Being a disability awareness advocate: Woman shares bond with blind son on social media, Lifestyle News

Nothing can fully prepare one for parenthood.

First-time parents often understand that they should brace themselves for the challenges, expected or otherwise, that come with welcoming a new member to the family.

But when you find out that your baby is blind, what happens then?

This was the reality of Singaporean couple Koh Wei Shi, 34, and Eric Koh, 35, in 2020, when their son, Elliot, was born.

It took them a while before they realised something was amiss.

Wei Shi recalled how Elliot showed signs of “developmental delays” during his first few months.

The first-time mum shared in a chat with AsiaOne: “We knew that he’s probably behind others his age but we just thought that different children would develop at a different pace.”

    ‘We were lost and shocked’

Back then, Covid-19 was at its peak so country-wide restrictions and preventive measures kept social interactions to a minimum.

This actually played a role in delaying Elliot’s diagnosis as his parents did not get a lot of opportunities for him to “meet people”.

Once Covid-19 measures were lifted, a visit to a friend’s house helped Wei Shi notice how “behind” Elliot was in his development.

The contrast when Elliot was sat alongside another baby of the same age was stark.

Her son was neither flipping (rolling over) nor lifting his head, so this prompted a visit to the paediatrician.

After getting a referral to an ophthalmologist, an eye care specialist, the couple’s worst fears were realised.

While they suspected that their son might be going through “some developmental delays”, they did not expect to learn that he was blind and unlikely to ever gain sight.

“We were both lost and shocked,” she recalled.

Wei Shi acknowledged that, due to his visual impairment, Elliot’s life experiences were bound to differ significantly from her own and her husband’s.

She also wondered if her son’s condition might limit his ability to experience everyday activities, whether it was a trip to the playground, socialising with friends or even going to school.

She said: “I remember us looking at him sleeping and then just crying because we could not understand why this was happening to him.”

    Growing up blind

Reality sank in for Wei Shi and her husband when a doctor suggested they read a developmental guide for parents of babies with severely impaired sight, Show Me What My Friends Can See.

Upon reading the book, Wei Shi understood that the next step was not about attempting to correct Elliot’s sight.

Instead, they had to focus on how to best raise him as someone who cannot see.

Four years on and Wei Shi’s description of her parenting journey is short and simple: Fulfilling.

“Every day I’m learning and it has taught me to be a more empathetic and compassionate person,” she said.

It’s a journey Wei Shi has shared with her husband, Eric, and along the way, the couple discovered their strengths in parenting.

She’s often guiding Elliot with his schoolwork, while Eric would be on hand to plan and prepare for a family day out.

They focus on playing to their strengths while supporting each other when needed.

“If I do need his help, I will just have to voice out and he will come,” Wei Shi explained.

    [[nid:618095]]

When asked about her son’s personality, Wei Shi broke into a smile and mentioned how outgoing and chatty Elliot is.

His sense of humour has a tendency to amuse his peers and adults alike.

Wei Shi is aware, however, that Elliot may not always have such a positive impact on everyone he meets.

In fact, his lack of sight will likely lead to him having to deal with prejudice and discrimination as he grows up.

For now, people are generally understanding when they find out that Elliot is blind, Wei Shi said.

It’s a situation she has experienced numerous times when out and about with her son.

A stranger’s immediate reaction tends to be one of shock.

“Then you can see sadness [on their faces],” Wei Shi reflected, before saying: “I don’t actually know if it is sadness or compassion. They probably just pity him.”

How does it make her feel? We ask.

She admitted that, initially, dealing with such situations was tough and was a reminder that her son was seen as different.

Eventually, Wei Shi got used to such interactions and understood that people may not be behaving or reacting this way on purpose.

Nowadays, she views these situations as opportunities to raise awareness that blindness need not be looked down on or perceived as a disadvantage.

“Instead of letting my emotions take over, I will take the chance to advocate for him and explain to [people] that he’s okay. It’s a chance for people to learn,” she said.

Through such exchanges, Wei Shi hopes that it creates an effect where more people will begin to have a more positive outlook on blind individuals.

    Building an online community

Creating a social media account to document the life of her young child was not something Wei Shi thought she would do but Elliot’s diagnosis shifted her perspective.

