  • New Year Detox: Clean Eating Tips For A Fresh Start After The Holidays

New Year Detox: Clean Eating Tips For A Fresh Start After The Holidays

As the new year begins, many of us feel the need to reset after indulgent holiday feasts. This often sparks interest in detoxing, a buzzword in health circles. However, it’s important to understand what detoxing truly entails and how to approach it effectively. The term “detox” is often used loosely. While it might sound appealing, it lacks a strong scientific foundation. Your liver and kidneys are naturally equipped to filter and eliminate toxins from the body, making most claims about magical detox solutions unnecessary. What many detox plans do achieve, however, is significant calorie reduction, which can lead to weight loss. These plans typically involve consuming minimal calories through juices, soups, or low-calorie foods like cucumbers, carrots, and watermelon. While this approach may result in fat loss, it’s crucial to prioritise nourishing the body rather than simply slashing calories.

Here Are 4 Clean Eating Tips For A Fresh Start After The Holidays:

    1. Simplify Your Diet For Better Digestion

One overlooked benefit of detox plans is their positive impact on digestion. After weeks of indulging in spicy, oily, and rich foods, a lighter diet can give your gastrointestinal tract a much-needed break. Reducing heavy meals and opting for simple, mildly spiced foods can lower gut inflammation, improve digestion, and leave you feeling more comfortable. Incorporating natural ingredients like turmeric, salt, and pepper in moderation, instead of relying on excessive seasonings, can further support this process.

    2. Choose Fiber-Rich Foods And Unstrained Juices

Fresh fruit and vegetable juices can be a refreshing way to boost hydration and nutrient intake. However, these juices should be consumed unstrained to retain their fiber content, which is vital for digestion and satiety. Straining juices removes fiber, slightly increasing their calorie density while reducing their overall health benefits.

    3. Don’t Skip Protein

While detox diets emphasize vegetables and fruits, they often overlook a key nutritional component: protein. Including protein in your meals is essential for maintaining energy levels, supporting immunity, and promoting satiety. Options like egg whites, Greek yogurt, and paneer offer necessary protein without significantly increasing calorie intake. A diet lacking protein can weaken immunity and leave you feeling hungry, making it harder to sustain healthy eating habits.

    4. Focus On Whole Foods For Sustainable Clean Eating

Instead of pursuing extreme detox regimens, adopt a balanced approach to clean eating for a sustainable reset. Post-holidays, focusing on fresh produce, whole foods, and adequate hydration can work wonders for your body. Prioritize meals with a mix of vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats while avoiding overly processed foods and excessive sugar.

Ultimately, detoxing shouldn’t be about quick fixes or drastic measures. It’s about giving your body the care and nourishment it needs. By focusing on whole, unprocessed foods and mindful eating habits, you can start the year feeling energised and balanced. Trust your body’s natural ability to detoxify, and make choices that support long-term health rather than fleeting trends. With this approach, you’ll enjoy benefits that extend well beyond the first few weeks of the new year.

Start 2025 Right: Simple Detox Tips After New Years Eve Celebrations

First, wishing you all a very happy and prosperous New Year (in advance). Now, tell us are you ready to rock and roll? Well, who isn’t? From partying with friends to jetting off to dreamy locations, most of us have our plans set for New Year 2025. While we are busy preparing for the much-awaited time of the year, let us not forget the detox part. The champagne toasts and fast foods can take a toll, leaving you feeling sluggish and overindulged. But a gentle detox can help you get back on track and welcome the year with renewed energy. Here’s how to reset your body and mind after the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Also Read: 8 Foods From Around The World That Are Said To Bring Good Luck In New Year

Here Are 6 Detox Diet Tips After New Year’s Eve:

    1. Hydrate with lemon water to jumpstart your day:

Start your detox journey as soon as you wake up with a glass of warm lemon water. This drink stimulates your liver, encouraging bile production and aiding digestion. Squeezing the juice of half a lemon into warm water first thing in the morning not only helps cleanse your digestive system but also boosts hydration levels. Keeping yourself hydrated throughout the day is essential for flushing out toxins and supporting overall body functions. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and set regular reminders to stay on top of your water intake.

