Watch: Story Of Elderly Couple Selling Snacks At Thane Station Wins Hearts Online

An Instagram reel featuring an elderly couple who frequents Thane railway station (near Mumbai) is winning many hearts online. The video, which has since gone viral with millions of views, was shared by digital creator Siddhesh Lokare. In the video, the vlogger explains that someone sent him a photo of the couple – Bhimrao and Shobha – at Thane station a few days earlier. He later managed to track them down and interview them. He first asks them when they got married and the man states the exact date. The woman points out that they have been together for over four decades. Next, the vlogger asks them how often they come to the railway station. The woman replies that they come every day and they also go to deliver the snacks/sweets if someone has placed an order. We get a glimpse at some of their wares, which include treats like chakli, kachori, bhakarwadi, etc.

In response to a question, Bhimrao also reveals that he lost his vision when he was two. The vlogger highlights that Shobha knew she was getting married to someone without sight. He asks her about the same and she smilingly declares that she still married him. She said that they always imagine themselves in each other’s shoes. Her husband says, “I am visually impaired. She has a deformed hand. We thought we’d complete each other.” She adds, “We’ll stay together… for life.”

The vlogger asks the man how his wife helps him. He explains that she cooks food and serves water, etc. He also helps her out by chopping the vegetables for her dishes. His wife praises his cutting skills wholeheartedly. Next, the vlogger asks the couple what love means to them. The man replies that they need each other, especially at this age. The woman admits that they fight sometimes but they don’t stay away from each other for long. “It’s home. Utensils will collide but they will never break,” summarises the man. The vlogger also asks them what they are currently in need of. Shobha explains that they need a stall (for their wares) so they don’t have to remain standing most of the time to do their work. Finally, the vlogger asks the couple if they have a message for his generation (the youth). Bhimrao states, “Hard work is everything. You can’t live only for yourself. If you have lived for others, you have truly lived.”

In the caption, the content creator wrote, “I discovered Bhimrao and Shobha near Thane railway station and what happened next was just cathartic. Bhimrao is visually impaired and Shobha has a deformed hand, though, physical limitations never stopped them from being with each other and growing as a family. They visit Thane station daily to sell calendars, and snacks like chakli, laddoos, bhakarwadi and more. They stand as an example for me to realise what true love and companionship are.”

The heartwarming video has received a lot of praise on Instagram. Many people asked the vlogger in the comments how they could help the couple out. Check out some of the reactions below:

“Love is the answer to everything.”

    “They define the term, ‘LOVE’.”

    “I’m not crying. You are.”

    “More power to them.”

    “Respect for both of them.”

    “So so so wholesome.”

“Videos like this are the ones that I genuinely look forward to.”

“‘It’s a home, utensils will collide but they won’t break’ – Uncle dropping some heavy words.”

  • ‘You’ve gone quiet’… Paddy Pimblett calls radio station to confront presenter trash-talking his favorite soccer team

‘You’ve gone quiet’… Paddy Pimblett calls radio station to confront presenter trash-talking his favorite soccer team

A trash-talking radio host was shocked when Paddy Pimblett called to confront him on Tuesday evening.

‘The Baddy’ is known to MMA fans as the blonde-haired Englishman who has defied expectations to go 6-0 in the UFC and earn his place among the lightweight top 15.

When he’s not training for a fight, Pimblett is usually doing food challenges or watching his favorite soccer team, Liverpool FC.

So, when a radio presenter began trash-talking his hometown club after their latest win, the 29-year-old got on the phone and playfully put him in his place.

    Paddy Pimblett defends his team

Jason Cundy is a former professional soccer player, who notably played for one of Liverpool’s biggest rivals, Chelsea, during his career, which came to an end in the year 2000.

Since then, he’s become a popular pundit on the radio station talkSPORT, where he was voicing his grievances with Pimblett’s team after they recorded an impressive 4-0 win over German side Bayer Leverkusen.

Cundy complained about the club’s famous anthem, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, which fans of the club sing before every game that takes place at Anfield stadium, where Pimblett hopes to headline a UFC event before his career is over.

The 54-year-old went on the take issue with Liverpool’s good form under new manager Arne Slot, who has shocked everyone by winning 14 of his first 16 games at the helm.

“They’re starting to annoy me now, they just get results,” Cundy said. “You know they’re good, but then you come away thinking 4-0? They just spanked Leverkusen 4-0?

“I think there’s probably more to come from this Liverpool side, that’s what’s worrying me.”

Cundy was talking to a Liverpool fan, who just happened to be sitting next to Pimblett. The UFC superstar snatched the phone and started giving his thoughts on the club’s good form.

