A video recently went viral, posted by a food vlogger, showing the fascinating process behind the preparation of this delicious meal at the 60-year-old establishment.     In another part of the kitchen, a worker is seen mixing dough in a massive container. The dough is so abundant that it stocks up to his elbows as he kneads it with his bare hands. The dough is then divided into small balls and lined up neatly on trays. The next step sees these dough balls rolled out and deep-fried to perfection, creating soft, pillowy bhatures that are golden brown on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

    Aside from wondering which car to buy, used-EV shoppers might be wondering whether the battery could die. Shoppers on a budget might also be looking for more ways to save money, as EV tax credits broadened to include used electric cars in January 2023.

    The research can be a lot to take on at once. We talked to car-buying experts to demystify the process.

    Scott Case, the cofounder and CEO of Recurrent, a startup that tracks EV battery health, recommended starting by considering how far you typically drive and the climate you live in — those factors will affect how much range you’ll want, as EVs perform best in temperate weather and can’t drive quite as far in cold temperatures.

    “Let’s say you live in Florida and you drive 30 to 50 miles every day — you can pretty much buy anything,” Case said. On the other hand, people who travel 150 miles daily and live in the occasionally frigid Midwest would need to shop around for a long-range vehicle.

    Battery range will degrade over time

    Anyone who’s owned a smartphone knows that lithium-ion batteries wear out over time. Pretty much the same goes for EVs.

    As the years go by, cycles of charging and driving wear out an EV’s battery pack, reducing driving range. The vehicle-data firm Geotab has estimated that EV batteries tend to lose about 2% of their capacity each year.

    The good news is that an EV’s battery is unlikely to fail completely or render the car useless.

    But understanding how much life a vehicle has left isn’t all that simple. Case said that exposure to extreme temperatures, frequent trips to powerful DC fast chargers, and variations in battery chemistry mean some used cars perform better than others with identical mileage.

    Jim Fish, a vice president of Opus IVS, a tech-focused collision-repair company, said the best question to ask about a battery’s care is how often it was left below 20% and above 80% of its charge.

    Leaving a battery too close to empty or on a full charge for too long affects its ability to hold a charge, Fish said.

    “Of course, you might struggle to find out the truth to that question,” Fish said.

    Recurrent provides reports on EV battery health aimed at helping shoppers choose between cars.

    You can get up to $4,000 off thanks to federal tax credits

    At the start of last year, a used-EV tax credit went into effect as part of a larger incentive program in the Inflation Reduction Act. Automotive retail analysts described it as a welcome change for EV shoppers on a budget.

    To qualify for the credit, the vehicle must be purchased at a dealership so that the dealer can report the required information to the IRS.

    The buyer must be purchasing the vehicle for personal use and not for resale, must not be the original owner of the vehicle, must not be able to be claimed as a dependent, and must not have used any other clean-vehicle credit in the previous three years. Income caps for buyers range from $75,000 to $150,000, depending on their tax-filing status.

    The vehicle must have a sale price of $25,000 or less and must be at least two model years old.

    Many states also have tax incentives for purchasing EVs. More detailed information and required forms can be found on the IRS’s website.

    The buyer must be purchasing the vehicle for personal use and not for resale, must not be the original owner of the vehicle, must not be able to be claimed as a dependent, and must not have used any other clean-vehicle credit in the previous three years. Income caps for buyers range from $75,000 to $150,000, depending on their tax-filing status.

    The vehicle must have a sale price of $25,000 or less and must be at least two model years old.

    Electric-vehicle prices are falling across the board. And as more models flood the market, you can get a particularly good deal on a used EV.

    But shelling out thousands of dollars on an unfamiliar piece of technology (especially one that’s been around the block a few times) is daunting for some shoppers.

    Aside from wondering which car to buy, used-EV shoppers might be wondering whether the battery could die. Shoppers on a budget might also be looking for more ways to save money, as EV tax credits broadened to include used electric cars in January 2023.

    The research can be a lot to take on at once. We talked to car-buying experts to demystify the process.

    Consider where and how much you drive

    Scott Case, the cofounder and CEO of Recurrent, a startup that tracks EV battery health, recommended starting by considering how far you typically drive and the climate you live in — those factors will affect how much range you’ll want, as EVs perform best in temperate weather and can’t drive quite as far in cold temperatures.

    “Let’s say you live in Florida and you drive 30 to 50 miles every day — you can pretty much buy anything,” Case said. On the other hand, people who travel 150 miles daily and live in the occasionally frigid Midwest would need to shop around for a long-range vehicle.

    Knowing your average mileage going in is key when researching a used EV. Even fast chargers can take more than an hour to refill your battery.

