  • Melissa Leong more in demand than ever as she teases yet another gig after exit from MasterChef Australia: ‘I am working on another show’

Melissa Leong more in demand than ever as she teases yet another gig after exit from MasterChef Australia: ‘I am working on another show’

Melissa Leong has proven she is more in demand than ever after leaving MasterChef Australia.

The former cooking show judge has teased yet another new gig after landing roles in sports reporting, children’s TV and and the health sector.

‘All will be revealed soon, but I am working on another show,’ the 42-year-old told the Daily Telegraph this week.

Melissa added that she is gaining valuable experience by taking on so many different roles.

‘I think each of those jobs, each of those experiences, makes me inherently better at everything, which is really exciting, and that was always the intent of exiting MasterChef and stepping into Dessert Masters’ she said.

The TV star recently admitted that her current career path isn’t ‘strategic’ – and that is the way she likes it.

‘In my time on earth so far, I’ve been a make-up artist; worked in advertising and PR; been a food, travel and lifestyle journalist; worked in publishing and radio; and hosted food shows on major networks. None of it really makes any strategic sense on paper’ she tells Stellar Magazine.

‘All I can say is that it’s been a daisy chain of saying ‘yes’ to opportunities that excite and slightly scare me. And I can guarantee that when starting another new thing, I didn’t always immediately slay.

‘I’m not saying I have it dialled, but I have learnt you need to be willing to humble yourself in these moments of transition.’

She added: ‘In the past year, I realise I have confused a whole bunch of people by dipping a toe into the world of sports journalism, specifically interviewing champion athletes in the world of mixed martial arts’.

It comes after Melissa announced she is realising a childhood dream by appearing on the ABC’s Playschool.

‘I grew up watching Playschool’ she began in her caption on Instagram on Sunday.

'All will be revealed soon, but I am working on another show,' the 42-year-old told the Daily Telegraph this week

‘This iconic show has been a part of Australian entertainment for 60 years, and so it blows my mind that coming up this week, I get to be part of the magic!’

She continued: ‘This is the only time you’re ever going to see me sing and dance on television, just so you know how much I wanted to do this!’

Melissa also fronted a new three-part documentary series about Australia’s health system.

The TV star appeared in the new SBS docuseries The Hospital: In The Deep End in June.

'I think each of those jobs, each of those experiences, makes me inherently better at everything, which is really exciting, and that was always the intent of exiting MasterChef and stepping into Dessert Masters' she said. Pictured in her recent appearance on Play School

The program saw her spend time with medical professionals at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney to further understand health challenges in Australia.

The former MasterChef Australia judge told TV WEEK that filming the series was challenging.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph in October, the journalist and food critic described the show as ‘full of heart’ and ‘incredible people’ who are committed to saving lives.

The food critic was dropped from MasterChef Australia last year amid rumours of a feud between herself and fellow judges Andy Allen and the late Jock Zonfrillo, which she has denied.

She went on to host MasterChef spinoff series Dessert Masters alongside Amaury Guichon.

Her enthusiasm was palpable when recently speaking to Daily Mail Australia about her new hosting gig on Dessert Masters, describing it as a ‘dream come true’.

Additionally, she announced that she would be hosting UFC Fight Week on Kayo Sports and Foxtel.

  • Presenters Kelly Cates, Hayley McQueen and Christine Lampard set to launch new Overlap podcast series ‘Not Just Football’- as the trio aim to build on the successes Gary Neville’s ‘Stick to Football’ show

Presenters Kelly Cates, Hayley McQueen and Christine Lampard set to launch new Overlap podcast series ‘Not Just Football’- as the trio aim to build on the successes Gary Neville’s ‘Stick to Football’ show

Sky Sports presenters Kelly Cates and Hayley McQueen are launching a new Overlap podcast series called ‘Not Just Football’ alongside ITV’s Christine Lampard on October 8.

The trio will host a weekly show reacting to football’s biggest talking points from a unique angle as they look to share their expertise from their experiences within the game.

The series will also tackle a variety of different topics outside of the sport, with the presenters interviewing experts and stars from different backgrounds.

Cates’ and McQueen’s relationship spans back to their childhood due to their father’s Kenny Dalglish and Gordon McQueen playing together with the Scotland national team throughout the 1970s and 80s.

With Lampard – the wife of Chelsea legend Frank – joining them in the The Overlap‘s newest venture brought to you by Sky Bet, the presenters are hoping their chemistry will bring a fresh perspective to football podcasting.

