’s lives — grades, potty training, illnesses, misbehaviors, first periods — for strangers to view. Brand deals featuring the internet’s darlings can reap tens of thousands of dollars per video, but there have been minimal regulations for the “sharenthood” industry, which experts say can cause serious harm to children.

“A lot has changed since Hollywood’s early days, but here in California, our laser focus on protecting kids from exploitation remains the same,” he said in a statement. “In old Hollywood, child actors were exploited. In 2024, it’s now child influencers. Today, that modern exploitation ends through two new laws to protect young influencers on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and other social media platforms.”

The California laws protecting child social media influencers follow the first-in-the-nation legislation in Illinois that took effect this July. The California measures apply to all children under 18, while the Illinois law covers those under 16.

The California measures, which received overwhelming bipartisan support, require parents and guardians who monetize their children’s online presence to establish a trust for the starlets. Parents will have to keep records of how many minutes the children appear in their online content and how much money they earn from those posts, among other things.

The laws entitle child influencers to a percentage of earnings based on how often they appear on video blogs or online content that generates at least 10 cents per view. The children could sue their parents for failing to do so.

Children employed as content creators on platforms such as YouTube will also have at least 15% of their earnings deposited in a trust for when they turn 18. An existing state law has provided such protection to child actors since 1939 after a silent film-era child actor Jackie Coogan sued his parents for squandering his earnings.

The new laws will take effect next year.

The laws have the support from The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or, SAG-AFTRA, and singer Demi Lovato, a former child star who has spoken publicly about child performers abuse.

“In order to build a better future for the next generation of child stars, we need to put protections in place for minors working in the digital space,” Lovato said in a statement. “I’m grateful to Governor Newsom for taking action with this update to the Coogan Law that will ensure children featured on social media are granted agency when they come of age and are properly compensated for the use of their name and likeness.”

The new laws protecting child influencers are part of ongoing efforts by Newsom to address the mental health impacts of social media on children. Newsom earlier this month also signed a bill to curb student phone access at schools and ban social media platforms from knowingly providing addictive feeds to children without parental consent.

An English pop rock legend is set to release his first single in 12 years – after his smash-hit 1992 debut made him a household name.

Chesney Hawkes, 52, last released music in 2012 when he put out his third studio album, Real Life Love.

Son of Chip Hawkes, Chesney is  best-known for his first single The One And Only, written by Nik Kershaw.

The One And Only featured, along with Chesney, in 1991 British comedy-drama Buddy’s Song.

The song was number one in the UK for five weeks and even reached the top-10 of the US charts.

Now, Chesney is launching the ultimate comeback, in collaboration with Ed Sheeran and Lady Gaga producer Jake Gosling.

Get A Hold Of Yourself will be released on September 18 and is available for pre-sale now. It hopes to approach the success of The One And Only, unlike its predecessors.

Chesney told The Sun of the track, which will play on Radio 2 on the same day: ‘It’s really strange experiencing this all again – three decades later and with three decades worth of growing up.

‘It’s taken a long time to feel confident enough to really throw myself back into a project but growing up and feeling much more comfortable and freer within myself has allowed that to happen.

‘That’s what Get A Hold Of Yourself is about – getting hold of yourself and being free and not giving a f**k what people think. I think people are going to be surprised that this is a Chesney track. I can’t wait for people to hear it and think they will be surprised by the video for it!

In April, Chesney revealed that he squandered £8.2million after finding such huge success aged just 19.

Speaking on the My Dirty Laundry podcast, Chesney revealed he burned himself out with ‘utter exhaustion’ due to his ‘crazy’ lifestyle.

Admitting he can relate to fellow stars Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran, he urges young people in the industry to ‘be careful and make sure they don’t burn out like he did.’

Chesney admitted: ‘I did that classic thing when I first made it of just blowing everything. I bought a state of the art studio. I bought everyone in my family a car. So yeah, we had fun.

‘My brother Jodie is my drummer and he was with me through the whole time. And yeah, we enjoyed it, because we were young. We were 19 and 17, and we toured all over the world – America, Japan, it was an amazing time.

