Waarsa is helmed by Chef Rahul Akerkar and Chef Mukhtar Qureshi – a member of the renowned Qureshi family.     Waarsa is a venture by Aditya Birla New Age Hospitality (ABNAH) and Chef Akerkar serves as its Culinary Director. He highlights how this restaurant manages to challenge certain preconceptions about Awadhi food. “Awadhi cuisine is so much more than the rich, indulgent spreads of the nawabs. The other, often-overlooked side comes from the homes of Awadh – food that’s lighter, simpler, and prepared with fresh, local ingredients.     Many of Chef Qureshi’s contributions are rooted in the personal as well as the historical. The menu reflects his childhood memories of home-cooked meals. For instance, the Habibiya Champ is a recipe from his grandfather’s shop, while the Lauki aur Channa Daal ki Shikampuri is inspired by his grandmother’s cooking. “I refrained from eating vegetables as a child. She used to make this dish for me; it made me love the food and not realize that I was eating bottle gourd,” he reminisces.

    Our meal began with Murgh Dhanewal Shorba, a light chicken soup infused with the goodness of coriander. We relished every spoon despite the unseasonal heat in the city at that time. The Nalli Shorba was equally comforting but boasted deeper flavours derived from the goat shanks. The small plates sections of the menu was daunting in a pleasurable way. It was hard to choose what to order because of the delightful novelty of options. Yes, there were some recognisable staples amongst the tikkas and kebabs. But there were many other niche delicacies that tempted us. For example, we liked the char-grilled Tandoori Dasheri Aloo and the wholesome Kamal-Jhad Shammi. While we have tasted many veg shammi kebabs, this lotus stem version definitely stood out to us. Even the choice of chutneys adds a sense of novelty – each table gets a serving of Dhaniya Lasson ki Chutney, Teekhi Tamatar ki Chutney and Imli aur Munaka ki Chutney.

    Paneer lovers, we highly recommend the Awadhi Tawa Paneer Pasanda. Despite the several dishes that were to follow, we couldn’t help ourselves from eating more of it! Chef Qureshi explained that it has a stuffing made with evaporated milk flavoured with fennel, which gives it a creamy and aromatic twist. Among the non-vegetarian starters, don’t miss the Rampuri Kacche Gosht Ki Tikki. To make it, the chef has chosen to use a very coarse mince and a lot of fresh root herbs, which creates a bold, earthy flavour profile that reflects its Rampuri origins. We also loved the Murgh Gilafi Seekh Kebab, which had a unique texture due to the addition of pine nuts.

    The house-crafted cocktails at Waarsa reflect the delicate balance of flavour exhibited in its food. “We select spices and botanicals with care, choosing those that evoke a sense of nostalgia while offering a fresh twist for today,” says Chef Rahul Akerkar. Also complementing the food is Waarsa’s elegantly understated ambience and decor. Its thoughtful design is the work of renowned restoration architect Abha Narain Lambah. Using Awadh’s architectural language, she has created a space that honours the past and the present. The washed-out salmon walls, intricate ceilings, and subtly ornate furniture create a comfortable yet artistic setting for your meal.

    In the main course, we loved the subtle aromas of the Kashmiri Gucchi Nadir Yakhni, a yoghurt-based gravy with morels and lotus root. We paired it with the Khushka Bhagara Pulao, a wholesome rice dish flavoured with dry fruits and nuts. For a (slightly) spicier option in the mains, we went with the Mutton Kheema Hara Pyaaz – a delightful preparation of coarse mutton mince. We scooped it up with Bakhumaas, a type of sourdough flatbread and one of Chef’s signatures. We also tasted the Ambada Daal Tadka, which ensured we remained impressed with the savouries right till the end. For dessert, we indulged in some yummy Angoori Rabdi and Parde Mein Shahi Khubani. The latter, which is a baked apricot halwa without added sugar, is a must-try. It surprised us with its rich taste without the heaviness we associate with certain halwas.

