Potential changes to Match of the Day, along with the race to replace Gary Lineker, remain the talk of the BBC.

Insiders believe that one move being considered is to introduce a segment to the highlights show of news from behind the scenes, which would see a journalist brought in to give some off-the-field detail.

The appearance of Roman Kemp on Radio 5 Live, on which he recently hosted the 606 phone-in with Robbie Savage, has also set tongues wagging.

With Chris Sutton covering Celtic’s late clash at Hearts, the 31-year-old stepped in to co-host. Kemp, son of Spandau Ballet star Martin, performed well after a nervous start and is known to have admirers in high places.

Whether the BBC’s new director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski would give him Lineker’s shoes to fill, however, remains to be seen.

    Padel’s at the wheel

While the eyes of the Formula One world were on the track for this weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix, many of the drivers had already taken part in a keenly contested competition elsewhere.

The padel court at Doha’s Waldorf Astoria threw its doors open to drivers and sports figures from across the world in the days building up to the big race.

Insiders say British pair George Russell and Lando Norris were among those to catch the eye while Novak Djokovic took on Premier Padel (and Paris Saint-Germain) chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

    Wales to tackle the FA

The attempt by Welsh clubs playing in the English league to qualify for Europe by entering the Welsh League Cup will now go before the full FA Board, rather than just a sub-committee.

In what would appear to be a blow for those wanting to ‘have their Welsh cake and eat it’, as one English exec quipped, EFL clubs have been told that the decision has been made ‘due to the importance and significance of the topic’.

Clubs have also been assured that they will be given the opportunity to respond as part of the consultation process.

    Ignorance is Faes

Not all of Leicester City’s footballers were out partying while manager Steve Cooper was getting sacked. A group including Conor Coady and Harry Winks were spotted in a Copenhagen nightclub, close to a sign which read ‘Enzo I Miss U’, which many interpreted as a dig at Enzo Maresca’s replacement, hours after the defeat by Chelsea which saw Cooper punted despite his side not being in the relegation zone.

However, with the squad not expected back in until Tuesday, centre-back Wout Faes was spotted in the more tranquil surroundings of Cliveden House in Buckinghamshire. Indeed, as club bosses were harshly deciding that Cooper was out of his depth, Faes was relaxing in the spa’s swimming pool.

    The Gretsy Lights

Christmas lights of a different variety have arrived at Crewe Alexandra courtesy of Cheshire Police, rather than Santa Claus.

Officers arrived at Gresty Road last week armed with LED grow lights, which they had seized following a raid at a cannabis factory.

Arsenal sporting director Edu is to leave in a huge blow for the Gunners, set to join Evangelos Marinakis’ group of clubs which includes Nottingham Forest.

The Brazilian rejoined the club he used to play for from 2001-05 in 2019 as technical director and stepped up to sporting director in November 2022.

The 46-year-old has been credited with securing big signings of players such as Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, while his connections in his home country helped snap up the previously unknown Gabriel Martinelli.

The Daily Mail report that talks have been held between Edu and the Arsenal hierarchy but the Brazilian has decided to move on.

The Independent have since reported that he is making a surprise move to link up with the Marinakis network of Forest, Oympiacos and Rio Ave.

The unexpected move is reportedly driven by Edu wanting to become CEO at Arsenal and being offered that position at the Marinakis-owned group.

Edu was alongside Mikel Arteta in September as the Spaniard signed a new contract with the club and spoke about the long-term future under the manager.

‘We are really happy that Mikel has signed a new long-term contract,’ said the Brazilian.

‘It’s a very positive and proud moment for everyone at the club and an important part of what we’re all working towards.

‘Mikel has shown his qualities since the very first day he joined us, not only as a football manager, but as a person with wonderful values.

‘It’s a very positive and proud moment for everyone at the club and an important part of what we’re all working towards.

‘Mikel has shown his qualities since the very first day he joined us, not only as a football manager, but as a person with wonderful values.’

Edu spoke over the summer with Men In Blazers about his strategy and how he has had to make ‘unpopular decisions’ to achieve success.

‘When you live in the football world, sometimes you have to make decisions simple and sometimes you have to make decisions even if it is not popular,’ he said.

Mikel Arteta and Edu appear to have enjoyed a close working relationship (Picture: Getty Images)

‘You have to be very strong on your ideas, what you believe, what is good for the club, what is good for the future of the club.

‘For me, there are some elements in football which I will always give a lot of attention. When I joined, I looked at the squad balance, the positions, the age of the group. There are three elements that you have to be really aware of.

