Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr has died just hours after his death was incorrectly announced in a statement put out by the college.

Burnett, 20, was pronounced dead on Wednesday at 5:43pm, according to a coroner’s report. Earlier that morning, Alabama A&M had announced Burnett’s death, but the press release was later retracted after the university learned that he was still alive and on life support.

“Our staff acted accordingly to the wishes of the family member to inform the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate occurrence,” Alabama A&M said. “Upon hearing from a representative from UAB Hospital this afternoon, we learned that he remains alive.

The college said it wanted to express its “immediate regret for disseminating false information.”

The college football player was injured on October 26 while he was playing in a game against Alabama State at Legion Field. The injury occurred just a day before his 20th birthday.

His sister, Dominece Burnett, had established a GoFundMe before his death to help pay for her brother’s expenses. The family learned that Burnett had suffered “several brain bleeds and swelling of the brain” resulting from his injury.

“Medrick Burnett Jr., AKA “Meddy,” who plays college football for Alabama AAMU #51, was playing in the Magic City game on October 26, 2024, and was severely injured after a head-on-head collision during the game,” the page says.

On Wednesday, just before his death, his sister posted an update to the page asking for prayers as Burnett was “having a tough time but we are holding on til the very end.”

“God give us strength so we can keep the faith,” she wrote.

Burnett was a native of Lakewood, California, and made seven appearances for Alabama A&M this season, according to Bleacher Report. He was in his first full year with the team after he transferred from Grambling State.

  • Megan Rapinoe defends Barbra Banda with soccer star embroiled in gender row after JK Rowling attack

Megan Rapinoe defends Barbra Banda with soccer star embroiled in gender row after JK Rowling attack

Former United States women’s captain Megan Rapinoe has leapt to the defense of Barbra Banda amid fierce controversy surrounding the Zambia soccer player’s gender.

Banda, 24, is the latest women’s sports star facing questions over her gender after she was crowned BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year over in the UK this week, a decision which sparked outrage given she was left out of Zambia’s Africa Cup of Nations squad in 2022 on ‘gender eligibility grounds’.

It is believed team bosses became aware that the striker’s ‘testosterone levels’ were higher than those permitted by the Confederation of African Football, meaning she was excluded from her country’s squad at the major international tournament.

However, after recently helping OIrlando Pride win the NWSL championship, and scoring four goals at the Paris Olympics with Zambia over the summer, the BBC named Banda as its top women’s soccer star for 2024 earlier this week.

Her victory has been criticized by certain women’s rights groups and members of the soccer community after her exclusion from AFCON two years ago, yet Rapinoe has come out in support of the Orlando forward and congratulated her on winning the award.

In a post on her Instagram story, the World Cup winner shared a photo of Banda with the NWSL trophy and wrote: ‘You’ve thrilled, entertained and inspired us, and the world, all year long. This is so deserved as is every bit of your success. You stand so much taller than the tiny people trying to tear you down.

‘Proud as hell that you’re a womens footballer, pushing the games to new heights. We love you Babs’.

Rapinoe also added: ‘and to all the hateful little people out there hate hate hatin, HOP TF OFF, yall are sad.’

Banda’s award win has proved highly controversial, with author JK Rowling one of many to hit out at the BBC’s decision on social media.

Rowling shared a post on X reporting that Banda had scooped the women’s soccer prize and wrote: ‘Presumably the BBC decided this was more time efficient than going door to door to spit directly in women’s faces.’

The latest gender dispute comes after a turbulent summer involving women’s boxer Imane Khelif, who was accused of being a biological male while storming her way to a gold medal in the welterweight category at this summer’s Olympics.

The controversy came after Khelif was disqualified from the World Championships in 2023 by the International Boxing Associations (IBA) after it was claimed that she failed a gender eligibility test.

However, the Algerian insisted she was a woman and her father even produced her birth certificate which said she was born female.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) repeatedly defended her right to compete throughout the games, while the IBA’s test results and credibility were also called into question.

Earlier this month, a report in French magazine Le Correspondant – which is yet to be confirmed as legitimate – alleged that Khelif has ‘male characteristics’ and XY chromosomes, something she has repeatedly denied.

Appearing on Italian TV shortly after it was released, the Olympic champion attacked the journalist who leaked that unverified medical report and promised to take them to court.