    Today’s post (#24) covers a collection of issues that I used to believe were age-related but my data demonstrated they were both caused by my lifestyle and were also solvable through my lifestyle. I am picking a few topics that I think may resonate with you: the inability to go back to sleep in the middle of the night, dealing with lower back pain and the curious case of feeling sleepy in the late mornings. Let me explain each of the three:

    1. Inability to go back to sleep in the middle of the night: Those who have known me a long time can attest to the fact that my daily total sleep duration is less than most people. However, as research has now shown, it is the consistency of the sleep start and end times, along with the quality of the sleep stages (deep, REM, light, awake) that matter more than simply judging sleep by the total duration. While about 60% of my nights were good on these metrics, there were 40% where I would wake up in the middle of the night (restroom visit, something on my mind that was bothering me, indigestion, etc.) and I just couldn’t go back to sleep easily. I would toss and turn and finally get frustrated and get out of bed. I made some changes to reduce that 40% by drinking my last glass of water about two hours before going to bed, not being on my phone for 30 mins before bedtime, eating three hours before bedtime, etc. and those things helped bring down the 40% bad sleep nights down to about 20%, but that was still 20% more than it needed to be. Further experiments didn’t help reduce that and I had resigned myself to the fact that I had to live with it. That is, until I read this fascinating blog on breathing techniques and their impact on sleep. Unfortunately I can’t find that blog anymore but I do follow the simple breathing technique it suggested: close your eyes, take a few deep breaths that are about 6 seconds in and the same amount out. Focus on maintaining a consistent breathing pattern. Try to blank out your mind either by picking a single word that you can keep repeating in your mind or by focusing on your breath alone. Don’t stress about your thoughts wandering or getting the counts exactly right because that will work against you going back to sleep. Regular yoga practitioners have this down pat but I needed a bit of practice. And the results were amazing! I would start the process and within ten minutes or less, I would go back to sleep. Now there are very few nights where I am unable to go back to sleep, which are almost always due to the fact that I couldn’t say no to that last slice of cake or ice-cream! I should note that there are other techniques that may work well, such as the popular 4-7-8 technique (inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds and exhale for 8 seconds) but I find that trying to keep a count of all that has been counterproductive for me, especially in the middle of the night when I don’t want a cognitive overload.
    2. Lower back pain: In my case, there have been three very clear reasons for lower back pain: falls during soccer, poor form during a deadlift or a squat and poor posture. The soccer related back pain is usually short lived and I view it as the collateral damage of playing a contact sport, that I am willing to accept. The poor form during strength training was something I have overcome by getting the right guidance from a trainer as well as by not getting carried away with the weights I use. It is now rarely an issue. The last one – poor posture – is something I have to constantly remind myself of. It is not like I don’t know what good posture is all about but when I am not thinking, I find my core collapsing, that leads to rounded shoulders, an arched lower back, protruding abdomen and a tilted pelvis. I visited a posture expert, Dr. Esther Gokhale, at Stanford a few years ago. Based on her personal experiences, she came up with the Gokhale Method that has been published in a book as well as through her workshops and her TEDx talk. There are many fundamental concepts in her approach that are simple but powerful; I am going to simplify it to what I use on a daily basis. Roll your shoulders back which will make your hands feel like those of a dinosaur, stick out your butt, engage your core and your glutes and take deep breaths that feel like you are elongating your spine. This will feel strange at first and you will forget to keep it that way all day but every time you think about your posture, make these changes. Over time this becomes more natural but unfortunately a bad posture requires such little effort and energy that it is easy to fall back into it. The lower back pain is my reminder that it is my posture that I need to work on, and it never fails. The second image above serves as my modeling gig for the year; the bad vs. good image. As you can see, the changes aren’t that obvious between a bad and a good posture but they are critical.  For those interested in learning more about the Gokhale Method, I highly recommend signing up for Esther’s workshops or reading her book.
    1. The curious case of feeling sleepy in the late mornings: I experienced this over the last couple of months where I would feel really sleepy in the late mornings and early afternoons. Initially I thought I was tired because my workouts were more intense or I required longer recovery times from my weekend soccer games or my sleep wasn’t as good but there wasn’t really anything that I had changed dramatically on any of those fronts. Looking at all my data that I had been tracking, I couldn’t find any clear correlation and so my only conclusion kept coming back to “this is what happens in your fifties…”. And then one day in the middle of all this, I didn’t feel sleepy in the late morning, which begged the question what was so special about that day. All of a sudden the reason became clear: I had been taking an anti-allergic (Zyrtec) every morning for years and it had worked well. About 2 months back, I had switched to a generic version which looked like it was essentially the same drug but significantly cheaper. I tracked the starting date of that medication to exactly the time my various markers (resting heart rate, sleep schedules, etc.) changed. The day I didn’t feel sleepy was the one day I had forgotten to take the medication. I immediately stopped taking the generic version of the medication and the results were instantaneous. I was back to feeling like my old self all over again. Post this incident, I have now started tracking my medications through my app so I can pinpoint which medication is having what side-effects. For each of you, there may be other such side-effects of medications you may not have attributed to it and continue to live with it. Hopefully this gives you some food for thought. One of the topics I will dedicate a whole blog post to is the area of pharmacogenomics: the study of how our genes affect our response to drugs, and therefore knowing our genetic makeup can lead to determining which drugs and what dosage, are right for each individual.

