They say all is fair in love and war. But let’s be real, all’s fair in sports too, especially college sports. College football often makes the ground for the harshest of decisions. Sadly, this time Mike Bloomgren, the Rice Owls HC, became the protagonist of the ugly-plotted fate. The football program did not inch a bit before firing their long-tenured HC after the Owls had hit rock bottom. Well, it looks like the desperation to get rid of Bloomgren got real since this move would leave a hole in Rice’s pocket—$900,000. After all, shelling out such an amount is no joke! Surprisingly, college football does not wait for anyone, and the names for replacements have already started to pour in.
Finally, Rice has parted ways with their seventh-year HC Bloomgren on Sunday, October 27. Already, the program is in a sticky spot as they are headed toward a not first, not second, not third but TENTH straight losing season. In 2024, they are now 2-6, which might have instigated the officials to make the final call. ESPN analyst Pete Thamel broke the news on the same day: “Associate HC Pete Alamar has accepted the interim head coaching job, per ESPN sources. Rice has four games remaining, including Navy at home this weekend and at Memphis next week. He’s owed nearly $900,000.”
Associate HC Pete Alamar has accepted the interim head coaching job, per ESPN sources. Rice has four games remaining, including Navy at home this weekend and at Memphis next week. He’s owed nearly $900,000.
The Owls hired Mike Bloomgren away from Stanford back in 2017. Well, he can be called a man of experience, as he had been on the Cardinal staff plus served as a staffer for the New York Jets. During his time at Rice, Bloomgren was 24-52 and won six games in only one season, which was last year after the program finished 6-7. Even though the longest-tenured FBS HC in the state of Texas got fired in one go, it took him seven years to rebuild the program, which was far from easy.

Bloomgren was always quick to describe his vision as two-fold and went to raise the floor. And already the HC’s power could be felt as Rice football was ranked No. 1 in the ACC. But what helped? Maybe Bloomgren’s leadership served up as the magic potion. As star defensive back Gabe Taylor pitched in to shower the HC with praise, “He’s not even a coach anymore. He’s like another father figure in Houston.” Looks like, Rice no longer needs their old father anymore.
Two front-runners to take up Mike Bloomgren’s seat
Now that Bloomgren’s seven-year run has come to an end, the Owls may have already readied the cash. They will now turn to a tall task to find the perfect fit for their old HC. Already, they got Alamar to take care of the coaching duties as the interim until they finalize on the name. Here, Rice is at a plus point since they are near fertile Houston recruiting grounds. The name that has been doing rounds is UNLV offensive coordinator Brennan Marion. What makes him the ideal fit?

Well, too ripe in age to take up the coaching role, at 37 he has had tremendous success in the Lone Star State. Plus, he has the privilege of having the most unique offense in college football at present where elements of spread, triple option, and RPO systems go hand-in-hand. The next up in the line is Clemson Offensive Coordinator Garrett Riley.
His greatest USP is his offensive mind, which helped a struggling Cade Klubnik rise to a level that now he is hailed as the Heisman contender in 2024. Now that the Owls had a tough transfer portal under Mike Bloomgren, Riley comes as a perfect fit since he has spent most of his HC career as a decorated recruiter. Now let’s see who agrees to take up Bloomgren’s hot seat.

Marc Cucurella says Chelsea simply have to secure Champions League football for next season, with the Spanish revelation of Euro 2024 enjoying a remarkable renaissance at Stamford Bridge.
Cucurella was previously booed by his own fans who thought he was a £63million waste of money, but the left back signed from Brighton has become something of a cult hero at the club.
He assisted Spain’s winner against England in the final of Euro 2024 and now inverting into midfield under Enzo Maresca, Cucurella says he is loving life at Chelsea. All that is missing is a trophy and an invite into Europe’s most elite competition.
‘It changed very fast,’ Cucurella said. ‘I tried to work on me and what I can do better. We have started to create something important so we need to keep going.