She struggled to find information on raising blind children in Singapore and had to reach out to resources overseas instead.

“I started to chat with some of them and they were really supportive. It was a nice community that was very open to sharing,” Wei Shi recalled.

Learning about how well these blind children were doing was inspiring, and it gave Wei Shi hope that Elliot’s development would progress in due time.

That’s when she decided to be a beacon of hope to others in Singapore, by starting the social media account Blindandshine, where she documents Elliot’s life journey.

“If a baby gets diagnosed with the same condition, [the] parents can have somebody to reach out to. That was the initial intention [of the account],” she said.

As of the time of writing, Blindandshine has more than 7,500 followers on Instagram and over 6,000 followers on TikTok.

Scrolling through both accounts, one would find content documenting Elliot’s daily life — from his Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes to family outings.

Unsurprisingly, curiosity about her son’s condition has prompted questions from people online, but Wei Shi has no qualms engaging with them in order to address common misconceptions on blindness.

“I think people come from a place of sympathy, and they just mean well for the child and family,” she said.

Generally, their social media content has been positively received by viewers, and what’s most heartening is the response by some.

Whether it’s a parent showing their video to their child, or an educator sharing it with a class, Wei Shi is thankful for the conscious effort in raising awareness on the cause.

“I think that means my message is not just reaching a particular group of people, the people have become advocates themselves,” she added.

Super Micro’s shares jump after server maker says review finds no evidence of misconduct

NEW YORK — Just over a month after Ernst & Young resigned as its public accounting firm, Super Micro Computer says a review committee has found no evidence of fraud or misconduct among the server maker’s leadership.

Super Micro is also searching for a new chief financial officer and appointing other executives per recommendations from the committee, which began its review several months ago — after EY communicated concerns over issues like transparency, internal control related to financial reporting and integrity of management while conducting its first audit for the company.

Additional information that emerged during this review eventually led EY to resign as Super Micro’s public accountant in October. Super Micro, which disagreed with EY’s decision, later appointed BDO as its new independent auditor last month.

Super Micro announced that the committee, formed by the board as well as external counsel, completed its review on Monday. The company said that the conclusions EY laid out in its resignation “were not supported by the facts” found in this probe — maintaining that there was no evidence of misconduct.

As a result, Super Micro does not expect past financial reports to be restated. Shares for Super Micro climbed over 20% Monday morning.

Beyond the findings of this review, Super Micro also laid out plans to appoint new leadership, which it says follow recommendations from the committee. Super Micro disclosed that it has begun looking for a new CFO, with David Weigand continuing in the role until the board names a successor. The company also said it would be “accelerating its search” for a chief compliance officer and for a general counsel.

In addition, Super Micro announced it has appointed Kenneth Cheung, current vice president of finance and corporate controller, as chief accounting officer.

It’s been a tumultuous year for Super Micro — and EY’s resignation wasn’t the first time its accounting practices have come into question. Back in August, short-selling firm Hindenburg Research released a report alleging ample accounting manipulation at the company, pointing to “glaring accounting red flags” and evidence of undisclosed transactions. It also accused Super Micro of rehiring top executives that were directly involved in a 2018 scandal. At the time, Super Micro said it would not comment “on rumors and speculation.”

Following these accusations, The Wall Street Journal and others reported that the Justice Department was beginning a probe into Super Micro, citing people familiar with the matter.

Super Micro has been among tech companies recently riding a the artificial intelligence wave. In August, Super Micro reported fourth-quarter revenue of $5.31 billion, a more than 143% increase over the $2.18 billion it reported in the same quarter of 2023.

Geneva’s Lee shares boys soccer county coach of the year award | Sports

    sports@starbeacon.com

First-year Geneva boys soccer coach Jamie Lee was pleased that his team showed a big improvement this fall.

The Eagles finished the season with a 7-11-2 record including winning in the first round of the postseason tournament.

Geneva improved from two wins the previous season and finished second in the Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division with a 3-1 record.

Lee was rewarded for his efforts by being named the 2024 Ashtabula County Co-Coach of the Year, as voted on the coaches, with Grand Valley’s Rick Huffman.

