  • Here’s who Bloomington area soccer teams will face in sectionals

    The path to Indianapolis has been set for the state’s soccer teams with the IHSAA sectional pairings announcement on Sunday.

    The Bloomington-Martinsville-Bedford area’s girls teams will compete in sectional play at Terre Haute North (Class 3A) and Cascade (2A) while the boys will compete at Bloomington South (3A), Jennings County (3A), Edgewood (2A), Greencastle (2A) and White River Valley (1A).

    Here’s how the draws lined up locally, with complete brackets available at ihsaa.org:

    Bloomington South (10-3-1), ranked 17th and last year’s state runner-up, gets a short path to the finals, placed in the bottom bracket semifinal vs. Bedford North Lawrence (3-9).

    Up top, Martinsville (7-7) and Terre Haute North (2-12) play in the first-round opener, followed by Bloomington North (5-9) and Terre Haute South (10-3-2). The Patriots topped the Cougars 3-0 in their conference match. Thanks in part to critical injuries, North has just three goals in its last 11 games.

    Syracuse held UNC scoreless throughout the first half, where the Tar Heels put junior goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch through her paces before finally getting one past her twenty minutes into the second half. Vanderbosch made six total saves as UNC outshot Syracuse 17-4.

    Now Syracuse must try to knock off the Demon Deacons, who are 2-1-1 in conference play and currently ranked #5 in the nation. These teams played each other to a 2-2 draw last time they met in 2023.

    Offense comes back to life for Indiana women’s soccer in 3-1 victory over Oregon

    After a disappointing 0-3 start to Big Ten play, Indiana women’s soccer tallied its first conference win Thursday with a 3-1 victory on the road against Oregon. The win pushes the Hoosiers’ record to 6-3-1 on the season, 1-3 in conference play following their first conference road test of the season. 

    The storyline of the match was the resurgence of Indiana’s offense following a disappointing three game stretch that amounted to zero goals.  

    Against the Ducks, the Hoosiers were able to flip the script. Indiana displayed a quantity over quality approach, finishing with 22 shots with just six on goal, converting three of them into goals.  

    Graduate senior defender Avery Snead got the party started with a goal in the 23rd minute. Snead, playing much of the game on the defensive end, frequently pushed in the offensive half. She’s tallied three goals and two assists so far this season.  

    In the 40th minute, sophomore midfielder Elle Britt added to the margin with a goal of her own to mark her third of the season. Britt was incredibly influential all on offense, as she finished with a team high seven shots. 

    The Hoosiers kept the offensive pressure in the second half, wearing the Ducks out with shots throughout the half, while containing the opposing offense. The Hoosiers finished with eight shots in the second half and a goal via freshman forward Layla Sirdah.  

    Sirdah had been neutralized for the first three games of conference play, unable to record a goal or an assist. Since winning Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Sept. 10. She’s struggled against opposing defenses, but against Oregon, she earned both a goal and an assist.  

    The Hoosier defense was practically flawless, allowing five shots with just one on target. This gave senior goalkeeper Jamie Gerstenberg a much-needed night off after facing three potent offenses that tallied 39 total shots in the last three matches. 

    Gerstenberg secured the victory while finishing with zero saves. The one blemish on the defensive scorecard was a goal via penalty kick after a Gerstenberg foul to make it 2-1 Indiana. 

    The Hoosiers will look to build off their reignited offense on the current west coast road trip, as they prepare for this weekend’s match against Washington at 4 p.m. EST Sunday at Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle.

    Nebraska soccer snaps four-game losing streak with win over Illinois | Sports

    Nebraska got back in the winning column after a 1-0 victory over Illinois on Thursday night.

    Near goals were the story of the first half for the Huskers. 

    Within the first minute of the game, junior midfielder Sadie Waite drove down and barely missed a goal. The Huskers came out aggressive. After an out of bounds kick, sophomore midfielder Ella Guyott nearly scored on a header. This soccer team didn’t look like a team that had already lost four straight early on.

    “That was kind of what the game plan was, I think just making sure we played a complete 90 minutes,” senior midfielder Sarah Weber said postgame. “I think in the last four games, we had really good moments, but we weren’t consistent throughout the whole game.”