    2) Re-evaluate your diet for nutrient-rich foods: Your body needs nourishing foods to support its detox efforts. Opt for a diet packed with fresh fruits, vegetables whole grains and legumes, all of which are rich in antioxidants. These nutrients protect your cells from the harmful effects of stress and inflammation. Consider adding colourful bell peppers, antioxidant-packed berries, leafy greens like broccoli and citrus fruits into your meals.

    3) Cut back on alcohol for a clearer path to detox: While the occasional drink is perfectly fine, excessive alcohol consumption can seriously hinder your body’s natural detox process. Alcohol puts extra strain on your liver, as it has to work overtime to process and remove toxins from your system. Overindulgence in alcohol can also disrupt your metabolism and delay recovery. Limiting your alcohol intake will allow your liver to focus on detoxifying your body, helping you feel lighter and more energised.

    4) Exercise to help release toxins: Regular physical activity is a crucial component of any detox plan. Exercise promotes the release of toxins through sweat. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or a workout session at the gym, moving your body will help flush out toxins and boost your metabolism. Not only will exercise support your detox goals, but it also improves mental clarity, reduces stress and strengthens your cardiovascular health.

    5) Prioritise sleep for a full recovery: Never underestimate the power of sleep when it comes to detoxifying your body. After the excitement of New Year’s Eve, ensure that you’re giving your body enough rest to recover and perform its natural detoxification processes. Quality sleep supports your immune system, reduces inflammation and restores balance. Aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night.

    6) Mind your sugar and salt intake: One of the key steps in detoxing is reducing your intake of sugar and salt, both of which can contribute to bloating and fatigue. During this detox period, try to eliminate refined sugars from your diet, as they can cause blood sugar spikes and crashes. Instead, reach for natural sweeteners like honey or jaggery, which provide a healthier alternative. Cutting back on salt will help your body maintain fluid balance and reduce the strain on your kidneys, allowing for better overall detoxification.

By following these simple and natural detox tips, you can help your body recover from the indulgence of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Retirement planning: Don’t want to compromise on lifestyle in golden years? Start saving early and invest in equity

When ET Wealth was launched 14 years ago, our mandate was very clear: empower our readers with knowledge to help them make informed financial decisions. Over the years, we have steadfastly guided readers through the complexities of money management. To celebrate our 14th milestone, our special anniversary issue dives deep into a topic close to every investor’s heart—retirement.

Our cover story explores the unique hurdles and opportunities that arise at different stages of planning for life after work. Whether you’re just starting to think about retirement, actively building your nest egg, or already enjoying its rewards, this issue is packed with insights, strategies, and inspiration to help you achieve the financial freedom you deserve.

    Challenges for young earners

Khushal Aggarwal is a careful spender but he has nothing left at the end of the month to put away for his golden years. “I have more important goals than planning for retirement,” says the Delhi-based coaching teacher. High expenses is a common reason why many young people are not able to save for their retirement. The India Retirement Index Study (IRIS) by Max Life Insurance found that adequate family wealth, dependence on children and the absence of a trusted adviser also kept people from saving for their sunset years.

    im-3

Why working professionals don’t save for retirement

Dependency on family and generational wealth remain among the top reasons to not start retirement planning.
    Enough family wealth
    42%
    Children will take care
    41%
Too early to think about retirement
    34%
    More important things to consider
    31%
    No trusted adviser
    31%
Source: IRIS 4.0 study by Max Life Insurance and Kantar. The survey was conducted among 2,077 respondents.

For primary earners like Aggarwal, saving money while managing household expenses on a tight income can be challenging. However, experts say a low income should not be a barrier for saving for this crucial goal. “Unlike other financial goals, such as buying a home, funding education, or travelling, retirement is non-negotiable; postponing it may impact one’s quality of life in the later years,” says Kurian Jose, CEO, Tata Pension Management.

Delaying the decision can prove costly because you will have to invest more to reach the targeted amount. At 25, a person will have to invest only Rs.14,717 a month in an option that earns 10% returns to build a corpus big enough to provide a retirement income of Rs.1 lakh per month at the age of 60. If he delays the decision by five years, the monthly investment required rises to Rs.27,652. Wait for another five years, and the required amount shoots up to Rs.53,441.Don’t be surprised by the huge difference in the amount required if you start late. Compounding is at work here. Keep in mind that the early starter also increases the amount by 10% every year. Even so, the investors who delay the decision will have to save higher amounts to reach the required corpus. A person who delays the start till the age of 40 will need to put away Rs.1.08 lakh per month, which is Rs.46,108 more than the monthly sum required if he started at 25. “Don’t underestimate the power of compounding. Even if you feel strapped for cash, cut down on non-essential expenses and prioritise retirement savings,” advises Prashant Tripathy, Managing Director & CEO, Max Life Insurance.

