  • Explosion of interest in sticker albums shows huge potential for women’s football | Women’s football

Gripped in the pocket of my Adidas joggers was a little stack of stickers with an elastic band around it. Flicking down the edge of the bundle with my finger I would glance at the huddle of boys trading the hottest commodity in the playground with a nervousness that was enough to hold me back from even trying to join in.

I could play football, sure, that was the easy part, but could I talk their talk, did I know football? Of course I did. I watched it, I played it, I read the back pages, but it never felt like I belonged. And so, my little stack of swaps remained unswapped, shinies unshared, and my pocket money was depleted week on week as I spent it desperately trying to accrue my missing targets, never completing a book.

When I wanted little gold cannon earrings? I had to spend double, buying two from the Arsenal store as they were only sold individually for boys and men. When I wanted a shirt? It was a boys’ small, boys’ medium or boys’ large shirt that fitted awkwardly on the hips as I edged towards puberty. When I wanted to play Fifa 97? I played as the Arsenal men’s team. As a girl, I was excluded from the culture of football as much as I was from playing it.

Imagine, then, what it feels like today. Last year, I held the first Women’s Super League Panini sticker album in my hands, at the age of 38, with the biggest of grins and worked on completing the album with my then 10-year-old son, trading with his mates, their parents and in press boxes up and down the country. I have built Ultimate Teams stacked with women’s players on EA FC. I have a pair of gold cannon studs sold as a pair. I attended an event to showcase the inclusion of women’s football in Football Manager for the first time. I own an Aitana Bonmatí-autographed Topps trading card.

Some of Suzanne Wrack’s collection of Topps trading cards, including the one signed by Aitana Bonmatí (bottom left).

The expansion and promotion of women’s football into football’s cultural spaces cannot be overestimated. It has the power to influence the way women’s football is viewed by men and women, and how female fans feel. It plays a vital role in normalising women’s football in the game’s ecosystem.

The second WSL Panini sticker album launches in late November and the rollout will be bigger than last year. “We knew it was going to do well because we knew there was this pent-up demand by the time it launched, but we hadn’t realised the extent of it,” says Panini’s sports head of marketing, Katie Gritt. “The shelves were being cleared every time we pushed out stock. We’re talking millions of packets, not a few.”

That demonstrates how quickly the space is growing, but also how desperate women’s football fans are to back those who back it. There is a consciousness there in the consumer, an awareness that if they buy, more products will be produced and that helps grow investment in the game.

“Women’s football supporters are a dedicated crowd, very loyal to their clubs and will definitely spend money on collecting memorabilia,” says Tara Knight, co-founder of She Scores Cards, a company dedicated to buying and selling women’s trading cards. “Whether that’s shirts, cards, scarves, anything. There’s definitely the demand there. When Topps [trading cards] release their women’s products and they’re sold out within a couple of hours, it’s recognised that there’s value in them and people do want to collect them.”

A fan holds up a tinfoil trophy featuring a Panini sticker of Alessia Russo during the Women’s League Cup final between Arsenal and Chelsea in March. Photograph: Matt McNulty/Getty Images

There is also a thirst for information, which isn’t being met, Gritt says: “Having the album full of editorial and stats gives them something else to engage with. They’re desperate for that and for other brands there’s a huge opportunity to come in and cater for that demand.”

I stumbled across She Scores Cards by chance. I was at the London Card Show with my son so he could pick up some Pokémon cards. It was my second time there and I was consciously keeping an eye out for the presence of women’s cards among the sports offerings, a signed Vivianne Miedema here, a Catarina Macario there, often in the corner, surrounded by higher-priced men’s cards.

    skip past newsletter promotion

Suddenly, every card on the next table was a women’s card and I got chatting to the two women running it. They were doing as good a trade as many around them and have been welcomed by the London Card Show and the other vendors for their unique offering. Knight and Sam Pucci started as collectors and were frustrated with how hard it was to find women’s cards. “It is a hobby,” says Knight. “We both work full time, so it is something that we are doing in our spare time.”

It’s not just people wanting to collect women’s cards that are taking an interest, it’s collectors of men’s cards too. Those who focus on collecting a particular team, for example Chelsea, now want to add a Sam Kerr or a Millie Bright to their collection.

So much of the culture around women’s football has developed naturally, as companies entering the space are finding out. “There was so much going on organically on match days and in different Facebook groups and this whole community just boomed,” says Gritt. “Groups exist on the men’s side too, but you don’t see that same level of interaction at the grounds as I think we have seen in the WSL.”

A street seller holds a Lionel Messi sticker at Qatar 2022. Panini have been selling men’s World Cup albums since 1970. Photograph: Natacha Pisarenko/AP

The demographic is different too. “There’s a teen audience, which is maybe reflective of them not having it when they were younger” says Gritt. “We don’t often see that on the men’s side, six to 11 is your core age, then you lose them through secondary and then they tend to come back in as adults and collect again. Engaging boys in the WSL collection matters too. Showing them who these players are, what their stats are and what they’re capable of is hugely important, because they will grow up as advocates and supporters of the women’s game.”