    Nebraska kept getting good shots on the goal early. With 36 minutes left in the first half, senior defender Jordan Zade had another near goal. Even though the Huskers weren’t getting the ball in the goal early, they kept pushing in the Fighting Illini’s territory. 

    It was only a matter of time until Weber let her presence be known. With 27 minutes left in the first half Weber nearly missed the first goal of the contest. At the 22-minute mark, Nebraska had two corner kicks from junior defender Lauryn Anglim, the first was nearly put in by Waite, but neither resulted in a score. 

    With 13:38 in the first half, the Huskers caught a break when Illinois junior midfielder Mia Howard nearly put the Fighting Illini on the scoreboard, but it went wide right. 

    At the 10-minute mark in the first half, Nebraska sophomore defender Reese Borer made a great defensive stop at midfield. If she would’ve missed, it would have been nothing but green grass for Illinois. 

    At the half, the game was still deadlocked at zero, but the reigning Big Ten champions seemed to have the momentum going into the locker room. Nebraska finished the first half with 12 shots, zero saves, one foul, four corner kicks and zero offsides. Illinois at the half had three shots, three saves, five fouls, zero corner kicks and four offsides. 

    The second half started off with another corner kick by the Huskers, but still didn’t get one in. With 38 minutes left, Weber passed the ball to senior forward Abbey Schwarz but they missed a golden opportunity to get on the board. 

    The Huskers finally got on the scoreboard with a little over 32 minutes remaining with Weber heading the ball in off of a corner kick assisted by Anglim, making it 1-0. These two stars practice this nearly every day.

    “A lot of reps,” Anglim said postgame. “We practice it almost every day. We have specific days that we are just set play and to get a set play goal, It’s good because we do practice it a ton.” 

    Nearly 20 minutes into the second half Schwarz and Weber appeared to be shaken up simultaneously, but stayed on the field until true freshman defender Reese Snowden substituted in for Schwarz. Weber remained in the contest. 

    Schwarz came back in after a few minutes, a good sign for a team that has battled injuries so far this season.

    Corner kick specialist Anglim nearly had another assist, but the Fighting Illini sophomore goalie Izzy Lee stopped it this time with 13:37 left in the contest.

    With 9:30 left in the game, Illinois freshman defender Mia Gildea was shaken up. Weber received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct after the injury. The crowd was not a fan of the foul.  

    The Huskers came out with fire. Even though they only scored one, the aggressiveness from the team stood out. 

    “It was definitely crucial to get back on the board, just to gain some momentum,” Weber said postgame.  

    The final stats for Nebraska consisted of 26 shots, 11 corner kicks, 12 fouls and two saves. Illinois finished with eight shots, zero corner kicks, 10 fouls and nine saves. The Huskers’ ability to get this many shots off was the difference in the game.  

    Nebraska’s offensive power came through tonight, keeping the ball in Illinois territory. The reigning Big Ten champions now have some much-needed momentum.

    “I think showing ourselves that we are capable of what we ultimately know, but to prove it was big for us,” Anglim said postgame.

    Injuries have affected the Huskers this season. Nebraska has had to figure out how to fill the void in the wake of adversity. 

    “Injuries is just an opportunity for other people to step up and make an impact,” Anglim said. It’s unfortunate, but there’s nothing you can do about it, and we have enough depth on the team where they can make an impact.”

    The Huskers will return to action Sunday, where they will take on Penn State in Lincoln.

    A game that saw two ties and three lead changes went the way of the home team on Friday in Chapel Hill, as No. 19 Virginia fell at No. 4 North Carolina by a score of 3-2.

    HOW IT HAPPENED

    The Cavaliers (8-3-0, 1-3-0 ACC) struck first with a penalty kick from Maggie Cagle in the 18th minute, as she had her ankles clipped from behind as she entered the box on the left side to set up the chance.

    North Carolina (11-1-0, 4-0-0) tied things up in the 30th minute when Maddie Dahlien picked up a ball down the left side and sent a centering pass to Linda Ullmark near the spot. Ullmark redirected with her left foot and slipped it in past the left post for the score.