    Use magic of compounding

Money saved during early working years plays a big role in the retirement corpus. Savings in your 20s and early 30s create the foundation for compounding to work its magic. Even larger contributions made in later years won’t have the same impact. If you invest for 30 years and increase the amount by 10% every year, what you saved in the first 15 years will account for almost 70% of the total corpus at 60. The early investments do the heavy lifting over time and form the bulk of the retirement corpus.

Warren Buffett, has some advice for young earners who find it difficult to save due to high expenses. He says, “Don’t save what is left after spending, but spend what is left after saving.” It’s a simple solution for a generation that prioritises enjoying the present over planning for the future.

To get Rs.1 lakh per month in retirement…

… you need a corpus of Rs.2.26 crore to sustain monthly withdrawals for 25 years. Withdrawals will increase by 6% every year to keep pace with inflation. For a 25-year-old, 6% inflation will push the required amount to Rs.17.37 crore when he turns 60. An early start makes it easy to reach the target.

    im-2

    im-7

ASSUMPTIONS : For these calculations, inflation taken at 6% , pre-retirement returns at 10%, post-retirement returns at 8%, and annual increase in investment taken at 10%

A disciplined approach and small adjustments can help young earners like Aggarwal achieve the target. Formulating a budget is your first step. Start by listing out all your expenses in a month, which will tell you where the money is going. Identify the unnecessary expenses that can be curtailed. If you are disciplined, you will be able to allocate the required funds to retirement savings.

    Don’t depend on children

Four out of 10 respondents in the IRIS study by Max Life Insurance said that they were not saving for retirement because their children would take care of them in their old age. Indeed, for many people their children is their only retirement plan. Meet Kunal Sharma, a Jaipur-based logistics manager who has put retirement savings on the backburner and is focusing on saving for his child’s education. “In our family, it’s a tradition that children take care of their parents in old age. I’m focusing on giving my child the best education and upbringing. When the time comes, he will support me,” he says.

    im-6

Though many Indians may agree with Sharma, this arrangement is fraught with risks. Depending on children in retirement can be problematic for several reasons. For one, the joint family is slowly giving way to the nuclear family set-up in urban India. The children may have their own financial obligations and the parents’ financial dependence on them might put pressure on their resources, lead to resentment and strain the relationship. “Children often have to balance their own financial responsibilities. They may feel the strain of supporting their ageing parents,” says Jose. Sharma’s reliance on his child for financial support can create dissonance if the child is unwilling to do it.

Many young professionals know the importance of building a sizeable retirement corpus, but still delay saving for it. Their motto is, ‘you only live once’. Take 29-year-old Ratul Mohindra. He wants to save tax and build a healthy retirement corpus, but has steadfastly stayed away from joining the National Pension System (NPS). “I don’t want to lock my money away for the long term in the NPS,” he says.

    im-5

Little does Mohindra realise that the NPS is purpose-built for retirement. The very idea of retirement savings is that these shouldn’t be touched until you actually stop working. Besides offering tax benefits, the NPS instills financial discipline, ensuring that you stay on track for achieving your long-term goals.

    Plan beyond finances

Securing your finances is important for a care-free retirement. However, staying healthy is equally important. As we age, medical expenses tend to rise, and if you have not paid enough attention to your health, these costs can deplete your retirement savings. Healthier individuals are less likely to encounter costly health issues. “Having a sedentary lifestyle might seem harmless when you are young, but it can drain your finances later,” says Priyank Shah, CEO, The Financialist. Building healthy habits, such as regular exercise and a balanced diet, from a young age not only helps control future medical costs, but can also lead to lower health insurance premiums, safeguarding more of your retirement nest egg. The good news is that it costs nothing to complete 10,000 steps each day. “It will ensure a more financially secure and fulfilling post-retirement life,” says Jose of Tata Pension Management. Retirement might seem far off, but the decisions you make today can significantly impact your financial security later.