Every company that starts to operate in women’s football is surprised by the commitment of the fans, but they shouldn’t be. We’ve gone without for so long, any offering is pounced on.

  • Study shows post-Covid stay-at-home lifestyle ‘new normal’ | Health and Wellness

Study shows post-Covid stay-at-home lifestyle ‘new normal’ | Health and Wellness

Not going out is the “new normal” post-Covid, according to a new study.

Compared with just before the pandemic, researchers found that people are spending nearly an hour less a day doing activities outside the home.

The trend is a lasting consequence of the pandemic, say scientists.

The study reveals an overall drop since 2019 of around 51 minutes in the daily time spent on out-of-home activities, as well as an almost 12-minute reduction in time spent on daily travel such as driving or taking public transport.

The analysis, based on a survey of 34,000 Americans, found a trend of less and less out-of-home time, stretching back to at least 2003.

But Covid and its aftermath have “dramatically” increased the shift into the home, according to the research team from the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA) and Clemson University, South Carolina.

They say the shift towards “going nowhere fast” will affect people and society on many levels.

The research team, who are urban planners, argue that less leaving home calls for a rethink of many planning and transport policies.

    pexels-taryn-elliott-4488194

Their recommendations include repurposing office and retail units given the increase in working and shopping from home.

The team says restrictions on converting commercial buildings to housing should also be relaxed, and curb space for delivery vehicles should increase given the rise in online shopping.

Lead author Professor Eric Morris, of Clemson University, said: “In a world where cities cannot rely on captive office workers and must work to attract residents, workers, and customers, local officials might seek to invest more heavily in their remaining strengths.

“These include opportunities for recreation, entertainment, culture, arts, and more.

“Central cities might shift toward becoming centers of consumption more than production.”

He said, for example, that city centers could capitalize on their strengths by creating dense, multi-unit housing often favored by younger residents and others who prefer more urban lifestyles.

Prof Morris says such changes might also benefit lower-income households and society more generally by lowering both housing and transportation costs.

The researchers say that “going nowhere faster” may have some benefits, such as less time spent traveling, which may reduce fuel use and emissions and save people valuable time and money.

But more staying in might have downsides such as social isolation and loneliness.

The research team found that improvements in information technology, and the fact that people learned to use IT in new ways during the pandemic, was one of the “key drivers” behind the trend.

    pexels-jack-sparrow-4045739

(Photo by Jack Sparrow via Pexels)

The researchers looked at both work and leisure habits using data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS), an annual review of how Americans spend their time.

They assessed the years before, during, and after the pandemic, namely 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. The year 2020 was excluded because it was not completely affected by the pandemic and because data gathering was halted at the height of the outbreak.

The study examined the behavior of people aged 17 and over.

The team grouped time use into 16 activities in the home including sleep, exercise, work, and using IT, plus 12 out-of-home activities such as arts and sporting events, shopping, work, and religious observance.

They also analyzed travel by car, walking, and public transport.

The findings, published in the Journal of the American Planning Association, showed that the time spent on eight of the 12 out-of-home activities fell from 2019 to 2021, while 11 of the 16 in-home activities increased.

The average time for out-of-home activities fell from 334 minutes per day in 2019 to 271 in 2021 – from around 5.5 hours per day out-of-home to 4.5 hours.

The researchers say that working from home explains part of the trend, but there were large reductions in other out-of-home time uses as well.

    pexels-elly-fairytale-3807332

(Photo by Elina Fairytale via Pexels)

A similar trend was seen in travel, with participants spending an estimated 13 fewer minutes a day in cars and other forms of transport.

The researchers said that the downward trend could not be attributed solely to the reductions in the daily commute during COVID-19.

The amount of time spent away from home has only slightly recovered post-pandemic, rebounding by just 11 minutes from 2021 to 2023, from 270 minutes to 281 – still a reduction of 53 minutes in time away from home since 2019.

All out-of-home time, all forms of travel, and seven out-of-home activities remained notably lower in 2023 than in 2019, while eight in-home activities remained higher.

The trend towards staying home seems to be holding post-pandemic, with out-of-home time in 2023 virtually unchanged from 2022.

Television watching did not increase apart from in the early peaks of the pandemic while more exercise activities are now being done at home, most likely because people bought in-home gym equipment.

The research team says that the “retreat into the home” had been ongoing for at least 16 years leading up to the pandemic.

An earlier study they conducted showed that out-of-home activity among adults decreased by about 1.8 minutes a day per year from 2003 to 2019

But the reduction since the pandemic was “much greater” than would be suggested by the previous trend.