‘It was like living in the eye of a storm. So I had my family and the people around me in this kind of bubble, you know?

‘I would be thrown into the hurricane and I’d be gone. And then I’m off to Sweden and then I’m off to New York. I never knew where I was waking up for that first year. It was mental. It was really crazy.’

Wunderlich Lane is set to be a premier lifestyle precinct

Wunderlich Lane, set to open at the crossroads of Redfern and Surry Hills, will be a world within a world and home to a wide range of drink and dine establishments, plus wellness and beauty.

The lifestyle precinct will have a collective of restaurants and all-day dining bars, plus beauty, wellness and boutique retail offerings by some of the city’s best operators. It will also include boutique luxury hotel The EVE, event spaces, a fresh food village-style market and creative office space, plus luxurious residences.

Joining the impressive line-up of operators so far announced for Wunderlich Lane with its charming arched, open-air walkways is the LuMi Dining team concept, Regina La Pizzeria, opening in October. Pizzaiolo Matteo Ernandes (ex-Da Orazio; Matteo Double Bay) is at the helm of the Fazzone pizza oven, the first of its kind in Australia, which is handmade by skilled artisans using volcanic stone to help create the perfect balance of crispy crust and tender base.

Also opening in October is Japanese chef Raita Noda’s R by Raita Noda, a premium Japanese dining by day and Noda’s signature omakase-style by night. Gelato Messina is also opening a new store at Wunderlich Lane later this month.

Complementing the hospitality line-up at Wunderlich Lane is an array of incredible wellness, beauty, and lifestyle retailers. Sydney-based Saardé is a design-led brand that offers goods for home, senses and self, with simple pleasures in mind. From October, Wunderlich Lane is the home of the brand’s first flagship store, a lifestyle destination where guests will be invited to immerse themselves in the brand’s signature pared-back style, carefully curated interiors and beautiful sensory experiences.

Natalie Ferrari’s celebrated beauty destination, The Parlour Room, is set to open its third salon and its first outside of Clovelly at Wunderlich Lane in November. It offers premium salon experiences that cherish individual beauty and deeply indulge mind, body, skin and self. Every ritual is uniquely curated to take guests away to a world of self-care. Wunderlich Lane guests will experience a journey of beauty and self-care that nurtures the mind, skin, and soul, where they can be pampered, indulge, and relax.

Several premium wellness concepts are also soon-to-be-announced as joining Wunderlich Lane. These exciting additions join newly opened men’s grooming for the contemporary gentleman, Q Man Barbershop; Beyond Eyecare optometrist; and Surry Hills local favourite Blooms the Chemist which have moved into a brand-new, high-end store.

The Wunderlich Lane precinct, developed by TOGA Group, opens in stages until autumn. The first eagerly awaited hospitality and retail operators begin opening in October and by the end of the year, the precinct will be abuzz with wellness, beauty, retail, and hospitality.

This includes House Made Hospitality’s Island Radio, a restaurant that promises a cacophony of colour, music, and energy, creating a lively dining experience with a menu that draws on the vibrant flavours of Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia and Baptist St. Rec. Club, a neighbourhood cocktail and wine tavern upstairs that will revel in the quirky, bizarre, and eccentric spirit of 1980s and ’90s Australia.

TOGA Group general manager property investment, Jacob Rolls, said: “We’ve spent the best part of four years curating the array of operators opening at Wunderlich Lane to ensure that we have an offering that showcases the best of Sydney and complements this unique and vibrant Surry Hills and Redfern community.

“It’s a thrill to begin sharing who they are, with many more to be announced. They are a significant part of our vision for Wunderlich Lane – to bring this underutilised part of the neighbourhood to life and create a destination that the local community is proud of, and that visitors want to come to.”

Surry Hills is steeped in rich history and culture, and it was important to incorporate and celebrate this into the precinct’s design and spirit. ‘Wunderlich’ is a nod to the location’s history where the Wunderlich brothers’ factory once produced the iconic Sydney red terracotta roof tiles and ornate pressed metal ceilings ceiling tiles in Sydney Town Hall between 1890 and 1972.