“I did expect this,” he said. “Before Slot came, I said Jurgen [Klopp] was our generation’s [Bill] Shankly and Arne Slot was going to be our generation’s [Bob] Paisley. He’s going to win more than Jurgen did, and I can’t wait to be proved right.”

Cundy went quiet as Pimblett talked up his team, and it didn’t go unnoticed. The retired soccer player’s co-host pointed out that he had stopped complaining about Liverpool after being confronted by a world-class fighter

Jamie O’Hara commented: “You’ve gone a bit quiet now haven’t you!”

Cundy remained quiet until Pimblett hung up. Only then did he decide to come out of his shell with a comment that suggested he thinks Pimblett couldn’t hurt a fly, saying: “He’s all mouth and no trousers, Paddy.”

Cundy added with a laugh: “He’s not still there, is he?”

When is Paddy Pimblett’s next fight?

Unless he bumps into Cundy, it seems Pimblett will not be fighting until 2025.

Famously, he has a tough time making lightweight. Pimblett is known for ballooning in weight when he’s not in camp, so he needs extra time to ensure he makes the 156lb lightweight limit safely.

With the year almost over, the popular Englishman doesn’t feel confident he could make weight correctly and says the only way he’ll fight before 2024 is over is if the UFC offers him a big-name welterweight opponent.

Pimblett said in October: “It’s too late now to make lightweight for the UFC events at the end of the year. I’d rather not kill myself trying to make weight – but if they want to get me Colby [Covington] or McGregor at welterweight, I’d do it.

“I’d fight either at welterweight because they aren’t massive welterweights. I don’t think many welterweights are that big compared to me. I only realized how big of a lightweight I am when I fought Bobby.”

National monuments of Singapore: St James Power Station, Lifestyle News

What is a National Monument? Who gazettes them? How many national monuments are there in Singapore? To date, the Preservation of Sites and Monuments, a division of National Heritage Board, has identified and gazetted 75 buildings, structures and sites of national significance as an integral part of Singapore’s built heritage.

In this edition, we shine a light on what used to be Singapore’s first coal-powered electricity plant, St James Power Station.

    Location

St James Power Station was the 60th building to be gazetted as a National Monument, and is located near other National Monuments such as the Church of St Teresa, and Fort Siloso. The MRT station nearest to it is Harbourfront.

    Significant dates

    Date built:

    • Nov 7, 1927: St James Power Station was officially opened

    Milestones

    • 2 July 1960: The power station was reopened by then-Finance Minister Goh Keng Swee after improvement works
    • 1976: St James Power Station was shut down
    • 1980s: It was repurposed as a warehouse
    • 2006-2018: It was revamped into a sprawling entertainment and nightlife complex
    • 2022: Dyson global headquarters moved in
    • 2022: A heritage trail and gallery were added to the compound

    Date gazetted: Nov 11, 2009

    History

At the start of the 20th century, the only sources of electricity in Singapore were from the Singapore Tramway Company’s Power Station and the Singapore Harbour Board.

As electricity demand increased, these sources proved insufficient. To address this, the British Administration proposed the construction of a new coal-fired power station to supply electricity for both industrial and residential needs and to accommodate future growth.

The site at Cape Saint James — a headland (a narrow piece of land that projects from a coastline into the sea) in what used to be Telok Blangah Bay — was chosen for the power station. This area had once belonged to the Temenggong, the leader with whom Sir Stamford Raffles had negotiated to establish the British trading post in Singapore. The location was ideal because access to seawater was necessary for the station’s cooling system.

Before construction could begin, the area, mostly tidal swampland, needed to be reclaimed and levelled. Work began in 1924, and the first unit of the power station was commissioned on Sept 30, 1926.

The entire system became operational by June 1, 1927. To anticipate the rising demand for electricity, an additional generating unit was approved, and St James Power Station was officially opened by Governor Sir Hugh Charles Clifford on Nov 7, 1927.

At full capacity, the station generated 22,000 kilowatts of electricity (enough to power 275,000 ceiling fans for an hour), significantly more than earlier facilities, which had only produced 3,200 kilowatts.

The completed power station initially included a boiler house, turbine room, switchgear, pumps, and coal storage. Its location was advantageous as it was close to the sea for coal deliveries and also near the Federated Malay States Railway, enabling coal transportation by train. However, the station faced operational problems in its early years, leading to frequent power outages and blackouts.