‘First of all, we have to see the age of the player. Then you have to see the salary of the player. And third you have to see the performance of the player.

‘If you have a player over 26 or 27 years, you need attention. If his salary is high, you need attention. And if he is not performing, you are dead.

‘Let’s come back… If you have a player, 27 years old or 28, on a big salary, but he is performing, you can accept it. What you cannot accept is if you have those three elements and the player is over 28.

‘You start to become uncomfortable and it is better for you to move them on – because maybe this player is blocking someone younger, an asset who could help you.

Edu won two Premier League titles with Arsenal as a player (Picture: Getty Images)

‘When I came to Arsenal, I saw all the squad, with respect, almost everyone was over 26, 27, on big salaries and not performing. If you have those three elements, which club in the world wants to come here and buy one of our players? No-one.

‘So how do you deal with that situation? You have to be strong and sometimes you have to make decisions. You can go strong and try to let those players go or your project is going to take, instead of three or four years, maybe seven, eight or nine.

‘Then unpopular decisions started to come. Because most of the players that have those elements, they have a fanbase and a media that love them. But for the club it is not healthy sometimes to keep the player in that situation.

‘When I started I saw every single player in the squad with those three characteristics. Then I said: “Guys, we have to clean this squad, with all my respect, to build a new foundation here. From that foundation, we need to sign younger players, on lower salaries, with better futures, who are hungry to take us where we want to go.’

  • Arsenal handed shock blow as Edu prepares to quit sporting director role | Arsenal

The Arsenal sporting director, Edu, is to leave the club and looks likely to join the network of clubs spearheaded by Evangelos Marinakis, the owner of Nottingham Forest.

Edu’s shock departure will bring to an end five years in Arsenal’s senior management and means Mikel Arteta will lose one of his major allies. The pair enjoy a strong relationship and Arsenal will need too recalibrate when the Brazilian moves on. The timescale of his departure remains unclear.

Arsenal have become title challengers since their former midfielder rejoined the club, initially as technical director, in July 2019. He was heavily involved in Arteta’s arrival five months later and grew in influence after Raul Sanllehi, their head of football, departed in August 2020. Despite hits and misses early in his tenure, Edu has become regarded as integral to an aggressive, effective transfer policy that saw the likes of Martin Ødegaard, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhães, Gabriel Jesus and Declan Rice arrive to transform the profile of Arsenal’s squad.

There have been frustrations in more recent windows – the lack of genuine backups to Ødegaard or Bukayo Saka and an ongoing uncertainty over their centre-forward position the primary issues – although there is no indication that this is responsible for Edu’s imminent departure. His bonds with key members of Arsenal’s hierarchy are understood to extend beyond the friendship with Arteta. Arsenal are fifth in the Premier League after a patchy, injury-struck start to the season in which they have rarely recaptured their free-flowing best form of the Arteta era.

Now Edu is being lined up to take a senior role in Marinakis’ group, potentially in a position involving recruitment oversight. Forest, Olympiacos and the Portuguese side Rio Ave are the three clubs currently under the 57-year-old’s control.

Edu was director of football at Corinthians after ending his playing career and, before returning to Arsenal, had been team coordinator for Brazil’s national team. The 46-year-old’s lack of experience at the sharp end of European football administration had appeared a concern at the outset but he is now poised for a new challenge working for the ambitious and controversial Marinakis, whose Forest team have been the season’s surprise package and currently sit third in the top flight.

Keith Urban’s surprising response when asked to reprise his mentor role on The Voice Australia following Guy Sebastian’s shock exit

Keith Urban could be heading back to the The Voice in 2025 after Guy Sebastian quit the show last week.

The 57-year-old country superstar last took his place in the big red chair as coach two years ago.

And reports have now surfaced that Urban is open to return to the singing competition.

‘When asked about returning Keith didn’t say no,’ an insider told Yahoo Lifestyle last month.

The source added that Urban said he missed being in Australia and coaching on the show.

He also said that the star and his wife, Nicole Kidman, wanted to spend more time Down Under.

They continued: ‘There is also a big tour for Keith in Australia next year and if they can all be back here in the country when filming gets underway Keith might make his 4th return to the singing competition.’

The fan favourite is scheduled to bring his High and Alive Tour Down Under in August.

He first appeared coach on The Voice in 2012 and returned in 2021, before leaving the show in 2022.

It comes after The Voice Australia appears set to have a major cast shake up after Guy Sebastian’s shock exit from the singing competition last week.