Lee was happy, even though his fellow county coaches weren’t familar with him very well, they saw the difference he had helped make in the Eagles’ soccer program.

“A lot of the guys don’t know me from anybody, so to be nominated and then voted upon, it was super awesome, a super awesome feeling, to know that they noticed the difference that we made this year as far as the team goes,” Lee said.

“We were much more of a cohesive unit this year and the kids were in better spirits and overall just played better, so that fact that people noticed that means a lot to me.”

Lee said one of his team’s highlights was a battle against Kirtland, which ended in a 1-1 tie, after the Hornets pretty much had their way with the Eagles the previous season.

“It was a very tough battle that I wanted to do well in and we showed them that we really improved and basically we didn’t let them push us around and I was very proud of that,” Lee said.

He said junior Paxton Galliazzo led the team in points scored, and his goalkeeper, senior Kyle Hejduk, had 136 saves, with more than 300 for his career.

The Eagles had a roster of 18 players, including five seniors and four juniors, four sophomores, and five freshmen.

Geneva is expected to have a large number of returners next season.

Lee has been a club soccer coach for at least five years, so transitioning to coaching high school players was a bit different.

In club soccer, he said, the idea was to keep pushing forward as often as possible to try to get scoring opportunities.

With the high school team, patience to maintain possession of the ball was the key strategy because of how the team was constructed and players’ skills.

“Most of my team were all travel kids,” Lee said. “So getting them to switch that mindset from ‘hey let’s move the ball downfield, up the field’ to we need to hold the ball and maintain possession.”

He said it took some time to establish that mindset, but the resulting patience allowed his players more time to think and make a better path and smarter decisions.

“We didn’t do well against high-pressure teams, so when we would get challenged it would turn into a 50/50 and we would lose the ball,” Lee said.

“They got better as the season progressed and by the end, we were definitely playing much more patient ball, much better, smarter soccer,” Lee said. “It was definitely a progression.”

Lifestyle Coach Shares Life-Saving Tips To Identify Stroke Symptoms Quickly

Lifestyle Coach Shares Life-Saving Tips To Identify Stroke Symptoms Quickly

“A stroke can kill you or your loved one. It can lead to full or partial paralysis,” Luke Coutinho

A stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, yet many people fail to recognise its warning signs on time. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 15 million people suffer a stroke annually. Of these, 5 million die, while another 5 million are left permanently paralysed. Lifestyle guru and author Luke Coutinho has recently highlighted this critical issue on Instagram, sharing practical advice on how anyone, regardless of medical training, can recognise the symptoms of a stroke and provide timely assistance.

“A stroke can kill you or your loved one. It can lead to full or partial paralysis,” Luke Coutinho stressed in his video uploaded to Instagram. “Save a life without being a doctor. How to identify a possible stroke that may kill or paralyse someone.”

Citing medical insights, he has warned that during a stroke, every passing minute kills about two million brain cells. Acting fast is not just important; it’s life-saving.

    The BE FAST Method

To help people identify stroke symptoms effectively, Luke Coutinho has introduced the BE FAST method:

    • B – Balance: Check their balance. Are they tripping, dizzy, or walking unsteadily?
    • E – Eyes: Observe their vision. Are their pupils dilated, or is their vision impaired?
    • F – Face: Look at their face. Is it drooping on one side? Is their smile uneven?
    • A – Arms: Ask them to lift both arms. Often, someone having a stroke will struggle to do so.
    • S – Speech: Get them to speak. Is their speech slurred, or are they unable to speak clearly?
    • T – Time: Act quickly. Getting them to a hospital immediately is vital for survival and recovery.

A stroke is a serious medical emergency. The faster someone receives medical attention, the greater their chances of recovery and survival. Early intervention can minimise damage, prevent long-term disabilities, and even save lives. By learning and sharing Luke Coutinho’s simple steps, anyone can be a first responder in critical moments.

As Luke Coutinho has aptly put, “BE FAST, and you can save someone’s life.”