‘What we’re looking for is something from the weekends football that isn’t necessarily being covered elsewhere,’ Cates told Mail Sport. ‘There are so many football podcasts and trying to find something that isn’t done is really tricky.

‘So it’s not about analysis. It’s not necessarily about a deep dive into the tactics of the North London Derby or whatever, but it’s about the stories around it more than that.’

‘Not Just Football’ marks the latest endeavour of the Overlap which produces Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet.

With their newest project looking to ride the wave of success of the award-winning show, hosted by Gary Neville, McQueen believes it’s the right time for the podcast to come out.

The Sky Sports presenter told Mail Sport: ‘It came out of [how] I worked with a lot of the guys at buzz and the guys who are working on the Overlap and Stick to Football and love what they do.

‘I was like “There’s a place for this” with three females discussing topics and things in a slightly different way. We’re not ex-footballers. We’re all linked to ex-footballers or current managers or what have you, and we all have a lot in common.’

Cates has worked with the Overlap in previous years, hosting their live shows as Neville, Jamie Carragher, and Co, travel the country engaging with fans.

Cates, the daughter of Kenny Dalglish, has said the podcast will be different to others out there

The 48-year-old has a strong relationship with Stick to Football hosts Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher due to working with them on Sky Sports

The 48-year-old has built a strong relationship with the pair of former football stars turned pundits by working with them on Sky with regularity over the last decade.

And while she believes it’s too early for ‘Not Just Football’ to rival her colleague’s podcast, Cates sees no reason why it can’t emulate their success in the future.

‘[Stick to Football] is one of my favourites because I know them off camera and on camera, I see them both sides,’ explained Cates.

‘What I really love about it are the moments where you see them and their personalities and their relationships. So I think that’s definitely something that we’re hoping to build on.

‘It’d be a bit brave of us to try and take them on early on. But maybe once we are more established you might think about setting up a bit of a rivalry.’

Meanwhile, McQueen thinks the qualities that the background of Cates, Lampard, and herself, will provide a different type of podcast to that hosted by Neville and Carragher.

‘We’re very different from that,’ added McQueen. ‘We’ve all gone through very different things in life, and I think we’ll be speaking quite openly about some of the challenges that we faced in our personal lives, and in our careers.

‘We’re not going to be there as three women pretending. It’s not going to be like Loose Women, that’s for sure.

‘I think it’ll be very, very different to the current Stick to Football in that none of us have played, but we’ve all been influenced by the game in different ways.’

Not Just Football, brought to you by Sky Bet, is launching on 8th October via The Overlap YouTube channel.

  • Details from New Mexico’s lawsuit against Snap show site failed to act on reports of sextortion

Details from New Mexico’s lawsuit against Snap show site failed to act on reports of sextortion

Snapchat failed to act on “rampant” reports of child grooming, sextortion and other dangers to minors on its platform, according to a newly unredacted complaint against the company filed by New Mexico’s attorney general.

Attorney General Raúl Torrez filed the original complaint on Sept. 4, but internal messages and other details were heavily redacted. Tuesday’s filing unveils internal messages among Snap Inc. employees and executives that provide “further confirmation that Snapchat’s harmful design features create an environment that fosters sextortion, sexual abuse and unwanted contact from adults to minors,” Torrez said in a news release.

For instance, former trust and safety employees complained there was “pushback” from management when they tried to add safety mechanisms, according to the lawsuit. Employees also noted that user reports on grooming and sextortion — persuading a person to send explicit photos online and then threatening to make the images public unless the victim pays money or engages in sexual favors — were falling through the cracks. At one point, an account remained active despite 75 reports against it over mentions of “nudes, minors and extortion.”

Snap said in a statement that its platform was designed “with built-in safety guardrails” and that the company made “deliberate design choices to make it difficult for strangers to discover minors on our service.”

“We continue to evolve our safety mechanisms and policies, from leveraging advanced technology to detect and block certain activity, to prohibiting friending from suspicious accounts, to working alongside law enforcement and government agencies, among so much more,” the company said.

According to the lawsuit, Snap was well aware, but failed to warn parents, young users and the public that “sextortion was a rampant, ‘massive,’ and ‘incredibly concerning issue’ on Snapchat.”

A November 2022 internal email from a trust and safety employee says Snapchat was getting “around 10,000” user reports of sextortion each month.