Ricky Gervais reveals why he fell in love with football again – after The Office star ‘went off the game for 30 years’

Ricky Gervais has revealed how he fell back in love with football after a 30-year gap as the comedian joined the Stick to Football podcast.

The comedian featured as a guest on the podcast, joining regulars Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Roy Keane and Ian Wright.

His longevity in comedy was discussed on the podcast, with Gervais quizzed about the success of The Office.

A famous clip from the series had shown Gervais’ character David Brent declare ‘I bloody love football’ as he dribbled a ball around the office.

Gervais was asked about his own love of football on the podcast, with the 63-year-old admitting he had only recently fallen back in love with the game.

The Office and After Life star revealed how watching football documentaries during the Covid lockdowns had drawn him back into the game.

The Office and After Life star revealed he is now hooked on football and watches ‘every game’

Gervais highlighted the Netflix series ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die’ in particular as helping to reignite his love of the game.

‘I do – I love it [football] now. I went off it for about 30 years! I wasn’t anti-football, I played at school, and I actually played football until I was about 30,’ said Gervais, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.

‘Probably from the age of 30 to 60 I gave up on [playing] – I didn’t have a team. I watched England twice a year whenever they were playing.

‘I was aware of everything, but I got back into it in COVID during lockdown, when they were doing those games with no crowd.

‘I got into it so much and then what really got me back into it was a documentary – Sunderland ‘Til I Die. I loved that show – the fact that it was like a religion to them.

‘The whole community was involved, it was a really well-made documentary, then I saw the struggle of the players, the finances, the manager.

‘Then I watched the Manchester City one, the Leeds one, the [Mikel] Arteta one, and I was hooked. Now I’m fascinated with it, I watch every game that is on TV.’

The initial ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die’ series, released in 2018, showed the Black Cats attempts to bounce back to the top flight at the first attempt.

The documentary received widespread praise as it examined Sunderland fans’ support of their club, with the club ultimately suffering a second successive relegation to League One.

A second series followed in 2020, with a third being released earlier this year to chart the club’s promotion back to the Championship.

Former Sunderland director Charlie Methven had become a surprise star of the second series amid his attempts to revive the struggling club.

Methven, speaking to Mail Sport in 2020, had pushed back at comparisons made between him and Gervais’ famed character David Brent in The Office.

The director had been described as a ‘a gentrified Del Boy, who acts a little like David Brent and has the furious, unashamed ambition of Gordon Gekko’.

‘Del Boy and Gordon Gekko are heroes of the 1980s when I grew up, so that was a huge compliment!’ Methven had told Mail Sport.

‘But David Brent… he definitely wants to be liked, and I don’t think that can be levelled at me.’

  • US Olympics star Gabby Thomas signs with Michael Johnson’s new big-money athletics league Grand Slam Track

US Olympics star Gabby Thomas signs with Michael Johnson’s new big-money athletics league Grand Slam Track

US sprint sensation Gabby Thomas has joined Grand Slam Track in a huge coup for Michael Johnson’s new big-money athletics league.

The Olympic 200 meters champion is the biggest signing yet for GST, which launches in Kingston in April before meets in Miami, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

Thomas will race in the 100m and 200m at all four events and could win as much as $400,000 if she tops her short sprints category at each meet.

The 27-year-old is one of the hottest properties in athletics, having won three gold medals at the Paris Olympics – the 200m plus 4x100m and 4x400m relays – and starred in the Netflix series Sprint.

‘This is an incredibly exciting day for all of us at Grand Slam Track,’ admitted GST founder Johnson, the US track legend.

‘Gabby was unquestionably one of the biggest superstars to come out of Paris. For us to bring her excellence, exceptional speed, and tenacious competitive spirit to our league is a huge moment for us.

‘What’s even more important is that this ensures fans around the world will get to see Gabby compete against the fastest women in the world four times a year at our Slams.

‘We’ve been saying it and we mean it – we’re calling all rivals and we want only the fastest. Gabby is a true American hero and one of the most impactful athletes of 2024.’

The other athletes to have so far signed up in Thomas’ category are her 4x100m US team-mate Melissa Jefferson, who won 100m bronze in Paris, and Daryll Neita, the Brit who finished fourth and fifth in the 100m and 200m in Paris.

Thomas is the fifth Olympic champion from the US to join GST after Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Quincy Hall, Cole Hocker and Masai Russell.

‘I am so excited to be joining Grand Slam Track and partnering with Michael Johnson to give our sport the platform it deserves,’ said Thomas.