    I hope these interventions are useful to those that have dealt with any of these issues. I would love to hear from those that this actually helped or if there is more clarity I should be providing to make the interventions more practically actionable.

Initially I thought I was tired because my workouts were more intense or I required longer recovery times from my weekend soccer games or my sleep wasn’t as good but there wasn’t really anything that I had changed dramatically on any of those fronts. Looking at all my data that I had been tracking, I couldn’t find any clear correlation and so my only conclusion kept coming back to “this is what happens in your fifties…”. And then one day in the middle of all this, I didn’t feel sleepy in the late morning, which begged the question what was so special about that day. All of a sudden the reason became clear: I had been taking an anti-allergic (Zyrtec) every morning for years and it had worked well. About 2 months back, I had switched to a generic version which looked like it was essentially the same drug but significantly cheaper. I tracked the starting date of that medication to exactly the time my various markers (resting heart rate, sleep schedules, etc.) changed. The day I didn’t feel sleepy was the one day I had forgotten to take the medication. I immediately stopped taking the generic version of the medication and the results were instantaneous. I was back to feeling like my old self all over again. Post this incident, I have now started tracking my medications through my app so I can pinpoint which medication is having what side-effects. For each of you, there may be other such side-effects of medications you may not have attributed to it and continue to live with it. Hopefully this gives you some food for thought. One of the topics I will dedicate a whole blog post to is the area of pharmacogenomics: the study of how our genes affect our response to drugs, and therefore knowing our genetic makeup can lead to determining which drugs and what dosage, are right for each individual.

    I hope these interventions are useful to those that have dealt with any of these issues. I would love to hear from those that this actually helped or if there is more clarity I should be providing to make the interventions more practically actionable.

    The Belgian Bullet, 29, has struggled to replicate the exhilarating form that saw him become the Crucible King in incredible comeback fashion in May 2023.

    Over the past year-and-a-half, he has spent a large portion of his £500,000 Crucible winnings, buying flash cars and travelling to glamorous holiday destinations with his partner.

    Yet Brecel, who has seen his weight yoyo up-and-down, now revealed he is keen to take part in one of the toughest things in sport – a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run.

    The world No.6 said: “My big goal in my head is an Ironman in 2028 or maybe 2029. That’s the main focus.

    “To complete it would give me much more of a buzz than winning the World Championship.

    “No disrespect to winning at the Crucible because that was amazing as well.

    “Just to complete it would feel like a win for me. I would love to do it in Hawaii but I don’t mind where it is.

    “I need four to five years to be really sharp for that and my whole life is built around that now. Snooker is the side quest.

    “It’s my goal and I will definitely make it one day. I have always loved running. I used to be a good runner so now I need to build it up again. It’s really tough.

    IF YOU became a world champion of your sport and pocketed £500,000 prize money, how exactly would you celebrate?

    Maybe buy a nice car. Treat the missus. Go on a lavish holiday perhaps.

    Well, Luca Brecel has done all of that and more – put simply, he’s had the time of his life over these past 12 months.

    The Belgian Bullet was crowned King of Sheffield in May 2023 in remarkable fashion, despite no practice and having never won a match at the venue on previous visits.

