  • Sorry To The Laundry List Of College Football Teams Hoping To Steal Curt Cignetti Away From The Hoosiers, But He’s Officially Staying In Indiana After Signing A Massive Contract

Sorry To The Laundry List Of College Football Teams Hoping To Steal Curt Cignetti Away From The Hoosiers, But He’s Officially Staying In Indiana After Signing A Massive Contract

So much for a bye week! The grind doesn’t stop! Yesterday Indiana was making waves by announcing coveted recruits committing to the program, and now the Hoosiers drop an atomic bomb on all of us. I’m making my coffee, planning my morning, ready to have a Saturday where football isn’t the main focus, and Indiana decides to cuck the college football world by extending Curt Cignetti’s contract through the year 2032.

Indiana has had the best season in program history, hitting the 10 win benchmark for the first time ever (leaving Iowa State and Vanderbilt as the only power conference schools to not achieve double digit wins.) While Hoosier football fans have tried to enjoy the excitement, the haters have made their voices loud – enjoy it while you can, because Cignetti is GONE after this season. He’ll be coaching the Gators, or the Buckeyes by next season. Well, everyone can shut the fuck up, because he’s staying in Bloomington.

Would you rather be a legend for the rest of time at Indiana, or go to Ohio State and at best be another guy who won a title OR gets run out of town in 4 years for not meeting the fanbases expectations? (shoutout IU basketball) Cignetti chose to be a legend at a place that will appreciate him forever after completely changing the culture of the football program. For what Cig is now getting paid, leaving for another school wouldn’t make sense. His original deal was $4.5 million annually through 2029, but has now been bumped to $8 million annually to 2032. Looking at the highest paid coaches in college football, why not take a few million less to stay at a place where expectations aren’t sky high, but you clearly can be involved in a chance at the national title game? You could maybe argue resources/ facilities, but Indiana has some of the best thanks to Daddy Cuban and the Simons. Indiana has always had money, they’ve just never had a reason to spend it on the football team. AND, the facilities that are already state of the art are only getting better after IU announced a few weeks ago an expansion to memorial stadium.

Side note: maybe my biggest take away from the highest paid coaches list is Brian Kelly is a thief, and I’d much rather pay Cignetti than that red faced fuck Brian Kelly.

After years of disappointment and watching disgusting football being played, I’m still in shock every time I see this Indiana Hoosiers football team play ball. This team actually knows how to play the game. Indiana has had talented team in the past, but absolutely zero coaching. Cig is the hardass the program needed to turn things around. Preaching fundamentals and no one is bigger than the team. Where have I heard that before? Oh, Bobby Knight a man who won with less talent than any of the big name coaches out there. Here’s to hopping Cig is the Robert Montgomery Knight of the football program (with a little less assaulting players.)

Area student athletes take advantage of the start of the early signing period Wednesday

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -Wednesday began the early scholarship signing period for high school student athletes, and several seniors in our area taking advantage to sign on day one of this period.

The folks at Arnold watching nine players in four different sports sign athletic scholarship offers, well over 400 family, friends, students, coaches and administrators on hand for this event. That list of 9 starting with three in softball. Outfielders Justice Taylor and Kaylie Mellies both signing with Reid College, a juco in Evergreen, Alabama. Pitcher Breanna Clark, who owns the strikeout record at Arnold, going Division One with Southeastern Louisiana University. Four baseball signings, the first two, outfielder Austin Hendrix and infielder Josh Lindsey both signing with Gulf Coast, so they’ll stay local. And two pitchers, Eli Blair and Cooper Moss both headed to the SEC, signing today with the University of Florida. Zoey Vandel, coming off her senior season in volleyball, signing with Jacksonville University. And Delaney Sieber, a star swimmer at Arnold, signing a rowing scholarship with Saint Mary’s in California. She’s actually getting a scholarship in a new sport for her. All in all, a big day indeed for these student-athletes their families and beyond! Arnold A.D. and head softball coach Rick Green said this shortly after the signings.