‘Sometimes it’s difficult, we have a personal life, some problems, but now we are very good. I try to work on me and myself. I try to work on my confidence.

‘It’s not easy. It’s the most difficult part of football. One day if you play badly, you feel like you are the worst player. Another day if you play good you might think you are the best.
‘But you need to stay in the middle. If you lose, you’re not the worst. If you win, you’re not the best. Just stay there, focus on what you can improve and try to build on this and trust yourself.
‘If you play for Chelsea, it’s because you have strong qualities. In all careers, you have better and worse moments. But it’s about never stopping working and believing in yourself.’
On Chelsea’s ambitions for this season, Cucurella said: ‘All of us dream of winning trophies. In the league, we know it’s difficult.
‘You have teams who stay with the same project for a long time so there are a few in front of us but our objective, for sure, is to play in the Champions League next season. It’s very important for us.’

Cucurella is surrounded by team-mates on much longer contracts than his own, even if it does expire in 2028. The Spaniard is settled in London, however, and would be open to spending many more years at Chelsea.
‘I’m really happy,’ he said. ‘My family is happy here. We are in a top club with good fans. Hopefully I can stay for a lot of time.’

The start to the 2024 4A state girls soccer championship turned out to be a dream scenario for one team and a complete nightmare for the other.
Unfortunately for No. 3-seed Timpanogos, it was top-seed Mountain Crest who took control.
The Mustangs scored two goals in the first three minutes to build a commanding lead, then held on to defeat the Timberwolves, 3-1.
“To me, this game came down to taking advantage of opportunities,” Timpanogos head coach Robyn Bretzing said. “In the first four minutes of the game, we couldn’t clear the ball. We would struggle getting out of the back, and they were hungry for a goal. They capitalized on the opportunities that that we gave them.”
After the disastrous start against a really good opponent, the Timberwolves had to make a choice: Would they just go through the motions or would they dig deep and try to battle back?
The answer was clear as Timpanogos fought for every ball and pushed for every opportunity.
“I think you take away the first four minutes of the game, it went back and forth from there,” Bretzing said. “We created the same opportunities that we gave them, but we didn’t get lucky. We didn’t put the ball in the back of the net.”
She said she was incredibly proud, though, of how her team responded to the adversity.
“After those two goals went in, I thought, oh no, it could become a disaster quickly,” Bretzing said. “But I thought the girls responded and said, ‘heck no, we’re going to step up.’ The rest of the half I thought we really stepped up and created our own opportunities.”
Unfortunately for the Timberwolves, Mountain Crest would tack on a third goal in the second half. Even then, Timpanogos kept attacking and eventually broke through on a shot from senior Haley Hutchins in the final minutes.
“I was proud of them for putting the ball in the back of the net,” Bretzing said. “At that point, you knew you probably weren’t going to win the game, but they were not going to go without scoring. I think I was really proud of them for finishing strong.”
In many ways, despite not being the outcome they wanted, the way the Timberwolves played in the championship was true to the character of this Timpanogos squad.
“This team has always been a super scrappy team,” Bretzing said. “I think they’ve battled against some really good teams in the playoffs. We had to fight and find a way to a win in the quarterfinals and in the semifinals. Today, I think that heart and that battle showed in that they didn’t quit.”
Getting back to the state finals was an accomplishment this Timpanogos team can always be proud of, according to Bretzing.
“I think they’ve exceeded my expectations because we knew that we had some holes to fill from last season’s team.” she said. “But I think the girls stepped into those positions and got us to where we are today in the finals. I’m really proud of this team.”
The Timberwolves will have more holes to fill because it has eight seniors graduating.
“I’ve had great leadership all year long,” Bretzing said. “They’ve been positive and show the girls an example of how to be good leaders. I think that’s what’s got us into the final game, that positive leadership and that encouragement of those young kids, getting them to step up every practice, in every game, to believe in themselves and let them know that they believed in them.”