By the mid-1950s, the plant was considered inefficient and underwent upgrading works, reopening on July 2, 1960 with new equipment that increased its power output by 18,000 kilowatts. The reopening was officiated by then-Finance Minister of Singapore, Goh Keng Swee.

Over the years, newer stations, such as the Pasir Panjang and Jurong Power Stations, were built to meet rising electricity demands, and by the 1970s, Saint James Power Station was gradually phased out, with the final gas turbines being decommissioned in 1976.

Currently, St James Power Station houses the global headquarters of Dyson. There is also a heritage gallery located inside its west chimney, and an outdoor heritage trail that starts from the overhead bridge linking Vivocity and the power station.

    Milestones

    It became a warehouse

In the 1980s, the increasing volume of shipping container traffic at the nearby port on Pulau Brani pushed the capacity of the staff and resources to their limits, creating significant strain on the operations of a globally focused port.

To address this challenge, the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) purchased St James Power Station from PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, and transformed it into a high-bay semi-automated warehouse.

Entering its ‘sprawling entertainment and nightlife complex’ era

From 2006 to 2018, St James Power Station was the place to be for a lit night out. Local entrepreneur and nightlife veteran, Dennis Foo, turned it into a vibrant hub for entertainment and nightlife, offering a platform for musicians and artists from around the world.

The place saw the likes of K-pop sensation Jay Park, American singer Richard Marx, and Mandopop idol Aaron Yan. Singapore’s very own Stefanie Sun and JJ Lin also graced its stage, adding to the venue’s rich musical legacy.

Housing the global headquarters of Dyson

ICYDK, Dyson’s global headquarters has been located at St James Power Station since 2022. Inside its office, there are state-of-the-art research laboratories, specialising in fancy-schmancy tech such as robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and more.

  • Mauldin’s Bridgeway Station gets Greenville Triumph stadium | Greenville News

Mauldin’s Bridgeway Station gets Greenville Triumph stadium | Greenville News

After more than two years of false starts, an up-to-$100 million sports stadium is moving forward at Mauldin’s Bridgeway Station

The multi-use complex along Interstate 385 will be used primarily by the Greenville Triumph minor league soccer team, as well as the Greenville Liberty women’s team.

Plans for the facility were derailed in 2022 when Greenville County, which would have been a major investor in the project as well as owner of the stadium, rejected the plan in 3-2 finance committee vote.

At the time, the estimated price tag was roughly $40 million. The project is now projected to cost between $80 and $100 million.

Private investors stepped in to make the project a reality after Greenville County rejected the deal, Mauldin City Councilman Taft Matney said. The state is also investing $10 million, with another $4 million coming from the city of Mauldin.

The project will break ground in early 2025 with planned opening in 2026.

The 10,000-seat stadium will provide a permanent home for the Triumph, which was founded in 2018 and first played home games at Legacy Early College west of downtown Greenville before moving to Furman University’s Paladin Stadium.

The new stadium will also be used as an event venue for concerts and festivals, and other field games including rugby and lacrosse.

“This stadium will be a place where our entire community comes together to celebrate, to compete and to create memories that will last a lifetime,” Triumph and Liberty Chairman Joe Erwin said at an Oct. 30 announcement.

Bridgeway Station developer Phil Hughes will donate several acres for the project to Mauldin. The city will own the facility, and the Triumph will be the lead tenant, similar to the Swamp Rabbit hockey teams contract at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, which is owned by Greenville County.

The stadium will anchor the mixed-use Bridgeway Station development, a $150 million project that mimics an Italian village on the edge of Mauldin.

Eventually, the footbridge that connects the project to the rest of Mauldin on the other side of I-385 will become a part of the larger Swamp Rabbit Trail system, connecting the greenway to the southern part of the county.

During the Oct. 30 event, Mauldin Mayor Terry Merritt said establishing the stadium within city limits is a major step forward in making the Upstate town, often seen as a bedroom community for Greenville, a destination in its own right.

“I believe this project will be an absolute game changer for the city of Mauldin and the entire Upstate region,” he told the crowd.

Despite setbacks, Matney said there was always a will to move forward on the stadium development.

“With Hughes Investments, Greenville Pro Soccer, and the city of Mauldin, there was always a determination to make this project a reality,” he said. “We knew as long as nobody gave up, we’d get where we are today.”

  • China launches new crew to its space station as it seeks to expand exploration

China launches new crew to its space station as it seeks to expand exploration

JIUQUAN, China — China declared a “complete success” after it launched a new three-person crew to its orbiting space station early Wednesday as the country seeks to expand its exploration of outer space with missions to the moon and beyond.