  • How To Protect Your Kidney When On Painkillers? Nutritionist Luke Coutinho Shares How

How To Protect Your Kidney When On Painkillers? Nutritionist Luke Coutinho Shares How

Many people frequently pop painkillers or over-the-counter medicines when having a headache or any kind of body ache. In some cases, you might be sick and would need to consume a dose of doctor-prescribed painkillers. In any case, it is important to note that consuming painkillers may come with certain side effects, which may negatively impact your kidneys. In a recent Instagram video, integrative lifestyle expert Luke Coutinho explains that chronic overuse of painkillers can lead to kidney failure or chronic kidney disease.

“The kidney produces a chemical called prostaglandins which is used to protect the kidney. It is also a hormone that helps you with blood clotting and several other functions. As you use more and more painkillers, these prostaglandins start to reduce and that reduces the protective mechanism of your kidneys, leading to kidney disease,” he explains in the video.

Also Read: Why Is Chewing Food Thoroughly So Important For Digestion?

If you need to be on a painkiller because of any pain or treatment you are going through, there are certain things you can do to manage the side effects, as shared by Luke Coutinho.

Here Are 7 Diet And Lifestyle Changes To Follow While Taking Painkillers:

    1. Increase Your Water Intake

When you are on painkillers, increasing your water intake can help protect your kidneys. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, unless you have been put on a water restriction by a doctor.

    2. Increase Calcium And Vitamins Intake

Most painkillers will deplete calcium, magnesium and vitamin D from your body, shares the expert. It is important to get those essential nutrients back into your diet through supplements or food, based on your doctor’s advice.

    3. No Smoking Or Drinking Alcohol

It is important to stop smoking and drinking alcohol, especially when you are on painkillers, as this can worsen the side effects.

    4. Eat Nuts And Veggies

Consume a diet rich in vegetables, especially green leafy veggies. Eat lots of nuts because the healthy fats will also help protect your kidneys when you are on painkillers.

    5. Moderate Protein Intake

Make sure you are eating protein-rich foods. However, it is best to consume a moderate amount of protein and not too much, explains Coutinho. Too much protein may put a load on the kidneys. Continue with moderate protein intake when you are continuously on painkillers.

    6. Get Adequate Sleep

Sleep is essential for recovery from your illness as well as kidney protection. Make sure you are sleeping deeply because it is when we sleep that the body goes through its natural repair and detoxification protocols.

    7. Manage Stress

Avoid taking stress and try to calm down. If you are feeling stressed, try to relax your mind and body. Your overall relaxation takes the burden off all of your vital organs.

If you need to be on painkillers, make sure you are eating the right foods and making the right lifestyle changes. Do not misuse painkillers and always take these as per your doctor’s prescription and direction.

Sir Elton John has revealed the details of his new diet after a series of health scares left him unable to eat many of the things he’s enjoyed in life.

In September the star said he had been left with “limited vision” after a severe eye infection, and last month the “Tiny Dancer” singer said “there’s not much of me left” after having his prostate, appendix, adenoids and tonsils removed.

He provided an update on his health and lifestyle changes in a new interview alongside his husband David Fisher for Ruthie’s Table podcast.

“I can have an apple, I can eat a bit of melon,” he shared. “As long as you’re sensible about it, it doesn’t shoot your blood sugar up. But what I crave is chocolate and ice cream, I can’t have any ice cream.”

He then revealed the menu of longed-for items he would design for his last ever meal.

“If I had a death row meal, it wouldn’t contain anything except sweets, because I can’t eat them now,” he said revealing, his sweet tooth. “So, I’d have ice cream, doughnuts, apple pie, rhubarb crumble.”

Last month he shared the effects of a severe eye infection as he wrote in a statement, “Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye. I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”

The music icon retired from touring last summer but said recently he had found happiness in the decision.

“As you know, I decided to stop touring because I’m 77 years of age. I’ve done all there is to do, to play. I’ve succeeded, I’ve been there and I’ve done it,” he said.

“I’ve still got to make room because I’m still going to have music in my life.

“But the most important thing in my life are David, Zachary and Elijah and my family and my friends. I found utopia, and I’m so thrilled.”Elton John: Never Too Late is set to arrive on Disney+ on December 13.

Directed by Furnish and JR Cutler, the movie features never-before-seen concert footage of John over the past 50 years, as well as hand-written diary entries and present-day footage of him and his family.