But she also hopes the next group learned from this experience and comes back hungry for more.
“We’ve got a lot of younger talent,” Bretzing said. “We are really excited for the future of our program because we’ve got some really good players coming up.”
While the Redbank Valley Bulldogs were winning their opener in the District 9 Class 1A boys’ soccer playoffs in Wednesday’s 1-0 win at home over Elk County Catholic, the Lady Bulldogs end a 14-day layoff when they play for the Class 2A title next Tuesday.
And against Elk County Catholic, it was the Bulldogs (15-4) scoring late on Caleb Root’s goal off a Kieran Fricko assist with just 1:42 left on the clock. (More on this game on-line at www.leader-vindicator.com and in next week’s print edition).
The 14-2-1 Lady Bulldogs haven’t played since blanking Keystone 6-0 in Knox back on Oct. 14. They take a 5-0-1 streak into the playoffs since their last loss, a 4-3 setback at Brockway on Sept. 26.
St. Marys is the Lady Bulldogs’ foe. The Lady Dutch stand at 6-11 and share common foes Central Clarion, Brockway, Elk County Catholic, Brookville, Karns City, Kane and Eisenhower.
The Lady Bulldogs were 2-0 against Central Clarion, 1-1 against Karns City along with wins over Brookville, Kane and Eisenhower with a loss to Brockway. The Lady Dutch were 1-1 against Brookville, 2-0 against Kane and Elk County Catholic, and a win over Central Clarion with a loss to Karns City and Eisenhower.
The Lady Bulldogs have outscored foes 81-29 thus far with Lia Hageter (29), Mylee Harmon (20) and Iris Reitz (13) combining for 62. Harmon (12), Bella Orr (10), Iris Reitz (9) and Lia Hageter (9) are the team’s assist leaders.
The rest of Wednesday’s D9 Class 1A boys’ quarterfinal schedule had top-seeded Central Clarion beating Northern Potter 2-1 in overtime, so it’ll be the Bulldogs visiting the Wildcats at the C-L Sports Complex at a time to be announced.
On the other side of the bracket Wednesday, it was No. 3 seed Brockway hosting No. 6 North Clarion and No. 2 Port Allegany hosting No. 7 DuBois Central Catholic. Those winners also meet Monday at the higher seeded team.
Monday’s semifinal winners advance to next Wednesday’s final at a neutral site and time to be announced. Only the D9 champion advances to the state playoffs with the opening round scheduled for Nov. 5 against the WPIAL runner-up at a D9 site to be determined.
The Bulldogs took a six-game winning streak into the postseason, outscoring foes 35-4 during that span. Last Wednesday in a 3-2 win over Ridgway, Kieran Fricko scored two goals while Titus Smith also scored. Brayder Perez Godinez assisted on two goals and Smith on the other. Leland Ingram was the winning goalkeeper.

Understanding the Concept of a Lifestyle Blog
Defining a Lifestyle Blog
A lifestyle blog is a space where I share my personal experiences, interests, and daily activities. It’s more than just a diary; it’s a way to inspire others. I can write about various topics like cooking, travel, or fitness, all tied together by my unique voice.
Differences Between Lifestyle and Personal Blogs
While both types of blogs share personal stories, lifestyle blogs focus on helping readers live their best lives. A personal blog might just share my thoughts, but a lifestyle blog aims to connect with an audience. Here are some key differences:
Focus: Lifestyle blogs target specific interests, while personal blogs can be more random.
Audience: Lifestyle blogs often cater to a particular group, like young parents or fitness enthusiasts.
Content Variety: Lifestyle blogs cover multiple topics, whereas personal blogs may stick to one theme.
Popular Lifestyle Blog Niches
There are many niches within lifestyle blogging. Here are a few popular ones:
Travel: Sharing adventures and tips for fellow travelers.
Food: Recipes, cooking tips, and restaurant reviews.
Fashion: Style advice and outfit inspirations.