    Brecel immediately splash £250,000, half of his World Champs earnings, on a stunning red Ferrari 488 – which he admits he NEVER drives.

    He has since lived the high life, exploring the globe with his girlfriend Laura, piling on the pounds with some fine dining and hangout out with an Arsenal star.

    He even lost his Crucible-winning cue.

    “Then my best friend got me into cycling, I have been doing a lot of time on the bike.

    “I want to get good at those first and then perhaps in two years I will start the swimming training.

    “I needed to lose weight – I have lost 11 kilos now and I need to lose more, maybe 10 to 15 more. It would be good to be the first Ironman snooker player.”

    Brecel beat China’s He Guoqiang 4-3 in the first round of the Northern Ireland Open in Belfast on Sunday even though he had flown straight from a holiday in Majorca.

    Despite being ranked 60th on the provisional end-of-season list – a dangerous position if he wants to keep his Tour Card for next season – he had not picked up a cue for THREE WEEKS.

    Yet he returned to the Spanish island and will commute from there for the rest of the tournament, with his next assignment being a last-32 clash with No.27 seed Pang Junxu.

    He said: “People might say ‘he could have won more’ but for me it’s not about winning more, it’s about enjoying it.

    “I do enjoy this game, I love it every time I come to the table. That is the way I want to keep this. But this is the lifestyle I need to have to enjoy it.

    “For me, this is perfect. This is what I have done for my whole career. I like being able to switch off from snooker when I’m not playing and then switch back on for matches.”

    College football picks: Time is not on visitor’s side so far on long road trips in Big Ten

    No. 2 Ohio State at No. 3 Oregon is an even matchup on paper. One intangible would appear to favor the Ducks.

    The Big Ten is now a coast-to-coast conference with its expansion to 18 teams, and early indicators show travel takes a toll.

    Teams playing at opponents at least two time zones away are a combined 1-8 in conference games. Indiana, from the Eastern time zone, won on the road against UCLA for the only victory. Among last week’s losers: Michigan at Washington and Southern California at Minnesota.

    Ohio State coach Ryan Day said he and his staff don’t consider the time change a big deal. Kickoff in Eugene is 4:30 p.m. Pacific, which is a standard 7:30 p.m. Eastern start.

    “I don’t really see it as much of a challenge that way,” Day said. “It’s a four-and-a-half-hour flight, a couple more hours than Nebraska. We’re going to stay on our time schedule. The way the time of the game fits is kind of how we practice. We’re not going to look too much into it.”

    The picks, with all games Saturday unless noted, and lines from BetMGM Sportsbook:

    No. 1 Texas (minus 14 1/2) vs. No. 18 Oklahoma

    The last time Texas entered the Red River Rivalry game ranked No. 1 was 1984, when the Longhorns and No. 2 Sooners played to a 15-15 tie. This one shouldn’t be close. Quinn Ewers is back from injury, Texas has yet to allow 300 yards in a game, and Oklahoma’s offense is a mess.

    Pick: Texas 27-10.

    No. 2 Ohio State at No. 3 Oregon (plus 3 1/2)

    The Buckeyes have rolled over each of their first five opponents, though it took them a while to get going against Iowa last week. Wins haven’t come quite as easily for the Ducks, but Dillon Gabriel and the home field give them an edge in the first top-five matchup at Autzen Stadium.

    Pick: Oregon: 31-27.

    No. 4 Penn State at Southern California (plus 5 1/2)

    The Nittany Lions are the only FBS team to start 5-0 the last four years, and they are riding some momentum after dominating UCLA most of the second half last week. USC has gotten a taste of Big Ten physicality and lost two of their first three in their new conference.

    Pick: Penn State 28-24.

    Mississippi State (plus 33 1/2) at No. 5 Georgia

    Georgia might not be scoring at the rate it was last season, but Mississippi State is allowing 475 yards and 38 points per game against FBS opponents. Georgia also has won 27 straight home games.

    Pick: Georgia 35-3.

    South Carolina (plus 21 1/2) at No. 7 Alabama

    Alabama has experienced incredible highs and lows the last two games and surely is itching to play this game to get rid of the taste of the Vanderbilt upset. This is only the second meeting of the Gamecocks and Crimson Tide since 2010.