The Shenzhou-19 spaceship carrying the trio blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 4:27 a.m. local time atop a Long March-2F rocket, the backbone of China’s crewed space missions.

“The crew condition is good and the launch has been successful,” the state broadcaster China Central Television announced.

China built its own space station after being excluded from the International Space Station, mainly because of U.S. concerns over the People’s Liberation Army, the Chinese Communist Party’s military arm’s overall control over the space program. China’s moon program is part of a growing rivalry with the U.S. and others, including Japan and India.

The team of two men and one woman will replace the astronauts who have lived on the Tiangong space station for the last six months. They are expected to stay until April or May of next year.

The new mission commander, Cai Xuzhe, went to space in the Shenzhou-14 mission in 2022, while the other two, Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze, are first-time space travelers, born in the 1990s.

Song was an air force pilot and Wang an engineer with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. Wang will be the crew’s payload specialist and the third Chinese woman aboard a crewed mission.

Besides putting a space station into orbit, the Chinese space agency has landed an explorer on Mars. It aims to put a person on the moon before 2030, which would make China the second nation after the United States to do so. It also plans to build a research station on the moon and has already transferred rock and soil samples from the little-explored far side of the moon in a global first.

The U.S. still leads in space exploration and plans to land astronauts on the moon for the first time in more than 50 years, though NASA pushed the target date back to 2026 earlier this year.

The new crew will perform spacewalks and install new equipment to protect the station from space debris, some of which was created by China.

According to NASA, large pieces of debris have been created by “satellite explosions and collisions.” China’s firing of a rocket to destroy a redundant weather satellite in 2007 and the “accidental collision of American and Russian communications satellites in 2009 greatly increased the amount of large debris in orbit,” it said.

China’s space authorities say they have measures in place in case their astronauts have to return to Earth earlier.

China launched its first crewed mission in 2003, becoming only the third nation to do so after the former Soviet Union and the United States. The space program is a source of enormous national pride and a hallmark of China’s technological advances over the past two decades.

China says it’s ready to launch the next crew to its orbiting space station early Wednesday

JIUQUAN, China — China said all systems are ready to launch the next crew to its orbiting space station early Wednesday, the latest mission to make the country a major space power.

The two men and one woman will replace the astronauts who’ve lived on the Tiangong space station for the last six months.

The new mission commander, Cai Xuzhe, went to space in the Shenzhou-14 mission in 2022, while the other two, Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze, are first-time space travelers both born in the 1990s.

Song was an air force pilot and Wang an engineer with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation who will be the crew’s payload specialist. Wang will be the third Chinese woman aboard a crewed mission.

The three appeared at a brief news conference Tuesday behind protective glass, declaring their intention to carry out their scientific projects on the space station and “bring pride to the fatherland.”

The Shenzhou-19 spaceship carrying the trio is due to launch from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China atop a Long March-2F rocket, the backbone of China’s crewed space missions. Launch time is set for 4:27 a.m., according to the space agency’s spokesperson Lin Xiqiang.

China built its own space station after being excluded from the International Space Station, largely due to the United States’ concerns over the program’s complete control by the People’s Liberation Army, the Chinese Communist Party’s military arm.

Besides putting a space station into orbit, the space agency has landed an explorer on Mars. It aims to put a person on the moon before 2030, which would make China the second nation after the United States to do so. It also plans to build a research station on the moon.

The moon program is part of a growing rivalry with the U.S. — still the leader in space exploration — and others, including Japan and India. America is planning to land astronauts on the moon for the first time in more than 50 years, though NASA pushed the target date back to 2026 earlier this year.

During the upcoming mission, the space station will receive resupplies from an uncrewed craft, aiding them in performing space walks and replacing and installing equipment to protect the Tiangong station from space debris, much of which created by China.

The mission is due to end in late April or early May. Lin, the spokesman, said China has measures in place in the event that the astronauts must return earlier.

China launched its first crewed mission in 2003, becoming only the third nation to do so after the former Soviet Union and the United States. The space program is a source of enormous national pride and a hallmark of China’s technological advances over the past two decades.

  • Polish radio station replaces journalists with AI ‘presenters’

Polish radio station replaces journalists with AI ‘presenters’

WARSAW, Poland — A Polish radio station has triggered controversy after dismissing its journalists and relaunching this week with AI-generated “presenters.”

Weeks after letting its journalists go, OFF Radio Krakow relaunched this week, with what it said was “the first experiment in Poland in which journalists … are virtual characters created by AI.”

The station in the southern city of Krakow said its three avatars are designed to reach younger listeners by speaking about cultural, art and social issues including the concerns of LGBTQ+ people.