In my journey, I’ve learned that choosing a niche helps me connect better with my audience. It’s essential to find what resonates with me and my readers.
A successful lifestyle blog isn’t just about sharing my life; it’s about helping others find inspiration and joy in theirs.
By understanding these concepts, I can create a blog that not only reflects my passions but also engages and inspires my readers.
Remember, lifestyle blogging is about sharing your journey while encouraging others to explore theirs!
Choosing Your Lifestyle Blog Niche
When starting a lifestyle blog, one of the first things I had to do was choose a niche. This is crucial because it helps define what my blog will be about and who my audience will be. Here’s how I approached it:
Importance of Niche Selection
Choosing a niche is important for several reasons:
Focus: It helps me stay on topic and create content that resonates with my readers.
Audience: A specific niche attracts a dedicated audience who shares similar interests.
Expertise: It allows me to showcase my knowledge and passion in a particular area.
How to Identify Your Passion
To find the right niche, I asked myself a few questions:
What do I love talking about?
What skills do I have that I can share?
What topics excite me?
I made a list of my interests and skills, which helped me narrow down my options. This exercise is key to ensuring that I choose a niche I can stick with long-term.
Examples of Successful Niches
Here are some popular lifestyle blog niches that I considered:
Fashion and Style: Sharing outfit ideas and fashion tips.
Food and Drink: Posting recipes and cooking tips.
Health and Fitness: Focusing on wellness and workout routines.
Travel: Documenting adventures and travel tips.
Parenthood and Family: Offering parenting advice and family activities.
When selecting a niche, I kept in mind that it shouldn’t be too broad or too narrow. For example, writing about “everything in life” is too broad, while a niche like “keto diet tips for seniors” might be too narrow. I aimed for a balance that would attract readers while allowing me to explore my interests.
Finding the right niche can take time, but it’s worth the effort. Your blog should reflect your passions and connect with your audience.
In conclusion, choosing the right niche is a vital step in starting a successful lifestyle blog. It sets the stage for everything that follows, from content creation to audience engagement. Remember, your blog is a reflection of you, so choose a niche that excites you!

Choosing the right blogging platform is a crucial step in starting your lifestyle blog. This is where you’ll create, publish, and manage your content. A good platform can make all the difference in your blogging journey.

Darnold admittedly got exposed by the Jets before the bye. Even with a blemish on his resume, Darnold is still one of the league’s most efficient quarterbacks. He is seventh in adjusted yards per attempt, 13th in EPA per play, and fifth in completion percent over expected. Darnold and the Vikings get a Lions defense that just lost Aidan Hutchinson—the NFL’s leader in sacks, pressures, and PFF pass rushing grades—this week. The total of their game sits at 50.5, the third-highest of the week.

Start: Kirk Cousins, Falcons
We’re likely in line for another run-heavy approach from the field goal-favored Falcons, but their team total of 27 points suggests there’s enough room for everyone to get home from a fantasy perspective. Cousins looked frighteningly bad in Week 1, his first game off the torn Achilles he suffered last year, and has played impressively ever since. He is sixth in both EPA per play and PFF passing grade over the past five weeks.
Sit: Jared Goff, Lions
The Minnesota matchup is a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. They lead the NFL in EPA per dropback and adjusted yards per attempt allowed. Even the uptick in passing volume they have faced has only boosted their fantasy points allowed to 23rd-highest. Goff has played well this year, but this is an obvious week to put him on the bench.
Sit: Anthony Richardson, Colts
I told you to sit Richardson last week and he scored *checks notes* zero points. Richardson, of course, was a surprise inactive on Sunday morning. He appears to be back for real this week, but his fantasy prospects remain bleak. He has one top-20 fantasy performance this year, largely because the Colts haven’t utilized his supernatural athleticism on the ground. Richardson has one game with more than 40 rushing yards. The team has also refused to let him pass, logging a -10% pass rate over expected in his four starts. This is not a recipe for QB1 production.
