Inclusive Ipswich athletics club shaping future sport stars

Morgan, 14, is hoping to compete in more wheelchair races next year as he undertakes his first winter training with Orwell Panthers

Offering equal opportunities to people with disabilities is crucial – and one athletics club is going above and beyond while shaping rising sports stars.

Orwell Panthers Athletics Club in Ipswich was set up 20 years ago to offer a group for those with physical and mental disabilities.

The club, which today has 19 athletes, meets on Wednesday evenings at Northgate Sports Centre.

There is no pressure on the athletes to compete, but for 14-year-old Morgan, he is hoping to take on more wheelchair races next year.

    ‘Like a community’

Several members of the club gathered at the Northgate Sports Centre during a recent training session

Morgan joined just three months ago and works hard during each training session.

“I joined because I wanted to get back into wheelchair racing and what I’ve done over the last three months is fantastic,” he explained.

“What the club has given me as well is fantastic. I’m looking forward to spending more time here.

“I’ve improved in racing wheelchair, I’ve improved in some other sports they do here and when I came here I couldn’t do most of that, so I’ve got to say thank you to the club.”

Morgan said the group was like a community and had helped him make new friends.

    ‘The club is helping lives’

John Fairhall/BBC Ian Ling smiles at the camera while standing in a sports hall. He is bald and wearing glasses. He is wearing a black jumper. Some club members can be seen pictured behind him talking with each other.John Fairhall/BBC

Ian Ling said the club was open for anyone from the age of eight upwards with disabilities regardless of if they wanted to compete or not

Ian Ling has been the lead coach at the club for the past six years and said every athlete had their own personal reason for attending.

“Some will come here because they want to do athletics, some will come because it’s another social event to do,” he said.

“[There’s] loads and loads of enjoyment and hopefully smiles on their faces while they’re doing it and smiles when they leave.

“That then puts a smile on my face and if they come back week after week then obviously I’m doing something right.”

Mr Ling said finding inclusive clubs was often difficult locally.

However he believed Orwell Panthers was “helping lives” and encouraged anyone to come along, even if they did not want to compete.

“We’re hopefully making their lives more enjoyable and giving them something fun to do,” he added.

    ‘We all have laughs’

Rhys Ford said he was nervous when he first joined the club but the coaches had helped him improve

Rhys Ford, 21, travels from Leiston to join the club’s training sessions.

He has been with the club for a couple of years and enjoys competing in the long jump, 200m sprint and the relay race.

Asked why he liked coming to the club, he said: “[It’s] just the atmosphere and getting to see new people, making new friends and just enjoying it.

“[Everybody] is very friendly and very caring. We all have laughs.”

Mr Ford said the coaching team were “really supportive” and he had seen great improvement in himself – leading to several competition wins.

    ‘I love the jumping’

John Fairhall/BBC Fabrienne smiles widely at the camera while standing on the athletics track. She is wearing a purple coat with a black jumper and red polo top on underneath. She has long brown hair which has been tied up behind her head.John Fairhall/BBC

Fabienne found huge enjoyment in being a part of the club and loved the training on the track

Fabienne, 10, has just started with the club and her favourite thing is the new friends she had already made.

She enjoyed the running element and said she liked to run “really far”.

“I love the jumping,” she added.

“I’ve done one competition. It was a really big competition with lots of people, I won three gold medals in running, throwing and jumping.”

She thanked the coaching staff and wider team for their support since she joined.

    ‘Different opportunities’

John Fairhall/BBC Matthew Foulger smiles at the camera while standing in a sports hall. He is wearing a red polo top.John Fairhall/BBC

Matthew Foulger specialises in disability throwing and also helps to officiate at competitions

Matthew Foulger, 30, is one of the assistant coaches.

He has been in the role for four and a half years and a member of Orwell Panthers for 20 years.

He specialises in disability throwing and has coached the athletes through other track events like shot put. Mr Foulger also helps officiates at competitions.

What kept him coming back was “seeing all the athletes progress and having different opportunities to compete in abled body competitions, disabled body competitions, and worldwide”.

    ‘I can switch off’

John Fairhall/BBC Hamish Crawford smiles at the camera while standing in a sportshall. He has short brown hair and is wearing a black jumper with a red polo top on underneath.John Fairhall/BBC

Hamish Crawford was inspired to join the club in 2012

Hamish Crawford, 20, has been coming to the Orwell Panthers for 12 years after he was inspired by the London 2012 Paralympic Games – and British wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft.