”It’s special for Arnold high school too in that it’s historic, it’s the largest signing class we’ve had, I know in the last 17 years. And looking back, it looks like the last 25 years. And to have five Division I athletes in that group of nine it’s amazing to me. And what I’m so happy about is it’s over a wide spectrum of sports. We’ve got nine athletes in four different sports today. We’ve got more coming in December.”

Meanwhile over at South Walton High School four more signings taking place in the auditorium there Wednesday afternoon. Those four all in baseball, starting with Cameron Tipton-Thomas, a pitcher who signed with Troy. Next up, Frank Wells the Seahawks shortstop, who signed an offer today with Georgia Southern. Then comes Charlie Willcox a pitcher who is off to Georgia Tech come the summer. And number four on the list there Braxton Varnes, another pitcher headed to the ACC, Varnes is off the Florida State University. So a big day for South Walton baseball, four Division One signees who all have their senior seasons ahead of them.

“It’s definitely special for South Walton High School you know to have just four commits from one team.” South Walton A.D. Phil Tisa told us. “Yet alone four D1. And it’s a special day for these young men. It’s the culmination of a decade plus of an athletic career.”

One more signing taking place at Bay Wednesday afternoon. Emily Rollins, a senior striker on the Bay girls soccer team signed a scholarship offer with Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. Emily a four-year starter for the Tornadoes who already has 8 goals in just three matches this season.

  • ‘Olympic dreams just can’t be fulfilled on €25,000,’ says Sarah Lavin after signing new deal to carry her to LA 2028

‘Olympic dreams just can’t be fulfilled on €25,000,’ says Sarah Lavin after signing new deal to carry her to LA 2028

Lavin signed a new contract with Adidas for the new Olympic cycle a few weeks ago which ensures she can remain as a professional athlete. The 2024 World Indoor finalist will now target her third Olympic Games. Lavin received funding of €25,000 under the 2024 International Carding Scheme from Sport Ireland but she says Olympic dreams can’t be sustained on that level of funding without commercial earnings.

“I have re-signed with Adidas so LA here we come. Often after an Olympic cycle, people ask you are you going again? And sometimes it’s not always your choice.

“I remember as a kid watching Derval [O’Rourke] on The Late Late Show and she was talking about how little funding she got and that was 20 years ago,” said Lavin, who launched the Federation of Irish Sport 2024 Volunteers in Sport Awards.

“The highest level of carding is €40,000 in this country and for finishing fifth at a World Indoors you’re on €25,000. You can’t live off €25,000 a year without the commercial input and sponsors. Olympic dreams just can’t be fulfilled at that level. Some athletes don’t even have that.”

Lavin has become a regular finalist at major championships. At the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow in March, she finished fifth in the final of the 60m hurdles. She qualified for the final of the 100m hurdles at the European Championships in Rome in June but she hit the second hurdle and finished in seventh place.

At the Paris Olympics, she finished sixth in her semi-final and Lavin (30) believes her best years are still ahead of her.

“I take huge heart that Derval won a major medal at 33. OK, I’ve just turned 30. I also think given the fact that I didn’t have quite a straightforward career transitioning from a junior to senior, I get a lot of enjoyment out of simple things and if I had that perfect transition I might be slightly bored of it. I certainly am not. I relish every opportunity.

“I think just to have that boost [new contract] is really exciting. Obviously, I wanted to run quicker than 12.6 but I did run 12.6 twice and that is pretty quick on the grand scheme of things and [I was] fifth at the World Indoors this year, ran a PB five times indoors.

“I think heading into next year knowing that there’s a European Indoors, a World Indoors and a World Championships again, three majors. I’m determined.”

Lavin believes it would help greatly if her coach was able to work with her on a full-time basis in her bid to get to the next level. Noelle Morrissey receives the annual funding support of €10,000 from Athletics Ireland but Lavin believes it is inadequate.

“€10,000 is not sufficient to work the 20 hours of contact time that’s required to be a coach at the highest level, and that’s not including the planning of programmes, sessions, travelling,” Lavin added. “I know what I can do, Noelle and I, but we’re doing this on literally bare minimum of support for Noelle.