Running Back
Start: Chase Brown, Bengals
The backfield flippening finally happened in Week 6. Brown saw just over half of the snaps and his carry share topped 50 percent for the third week in a row. Most importantly, he ran a route on 54 percent of Joe Burrow’s dropbacks and saw a 14 percent target share. Both marks were season highs. Brown doesn’t have the Cincinnati backfield to himself, but he has cemented himself as the team’s preferred option over Zack Moss.
Start: Tyler Allgeier, Falcons
I’m still among the fools who believe Bijan Robinson can separate from Allgeier as Atlanta’s three-down back, but that hasn’t been the case recently and Allgeier won’t need a high share of the carries this week. The Falcons are 11th in run rate while leading and face a defense that has been targeted with a -2% pass rate over expected this year. The Seahawks have faced the fourth-most running back carries in total. Allgeier, who has seen 45 percent of Atlanta’s carries over the past three weeks, should get the ball enough to fill in as a FLEX play.
Sit: James Conner, Cardinals
Conner is putting together another solid season on the ground but has been used sparingly in the passing game. He is averaging two receptions for 14.7 yards per game through the air and has run a route on less than half of Kyler Murray’s dropbacks. The two-down role has meant he goes from an RB1 in PPR points per game in wins to a low-end RB2 in losses.
The Cardinals are 2.5-point dogs to a Chargers team that has allowed the fourth-fewest fantasy points to running backs this year.
Sit: Raheem Mostert, Dolphins
Mostert has only appeared in two games this year and has earned just 37 percent of the team’s carries in those contests. Like De’Von Achane, who is returning from a concussion this week, Mostert’s big-play potential has been sapped but the Dolphins’ lack of NFL-caliber quarterback play, among other variables. Both he and Achane are averaging fewer than four yards per carry. Achane is Mike McDaniels’ weapon on passing downs, making Mostert an early-down grinder on a dysfunctional offense.
Wide Receiver
Start: Demario Douglas, Patriots
Pop Douglas has emerged as the Patriots’ clear No. 1 receiver. Following two quiet weeks to start the year, Douglas has earned 26 percent of New England’s targets with a 28 percent air yards share. He is averaging 13.1 PPR points over that stretch. With Drake Maye on the sticks, the outlook of the entire passing game is on the rise. That will be amplified by a matchup with a Jaguars defense that ranks 29th in EPA per dropback allowed.
Start: Jordan Addison, Vikings
Addison returned to the Vikings’ lineup two games ago and immediately proved his worth as an explosive play specialist by scoring once on the ground and once through the air. He didn’t post big fantasy numbers in Week 5, but his role grew substantially. He went from a 12 percent target share in Week 4 to a 29 percent target share in Week 5. His target total increased from three to eight. Addison has a boom/bust profile, but a high-total matchup with a weakened Detroit defense lends itself to the boom outcomes.
Sit: Christian Kirk, Jaguars
Kirk remains in the WR3 ranks this week, but the return of Evan Engram took any WR2 hopes off the table. Engram played last week for the first time since Jacksonville’s opener. He was targeted 10 times compared to six looks for Kirk. The veteran slot receiver has played in two games with Engram in 2024. He averaged .18 targets per route and five total targets in those contests. His numbers jumped to 7.3 targets at .22 TPRR without Engram. Kirk can still get there on reduced volume, but don’t expect elite receiving totals as long as Trevor Lawrence has Engram to lean on.
Sit: Michael Pittman, Colts
With Richardson expected to play this week, Pittman’s stock is trending sharply in the wrong direction. Pittman makes his money on layup targets. Richardson ranks 27th in adjusted completion rate on intermediate throws and 34th on short attempts. Pittman is also facing increased target competition from Josh Downs, who leads the Colts in targets since returning to the lineup in Week 3. The squeeze for targets and the lack of high-quality looks are enough to remove Pittman from the WR3 ranks.