And an insider has claimed the network is attempting to lure former fan favourites besides Urban back as coaches.

‘The line-up that Channel Seven wants is Keith Urban, Jessica Mauboy, Ronan Keating and LeAnn Rimes,’ a source told Yahoo Lifestyle on Saturday.

‘Keith was asked about returning when he recorded a performance for the grand finale and he sounded open to the idea,’ the insider said.

The source also confirmed that US singer Rimes, 42, is likely to return in 2025.

‘In the lead-up to this year’s finale, LeAnn’s management kept talking about the next series and what she plans to do differently,’ the insider added.

‘LeAnn was clear about her ambition to return next year and Channel Seven are keen to have her back after her artist won.’

They also said that fans shouldn’t expect to see Kate back since she appeared ‘a little out of place’ on the show.

Meanwhile, Ronan Keating, 47, was last seen on for The Voice Australia back in 2016, and has appeared as a judge for the series in the UK and Germany.

The source said the former Boyzone singer was very keen to appear on the Australian version of the show again.

Sebastian, meanwhile, sensationally quit The Voice Australia on Wednesday after six seasons.

The Australian Idol winner shared the announcement to Instagram.

‘I am busy planning shows in Australia and worldwide and I am really looking forward to getting out and connecting with you all there,’ he said in the lengthy statement.

He began by congratulating the show’s current winner Reuben De Melo, before detailing how he came to his dramatic decision.

‘I have some news to share with you all regarding my role as a Voice coach,’ he began.

‘I have made the decision to take a break from the best red chair on the planet.

‘It’s been six amazing years as a coach and it’s honestly been the best gig ever! I have nothing but good things to say about the show itself, & sharing the panel with such amazing coaches has been a pleasure.’

The Angels Brought Me Here singer concluded with chatter about his upcoming album, which he’s poured his heart and soul into over the last four years, before ending with a warning.

‘Whoever has the audacity to take my chair, don’t get too comfortable… I will wrestle for it back with zero dignity when I’m ready to return,’ he wrote.

Channel Seven was quick to offer their well wishes.

‘Guy has been a powerhouse coach for The Voice on Seven. His mentorship and command of artistry has been inspirational to our Voice artists and viewers alike, as well as the production team and all at Seven,’ commented Seven Network Chief Content Officer, Brook Hall.

Men’s Ice Hockey: The Huskies shock No. 15 UMass with a win and a tie in their two-game slate

After a tying with No. 15 UMass Amherst in the first game of their weekend series, the UConn men’s ice hockey team battled for a game two victory to edge out the weekend advantage.

The weekend was split between both team’s home venues, with game one being played at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass., while game two took place at Tuscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. Prior to this series, the Huskies had not defeated the Minutemen since January of 2023. UMass boasted a 10-16-3 record over UConn coming into the weekend.

UMass immediately erased the deficit, scoring a goal just 40 seconds into the period. Second-year Jack Musa snagged a UConn pass out of the air, before sliding a pass to third-year Cole O’Hara who buried the Minutemen’s second goal. UMass nearly took the lead in the same period, but due to a goalie interference, it was overturned. UConn ended the second on top when third-year forward Tristan Frasier had his shot deflected, before third-year Ryan Tattle shoveled the rebound past the goalie to take a 3-2 lead.

In a grueling third period, the Huskies kept the Minutemen at bay as neither team was able to gain an offensive advantage. UMass pulled their goalie in a last-ditch effort, and as the clock wound down, second-year Ayden Suniev tied the game and forced overtime.

The overtime period was reminiscent of period three, a back-and-forth affair where neither team could establish an upper hand. The overtime was highlighted by a diving save by third-year goalie Tyler Muszelik to keep both teams locked in a stalemate, resulting in a 3-3 final score.

As the clock struck zero, the Hockey East standings advantage would be decided in a sudden death shootout. In the eighth round, fourth-year Lucas Mercuri converted on his attempt to award the Minutemen the extra point towards the conference standings.

On Saturday, UConn once again took the first lead in the contest. The Huskies sent out their penalty kill unit to repel the UMass power play. Third-year Jake Percival managed to sneak away with the puck, getting a one-on-one chance with the keeper where he knocked in the shorthanded goal with 12 seconds left on the power play clock. Muszelik kept the Huskies on top, making a staggering 11 saves in the first period.