“If this is correct, we have an incredibly concerning issue on our hands, in my humble opinion,” the email continues.

Another employee replied that it’s worth noting that the number likely represents a “small fraction of this abuse,” since users may be embarrassed and because sextortion is “not easy to categorize” when trying to report it on the site.

Torrez filed the lawsuit against Santa Monica, California-based Snap Inc. in state court in Santa Fe. In addition to sexual abuse, the lawsuit claims the company also openly promotes child trafficking and the sale of illicit drugs and guns.

Fears Home and Away veteran is leaving the show after they notice bombshell detail in racy photos

Home and Away fans have been whipped into a frenzy after discovering a worrying photo posted to social media, leading them to believe a series veteran is leaving.

Fans recently noticed that actress Emily Weir, who has played Mackenzie Booth on the show since 2019, is currently on a big US holiday with former co-stars Sarah Roberts and Tim Franklin.

It recently emerged that Emily’s three-year contract on the series is soon to expire, leading fans to speculate her ‘holiday’ may actually be a farewell party.

Alongside a happy snap of Emily sunbaking by a hotel pool, one fan wrote: ‘Emily’s contract is up and she has been travelling with Sarah Roberts and Tim Franklin.’

Meanwhile, Sarah shared a bikini snap to her Instagram account which captured Emily rocking her best angles on the California holiday in a very skimpy two-piece while having fun in a pool with Tim.

Sarah, 39, and Tim, 34, appeared on the long-running Channel Seven soap opera alongside Emily, but they both left in 2021.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Channel Seven for comment.

Last month, Emily and her co-star Tristan Gorey made the bombshell admission they considered leaving the series following a recent shock death on the show.

The pair, who play lovebirds Mackenzie and Levi on the series, admitted they were affected by the recent character death of Felicity Newman, played by Jacqui Purvis.

‘I don’t ever want Mackenzie to die. I want her to leave the Bay, so there’s always a place where I can come back to,’ Emily, 33, told Yahoo Lifestyle.

The brunette bombshell added if her character had to die she would like it to be in a very dramatic and memorable manner.

‘If I had to, I’d love to be in a gunfight or something really left of field. Really do some martial arts, like a fight scene or something.’

However, it has recently emerged that Emily's three-year contract on the series is soon to expire, leading fans to speculate her 'holiday' may be a farewell party for her, as she leaves the show for good

In August, fans were left devastated when fan-favourite character Felicity Newman, played by Jacqui Purvis, collapsed in shock scenes.

In the clip which had fans in tears, Felicity suddenly fell to the ground when her vision went blurry during an emotional conversation with ex-husband Tane Parata.

The character was then rushed to hospital in critical condition, as promos confirmed she will die and actress Jacqui will move on from Summer Bay.

Paris Jackson looked sharp at Stella McCartney‘s spring 2025 show in Paris, where she sat front row between Paramore’s Haley Williams and Olympic diver Tom Daley on Sept. 30 in a trench coat and vegan slingback pumps.

Jackson embraced the trench coat dress trend in a light brown double-breasted jacket that fell to her ankles. The jacket was cinched at the waist with a tightly fastened belt, creating a dramatic silhouette for the singer and model. No other garments were visible, allowing the jacket to stand on its own as a statement piece. She accessorized with oversized brown tinted sunglasses and a burgundy purse with gold trim.

Also at the event, Ashley Graham wore a white cinched coat and selected black pointed pumps to accent it. The style is certainly popular right now — at New York Fashion Week, Madonna wore a trench coat with pronounced shoulder pads; not long before that, Angelina Jolie was in Venice wearing a short sleeve cinched trench coat.

When it came to her footwear, Jackson appeared to be wearing Stella McCartney’s Elsa Vegan Patent Slingback Pumps in a deep shade of red called Bordeaux. The shoes are faux leather, made of a polyurethane material in lieu of animal skin. This would made them an ideal footwear choice for Jackson, who is vegan and in 2022 was named ambassador for vegan brand KVD Beauty.

The shoes feature a classic pointed toe and an adjustable slingback strap adorned with a sparkling buckle. The sculpted stiletto heel measures 3.5 inches, providing a substantial elevation. Neiman Marcus currently carries the shoes in this color for $860.

Jackson appeared at Stella McCartney’s show last year during Paris Fashion Week, when she opted for a different double-breasted aesthetic including a minidress and peacoat; she complemented the outfit with reptile print heeled sandals featuring a gold chain strap.