Tight End
Start: Hunter Henry, Patriots
Henry has a surprisingly high aDOT for a tight end. He is targeted, on average, nine yards downfield and is third among tight ends in air yards share. That’s not ideal with a quarterback who can’t generate explosive plays. It’s a far better role when your team switches to their rookie who isn’t afraid to push the ball downfield. Jacoby Brissett had an explosive play rate of 7.6 percent before being benched. Maye’s explosive play rate was 11.1 percent in his first start.
Start: Zach Ertz, Commanders
The Commanders have the highest implied team total of Week 7 by a wide margin. Vegas is projecting them for 29.75 points. The next-closest team is 2.75 points behind the Commanders. Ertz is top-10 in target share and top-five in air yards share among tight end.
There isn’t much more to say. Ertz gets targets. His team scores points. That typically leads to fantasy points.
Sit: Sam LaPorta, Lions
LaPorta is coming off his best fantasy game of the year…with one catch. It went for 52 yards and a touchdown. He has been targeted more than four times once and has a high-water mark of five targets. He has a 10 percent target share and has been targeted on 11 percent of his routes. Those are the underlying metrics of a fringe NFL starter, not a viable fantasy option.
Sit: Pat Freiermuth, Steelers
Much like every Steelers pass-catcher, Freiermuth’s quiet box scores are not entirely his fault, but they are the reality of the situation. He has peaked at 57 yards in a game and has only topped 40 yards once. The Steelers are 30th in pass attempts per game and 27th in pass rate over expected. A potential switch to Russell Wilson at quarterback may increase the passing volume, but Wilson has rarely supported a fantasy-relevant tight end. His tight ends have combined for one 15-point game over his past four seasons as a starter.
Maye Day, Maye Day, Houston, you’ve got a problem! Or have they? The questions are there, for sure. But for now, the Patriots Nation won’t be bugging about them as Jerod Mayo finally heard their wishes of promoting Drake Maye to the starting QB ahead of the Texans clash. And it’s got the Pats’ O-line excited as well!
Talking about how Maye is shaping up ahead of the Week 6 clash, OT Vederian Lowe said, “Drake has a ton of athleticism. Outside of his arm, he has a ton of athleticism. He’s able to make big plays with his mobility.” Now, this has given Lowe and the others some confidence. And why not? The guy under center knows how to escape the sacks and extend the play through his receivers. And that’s
#Patriots LT Vederian Lowe on what he’s seen from Drake Maye:
“Drake has a ton of athleticism. Outside of his arm, he has a ton of athleticism. He’s able to… make big plays with his mobility.
And as an offensive lineman, that’s really great to know that you have a guy who can… pic.twitter.com/GqYtedn8Xn
And that’s exactly what the Patriots need right now. Especially with their rough 1-4 start and four straight losses. Can you blame Mayo for wanting to shake things up? But with Jacoby Brissett taking hits like he’s in a boxing ring—49 sacks in just five games—it was about time the change happened.
Now, you’d ask, but why throw Maye to the wolves? It’s a fair question, considering the Texans aren’t exactly messing about. I mean, they’ve racked up the ninth-most sacks this season (15), and they pressure quarterbacks like it’s their job—oh wait, it is! Plus, only four teams have a better sack rate at 8.6 percent, and they’re third in pass yards allowed per game at 154.0.
So, if we go by that, then Yardbarker’s Colum Dell makes a valid point. He suggested that New England should’ve let Maye ease in against a weaker opponent before throwing him into this defensive storm. But here’s where it gets interesting. Sure, starting Maye could shake his confidence. That’s one side of the perspective. The other side? These early reps might actually boost his growth as he’s got the right mindset and is mature for a rookie. At least, Lowe believes in him.
So, whether it ends up being a spectacular debut or a rough outing, the truth is, this is just the beginning for Maye.