Who doesn’t love to enjoy a few more years of youthful appearance? As natural as ageing is, our genetics, environment, lifestyle, and diet can also play a major role in the process. Here Are 3 Drinks That Can Make You Age Faster, According To The Nutritionist:

    1. Energy Drinks

Energy drinks have become quite popular in recent years, especially among the youth. These drinks are often marketed as a quick way to boost your energy during a workout. Sure, they might give you that instant kick of energy, but did you know they could also accelerate ageing? Yes, you read that right. According to Garima, energy drinks contain a high amount of caffeine, which leads to dehydration and dullness of the skin. Moreover, they are also filled with copious amounts of sugar, which can increase oxidative stress in the body. When this happens, your skin will mature quickly. Instead of energy drinks, she recommends having decaf coffee or sugar free tea.

    2. Alcohol

You must also avoid alcohol if you wish to slow down ageing. The nutritionist states that alcohol can increase inflammatory cells, due to which your skin can start to deteriorate. Moreover, drinking alcohol also dehydrates the body, causing your skin to look dull and dry. According to a study published in Northwestern Medicine, drinking liquor daily for five years can accelerate biological ageing by four months. So, make sure to consume alcohol within limits and only occasionally.

However, let’s not forget that your favourite soft drinks are also loaded with sugar. As we all know, anything with a high sugar content is not good for us. The league leaders, now managed by Joao Pereira, continued their perfect domestic record in Portugal with 14 wins in as many games.

United target Viktor Gyokeres played a hand in the goalfest, converting from the penalty spot in the 89th minute to score Sporting’s last goal of the game.

The Swede has now netted 24 times in 17 games, as the rumours about his future ramp up ahead of the January transfer window.

Area student athletes take advantage of the start of the early signing period Wednesday

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -Wednesday began the early scholarship signing period for high school student athletes, and several seniors in our area taking advantage to sign on day one of this period.

The folks at Arnold watching nine players in four different sports sign athletic scholarship offers, well over 400 family, friends, students, coaches and administrators on hand for this event. That list of 9 starting with three in softball. Outfielders Justice Taylor and Kaylie Mellies both signing with Reid College, a juco in Evergreen, Alabama. Pitcher Breanna Clark, who owns the strikeout record at Arnold, going Division One with Southeastern Louisiana University. Four baseball signings, the first two, outfielder Austin Hendrix and infielder Josh Lindsey both signing with Gulf Coast, so they’ll stay local. And two pitchers, Eli Blair and Cooper Moss both headed to the SEC, signing today with the University of Florida. Zoey Vandel, coming off her senior season in volleyball, signing with Jacksonville University. And Delaney Sieber, a star swimmer at Arnold, signing a rowing scholarship with Saint Mary’s in California. She’s actually getting a scholarship in a new sport for her. All in all, a big day indeed for these student-athletes their families and beyond! Arnold A.D. and head softball coach Rick Green said this shortly after the signings.

”It’s special for Arnold high school too in that it’s historic, it’s the largest signing class we’ve had, I know in the last 17 years. And looking back, it looks like the last 25 years. And to have five Division I athletes in that group of nine it’s amazing to me. And what I’m so happy about is it’s over a wide spectrum of sports. We’ve got nine athletes in four different sports today. We’ve got more coming in December.”

Meanwhile over at South Walton High School four more signings taking place in the auditorium there Wednesday afternoon. Those four all in baseball, starting with Cameron Tipton-Thomas, a pitcher who signed with Troy. Next up, Frank Wells the Seahawks shortstop, who signed an offer today with Georgia Southern. Then comes Charlie Willcox a pitcher who is off to Georgia Tech come the summer. And number four on the list there Braxton Varnes, another pitcher headed to the ACC, Varnes is off the Florida State University. So a big day for South Walton baseball, four Division One signees who all have their senior seasons ahead of them.

“It’s definitely special for South Walton High School you know to have just four commits from one team.” South Walton A.D. Phil Tisa told us. “Yet alone four D1. And it’s a special day for these young men. It’s the culmination of a decade plus of an athletic career.”