The Huskies played hard this weekend and despite losing against Mass in their first game this weekend won in the second one. Photo by Emma Meidinger/The Daily Campus

The Huskies continued their dominance into the second period. As the Huskies controlled the puck in the offensive zone for over a minute, Percival was able to net his second goal of the game, stuffing the shot past the goalie to give UConn a 2-0 advantage. As the period continued, UConn scored their third unanswered goal with less than five minutes to play in the second. Second-year Joey Muldowney flicked a pass backwards to Richard, who ripped the puck to the far side of the goal, where Muldowney was able to tap in his first goal of the weekend. UMass finally managed to get on the board at the end of the period, as fifth-year Linden Alger scored after a faceoff win, to make the game 3-1 going into the final period.

UConn’s penalty kill unit was put to work in the third period as the Huskies committed three penalties. With five minutes to go in the game, the Minutemen capitalized on their man advantage, bringing the game within one as Musa scored on an assist from second-year Dans Locmelis. UConn’s defensive line was able to hold off UMass for the remainder of the game, to secure the 3-2 upset victory.

The Minutemen narrowly outshot the Huskies 29-28, but a stellar performance by Muszelik in goal helped UConn hold on to their lead. The New Hampshire transfer made 27 saves in the game to propel UConn to the win.

UConn will defend its home ice next weekend as they welcome The University of Vermont to both the XL Center and Tuscano Family Ice Forum in a two-game set, the puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Aussie sporting great Michele Timms reveals the incredible reason she got a HUGE shock when she met Hollywood superstar Bill Murray

She is one of Australia’s all-time basketball greats and now Opals star Michele Timms has become just the third Aussie to be honoured in the sport’s Hall of Fame – where she received a massive surprise from Hollywood icon Bill Murray.

Timms made 264 appearances for the Australian national team, winning a silver medal at the Sydney Olympics, and was named in the 1999 WNBA All-Stars team with the Phoenix Mercury. She is also a WNBL championship-winning coach.

The Melbourne-born point guard became just the third Australian to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on the weekend, joining champion coach Lindsay Gaze and Lauren Jackson.

Some of the biggest names to ever take to the hardwood were present at the gala presentation in Springfield, Massachusetts, including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

But it was one Hollywood star that gave Timms the biggest shock on the night, with Bill Murray walking up to her to shake her hand.

Not only did the star of hit films including Ghostbusters, Caddyshack and Space Jam know who Timms was, he had watched her play for the Phoenix and had glowing words for the Australian star.

‘Incredible being in the room with Jordan, Bird, Johnston, but the one who I was super excited about was getting a pic with Bill Murray – who told me he used to love watching me play and then went into a spiel about the way I played,’ a shocked Timms said.

He has been seen cheering for UConn during their NCAA Tournament games, despite originally being an Illinois Fighting Illini fan.

He assists the Tune Squad during the climactic basketball game by joining as a player, ultimately helping them secure victory against the Monstars.

But she made special mention of the late Betty Watson, the name on the medal for the best Australian women’s basketballer each year, for creating the platform for all Aussie women who wanted to hoop.

‘I’m Australian Opal’s basketballer #56 and this honour is dedicated to all those women who paved the way for me and so many others to wear the green and gold for our country,’ she said.

‘To Betty Watson, the godmother of Australian women’s basketball, Betty didn’t have any daughters but when the call came from FIBA in 1954 to start women’s basketball in Australia, she took up the challenge.

‘She fought bureaucracy and a male-dominated landscape to ensure an Australian team would compete at its first-ever World Championships in 1957.

‘To the eight brave women who took the five-month voyage by boat to compete at that World Championship, I am forever grateful for your courage and sacrifices.

‘That was to be the first chapter of Australian women’s basketball.’

‘Congratulations Timmsy you have been the best role model for basketball, you so deserve this,’ added another.

She shot to fame in 2007 after appearing on Big Brother and leaving a trail of controversy in her wake. Now 17 years later, you may struggle to recognise her.

Emily Valentine, who was known as Emily Parr on the hit UK show, made her TV debut when she was a 19-year-old drama student from Bristol. Now 36, she’s swapped her life of reality TV for a life of social media fame.

With over 50,000 followers on Instagram alone, Emily has built up a lifestyle-focused community, with her posts covering style, wellbeing, and entrepreneurial trends.

But while her perfectly curated feed is impressive, it’s her new look proving just how far she has come since her days on the show.

When appearing on Big Brother, Emily was no stranger to a casual yet eye-catching look. Some of her most memorable outfits included a blue shirt and skinny jeans combo and an unmissable yellow bodycon dress.

As for her hair and makeup, the then-cigarette smoker usually wore her blonde hair in a messy bun on top of her head, while her makeup stayed natural and minimal.