“Hannah Cockroft got me thinking, ‘I want to do that’, and I’ve competed at Lee Valley and a few other places,” he explained.

“It gives me a bit of down time from college work because college work is quite busy.

“It’s one of the things where I can just switch off, talk to my friends, coaches and talk about football as well.”

He said the club was brilliant at helping get “people with disabilities active”.

  • Meet Max Greyserman’s Tennis Star Wife Alyssa: Lifestyle, Career & More About PGA Tour Star’s Support System

Meet Max Greyserman’s Tennis Star Wife Alyssa: Lifestyle, Career & More About PGA Tour Star’s Support System

Everyone needs to lay their head on a shoulder after a long day and for Max Greyserman that supportive shoulder is his wife’s. The golfer’s summer was filled with impressive showings, finishing T31 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, T26 at the John Deere Classic, T21 at the Genesis Scottish Open, T13 at the Barracuda Championship, and a solo second finish at the 3M Open. However, his chance at capturing his maiden PGA Tour title at the Wyndham Championship slipped away after a disastrous quadruple-bogey eight on the 14th hole, ultimately losing by two shots to Aaron Rai.

But how does Greyserman deal with all the stress that comes with fame? Well, according to the golfer his wife plays a major role in his life for the support she provides during the hard times. Alyssa Greyserman is the wife of PGA Tour star Max Greyserman and is a talented professional in her own right. She works as a product manager for Spotify, bringing her skills and expertise to the music streaming giant.

Mrs. Greyserman met the golfer while attending Duke University, where they discovered their shared passion for tennis. Both were college tennis players, following in the footsteps of Greyserman’s mother who also loved playing tennis. The couple’s love story blossomed on and off the court which eventually led to their marriage. Now the pair resides in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, with their dog. While Alyssa keeps her Instagram account private, it’s clear she’s a supportive partner, often attending Max’s golf tournaments.

As Greyserman’s career soars, his wife remains his rock, providing love and encouragement every step of the way.

Max Greyserman’s father advised him to hug his wife after a heartbreaking career loss

Max Greyserman reflected on his disappointing finish at the Wyndham Championship, revealing words of wisdom from his father that helped him put things into perspective. Greyserman’s father texted him Sunday night, reminding him that setbacks are inevitable at the highest level. His father emphasized that misses and frustrations hurt more as the level of competition increases, a phenomenon that also occurs in life and business. “My dad texted me Sunday night. He said the higher level you play at, the more misses and frustrations will hurt. Happens in life and in business all the time. It will happen to you many more times. Great playing. Hug Elisa, pet Lily, and move on”, he said.

Greyserman appreciated his father’s support, acknowledging that his family and friends have his back. “I know my parents have my back, my friends and family have my back. So it was obviously a difficult day. He recognized that their unwavering support helped him cope with the difficult day. Greyserman also found solace in knowing that even golf legends like Rory McIlroy experience tough days, such as at the US Open and Masters. “But, like he said, Rory had a tough day at the US Open. You know he’s had a tough day at the Masters back in the early 2000s and 2010s.”

Greyserman understood that success and setbacks go hand-in-hand at the top level. He recognized that not everyone can consistently perform like Scottie Scheffler. With his father’s words of encouragement, Greyserman is ready to move on and continue striving for excellence. “If the higher level you go, the more that’s going to happen, just as much as the success has happened too. So, not everyone can just play like Scotty”, he continued. Now, we all understand

  • Real Madrid Blocks First Team Star’s Expected January Exit

Real Madrid Blocks First Team Star’s Expected January Exit

Struggling Real Madrid has blocked one of its first team players, who has at least two potential suitors, from leaving the club in the upcoming January transfer window according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources.

Dani Ceballos joined Los Blancos in 2017, and, with a loan spell at Arsenal wedged between, renewed his contract until 2027 when it was approaching expiry in summer last year.

This warded off several clubs interested in signing the 28-year-old for free. But the arrival of Jude Bellingham in mid-2023 from Borussia Dortmund resulted in the Andalusian having even less prominence than before.

During the current campaign, Ceballos has managed just 110 minutes spread across six appearances – one as a starter and five as a substitute – and there are reportedly at least two outfits willing to give him more playing time.