Stella McCartney, who is a lifelong vegetarian, has never incorporated leather, feathers, skin or fur into her creations. Jackson once modeled McCartney’s trademarked Mylo pieces, bio-based garments made from lab-grown mycelium, the underground root system of mushrooms.

When she isn’t repping Stella McCartney, Jackson wears a variety of styles, including black platform sandals from vegan brand Pīferi and red sandals from Christian Louboutin.

  • The Block host Scott Cam is ‘ready to call quits’ and retire for good from the reno show – after he slammed 2024 contestants for being ‘less resilient’

The Block host Scott Cam is ‘ready to call quits’ and retire for good from the reno show – after he slammed 2024 contestants for being ‘less resilient’

Scott Cam is reportedly ready to hang up his tool belt and retire from The Block after 14 years as its host.

The media personality, 61, who took over as host from Jamie Durie in 2010 during season three of the series, is said to be frustrated with contestants in recent years.

Woman’s Day reports that Scott’s had enough and 2025 will be his last year, but Nine says that’s just not the case.

An insider alleges that Scott revealed his retirement plans while filming season 20, saying he was only doing ‘this year and next’ on the show.

‘When Jesse [Maguire] and Paige [Beechey] quit the series mid-season, it really shocked him and made him even more determined to walk away in 2025,’ they said.

‘Scott holds The Block very dear to his heart and he couldn’t understand why anyone would leave his hit series and the highly emotional decision they made.

‘It reinforced to him the idea of leaving on a high next year to spend more time with his family.’

The source went on to reference similar rumours which spread in 2023 about Scott retiring soon, but Nine ‘squashed’ those by signing him onto a new deal.

Scott Cam, 61, (pictured) is reportedly ready to hang up his tool belt and retire from The Block after 14 years as its host

Scott Cam, 61, (pictured) is reportedly ready to hang up his tool belt and retire from The Block after 14 years as its host

However, the deal is said to have only covered two years, keeping Scott on as host for the 2024 20th anniversary season and the 2025 Daylesford season.

According to the insider, it was all ‘part of a grand plan for Scott to leave on a high with very two different and challenging seasons of the renovation show’.

The Block was originally set to film in Daylesford this year, but complications with receiving council permits pushed that renovation back to next year.

Producers scrambled at the last second to secure a run down resort on Phillip Island, dropping a staggering $9.5 million on Island Cove Villas,

The insider said Scott was ‘bitterly disappointed’ when Daylesford was put on the backburner because he wanted to host that season ‘then bow out graciously’.

However, Nine has once again put those rumours to rest, telling Daily Mail Australia on Monday: ‘Scott Cam has no plans to step down from The Block.’

It comes just days after Jesse, 29, and Paige, 27, lashed out at host Scott after he made ‘distasteful’ comments about recent participants on the show.

Last month, Scott said contestants of the Channel Nine renovation series have less grit than they did 20 years ago, when the show began.

‘They are less resilient than they were 20 years ago, 15 years ago,’ Scott told news.com.au at the time.

‘There’s more expectation of it getting easier, but it’s not. It gets harder… And people aren’t ready for how hard it is.’

Jesse and Paige, who dramatically left the show halfway through the current season, hit back at Scott’s comments.

‘A lot of people didn’t like what Scott said. A lot of people did not like that. I think that was very distasteful,’ Paige told Yahoo Lifestyle.

Jesse went on to point out the show is completely different these days and contestants no longer have time to build due to challenges and daily consultations.

The Block host Scott addressed rumours of his impending retirement from Nine’s hit renovation show to Daily Mail Australia as recently as last year.

Rumour now has it Scott's had enough and 2025 will be his last year, reported Woman's Day on Monday, but Nine says that's just not the case. Pictured: Scott and co-host Shelley Craft

The builder-turned-reality TV host attended a launch party for the 2023 season of his show and told the crowd he was planning on staying for a long time.

‘Two months ago I signed a multiple year deal with the Nine Network. It was an easy decision as I love this show and couldn’t think of going anywhere else,’ he said.

Scott then said while he had no immediate retirement plans, when that day came in the distant future he had the perfect person in mind to take over as host.

‘I reckon the only person who could do it is my current co-host Shelley Craft, that’s right,’ he said.

Shelley, 48, added there was no one better suited than her to take over the reins when the time finally came.