    Virginia took the lead back five minutes later on a goal from Yuna McCormack. Maggie Cagle played a ball ahead to McCormack on the left side that the sophomore midfielder picked up in stride behind the defense.

    McCormack took two touches as she glided into the box and got the one-on-one chance against the UNC keeper. McCormack finished with the shot slotted between the keeper and the left post.

    The Tar Heels returned the favor in the 38th minute with a similar play, as Ullmark played a ball ahead to Kate Faasse on the run. Fassee also got a one-on-one chance and finished her chance to the top center of the goal.

    North Carolina took the lead for the first time in the 74th minute when Ullmark struck for the second time on the evening. She picked up the ball near the top left corner of the box, moved back and to her right to create space against her defender, and sent the shot across and into the side netting by the back post.

    • Maggie Cagle scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season with her penalty kick strike in the first half.
    • The two goals came on five shots for the Cavaliers on the night.

    CAMBRIDGE — Soren Benson scored three goals and assisted on three others as the Lake Region Christian Hornets opened the Cambridge Tournament with a 7-2 victory over the host team Friday, Sept. 27.

    Josiah Wagner scored twice and Josh Bostrom and Raiden Oaks added the other two Hornets’ goals.

    Henry Davis, Brody Kovatovich, Caleb Neubert and Hayden Neubert recorded assists.

    Lake Region’s Ryan Arns finished with seven saves and James Olson collected two.

    Oaks and Benson finished with three goals in the Hornets’ second game, which ended in a 10-1 victory over Willmar.

    Maverick Kuschel scored two goals. Brayden Lind and Kovatovich rounded out the scoring.

    Benson tallied two assists and Brandon Grotzke, Kuschel, Davis, Wagner, Lind and Caleb Neubert each registered an assist.

    The win lands Lake Region in the championship game.

    After the Lions match against Eastern Illinois, Lindenwood sits tied for second in the OVC, with a record of 5-4-1 overall, and record of 1-0-1 in OVC play. Lindenwood also sits second best in the OVC in goals against average (1.20). The Lions are looking to stay undefeated in OVC play against the Cougars of SIUE.

     

    This will be third meeting between both teams. Historically, the Lions have never beaten the Cougars, having an 0-2 record against the Cougars. In the last meeting, Lindenwood fell 1-0 to SIUE.

     

    SIUE sits tied for seventh in the OVC with a record of 1-5-3. In their last match, the Cougars tied the Trojans of Little Rock 0-0. The Cougars are looking to find the winning column after not registering a win in their last seven games.

    Ending it early: Marquette Sentinels boys soccer team slams in 6 goals in 2nd half to invoke mercy rule, defeat Iron Mountain 8-0 | News, Sports, Jobs

    MARQUETTE — Marquette bumped its impressive record to 12-2-2 by ending its high school boys soccer game against Iron Mountain early on Tuesday evening for an 8-0 victory.

    The eight-goal mercy rule was invoked during the second half after the Sentinels pumped in six goals after the halftime break.

    Playing at the Kaufman Sports Complex in Marquette, MSHS’ defense might’ve been as impressive as its offense, since Sentinels goalkeeper Edan Hautamaki didn’t have to face any shots on goals to earn the shutout.

    “Our defense played really well,” Marquette head coach Dan Salmon said in an email detailing the result. “It’s been several games not allowing a goal.”

    Caleb Chipelewski and Henry Wood each had a hand in four goals, Chipelewski notching a three-goal hat trick and adding an assist, while Wood had a goal and a three-assist playmaker.

    In fact, two of Sentinels’ second-half goals were scored by Chipelewski and assisted by Wood.

    “We started slow but got things on track in the second half,” Salmon said.

    Charlie Hrodey added a goal and two assists, while Cody Struck had a goal and assist.

    Wood started the scoring with his goal, assisted by Jack Sysko, while Chipelewski made it 2-0 by halftime on a goal helped out by Struck.

    Seth Sandstrom opened Marquette’s scoring in the second half on a goal assisted by Hrodey, then Struck notched one from Wood to make it 4-0.