One more signing taking place at Bay Wednesday afternoon. Emily Rollins, a senior striker on the Bay girls soccer team signed a scholarship offer with Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. Emily a four-year starter for the Tornadoes who already has 8 goals in just three matches this season.

  • Amazon Prime to start streaming Diamond Sports regional networks

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, Diamond Sports — which owns and operates 16 regional sports networks and recently rebranded due to a partnership with the FanDuel Sports Network — reached a deal with Amazon Prime to allow the popular streaming service to start broadcasting their games as an add-on subscription offer for Prime customers.

This isn’t the first time a sports broadcasting network has turned to streaming in order to overcome decreasing viewership numbers. Various networks, including the New York Yankees‘ YES Network, which launched its own streaming service called Gotham Sports in October this year.

Amazon previously had invested a good chunk of change in Diamond Sports. In January, Amazon reached a deal with Diamond to gain access to some of their local content during the MLB season — particularly games for the Tampa Bay RaysKansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers, Miami Marlins and Milwaukee Brewers. At the time, Amazon did not have access to the entirety of Diamond Sports’ collection. After all, creditors had invested $450 million into Diamond Sports in order to ensure they could continue broadcasting NBA and NHL games through the end of the 2023-24 season.

When should kids start using social media? Australia’s government proposes age limit of 16

MELBOURNE, Australia — The Australian government announced on Thursday what it described as world-leading legislation that would institute an age limit of 16 years for children to start using social media, and hold platforms responsible for ensuring compliance.

“Social media is doing harm to our kids and I’m calling time on it,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.

The legislation will be introduced in Parliament during its final two weeks in session this year, which begin on Nov. 18. The age limit would take effect 12 months after the law is passed, Albanese told reporters.

The platforms including X, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook would need to use that year to work out how to exclude Australian children younger than 16.

“I’ve spoken to thousands of parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles. They, like me, are worried sick about the safety of our kids online,” Albanese said.

Social media platforms would be penalized for breaching the age limit, but under-age children and their parents would not.

“The onus will be on social media platforms to demonstrate they are taking reasonable steps to prevent access. The onus won’t be on parents or young people,” Albanese said.

Antigone Davis, head of safety at Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said the company would respect any age limitations the government wants to introduce.

“However, what’s missing is a deeper discussion on how we implement protections, otherwise we risk making ourselves feel better, like we have taken action, but teens and parents will not find themselves in a better place,” Davis said in a statement.

She added that stronger tools in app stores and operating systems for parents to control what apps their children can use would be a “simple and effective solution.”

X did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday. TikTok declined to comment.

The Digital Industry Group Inc., an advocate for the digital industry in Australia, described the age limit as a “20th Century response to 21st Century challenges.”

“Rather than blocking access through bans, we need to take a balanced approach to create age-appropriate spaces, build digital literacy and protect young people from online harm,” DIGI managing director Sunita Bose said in a statement.

More than 140 Australian and international academics with expertise in fields related to technology and child welfare signed an open letter to Albanese last month opposing a social media age limit as “too blunt an instrument to address risks effectively.”

Jackie Hallan, a director at the youth mental health service ReachOut, opposed the ban. She said 73% of young people across Australia accessing mental health support did so through social media.

“We’re uncomfortable with the ban. We think young people are likely to circumvent a ban and our concern is that it really drives the behavior underground and then if things go wrong, young people are less likely to get support from parents and carers because they’re worried about getting in trouble,” Hallan said.

Child psychologist Philip Tam said a minimum age of 12 or 13 would have been more enforceable.

“My real fear honestly is that the problem of social media will simply be driven underground,” Tam said.

Australian National University lawyer Associate Prof. Faith Gordon feared separating children from there platforms could create pressures within families.

Albanese said there would be exclusions and exemptions in circumstances such as a need to continue access to educational services.

But parental consent would not entitle a child under 16 to access social media.

Earlier this year, the government began a trial of age-restriciton technologies. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, the online watchdog that will police compliance, will use the results of that trial to provide platforms with guidance on what reasonable steps they can take.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said the year-long lead-in would ensure the age limit could be implemented in a “very practical way.”

“There does need to be enhanced penalties to ensure compliance,” Rowland said.

“Every company that operates in Australia, whether domiciled here or otherwise, is expected and must comply with Australian law or face the consequences,” she added.