‘That’s my job, isn’t it? Don’t I step up and then I get a sidekick?’ she joked.

In 2022, Scott addressed speculation about his future on the show yet again, telling Daily Mail Australia he would be on building sites for decades to come.

The veteran tradie has a 40 plus-year career behind him and has hosted The Block for the past 14 years—with seemingly no desire to stop any time soon.

‘I’m 60 this year and I’m physically fit, I’m doing a renovation of my home now because of the mould from all the rain,’ he told Daily Mail Australia at the time.

‘I’ve got at least another decade on the tools. I told my wife recently, we’ve got 20 years of good health left so from January 1, let’s start a 20-year odyssey of living life.

‘I’ll keep going till I can’t anymore because I love it. I reckon I can do 20 years on the tools, and I’ll pull up when my body tells me to.’

  • When to Show Appreciation and When to Refrain

When to Show Appreciation and When to Refrain

Business giving is one of the best ways to teach relationships, enforce organizational norms, and appreciate staff, clients, and associates. As crucial as what a corporate gift is, is where, when, and how of giving the gift to the target or recipient. In corporate gifting, a company may cause a rift between the two businesses by either offending the recipient or causing misunderstandings. The idea behind corporate gifting should be understood in the best light possible to give a good impression of the company offering them.

    When to Give Corporate Gifts

    1. Employee Recognition

Corporate gifts are best suited for employees according to their performances. These are times when the employee has completed one year at work, got a promotion, or even when the organization has achieved important milestones of certain large projects. Gifts exchanged on such occasions benefit recipients since they give them the feeling of being appreciated, boost the morale of the worker who is given the gift, and increase loyalty.

    2. Holidays

    © pexels

Another good example is ‘seasonal presents’ which is a common sales motivator for the UK and used during events such as Christmas or Diwali season to give business gifts. Many organisations offer holiday traditions such as gift-giving as a way of rewarding customers and workers. But do avoid culturally specific items or gifts that make sense during a certain season of the year and not so during other times.

    3. Client Relationship Building

Gifts for the workplace can be useful in enhancing client relations. In business, after a client has closed a major transaction or acquired a large business deal or partnership, it is advisable to follow up by sending out a token to mark the achievement since this will go a long way in creating a good impression. But do not overdo this, ensure that you do not give them gifts that will make them think that you are trying to influence them.

    4. Welcoming New Employees or Clients

    © pexels

The first impression is important when it comes to new employees or customers in your business and a welcome gift will go a long way in ensuring that this first impression is perfect. These do not need to be expensive—a mug or t-shirt with the brand and a personal item, in the beginning, makes the person feel valued in the organization.

    5. Major Business Milestones

Organizing gifts for business accomplishments—anniversaries, mergers, and opening new offices are other good examples of when it is appropriate to show employees and partners gratitude. These gifts can be given to mark the accomplishments of a group as well as foster unity among employees.

    6. Special Events or Conferences

    © pexels

Products for corporate gifting during events, seminars, or conferences are appropriate for creating an impression. Branded t-shirts, branded bags, fliers, or any other item associated with your company will keep your company fresh in the minds of attendees. Just be sure that appropriate gifts indeed have to be meaningful and should correspond to the nature of an event.

When to Avoid Giving a Corporate Gift

    1. During Negotiations

Offering gifts during the time of contract or a deal in the process of making is described as questionable, which makes it unethical. Do not offer gifts at some highly sensitive periods often used when conducting competitive negotiations such as bidding.

    2. To Avoid Favoritism

    © pexels

Avoid situations where you gift only bosses while your junior and equal colleagues get nothing in a group setting. Failure to do this can result in perceptions of bias and can cause jealousy among others. If you have to gift on such occasions, make it a group one or at par with the commendation practice in the institution.

    3. When It Violates Corporate Policies

It is often the case that many companies, particularly the big ones, have certain best black-and-white practices when it comes to corporate gifting primarily because of the rules against bribery. You should find out if your gesture is allowed by the recipient’s company before you send them a gift. Sometimes, it is safer not to take any chance and risk falling into ethical or, worse, legal troubles.

    4. Gifting Too Frequently

    © pexels

It is good to sometimes acknowledge people and show that you care for them although gifting is good its importance should not be overdone as this may result in nominal importance in the people involved. It is good to set up gifts for serious occasions and not give gifts frequently since this will reduce the meaning of the gift.