These are namely his boyhood club Real Betis and Real Sociedad. Yet according to SPORT, Madrid will block any potential exit and doesn’t even want to listen to proposals that come its way regarding the former Premier League star.

Though used sparingly by the Italian, Ceballos is considered a useful resource for head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who offers something different to most of his midfielders – especially in terms of physicality.

Ancelotti is struggling to find the right balance in his side which hasn’t managed to compensate for the loss of Toni Kroos after the German announced his shock retirement leading up to a 15th Champions League win at Wembley achieved against Borussia Dortmund back in June.

Any January reinforcements greenlit by President Florentino Perez are likely to be made in defence, where Ancelotti needs another center back and perhaps a right back with Dani Carvajal out injured for the rest of the season.

It wouldn’t make sense to further deplete midfield, where Aurelien Tchouameni is struggling with injuries and Ancelotti can’t currently get the best out of Bellingham and Fede Valverde because of the ripple effect that Kylian Mbappe’s arrival from Paris Saint-Germain has caused.

Notching his 153rd appearance during the 3-1 UCL loss to AC Milan on Tuesday, Ceballos might be rewarded playing time at home to Osasuna in La Liga this weekend.

‘But I said, “don’t worry I’m gonna be fine because I put this dress on myself so I damn well should be able to get it off”.

The star was wearing a cream fluffy jacket featuring pink star details, which she managed to get off without issue.

She reached around to the back of the dress and added: ‘I’m quite confident that I should be able to do this without the assistance of a strange gentleman, so let’s see.

In August, Vanessa admitted she finds the ‘crushing solitude’ of being single difficult to navigate following her split from Ben.

The star has been single since the breakup but has gone on plenty of dates, most of which appear to have been unsuccessful.

Writing in her Express column, Vanessa candidly admitted she has struggled with feeling lonely after having had a partner for so many years.

She wrote: ‘I’ve been so lucky to holiday in Spain with my grandchildren, but returning to an empty house feels bleak after days of fun and laughter.

‘I’m a reluctant singleton. I try to muster some backbone, but I don’t like it. I’ve found the contrast between the togetherness of family 24/7 to crushing solitude tough to navigate. My heart goes out to all those in the same boat.’

After the glamorous event, Vanessa opened up on one of the ‘perils of being single’ as she attempted to get out of a figure-hugging red ballgown by herself.

Despite getting offers from ‘kind gentlemen’ who wanted to accompany her home to ‘make sure she wasn’t stuck,’ Vanessa opted for independence and wanted to do it by herself.

She documented the experience in a video she shared with her 399,000 Instagram followers after the glitzy event.

Filming herself in the mirror, she said: ‘I’ve just come from the London Lifestyle Awards and I was amazed how many kind open-hearted gentlemen offered to accompany me home, just to make sure that I wasn’t stuck in my dress.

‘But I said, “don’t worry I’m gonna be fine because I put this dress on myself so I damn well should be able to get it off”.

She continued: ‘So now is the moment of reckoning so let me start by moving this beautiful jacket. Right so that was easy to do that.’

The star was wearing a cream fluffy jacket featuring pink star details, which she managed to get off without issue.

‘The ballgown you can see is fairly straightforward,’ she continued: ‘but this actually has a zip at the back which I did up by myself.’

She reached around to the back of the dress and added: ‘I’m quite confident that I should be able to do this without the assistance of a strange gentleman, so let’s see.

‘And low and behold I can remove the dress – I mean, I won’t do it with you watching, but I could if I wanted to.’

Vanessa wrote in the caption: ‘The perils of being single part 9. Thanks guys. I think I can undo this one on my own! #zip #undo #fashion #dress #vanessafeltz #vanessabaresall #single #diy #allbymyself’

  • Christian McCaffrey, Fantasy Football Stars Who Could Carry You To The Playoffs

Christian McCaffrey, Fantasy Football Stars Who Could Carry You To The Playoffs

Fantasy football just hasn’t quite been the same this year without star running back Christian McCaffrey in lineups across the nation. The San Francisco 49ers starter has missed the team’s first eight games with Achilles tendinitis in both legs. The good news is that he’s expected back for Week 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and if he can stay on the field down the stretch he’ll be a boon to fantasy football general managers angling for a playoff push.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, appearing on The Pat McAfee Show Monday morning, gave a report that bodes well for McCaffrey’s status. Schefter said, “I haven’t heard that there’s been any issues for Christian McCaffrey.” He also noted that “As long as there are no setbacks I think that he’ll be playing on Sunday against the Buccaneers.”