‘Coming off the Olympics, I want to continue testing myself and competing at the highest level against the fastest women in the world. Grand Slam Track allows us that chance in 2025.

‘Michael’s vision is incredibly exciting, and I can’t wait to give the millions of track fans around the world even more chances to watch us compete. I look forward to seeing all of our fans at the four Slams next year.’

GST have now signed 38 of the 48 athletes who will be ‘racers’ in the first year of the series. Racers are contracted to compete in all four meets and are paid a salary. They will be joined by ‘challengers’, who will participate at individual events and receive set appearance fees.

Winners of each meet receive $100,000, worked out by combining the results of the two races in each category.

World Athletics chief executive Jon Ridgeon told Mail Sport last week that he welcomed Johnson’s series and insisted it was not a threat to their existing Diamond League.

‘It is not a rival to anything we do,’ he said. ‘Our view is that we encourage new money and new opportunity into the sport.

‘We take it as a sign that the sport is in pretty good shape if new investors are looking to come in and add value.

‘All we ask for is new organizers to work with us to make sure dates work as far as they can.’

  • Athlete Spotlight: Handley cross country runner Matthew Doran | Winchester Star

Athlete Spotlight: Handley cross country runner Matthew Doran | Winchester Star

    Handley High School 17-year-old senior

    Sport: Cross country

    Parent: Veronica Doran

    Hometown: Winchester

What do you love about cross country?: The team aspect more than anything else. I just love being able to go out and run with a whole bunch of other people rather than on my own.

Most memorable moment in cross country: Joining the team for the first time in freshman year. It was the first time I really ran in earnest and the first time doing a more centralized team sport.

Most embarrassing moment in cross country: Running poor times at Judges Classic a few years in a row, especially last year. I had a very poor showing. I definitely pulled it together this year at the Judges Classic. (Doran placed 15th in a 3.1-mile time of 17 minutes, 46.03 seconds.) [Before], I think I was not ready for the course and not so feeling so well day of.

Most difficult moment in cross country: Finding ways to overcome the challenges that we faced from injuries last year and this year. This year we lost Will Thomas, so it was hard to keep my team together and make them feel like we still had a good chance of making a good showing of ourselves.

People you can have dinner with, dead or alive: My dad James; he passed away a few years ago. He died before I was really able to get to the point in my running career where I feel like he would have been most proud of me. I felt like we missed out on a lot, and I think it would have meant a lot to him that I was able to finish out this year much stronger and be a good captain to my team. Any of the players from the Washington Capitals, because they’re my favorite sports team. I like all of them. And [British middle-distance runner] Josh Kerr; I like seeing him run and win races. It’s just really enjoyable to see people who are at the pinnacle of the sport.

Biggest athletic influence: My mom. She’s a runner, and she’s the one who made me join the team freshman year, and I ended up loving it.

Favorite teacher: Lenny Vasquez. He’s my [information technology] teacher, and I also had him last year. IT is one of my favorite fields. Right now I work for the city in the IT field. [Vasquez] is the one who taught me a lot of what I know.

Favorite athlete: Washington Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren

    Favorite sports team: Washington Capitals

Favorite movie: “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery”

    Favorite TV show: “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”

Favorite song: “Vengeance” by Blue Oyster Cult

Favorite food: Chicken wings. I like to get them anywhere I can, but Buffalo Wild Wings is a personal favorite of mine.

    Worst thing you’ve eaten: Sauerbraten

Plans after high school: I want to go to the University of Montana, which I just recently got accepted to. I want to learn to become a park ranger. I’m very outdoorsy. I love being outside. The idea of working in the field of nature really interests me, and I love the park system in particular.

  • Vederian Lowe, Dean Lowry, Fred VanVleet, Robert Jones star on 1 day

Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024, quietly may have been the greatest day in NIC-10 history.

No, this was not a day when Rockford West won back-to-back state basketball titles in the 1950s, or Belvidere in the 1990s or Boylan in the 2000s did so in football. This was an alumni day. And while former NIC-10 stars may have occasionally reached a greater height — Fred VanVleet winning an NBA title and making the All-Star team and Jake Smolinski setting a Texas Rangers’ record with eight hits in his first four Major League games immediately come to mind — never have so many done so well at the highest level on the same day.