In recent years the social media influencer has adopted a clean-cut aesthetic.

A quick look at Emily’s Instagram page paints an unrecognisable picture from her earlier years, with pictures including a slicked-back bun and clean-girl makeup look.

One of her recent videos even includes a caption about her love for an ‘old money, long bob’ style for her hair, admitting that the ‘hair cut giving me life once again’.

Her social media posts also revealed the star is getting married soon, with much of her content focusing on bridal make-up, bachelorette outfit inspiration and a list of bridal beauty products she recommends.

Emily starred in the eighth season of Big Brother, which was won by Brian Belo, and became a favourite of some fans until her stint came to a swift end after she spoke to her roomie, Charley Uchea, in the garden and made a racist comment.

The team of the then-Channel 4, now ITV-produced show, quickly removed Emily from the Big Brother house in the early hours of the morning, and her exit prompted the teen to offer a heartfelt apology.

‘There’s no amount of words that can cover how sorry and how stupid I’ve been,’ she said in a statement at the time.

‘But we’ve all got to move on now, and all I ask from anyone reading this is that they understand what really happened and accept my apology.’

She also spoke with OK! magazine in 2021 about the incident, admitting it is a period in her life she ‘tries not to revisit’.

‘The media noise and intrusion was bad, but what was worse and lasted for a while was the deep shame I felt about what I had said.

‘The only way I’ve found I could move forward from my mistake was to educate myself and develop a much better understanding of what these racial slurs mean and why they are so awful.

‘As well as having a better understanding of racism and how it manifests in our society today.’

Raphael Varane announces his shock retirement from football, aged just 31 – after the former Man United and Real Madrid star suffered a serious knee injury on his Como debut last month

Former Manchester United, Real Madrid and France star Raphael Varane has  announced his retirement from football.

Varane, 31, has struggled to stay fit in recent years and suffered a serious knee injury just 20 minutes into his debut for Como last month.

Varane was subsequently left out of Como’s Serie A squad given he’s expected to be sidelined for an extended period of time.

As a result, Le Parisien had previously reported that the 31-year-old was considering a shock retirement.

And now, Varane has called time on his glittering career, revealing the decision via a post on his Instagram account on Wednesday morning.

Alongside a series of photos from his career, Varane wrote in a statement: ‘They say all good things must come to an end.

‘In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.

‘I hold myself to the highest standard, I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct. Desire and needs are two different things. I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley.

‘I have loved fighting for myself, my clubs, my country, my teammates and the supporters of every team I have played for. From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and playing for our national team. I have defended every badge with everything I have, and loved every minute of the journey. The game at the highest level is a thrilling experience. It tests every level of your body and your mind. The emotions we experience you cannot find anywhere else. As athletes, we are never satisfied, never accepting of success. It is our nature and what fuels us.

‘I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that no matter what, I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it. I hope I have made you all proud.

‘And so, a new life begins off the pitch. I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon.

‘For now, to the supporters of every club I played for, to my teammates, coaches and staff… from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this journey more special than my wildest dreams could ever foresee.

‘Thank you, football. With love, Rapha.’

Several of Varane’s former team-mates and clubs were quick to pay tribute to the Frenchman, while the France national team also passed on their well-wishes.

Posting on X, they said: ‘Damn dust in the eye. Thanks for the work Raph. We all wish you a good retirement. #ProudtobeBlue.’

The World Cup winner had joined Como  as a free agent over the summer after his contract with Manchester United expired at the end of last season.

He made the move to Italy on a two-year deal – where he linked up with Cesc Fabregas’ side – and joined fellow former Premier League stars Pepe Reina and Alberto Moreno in Como’s squad.

But now, Varane has terminated his contract with the Serie A outfit as he prepares for the next chapter of his life.

Varane, who came through the youth ranks at Lens, played at the top level for 14 years.

After one season in the first team with the Ligue 1 side, the central defender joined Real Madrid in 2011 aged 18.

He went on to make 360 appearances for the Spanish giants, winning three La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and a Copa del Rey, among several other trophies over a decade.

The Frenchman moved to United in 2021 and displayed his quality despite being hampered by injuries during his three years at Old Trafford, racking up 95 appearances for the Red Devils.

His last game in a United shirt saw him lift the FA Cup as he started the 2-1 victory over Man City at Wembley in May, while he also won the Carabao Cup with the club.

Varane also shone for France in their 2018 World Cup triumph, with the defender racking up 93 caps in total for Les Bleus before he retired from international duty at the age of 29 in February 2023.