    5. Personal Gifts in Professional Settings

Lastly, do not give personal gifts that might make your colleagues, clients or bosses feel uncomfortable during a business setting. Some items such as perfume, dress code, or ring might act as a form of sexual harassment and the recipient might stand a chance to be offended.

    Guidelines for Optimum Corporate Gift-Giving

    1. Personalization Matters

One must ensure to use various techniques to bring personalization to the gifts that you give to a person working at a higher position. Such extras as engraving the title of the recipient or writing a message on the card can turn a gift into something special.

    2. Select Gifts that are Useful and Considered

Use gifts that are required or that fit the recipient’s interests. Appreciable, useful products like branded technology gadgets, gourmet food hampers or baskets, and organic or recycled products are easy to remember.

If you are planning for corporate gifting products, especially for corporations in the technological sector, Pebble is the best bet for you!

    3. Be Culturally Sensitive

There is nothing wrong with gifting seasonally during an international business holiday but cut across the cultures of the clients, employees, or team members if you do not want your gift to landfill. In some cultures, the gifts may have to be moderate while in the other may have to be off certain items of the list. Take some time and try to find out more about the recipient to know how he or she will take your gift.

    4. Consider the Timing

Corporate gifts, therefore, need to be delivered at the most appropriate time. Now, only saying the wrong thing at the wrong time can be unfortunate because giving a gift too early or too late also loses a man. It is best to link your gifting timing to key events or events to make sure that it appears instead compelling to the recipient.

    Conclusion

Business gifts can be very powerful tools in reinforcing the message of thank you and in enhancing relations when used properly. Therefore, it’s important to know when to give gifts and when not to make good impressions that can be remembered. The use of gifts, properly timed, can help to encourage loyalty and create good feelings among your employees and your clients.

  • Scientists show how pregnancy changes the brain in innumerable ways

Scientists show how pregnancy changes the brain in innumerable ways

Neuroscientist Liz Chrastil got the unique chance to see how her brain changed while she was pregnant and share what she learned in a new study that offers the first detailed map of a woman’s brain throughout gestation.

The transition to motherhood, researchers discovered, affects nearly every part of the brain.

Although the study looks at only one person, it kicks off a large, international research project that aims to scan the brains of hundreds of women and could one day provide clues about disorders like postpartum depression.

“It’s been a very long journey,” said Chrastil, co-author of the paper published Monday in Nature Neuroscience. “We did 26 scans before, during and after pregnancy” and found “some really remarkable things.”

More than 80% of the regions studied had reductions in the volume of gray matter, where thinking takes place. This is an average of about 4% of the brain — nearly identical to a reduction that happens during puberty. While less gray matter may sound bad, researchers said it probably isn’t; it likely reflects the fine-tuning of networks of interconnected nerve cells called “neural circuits” to prepare for a new phase of life.

The team began following Chrastil — who works at the University of California, Irvine, and was 38 years old at the time — shortly before she became pregnant through in vitro fertilization.

During the pregnancy and for two years after she gave birth, they continued doing MRI brain scans and drawing blood to observe how her brain changed as sex hormones like estrogen ebbed and flowed. Some of the changes continued past pregnancy.

“Previous studies had taken snapshots of the brain before and after pregnancy, but we’ve never witnessed the brain in the midst of this metamorphosis,” said co-author Emily Jacobs of the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Unlike past studies, this one focused on many inner regions of the brain as well as the cerebral cortex, the outermost layer, said Joseph Lonstein, a professor of neuroscience and psychology at Michigan State University who was not involved in the research. It’s “a good first step to understanding much more about whole-brain changes that could be possible in a woman across pregnancy and postpartum,” he said.

Research in animals has linked some brain changes with qualities that could be helpful when caring for an infant. While the new study doesn’t address what the changes mean in terms of human behavior, Lonstein pointed out that it describes changes in brain areas involved in social cognition, or how people interact with others and understand their thoughts and feelings, for example.

The researchers have partners in Spain and are moving forward with the larger Maternal Brain Project, which is supported by the Ann S. Bowers Women’s Brain Health Initiative and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Eventually, they hope scientists can use data from a large number of women for things like predicting postpartum depression before it happens.

“There is so much about the neurobiology of pregnancy that we don’t understand yet, and it’s not because women are too complicated. It’s not because pregnancy is some Gordian knot,” Jacobs said. “It’s a byproduct of the fact that biomedical sciences have historically ignored women’s health.”