“In an ideal world, the dream would be that Noelle is a full-time coach. That contact time is really beneficial to us. We’re trying to push everything we can do from a training perspective but it comes down to simple things: time together.

“I fully believe we’re getting closer and closer. My consistency has been getting better and better and I just really want to deliver that major medal.”

  • Arsenal set sights on signing “exciting” player after Edu exit

Arsenal set sights on signing “exciting” player after Edu exit

Arsenal chiefs have set their sights on an “exciting” potential signing for manager Mikel Arteta, with reports coming after sporting director Edu Gaspar announced his departure from N5.

Edu releases statement as Arsenal departure confirmed

The high-ranking transfer chief was responsible for some of their most pivotal signings of the last five years – perhaps most notably current club captain Martin Odegaard for just £30 million and their club-record deal for Declan Rice – with Edu also playing a major role in the appointment of Arteta.

Comfort for Arsenal as update emerges on transfer planning after Edu exit

The Brazilian will be a sore miss, but the club have back up.

Both the Brazilian and Arsenal’s manager worked in tandem as they developed the side from a mid-table team to genuine Premier League title challengers, ending their long hiatus from the Champions League and delivering some major silverware in the process.

However, following a shock exclusive report from journalist Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail, who originally broke the news, it was revealed that Edu would be leaving his post as Arsenal sporting director – a role which he has held since 2022 after being promoted from technical director.

Arsenal’s next five Premier League games

    Date

    Chelsea (away)

    November 10

    Nottingham Forest (home)

    November 23

    West Ham United (away)

    November 30

    Man United (home)

    December 4

    Fulham (away)

    December 8

Later that same day, it was confirmed by the club and Edu himself, with Arteta since breaking his silence on the departure of a key club ally.

“Everything happened very quickly,” said Arteta on Edu’s departure.

“Obviously I loved working with him, I really enjoyed being alongside him on this incredible journey. From day one we’ve been together. First of all I’m very grateful personally for everything he’s done for me, and for the amazing work he’s done for the football club. I think we both had this special chemistry, working together, we really both enjoyed our roles and working together. I’m very blessed he’s been part of my life in such a beautiful place that I am right now, managing this amazing club and he’s been a massive part of that. He’s got an amazing opportunity now to do something else, in a different role and he believes it’s the right professional move for him. We have to respect that, and from the bottom of my heart, everybody really feels that we want the best for him.”

    Edu-Gaspar-Arsenal

Obviously, concerns have since emerged over the club’s transfer planning. Reliable journalist Simon Collings shared a comforting update in this regard, saying Arsenal’s remaining executives can handle major dealings after Edu’s departure.

It was also stated that Arsenal’s transfer groundwork is often done a year in advance, so it appears they could already be prepared for January and next summer.

According to Sky Germany and journalist Kerry Hau, as transcribed by Sport Witness, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson is a man on their agenda in the wake of Edu’s exit.

Arsenal have Larsson “in their sights” to sign, alongside the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham, with the 20-year-old starting this season impressively. The six-cap Swede boasts three goals and an assist from his opening 14 matches, with Hau also calling Larsson an “exciting” player to watch out for.

“Hugo Larsson is one of Eintracht Frankfurt’s shooting stars and is currently one of the most exciting midfielders in the Bundesliga,” he said.

“The 20-year-old Swede has already aroused the interest of several top clubs. According to our information, the Premier League is currently looking at him.

“Some top-class teams, right behind Liverpool FC, Arsenal FC and also Tottenham Hotspur, we hear, have Larsson in their sights, but also one or two Bundesliga competitors.

“Nevertheless, the Frankfurt bosses around Markus Dröschel can sit back and relax, because Larsson feels at home on the Main and that is why he recently extended his contract early until 2029 and, very importantly, from Frankfurt’s point of view, without an exit clause.”