Here’s a full clip of the interview in which McAfee and Schefter discus McCaffrey’s health and availability:

Shortly afterward, the 49ers opened up the practice window for McCaffrey to return, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Christian McCaffrey Is A Fantasy Football Demigod When Healthy

There are few players who can consistently rack up mountains of points every week in fantasy football. McCaffrey is one of them, and he’s coming off an incredible season for the 49ers.

During the 2023 NFL campaign, McCaffrey totaled 2,023 yards and 21 touchdowns from scrimmage. Thanks to his consistent work in the 49ers passing game, McCaffrey led all NFL players with an average of 24.5 points per game in PPR leagues, per ESPN Fantasy Football.

He’s an integral cog in the Kyle Shanahan scheme, and clearly the 49ers have missed McCaffrey’s presence in the lineup so far in 2024. Assuming he can stay healthy and doesn’t have another setback with his Achilles tendinitis, McCaffrey is going to save some fantasy football teams, and he’ll send others to the title.

Here is a look at a few other players who are set to have a strong second half of the 2024 season and carry you to the fantasy football playoffs.

Isaiah Pacheco Is Targeting A Late-November Return

The Kansas City Chiefs just continue to win, despite not having running back Isaiah Pacheco, who has been out since fracturing his fibula in Week 2. It’s only going to get better for the repeat champs, because the latest reporting, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, indicates Pacheco will return to the starting lineup in late-November.

Though not in the same league as McCaffrey in terms of fantasy football production, Pacheco is going to likely be leaned on heavily once he returns to the lineup for the Chiefs. His replacement, Kareem Hunt, is averaging just 3.7 yards per carry, and the team’s running game overall is under 4 yards per carry this season.

Combined with Patrick Mahomes’ rough experiences as a passer, it sets up a big final couple of months for Pacheco to become the team’s workhorse.

Nico Collins Will Be WR1 For The Houston Texans

The Houston Texans have suffered some big hits on the injury front lately. They lost Stefon Diggs for the season, and Nico Collins has been on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Without his top-two star receivers, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud struggled to get anything going in his last game against the swarming New York Jets.

The good news is that Collins is reportedly “ready to go” for his return to action in Week 10 when the Texans take on the Detroit Lions. It’s going to likely be a high-paced, high-scoring affair if the Texans can keep up with the red-hot Lions.

That means a lot of work is in store for Collins, who will come in as the undisputed No. 1 wide receiver for the Texans down the stretch. Before getting injured, the former Michigan star was having a phenomenal campaign, catching 32 passes for 567 yards and 3 touchdowns in five games.

Ladd McConkey Is Coming On Strong For The Los Angeles Chargers

Don’t look now, but Justin Herbert and Ladd McConkey are starting to develop some extremely good-looking chemistry. In the process, Herbert is throwing the ball more often for the Los Angeles Chargers than he did in the first handful of weeks this season.

On Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, McConkey led the Chargers in both target share (25.9 percent) and routes run. He finished the game with a team-leading five catches for 64 yards, playing a position-high 48 snaps in Los Angeles’ 27-10 victory over Cleveland.

It wasn’t quite as dramatic as the fantasy football production we saw from McConkey in Week 8 when he racked up 6 catches, 111 yards, and 2 touchdowns. But it was proof that McConkey is going to be the focus of the Chargers’ passing attack going forward. That’s great news for his development, and for the fantasy football general managers smart enough to have him in their lineups.

Incoming Man United boss Ruben Amorim ‘could raid Sporting Lisbon for THREE stars next summer in £175m swoop’ – ‘with chiefs at Portuguese club expecting him to try and poach players’

Ruben Amorim could try to bring three players with him from Sporting Lisbon after touching down as Manchester United manager.

The Portuguese begins work at Old Trafford on November 11 after United reached an agreement to pinch the two-time Portuguese league champion.

And despite predecessor Erik ten Hag facing much criticism for signing his old Ajax pals, Amorim could look to do the same next summer.