Drake Maye’s going to learn from failures

You might remember that Big Gronk (Rob Gronkowski) urged the Patriots Nation to remain patient. “I’m telling you, it will be the same old story with Drake Maye… He’ll be getting sacked. The offensive line will be letting guys go through, putting pressure on him.” And yet, Mayo had to name the third-overall pick as the starter. We say had to because, let’s be honest, the pressure was mounting.
But is this a rushed decision? Well, for starters, we know it wasn’t supposed to be on the cards this early. Nevertheless, we are here. And it’s just a loop if we keep going about could haves and should haves. It’s not that bad of a decision. Let us explain.
Maye brings strength to the table. By now, you must have heard it from everyone! That’s the truth. But boy, oh boy, the kid’s got arm strength. And his game? That’s the most Josh Allen-esque, if you have seen one. But, of course, there’s always a catch. It’s not all rainbows. Maye himself admitted, “I think, early on, just try to take what they give me and find completions.” In other words, stay on script before getting too wild out there.

Look, we know Maye’s going to have his hiccups this Sunday, and it might not be a highlight reel performance. But who can blame a rookie trying to find his footing? It’s about taking those hits and learning from them.
The Patriots are hopeful that this experience is a step forward—not just for Maye, but for the whole team. And the Foxborough needs something to celebrate.
Two unbeaten teams remain in Fredericksburg: Stafford and Fredericksburg Christian, who just improved to 6-0 with a dominant 48-0 win over Smith Mountain Lake Christian on Friday.
Not only have the Eagles remained perfect through its first six games of the season, they’ve been one of the highest-scoring offenses among Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association programs, averaging 42.7 points per game so far.
Five of those games have seen FCS score 40 or more points, including two 45-plus point performances.
“I feel we have one of the best RBs in Virginia in senior Christian Ray, but we have also been able to strike down the field with our WRs when needed,” head coach David DeArmas said in a text message. “Sophomore QB Trip Blalock is not playing like a first-year starter. His composure in the pocket has been great, and his ability to scramble when needed has helped keep the chains moving.”

On the other side of the ball, the Eagles have been just as dominant, pitching three shutouts while allowing 5.5 points a game to opponents over this span.
“Our defense this year has been a high point for us,” DeArmas said. “You can’t ask for anymore than for us to be headed into week seven having given up 33 points total this year.”
Despite this strong start, it’s important to look at the remainder of Fredericksburg Christian’s schedule, as last year saw the team begin 5-0 before a 1-4 end. Three of those four losses came against teams remaining on this year’s schedule: Fork Union Military Academy, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and Blue Ridge.
The end of this season’s schedule for the Eagles won’t be easy, but an improved team from last season will make those last four games competitive.
“We know we are going to be tested the rest of the season with the teams on our schedule,” DeArmas said.
High-scoring games and performances became the norm
This week might have been the highest-scoring week in the region so far this season as many teams lit up the scoreboard with strong offensive showings.
Seven different teams scored at least 40 points in games and eight scored 38 or more points. This included the highest-scoring game in Fredericksburg-area history between Stafford and Brooke Point, a 63-56 shootout that featured 119 total points scored.
“Our defense struggled at times, but our players’ will to win and grit found a way,” Stafford head coach Jeff Drugatz said.
That included more than 600 total yards of offense from the Black-Hawks, in a losing effort, as Stafford was able to withstand the offensive attack but still come away with a win.
Among the high-scoring teams this week was Louisa (3-2), which has now scored 40 or more points in three-straight games, all wins. Scoreboards won’t be able to keep up with the scoring at this rate.
Caroline’s performance makes them a Battlefield District threat
It was nearly a game that Caroline came up short, a loss that would have put them under .500 in Battlefield District play, but a late touchdown gave the Cavaliers a 26-21 win over Culpeper on Friday, making them 2-1 in district play.
That win was massive for a team that was coming off its first loss of the season last week against Eastern View.
Caroline still trails both Eastern View and King George in the district as both teams are currently still unbeaten in the Battlefield. A win like Friday is exactly the momentum the program needs moving forward.