Viral Video Shows Restaurant Owner Denying Food To Vlogger – Heres Why

In the age of social media, food vloggers have gained immense popularity. They share their dining experiences with followers and offer reviews on what’s worth a taste. However, this trend has occasionally led to friction between vloggers and restaurant owners. A recent video circulating online shows a food vlogger being denied service at a restaurant after the owner spotted him filming, leading to a heated exchange that has since gone viral. In a video posted on X, the vlogger is seen visiting a restaurant and ordering spring rolls. After asking for the price, he hands over the money to the shopkeeper, who replies, “Rs 60.” The owner then invites the vlogger to take a seat, but the vlogger declines, choosing to continue filming from his current spot.
Shortly after, the owner returns the vlogger’s payment and asks him to leave. The vlogger, clearly taken aback, questions why he is being asked to go. The visibly frustrated owner explains that he noticed the vlogger recording and was concerned that he might critique the food later, potentially harming the restaurant’s reputation. “Main tum logo se dur rehta hoon, mera apna restaurant bahut badhiya hai bhai. Mujhko nahi chahiye tumhare jaise vlogger” (“I stay away from people like you. My restaurant is doing great, brother. I don’t need vloggers like you”), the owner is heard saying.

‘I’ve still got a lot to lose but I’m making my way. I feel stronger and healthier than I have in 10 years, which is a lot. This year I’ve made an active choice. I’ve felt I’ve lacked the discipline a lot,’ he said.

‘When I was out in America its fast food everywhere. I was in a terrible state in the start of the year, and I’ve been able to claw my way back doing light exercise.’

‘I’m a very big fella so heavy exercise would just tear me up. I’m working my way up, thinking about what I eat because that is important,’ he added when speaking to OK!.

Now walking 10,000 steps every day, Jonathan said he’s felt empowered after taking back control of his health.

‘For a long time, I was just experiencing life, letting life live me, trying to find the next pleasure. Taking control of your own life, grabbing the world with your hands, feels amazing,’ he explained.

Despite his once close relationship with Charlotte, Jonathan shared they haven’t spoken in several years.

In 2017 he also spoke about how they’d lost contact during an appearance on Lorraine.

‘We don’t really get to speak very often but that’s the nature of it. You don’t really get the time to speak to your friends, my family comes everywhere with me and they’re my longevity.’

After releasing their debut album, Together, their second, Pherhaps Love was released in 2013.

However, the following year the pair announced they were going their separate ways after each being offered solo record deals.

The singer also once credited BGT with ‘saving his life’.

‘Before then I was suicidal and so depressed that I was self-harming,’ he told the Daily Mail.

‘I’d dropped out of sixth form and my parents wouldn’t leave me alone at home as they thought I’d try to take my own life. I felt so low it is almost impossible to describe. It was like I had nothing to live for – it was the darkest period of my life.’

However, he said ‘everything changed’ the moment he went on the show, and it gave him a ‘purpose’.

In the trailer, Travis appears in a light pink suit as he fills people in on how the game works. He notes that contestants can win “ridiculous money” just by answering questions “about stuff that we all learned back in elementary school.” He appears as his usual warm and friendly self, playing up his self-deprecating humor when it suits him. In one clip, a contestant laments, “I don’t know anything about geography,” to which Travis responds, “Me neither,” earning laughs from the audience.

It seems that Travis won’t be the only one responsible for bringing the laughs on the show, however. The trailer also notes some of the other famous faces that viewers can expect to see as contestants, among them esteemed comedians like Nikki Glaser, Nicole Byer, Natasha Leggero, and Lilly Singh. Beyond these comedic legends, there are several other notable celebrities featured in the lineup, including Sophia Stallone, Chad Ochocinco, Lala Kent, Ron Funches, and more.

Fans Are Worried About Taylor Swift’s Relationship With Travis Kelce Following Her Concert Cancellations

Many have expressed concern that the recent threats against Taylor Swift’s concerts would affect her relationship with Travis Kelce.

As the trailer continues, Travis explains the rules of the game. If a player gets stuck on a question, for instance, they’re allowed to “cheat” off the celebrities. Some of the contestants appear star struck by either Travis himself or by the other celebrities participating in the game, and Travis seems to help keep things light by goofing around. In one clip, he does an awkward dance to a made-up jingle that Nikki Glaser sings. At one point, Nikki jokes that while Travis is an offensive player, she’s “an offensive comedian.”

When someone asks Travis what it was that he studied in school, he comes prepared with his answer:

Criminal justice. If I’m gonna go to school, I might as well learn how to not go to jail.

Occasionally, Travis seems lovably awkward in the trailer, not entirely comfortable in the role yet. When it comes to where to put his hands, for instance, he seems at a bit of a loss, and this results in him doing a copious amount of finger guns at the cameras, drawing even more laughs from the others.