    Pick: Alabama 41-21.

    Florida at No. 8 Tennessee (minus 15 1/2)

    Tennessee will be looking to vent some frustration after getting humbled at Arkansas last week. The Volunteers’ offense has regressed the last two games, and the Gators’ defense is coming off its best game against UCF.

    Pick: Tennessee 35-17.

    No. 9 Mississippi at No. 13 LSU (plus 3)

    Jaxson Dart and LSU Heisman winner Jayden Daniels marched their teams up and down the field last year and combined for 104 points and more than 1,300 yards in the Mississippi win. The defenses might want to show up this time. There are huge College Football Playoff ramifications.

    Pick: LSU 28-23.

    No. 10 Clemson (minus 20 1/2) at Wake Forest

    Clemson’s Dabo Swinney looks to improve to 16-0 against the Demon Deacons. His Tigers have been fast starters, having outscored their five opponents 90-0 in the first quarter.

    Pick: Clemson 42-17.

    Stanford at No. 11 Notre Dame (minus 23 1/2)

    The injury bug has bitten another Notre Dame player, with coach Marcus Freeman announcing sack leader Boubacar Traore is out for the season with a torn ACL. Stanford is coming off a 24-point loss at home to Virginia Tech and will be playing its third game in the Eastern time zone in four weeks.

    Pick: Notre Dame 38-10.

    No. 11 Iowa State (minus 3) at West Virginia

    Mountaineers dual-threat QB Garrett Greene and the 1-2 RB punch of Jahiem White and CJ Donaldson could pose a big problem for Iowa State, which leads the Big 12 in defense but hasn’t stopped the run as effectively as some past units.

    Pick: Iowa State 31-27.

    Arizona at No. 14 BYU (minus 5 1/2)

    BYU has been a revelation, already matching its 2023 Big 12 win total (two). The Cougars have returned a punt and kickoff for touchdowns, and their defense has 10 takeaways. Arizona is 124th in punt return defense and coughed up the ball three times at Texas Tech last week.

    Pick: BYU 28-17.

    No. 16 Utah at Arizona State (plus 6 1/2)

    Paging Cam Rising. The Utes have scored a total of 32 points with freshman QB Isaac Wilson the last two games, and mum’s the word on whether Rising will be back from injury for Friday’s game. The Sun Devils will try to get RB Cam Skattebo going. Skattebo busted loose for 180 yards against Kansas.

    Pick: Arizona State 21-20.

    No. 17 Boise State (minus 21) at Hawaii

    Broncos’ Heisman Trophy candidate Ashton Jeanty is only the eighth FBS player to need only five games to rush for 1,000 yards. Hawaii’s two wins are against FCS opponents.

    Pick: Boise State 49-14.

    No. 18 Kansas State at Colorado (plus 4)

    This is a Big 12 game again, and K-State will be making its first visit to Boulder since 2010. The Wildcats have allowed 20 pass plays of 20 yards or longer, tied for 107th. Shedeur Sanders is seventh nationally with 24 passes of 20-plus yards.

    Pick: Colorado 33-31.

    No. 21 Missouri (minus 27 1/2) at UMass

    This matchup prompts a double-take at first glance. It’s the first game of a home-and-home series between the Tigers and FBS independent Minutemen. It’s also get-well week for the Tigers, who laid an egg at Texas A&M.

    Pick: Missouri 42-6.

    California at No. 22 Pittsburgh (minus 3 1/2)

    Pitt is in the Top 25 for the first time in two years, 5-0 for the first time since 1991 and going for its best start since 1982. Freshman QB Eli Holstein is passing for 313 yards per game with 15 TDs. He’ll face a Cal defense leading the nation with 11 interceptions.

    Pick: Pittsburgh 37-28.

    Purdue at No. 23 Illinois (minus 19 1/2)

    Illinois has lost four straight to the Boilermakers. That streak will end unless Illini get caught looking ahead to matchups with Michigan and Oregon the next two weeks. Purdue is floundering on both sides of the ball.

    Pick: Illinois 40-13.