“This win feels great,” Caroline head coach Terry Alexander Jr. said. “It showed that this is a relentless team and it’s going to be a dangerous team toward the end. We’ve already had a few nail biters early, but we got those out of the way.”
Creamer makes history for Stafford
Friday saw a new record set for Stafford football as running back Michael Creamer is now the all-time rushing touchdown leader for the program, breaking a record set back in 1966 by Horace Green.
Creamer ran for four touchdowns in the win and now has 37 in his career as he had yet another 200-yard performance on the ground.
The senior Richmond commit tied Green’s record last week in a thrilling 35-31 win over Colonial Forge, a game that featured a two-touchdown effort from him.
The Somerset football team has been a fast starter in most of its games this season, only to see games turn on them in the later stages of the night.
A fast start wasn’t in the cards for the Spartans on Friday at St. Croix Central. The Spartans played a lethargic first quarter which opened the opportunity for Central to build a 24-0 lead.
Somerset improved over the rest of the game, but couldn’t regain all the ground it had given Central, resulting in a 40-28 Spartan loss. The loss ends the chances of Somerset reaching the WIAA playoffs this season. The Spartans are 0-5 in the Middle Border Conference and 1-6 overall.
The Spartans will play their final two games at home, this Friday versus Altoona and against Amery in their season finale the following Friday. Somerset coach Joe Hutter was blunt in his assessment of the team’s situation.
“We know our fate,” he said. “We’re going to write the last two chapters of our book (on the season) and we know that’s what we’ll remember most is how we finished.”
Altoona and Somerset share the bottom spot in the MBC standings with 0-5 records.
Somerset has played evenly with some of the top teams in the MBC so the Spartans’ slow start against Central was surprising. Central opened the game with a 69-yard scoring drive where the Panthers overpowered the Spartan defense. Somerset’s offense looked just as flat, failing to get a first down in its first possession. Central then blocked Somerset’s first punt, setting up an easy second touchdown. Somerset’s second possession was just as listless and a short punt set up Central for a third early score. Somerset trailed 24-0 with just over nine minutes elapsed in the game.
Somerset senior quarterback Kane Donnelly tried to lift the Spartans out of their doldrums with a 75-yard run that set up a five-yard touchdown sweep by Blake Fox late in the first quarter.
It wasn’t until well into the second quarter that a Somerset setback carried the ball. From then on, Wyatt Mielke was a weapon in helping the Spartans maintain drives. He finished with 10 carries for 66 yards. That came during Somerset’s second scoring drive, when Mielke covered most of the yardage. A three-yard pass from Donnelly to Jake Krier got the touchdown that cut Central’s lead to 24-14 with 2:24 left in the first half. Central missed a field goal at the end of the quarter, leaving the score at 24-14 at the break.
The Spartans went nowhere on their first possession of the second half, leaving a short field for Central to drive for another score that made the margin 32-14. Give the Spartans credit, they did not give up.
Somerset drove 53 yards on its next possession, with a 24-yard from Mielke sparking the drive. The Spartans got another short touchdown pass from Donnelly to Krier, who was getting inside position on his slant patterns to give Donnelly a clear target as Krier slashed into the end zone.
Somerset scored again after recovering a Central fumble late in the third quarter. Donnelly kept the drive alive by racing for 25 yards on a fake punt. Donnelly hit Carson Belisle with a five-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the fourth quarter to shave Central’s lead to 32-28.
That’s as close as the Spartans could get. Central followed with a drive that ate up most of the fourth quarter, scoring with 2:52 left in the game.
Somerset struggled on third down in the game, making a first down on one of 13 chances. They were better on fourth down, moving the chains on six of eight tries. The Spartans were also hurt by penalties, drawing eight flags, including several that called back significant gains.
Donnelly led the Spartans with 153 yards rushing on 18 carries. He completed eight of his 24 pass attempts for 38 yards.