The Reds’ all-time top scorer, Ian Rush, was in the twilight of his career when the Premier League formed in 1992, but still bagged goals for fun. There’s, of course, Luis Suarez, who dazzled the Kop with sensational performances before jetting off to Barcelona. Steven Gerrard, arguably the greatest midfielder in English top-flight history, forged a formidable partnership with Spanish striker Fernando Torres during the latter’s time with English football’s most successful club.

9 Best Liverpool Players to Wear the No. 9 Shirt (Ranked)

Including Robbie Fowler and Fernando Torres, we have ranked the nine best players to wear the number nine shirt at Liverpool.

That said, some have struggled with leading the line for the Merseysiders, especially after big-money moves. One of those is Andy Carroll, who spent three years at Anfield and failed to live up to expectations. The imposing frontman has encountered a rollercoaster of a career that has recently taken its biggest twist. We delve into the former nine-cap England international’s journey from the top of English football to the fourth tier of French football.

    Andy Carroll’s Chaotic Anfield Venture

Disaster struck in January 2011 when Torres betrayed the Anfield faithful and joined Chelsea in a then-Premier League record £50 million transfer. It was a devastating setback for the Reds, who had lost one of Europe’s most reliable strikers.

The onus was on Liverpool’s recruitment team to find a suitable replacement with little time left in the transfer window. They turned to a young Carroll who had been rising through English football at Newcastle United. He was a different profile to Torres, but the Reds pressed ahead and completed a deal for the 6ft4in target man on deadline day. He set the club back a risky £35 million, breaking their and the British transfer record.

The Gateshead-born Englishman had been impressive at St James’ Park, with 11 goals and eight assists for the Magpies until his January move to Anfield. He was immediately under pressure to take the striking baton from Torres, which was a tall order.

25 Biggest Flops in Premier League History [Ranked]

We have seen many an awful player turn out for most clubs in the top flight at one point or another, but who are the biggest flops ever?

Carroll’s tall frame and glaringly contrasting movement and technique to his Spanish predecessor gave him little chance of succeeding. He ran into several injury issues, managing 11 goals and six assists in 58 games for the Merseysiders. The only significant honour of his spell at Liverpool is a 2011 League Cup triumph, which was snuffed out in extra time of the final against Cardiff City. The football world felt that Carroll wanted to stay put at Newcastle, where he’d been a Tyneside hero.

Carroll left for West Ham United in a £15 million deal in July 2013 after an initial loan spell with the Hammers. He’d make 142 appearances, scoring 34 goals and providing 16 assists. A short reunion with Newcastle after this didn’t achieve the same success as his first stint at St James’ Park.

This was when Carroll started losing prominence in English football, soon dropping to the EFL Championship with West Bromwich Albion and Reading. He continued putting in shifts for the Baggies and Royals despite heading into his thirties but expressed his desire for an adventure abroad.

“I had a few good options in England — but I was like: ‘My time in England’s come to an end. I’m satisfied with what I’ve done. I want to challenge myself somewhere else.’”

    From Bordeaux with Love

Carroll took a one-way ticket on the Eurostar and arrived in France with Ligue 2 side Amiens, whom he joined on a free transfer in September 2023. There wasn’t anything to write home about regarding his spell at the Stade de la Licorne, managing four goals and one assist in 45 games. A Carroll career renaissance would come next season at financially punished Bordeaux.

Les Girondins were banished to the fourth tier of French football after a failed takeover that was supposed to mend their financial difficulties. Bankruptcy devastated the six-time Ligue 1 champions.

Carroll took a risk and opted to sign for Bordeaux as part of a project to guide the proud French club back to the elite of French football. He’s made a groundbreaking start for Bruno Irles’ side with five goals in three games. His contributions come on a reported weekly wage of £2,900 a month, working out at £750 per week as he helps the club out on and off the pitch.

“To be honest, it’s even costing me money to come and play for Bordeaux but I’m playing football and I am simply happy to be playing football. I want to be a part of this club’s history and to be frank, it wasn’t a question of money.”

Many would have difficulty believing Carroll’s story. An imposing frontman who floundered at Liverpool in front of 61,276 fans at Anfield went on to reignite his career in the hollows of French football.