    Most older electric cars don’t have the range of the latest offerings — you might find models with estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency of only 80 to 120 miles.

    Battery range will degrade over time

    Anyone who’s owned a smartphone knows that lithium-ion batteries wear out over time. Pretty much the same goes for EVs.

    As the years go by, cycles of charging and driving wear out an EV’s battery pack, reducing driving range. The vehicle-data firm Geotab has estimated that EV batteries tend to lose about 2% of their capacity each year.

    The good news is that an EV’s battery is unlikely to fail completely or render the car useless.

    But understanding how much life a vehicle has left isn’t all that simple. Case said that exposure to extreme temperatures, frequent trips to powerful DC fast chargers, and variations in battery chemistry mean some used cars perform better than others with identical mileage.

    How do you keep yourself entertained during a long flight? Some people watch a movie, read a book, stare outside the window or simply snooze. However, one coffee lover could not resist whipping a delicious cup of coffee during a flight. This coffee was not prepared with instant coffee powder. No, the man decided to make an artisanal pour-over coffee “30,000 ft in the air”. This unique attempt was captured and posted by content creator @montana.ontour on Instagram. She was sitting behind the man who made the coffee and ended up capturing the entire process.
    The video went viral on Instagram and has garnered 9.8 million views. The clip begins with the man first grinding the coffee beans. Next, he sets up the filter and kettle and delicately pours the water required to make an artisanal pour-over coffee. Finally, the freshly brewed coffee is poured into a cup.

    The text on the video reads, “Not the guy sitting in front of us on the plane whipping out all the gear for an artisanal pour-over coffee during our flight. He caught us sticky-beaking and gave us a cup, what a guy!”
    In the caption, the content creator wrote, “The ending took me out haha what a legend! Saving us from the impending doom of airplane cart coffee. How good is his setup though? He was mile-high cooking! Grinding the beans, delicately pouring the water. So cute when he was done, his friends seated all across the plane dropped in for a cuppa. Even the cabin crew came flocking asking questions about the process!”
    She added, “Never in my life did I expect to see a setup like this 30,000 ft in the air. And the smell, wow, made the cabin smell like a coffee shop!”

    The video left Instagram users intrigued and the comments section was flooded with appreciative comments from fellow coffee lovers. Take a look:

    “This man knows better than to drink airplane coffee,” wrote an Instagram user. Another added, “He is an artist and the plane was his canvas.”

    When you go to a restaurant or buy food from a store, you assume it’s safe to eat, right? But if the people handling your food aren’t following proper hygiene practices, you could end up with a nasty case of food poisoning. On Friday, September 13, food safety officials conducted raids and inspections at several eateries in the Vidyanagar area of Secunderabad and found multiple food safety violations. The inspections, carried out by the Task Force teams of Telangana’s Commissioner of Food Safety, revealed alarming lapses in food safety and handling practices at several eateries, including Emerald Mithai Shop, Subway, Rollzone and Good Fresh – The Pizza House, in Hyderabad.

    At Emerald Mithai Shop, inspectors found no pest control and medical fitness certificates. Plus, no FOSTAC-trained personnel were present, and the wood-pressed oil manufacturing area door was left outside without insect-proof screens. The shop also had unlabelled sweets and savouries on display and open dustbins without lids were seen. Some items sold at the shop did not have FSSAI certificates, and food handlers were not wearing gloves or aprons.

    Subway was also found to be violating hygiene norms. Semi-prepared ingredients and ready-to-cook food items were not properly labelled, and use-by dates were missing. The gap between storage racks and walls was not maintained, leading to pest infection risks. Moreover, the fast-food chain outlet did not have a FOSTAC-trained supervisor.

    Similar violations were found at Rollzone and Good Fresh – The Pizza House. Rollzone did not display its FSSAI licence, and food items stored in the refrigerator lacked labels. Food handlers were also not wearing necessary protective gear such as head caps, aprons, or gloves. At Good Fresh, the FSSAI registration copy was not displayed on the premises, and medical fitness and pest control records were missing.

    Earlier, the FSSAI shared some food safety tips to follow during the monsoon season:

    1. Wash all food products purchased from the market properly before cooking.
    2. Keep yourself and your surroundings clean, and wash your hands with soap and water before cooking and eating.
    3. Use only clean water for cooking.
    4. Eat freshly cooked food and cook only as much as you need.
    5. Refrigerate leftover food as soon as it cools down to avoid microbial growth.
    6. Heat leftover food properly before consuming it.
    7. Keep perishables like milk and curd in the refrigerator immediately.
    8. Use fresh and local food products.
    9. Include immunity-boosting ingredients like pepper, garlic, ginger, cumin seeds, coriander, and turmeric in your diet. Read more here.