So this Thanksgiving week, many in Rockford are grateful they can watch Fred VanVleet, Dean Lowry, Vederian Lowe and Robert Jones on their TVs, playing in the NBA and NFL, this country’s two most popular pro sports.

SAS: Who Dares Wins star Ant Middleton has been dealt a ‘major blow’ after receiving bad news about a spin-off of the Channel 4 series.

The military training programme, which started back in 2015, sees ordinary people and celebrities facing tough endurance tasks to prove their mettle to Ant and the show’s other chief instructors.

Ant was involved with the Channel 4 show between 2015 and 2021 but hasn’t appeared since then, instead focusing on the spin-off SAS Australia.

SAS Australia started in 2020 and looked set to continue with a fifth season in 2025, with Ant promising that the series ‘will be coming back’ amid rumours of casting calls.

However, sources have claimed that the fifth season may never reach TV after discussions and negotiations between Screentime and Channel Seven in Australia apparently broke down.

It’s reportedly come as a surprise that no filming will have been completed for season five before the end of 2024, and the show was apparently absent from Channel Seven’s 2025 line-up announcement.

The future of SAS Australia is apparently up in the air (Picture: Samir Hussein/WireImage)

Its rumoured cancellation has come as a surprise after 1.85 million people tuned in to watch the 2023 finale (equivalent to almost five million viewers in the UK).

According to MailOnline, insiders have indicated that the show’s future may lie elsewhere, with Australia’s Channel Nine apparently showing interest.

But negotiations and interest offer no guarantees, and production on a fifth season apparently fizzling out behind the scenes is a major blow to SAS Australia’s future.

And it appears to go against all indications that Ant gave about the series earlier this year, when it seemed certain a fifth season would be greelint.

He told Yahoo Lifestyle back in August: ‘Of course we’re coming back, SAS Australia’s gone nowhere. You’ve heard it from the horse’s mouth.

‘We just need to make sure we’ve got the right cast, that we’ve got the right location, and with SAS Australia you can’t rush it.’

He continued: ‘You can’t just go, “Right, we need to do it every year” because it’s about getting things right, it’s about keeping it authentic and keeping it real and keeping it raw.

‘We need the right cast, we need the right location, and we need the right production company on board.’

Ant had previously told The Express that a fifth season of SAS Australia was very much in his plans, with his personal search for a new cast apparently under way.

‘I’ve already got a few names in mind. [Actor] James Stewart, or [singer] Samantha Jade – she’s like a little pocket rocket. I can just picture her going full throttle.’

A seventh series of the original British version of the show has been commissioned by Channel 4, with filming already having taken place in Wales over the summer of 2024.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Ant Middleton for comment.

Top radio star is slammed for his ‘disgusting’ reaction to Aussie men’s sport team performing a seemingly innocent dance before a match

    • Ben Dobbin slammed the Aussie men’s netball team’s dance
    • Aussie side’s routine has divided sports fans across the internet

A Triple M radio host has been criticised for describing the recent viral dance performance from the Australian men’s netball team as ’embarrassing’ and ‘disgusting’.

The Australian men’s netball team stunned viewers a week ago with the side’s pre-tournament dance performance on the opening day of the Fast5 series in Christchurch.

The national team, known as the Kelpies, got the crowd on their feet before their first match with their dance routine to NSync’s Bye Bye Bye.

The controversial routine has since gone viral, notching up millions of views online with fans divided over if they like it or not.

One person who wasn’t impressed was Triple M host Ben Dobbin, who didn’t hold back on Brisbane drivetime show The Rush Hour last week.

‘I understand if you’re from New Zealand and you do the haka,’ Dobbin said

‘I don’t understand if you’re Australian and whoever gave you the name the Kelpies …’

Co-host Leisel Jones butted in: ‘It’s brilliantly, ironically Australian.’

‘Well I’m sorry, playing men’s netball isn’t iconically Australian,’ Dobbin said.

‘I’m being honest here. I’m appalled by this. These blokes, seriously, take a look at yourselves.

‘Male netball does not have a place for Backstreet Boys.’

Co-host Liam Flanagan interjected: ‘To be clear, this is Triple M, not 4BC. What are you upset about? Men playing netball, or the dancing?’

Dobbin replied: ‘Both. I’m more upset about the dancing. You’re representing our country and you’ve got Backstreet Boys doing this sort of hip hop dance before you go to represent our country.