  • New Studies Show How Post-Treatment Lifestyle Choices Shape Long-Term Outcomes After Breast Cancer Diagnosis

New Studies Show How Post-Treatment Lifestyle Choices Shape Long-Term Outcomes After Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Three studies led by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute researchers have encouraging implications for patients with breast cancer.

Two studies focus on breastfeeding after breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. The studies found it was safe and feasible for young patients carrying specific genetic variations to breastfeed without raising their risk of a cancer recurrence or a cancer in the other breast, and that it was safe and feasible to breastfeed for patients with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer who conceived after a temporary interruption of endocrine therapy. The third study shows that a telephone-based coaching program can significantly increase physical activity in overweight patients, potentially improving their outcomes. The studies were presented at the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress 2024 in Barcelona, Spain.

Breastfeeding after breast cancer safe and feasible in survivors of breast cancer

The first study was a collaboration among investigators at 78 hospitals and cancer treatment centers worldwide. It involved 474 patients with inherited mutations in the cancer-susceptibility genes BRCA1 or BRCA2 who became pregnant after being diagnosed with Stage I-III invasive breast cancer at age 40 or younger.

Researchers divided the patients into two groups – those who breastfed after delivering a child and those who did not – and tracked their health over time. At a median of seven years after delivery, there was no difference between the two groups in the incidence of cancer in the region of the original tumor or in the opposite breast. Disease-free survival – how long patients live free of cancer – and overall survival were also the same for the two groups.

The second study provides breastfeeding outcomes from the POSITIVE trial which demonstrated early safety of the temporary interruption of endocrine therapy to attempt pregnancy. A key secondary endpoint was breastfeeding outcomes. The study involved 518 patients at age 42 or younger with HR+, Stage I-III breast cancer. Of these patients, 317 went on to have a live birth and 196 chose to breastfeed. Breast conserving surgery was a key factor favoring breastfeeding.

Prior research led by Dana-Farber has demonstrated that young breast cancer survivors who have breast conserving therapy and then go on to breastfeed can have challenges nursing from the treated breast and need to rely on the opposite unaffected breast to feed the baby.

“These studies provide the first evidence on the safety of breastfeeding after breast cancer in both young patients carrying BRCA variations that predispose to breast cancer, as well as patients who conceived after pausing endocrine therapy,” says Ann Partridge, MD, MPH, the founder and director of the Program for Young Adults with Breast Cancer at Dana-Farber, and a senior investigator on the study. “Our findings emphasize the possibility of supporting maternal and infant needs without compromising maternal safety.”

A coaching program for increased exercise

The third study draws on data from the Breast Cancer Weight Loss (BWEL) trial, which is exploring whether participating in a weight loss program after a breast cancer diagnosis can reduce the risk of cancer recurrence in women with a body mass index (BMI) in the overweight or obese range. The BWEL trial randomized 3,180 women with breast cancer to a group that received a telephone-based coaching program focused on reducing calories and increasing exercise combined with health education materials versus health education materials alone.

The study’s primary goal is to determine whether the weight loss program reduces the risk of cancer recurrence and secondary aims focus on evaluating whether the weight loss program helps breast cancer survivors to exercise more and eat a healthier diet.

The study, presented at ESMO,  looks at changes in exercise in 541 BWEL study participants who took part in a substudy that evaluated their exercise patterns over time. Half of the patients took part in the weight loss program and the education program, and the other half received educational materials only.

At the time of enrolling in the trial, patients in both groups did very little exercise—a median of zero minutes per week in the health education group and 10 minutes per week in the weight loss group. By six months after enrollment, women receiving the weight loss program increased their weekly exercise by a median 40 minutes and the women in the education group did not increase their exercise at all. Additionally, women taking part in the weight loss program were more likely to exercise at least 150 minutes per week—a level of exercise linked to many health benefits–and less likely to report no exercise at all, as compared to women in the education alone group.

Across all the patients in the study, those who engaged in at least 150 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity per week had greater weight loss than those who did not.

“Our results show that a telephone-based weight-loss intervention can motivate this group of patients to be more physically active,” says the study’s first author, Jennifer Ligibel, MD, the Director of the Leonard P. Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies and Healthy Living at Dana-Farber. “We’ll continue to follow these patients to determine whether changes in exercise influence cancer outcomes.”