He has ruled out making any bids for Sporting stars in January but could try and load his trolley with three aces next summer.

The Sun reports that United could splash £175million on a striker, centre-back, and central midfielder and that Sporting chiefs expect the raid.

Midfielder and staunch Arsenal fan Morten Hjulmand completes the trio Amorim could pinch

It is no surprise to hear the name of Viktor Gyokeres among the trio. The former Coventry forward hit 43 goals last season and already has 18 this term.

Gyokeres, 26, has a release clause of £84m and has refused to rule out a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal also named among his suitors.

‘Going with Amorim to Man Utd? I don’t know… I’m here,’ he said.

‘As you can see, I enjoy it at Sporting. It’s nothing I think about. I’m just sad about him (Amorim) leaving. We wish him all the best.’

Alongside Gyokeres, United could approach centre-back Goncalo Inacio, 23, and midfielder Morten Hjulmand, 25.

United were already targeting Inacio over the summer, according to Portuguese outlets Record and O Jogo. Arsenal were also reported to be keen on him in December 2023 and he has a reported release clause of £51m.

Inacio has won two Portuguese league titles, two League Cups, and a Super Cup since stepping up to Sporting’s first team in the 2020-21 season. He has also amassed 12 caps for Portugal and featured twice at Euro 2024.

While he is principally a central option, Amorim has also deployed him at left-back.

Meanwhile, Hjulmand has been touted as a ‘replacement for Casemiro’ although he has a long way to living up to the Brazilian’s pedigree.

He has won one title with Sporting after spending the last couple of seasons with the Portuguese giants. The Dane started his career with Admira Wacker in Austria before joining Lecce in Italy.

The Sun claims that he would cost around £40m.

Hjulmand scored a stunner at Euro 2024 against England.

However, there is one detail United should be cautious of. The midfielder is a lifelong Arsenal fan and even has a tattoo of the club’s crest on his upper left arm.

If Sporting are fearful of Amorim’s departure derailing their season, they may take a crumb of comfort in his assurances that he does not want to poach stars in January.

‘I’m not going to get any players from Sporting in January,’ he said.

‘Gyokeres costs 100 million (euros) and it’s very difficult.’

Adina supports next generation of Australian sporting stars with community hockey series

Hockey’s next generation of superstars flocked to the Melbourne Sports Centre over the weekend to meet their  heroes and learn the skills and drills as part of the popular Adina Community Hockey Series.

Adina’s Community Hockey Clinics were first launched at the Brunswick Hockey Club last year as a way to connect kids with their favourite hockey heroes. Clinics have since been staged in Western Australia as part of the Perth International Festival of Hockey; and in Melbourne, with the next slated for Sydney in February 2025.

“Adina’s partnership with Hockey Australia really resonates with our core values of community, family and a shared sense of belonging,” TFE Hotels’ CEO Antony Ritch said.

Adina Supports Next Generation of Aussie Hockey Players with Community Clinics

Hockey Australia Chief Executive Officer David Pryles says the initiative is vital for the longevity of hockey in Australia.

“Hockey Australia was delighted to run another of these highly successful Adina Community Clinics in Melbourne and on the very pitch that hosts our top players in the Hockey One League,” he said.

“I want to thank Adina Hotels because it’s with their support that we’re able to send our hockey heroes into communities across Australia.”

More than 100 hockey kids joined top players from Hockey Club Melbourne (HC Melbourne) including Peter Scott, hockey veteran, Andrew Scanlon; young gun Kade Leigh (Junior National Representative for the Kookaburras) and Ash Utri (Footy pro turned budding Hockeyroos hopeful).

The kids, as expected, had some fun in the great outdoors with their sporting heroes!

In April this year, TFE Hotels announced a two-year extension of Adina Hotels’ sponsorship with Hockey Australia. In addition to the clinics, the agreement will ensure Adina Hotels maintains a strong presence with the sport’s flagship teams – The Hockeyroos and The Kookaburras.

Adina is also the official partner of Hockey Australia’s suite of National Hockey Championships including U14, U16, U18, U21, the Indoor Championships, Country Championships and Masters Championships.

David Pryles says Hockey Australia is committed to working with Adina for the betterment of the sport.

“We will continue to work closely with the Adina team to ensure Community Clinics are delivered regularly across Australia and on an ongoing basis.”