‘I’m sorry. It’s a gimmick. They made the headlines but for all the wrong reasons.’

The Kelpies went on to win the entire tournament, beating New Zealand 32-30 in the final

Jones chimed in: ‘Should the Kelpies have gone to the Olympics instead of Raygun?’

Dobbin wasn’t finished: ‘They’re of the same ilk. These blokes, they should be ashamed. And I mean that genuinely.’

Flanagan said to Dobbin: ‘So, did you have a problem that the women did it? Every team was directed by the tournament organisers to perform before their first game of the tournament.’

Dobbin replied: ‘Well, they’re not sheep, they don’t have to do that.’

Flangan asked: ‘Don’t you think it would be poor form if the tournament is like, ‘Hey, this is like T20 cricket, we’re trying to build a fast-paced, exciting atmosphere’. The crowd lost their marbles over that.’

Dobbin said: ‘Dance to Horses or Working Class Man, not the Backstreet Boys. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, this is disgusting. Mate, it’s embarrassing.

‘Daryl [Braithwaite] does it at every Cox Plate, there’s no dramas with that.’

Dobbin has since been criticised for his remarks on social media.

‘Imagine being angry at people dancing and enjoying themselves,’ replied one social media user.

‘Oh no, young men are enjoying themselves,’ posted another.

‘Dancing is part of the tournament, you absolute pelican,’ commented a third.

A fourth posted: ‘Sounds like this is disrupting someone’s long held beliefs of what it is to be a man. Grow up.’

The Kelpies went on to win the whole tournament by beating New Zealand 32-30.

Matildas star Cortnee Vine shocks fans by taking an indefinite break from soccer due to mental health worries

    • Australians are returning home for two friendly matches
    • Will be without several big name players for the clashes
    • Includes World Cup star who became a household name

World Cup hero Cortnee Vine is taking a break from football to focus on her mental health.

On Friday, Vine was once again a notable absentee in interim coach Tom Sermanni’s extended squad for the Matildas’ upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Taiwan after making herself unavailable for selection.

The dashing winger was a star of the A-League Women competition but catapulted into the national spotlight when she scored the winning spot-kick in Australia’s marathon penalty shootout win over France in the Cup quarter-final.

Vine, 26, has missed multiple recent camps for personal reasons, while also attempting to settle into life at NWSL club North Carolina Courage, who she joined from Sydney FC in the off-season.

‘I’m sure many people can appreciate that my life has dramatically changed over the past two years,’ Vine said in a statement provided by her management.

‘Due to these very new and sometimes overwhelming experiences, l’ve discovered that identifying, managing and prioritising my mental health has become something I have needed to work very hard on.

‘Like many who face mental health challenges, I have my good days and my difficult ones, but every day is a lesson in learning to find the right balance.

‘For now, I need to focus on taking care of myself, which is why I am taking some time off.

‘I truly appreciate everyone’s support and concern, and I’m confident I’ll return stronger than ever.’

Seven uncapped players and eight with 10 caps or less have been selected in the 36-strong squad for two games against Brazil, in Queensland on November 28 and December 1, and two against Taiwan in Victoria on December 4 and 7.

The first game, in Brisbane, is retiring veteran Clare Polkinghorne’s celebration match, while Emily van Egmond is due to earn her 150th cap.

Tottenham winger Hayley Raso is back from a hamstring injury while goalkeeper Teagan Micah returns from an ankle issue. Chloe Logarzo, Emily Gielnik and Alex Chidiac have all been recalled.

Not all players will assemble for the entire camp.

Sermanni hopes to field teams with a mixture of established stars and less experienced counterparts.

‘There’ll be players playing in the initial two games and then there’ll be some going back, some staying on, and then players coming in for the second two games,’ Sermanni said.

Sam Kerr won’t be involved as she continues her recovery from an ACL tear.

‘Things are getting a little bit better in rehab, but in reality it’s still probably a 12-month injury,’ Sermanni said.

    Kaitlyn Torpey (hamstring) is unavailable.

Isabel Gomez, Leah Davidson, Natasha Prior and Hana Lowry are among those rewarded with maiden call-ups.

Melbourne Victory captain Kayla Morrison isn’t included as her eligibility switch from the United States hasn’t gone through, with Football Australia waiting on FIFA.

Sermanni again stressed he was prepared to be in the interim role for as long as needed as FA’s hunt for a permanent full-time coach continues.