    Chipelewski scored his second goal assisted by Wood before Hrodey got his goal on an assist from Chipelewski.

    Finally, the Chipelewski-from-Wood combination worked so well they did it again to make it 7-0, while Jack Pond ended the game with his team’s eighth goal off a Hrodey corner kick.

    After playing at Kingsford on Thursday evening, Marquette is off until Tuesday when the Sentinels host Sault Ste. Marie at 5 p.m. at the Kaufman complex. They also entertain Houghton at 6 p.m. Thursday.

    District tournaments are scheduled to begin Oct. 9, and while brackets haven’t been released on the MHSAA website, it shows that Marquette is in Division 2 in the same district as the Soo, Petoskey, Alpena and Gaylord.

    Local roundup: Warrior Run boys soccer scores two second-half goals to rally past Warriors | News, Sports, Jobs

    After going into the break down 1-0, the Warrior Run boys soccer team rallied in the second half, putting up two goals in the period to defeat Montoursville, 2-1, on Wednesday at Montoursville. Ori Kennel tied the game at 1-1 with an unassisted score 13 minutes into the half before Carter McCormick gave the Defenders the lead just two minutes later.

    For Montoursville, Mason Fry finished with five saves inside the net and Quinn Winslow scored the team’s lone goal midway through the first off an assist from Gavin Hawley. They’ll look to bounce back against Northeast Bradford on Saturday.

    Alex Citrino recorded a hat trick and Kayden Rogers had two goals in a 6-2 win for Wellsboro against North Penn-Liberty. The Mounties’ two goals came from Tate Strange and Brady Stetter.

    “The boys moved the ball well and created goal scoring opportunities,” Wellsboro coach Todd Fitch said. “We’re giving up too many goals on miscues and need to clean that up as we move forward. It was a good win for us.”

    Lewisburg blanked Central Mountain, 4-0, to improve to 9-1-1. Isaac Ayres scored twice in the second half to help seal the game. Alex Gilmore and Cohen Hoover both scored in the first half.

    • On Tuesday evening, Williamsport volleyball was able to pull off a sweep, defeating Shamokin 3-0 with set scores of 25-9, 25-8 and 25-7. Jayden Ulmer played a tremendous game, leading the team in points (12), digs (6) and blocks (2) and tying with Kaylee Smith for first on the team in kills with seven. Belle Morrow led the team in assists with 18 and Kaylee Smith also played a big role, posting six points, five digs and a block alongside her seven kills.

    The Lancers saw similar success against Danville on Tuesday, defeating the Ironmen in three sets by set scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-20. Layla Wetzel led the team in digs (16), aces (8) and assists (18) while also posting seven kills. And Alyson Hughes led the team in kills with 14.

    In a girls tennis match that featured five singles matches and two doubles ones, Central Mountain fell on the road to Altoona, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon. Addison Lindsay garnered the lone point for the Wildcats, pulling off a clean 6-0, 6-0 against Altoona’s Bella Graham on singles court one.

    • Two first-half goals helped regionally ranked Penn State-Harrisburg post a 2-0 win over the Lycoming College men’s soccer team on Wednesday night at UPMC Field. The Warriors (5-2-1 overall) were outshot, 12-9, but held a 3-2 lead in corner kicks and were out-fouled, 19-8. In the net, first-year Jace Bennett made five saves for the Warriors.

    On a rain filled Wednesday night, the Lock Haven men’s soccer team allowed just one score, but that was all that was needed, as East Stroudsburg edged out the Bald Eagles at home, 1-0, in a PSAC East vs. West crossover match. In the net, Ethan Beck made his first career start and finished with five saves in the full 90 minutes. The Haven defense continued its streak of strong defensive efforts.

    • Junior Isabella Bobe notched nine saves to lead the Lycoming College field hockey team against Albright College, as it fell by a score of 4-0 at UPMC Field on Wednesday. Senior Halie Woodring led the Warriors with two shots. The Lions’ Kelsey McTaggart made six saves to earn the shutout.

    The No. 10 Mansfield Mountaineer field hockey team (4-3) held strong to double overtime with No. 5 West Chester (6-2) until the Golden Rams snuck in a late game winner in the second overtime period to take the nonconference battle, 1-0. Pressure from West Chester and the man advantage forced two shots, including a rebound for the Golden Rams to find the cage and earn the victory.

    Standout defense and a clean sheet by Megan Miller led the Lock Haven women’s soccer team to a 0-0 tie at East Stroudsburg in a PSAC East match on Wednesday afternoon. With the tie, the Bald Eagles moved to 1-2-3 overall and 1-2-1 (4 points) in the PSAC East. The tie also snaps an eight-game skid for Lock Haven at the hands of East Stroudsburg. Miller made a game-high 11 saves, and the Lock Haven defense withheld a game-high 26 shots and nine corner opportunities to keep the Warriors off the board and clinch the scoreless-tie on the road.

    • The Mansfield women’s soccer team (0-3-3, 0-3-1 PSAC East) traveled to West Virginia on Wednesday afternoon to face off with the No. 25 nationally ranked Shepherd Rams (4-0-2, 4-0-0 PSAC East). The Rams scored the opening goal in the ninth and never looked back, defeating the Mountaineers, 5-0.

    • Mansfield goalkeeper Alyssa Shuman had 11 saves on the day, tying her career high. And Kerrah Clymer and Taylar Luckenbill recorded the only two shots for the Mounties, with Luckenbill’s landing on goal.

    MEN’S SOCCER: Bulldogs clinch their first win of the season at Sacred Heart

    The Men’s Soccer team (2–4–1) faced off against Sacred Heart University, or SHU, (5–2) on Saturday, Sept. 21, on home turf at Reese Stadium. After struggling to secure a victory so far this year, the game featured an explosive offense from the Bulldogs. 

    At the six minute mark, Aydin Jay ’26 took the Bulldogs’ first shot on goal, but the Sacred Heart goalkeeper found the save to keep the game scoreless. The game would remain that way for another 30 minutes until TJ Presthus ’25 headed a corner kick from Jonathan Seidman ’25 just inside the far post, giving the Bulldogs the lead. Goalie Chris Edwards ’25 kept the Pioneers scoreless through the rest of the first half, securing the Elis’ 1–0 lead going into the second period of play.

    Following the half, Joseph Farouz ’27 worked his way through the Sacred Heart defense before passing the ball over to fellow sophomore, Simon Adjakple ’27, who swiftly found the back of the net, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 2–0. 

    The Pioneers answered only 10 minutes later, with a goal off a rebound that snuck past Edwards, thinning the Bulldogs’ lead to 2–1.

    The Bulldogs on offense, however, were not finished. Fifteen minutes later Farouz fired a shot past the Pioneer’s goalie, extending the Elis lead to 3–1. Five minutes after that, Jay slotted a low shot into the goal, with the SHU goalie diving, but failing to grab the ball. This cemented a 4–1 lead and was Jay’s first career goal.

    At the 81 minute mark, the Pioneers attempted to strike back, but goalie Edwards put a stop to it, and the game saw no more goals. The Bulldogs won decisively, securing their first win after four losses and one tie to start the rocky season.

    “We definitely needed a night like this, and seeing the results of our work as a team will propel us into more solid performances, I know it,” Jay wrote to the News.

    Yale now leads the series with SHU 6–3–3, and the win broke the Pioneers four game winning streak. Yale’s first goal marked the first time the Pioneers had allowed a goal in over 400 minutes, with SHU previously shutting out their last four opponents.

    When asked about takeaways they can apply to upcoming Ivy League play, Alex Umana  ’26 replied, “We’ve learned that no game will be handed to us, regardless of the opponent. It takes hard work, and every match is physical.The team understands that if we mentally prepare and give our all for 90 minutes, we’ll be ready for our Ivy opener against Cornell at home.”

    The Bulldogs mounted an away campaign against Quinnipiac (2–4–1) on Tuesday, Sept. 24, before beginning Ivy League play against Cornell (4–0–2) on Saturday, Sept. 28, on home turf at Reese Stadium.