“Is artificial intelligence more of an opportunity or a threat to media, radio and journalism? We will seek answers to this question,” the station head, Marcin Pulit, wrote in a statement.

The change got nationwide attention after Mateusz Demski, a journalist and film critic who until recently hosted a show on the station, published an open letter Tuesday protesting “the replacement of employees with artificial intelligence.”

“It is a dangerous precedent that hits us all,” he wrote, and argued it could open the way “to a world in which experienced employees associated with the media sector for years and people employed in creative industries will be replaced by machines.”

More than 15,000 signed the petition by Wednesday morning, Demski told The Associated Press. He said he has also gotten calls from hundreds of people, many of them young people who do not want to be the subject of such an experiment.

Demski worked at OFF Radio Krakow from February 2022, carrying out interviews with Ukrainians fleeing war, until August, when he was among about a dozen journalists who were let go. He said the move was especially shocking because the broadcaster is a taxpayer-supported public station.

Pulit insisted that no journalists were fired because of AI but because its listenership “was close to zero.”

On Tuesday the station broadcast an “interview” conducted by an AI-generated presenter with a voice pretending to be Wisława Szymborska, a Polish poet and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature who died in 2012.

Krzysztof Gawkowski, the minister of digital affairs and a deputy prime minister, weighed in on Tuesday, saying he had read Demski’s story and that legislation is needed to regulate AI.

“Although I am a fan of AI development, I believe that certain boundaries are being crossed more and more,” he wrote on X. “The widespread use of AI must be done for people, not against them!”

  • Touring a quiet, freehold landed estate in Bishan: 15 minutes to Bishan MRT station and Junction 8 (from $4.18m), Lifestyle News

Touring a quiet, freehold landed estate in Bishan: 15 minutes to Bishan MRT station and Junction 8 (from $4.18m), Lifestyle News

Located in D20, Clover Avenue is a very long road, with a few side streets. There are some commercial shophouses on one side, and a large park, Clover Crescent Playground, on the other.

When I was driving here from town, Google Maps directed me to drive over using Lornie Highway then Jalan Pemimpin.

I have to confess to feeling not very impressed with the area at first, due to the large number of construction projects in the Thomson and Marymount area. In addition, Jalan Pemimpin is quite an industrial area, so I wasn’t expecting much from Clover Avenue.

However, the estate ended up pleasantly surprising me with how liveable it is! Join me on my walkabout of the area below to see why.

For those not familiar with the area, here’s the map. As you can see, Clover Avenue is parallel to Jalan Pemimpin and, over at Jalan Pemimpin, you can find several offices such as APS Industrial Building, Pemimpin Industrial Building, and the like.

As mentioned in the headline, the estate is within a 15 minutes walk of Junction 8, and Bishan MRT station.

I’ve previously classified 15 minutes as “walking distance” in previous landed estate tours, with some readers commenting to say that they disagree. Certainly, when the sun is out in full blast during mid day, I can see why some people would say that 15 minutes is too far to walk.

As such, you’ll be glad to hear that Clover Avenue is also close to a second MRT station, Marymount MRT — with the houses between nine to 14 minutes walk of Marymount MRT station. (In terms of retail shops and amenities, there is, unfortunately, much less at Marymount MRT station as compared to Junction 8!)

There’s not much further ahead (besides the houses on Jalan Binchang) so we’ll head back to get back to the main focus of today’s tour: Clover Avenue.

There are no supermarkets here but you can walk to Esfira on Jalan Pemimpin, to FairPrice Finest at Junction 8, or to Shunfu HDB estate. For your fitness buffs, there’s the gym, BFT Upper Thomson, along Jalan Pemimpin.

There are two other large playgrounds close by, Clover Way Park and Binchang Rise Playground, so kids (and fur babies) will have lots of space to roam. (Both playgrounds are within five minutes walk of Clover Crescent Playground.)

This brings us to Binchang Walk, where you’ll find even bigger houses. If you turn right, you’ll reach Clover Way Park playground.

(Both the street to the right and the street to the left can take you to Junction 8. It’s an old and large Capitaland mall, so I don’t think it’ll need an introduction. You can find everything from Bishan Bus Interchange to banks and Best Denki there. If you really want to know about the shops, click here for the Junction 8 Store Directory.)

Like Bukit Timah, Bishan is known for its large number of famous schools. Depending on which unit you’re looking at, the houses at Clover Avenue may be within 1 km of schools such as Catholic High and Marymount Convent. You’re also just across the road from Raffles Institution.

This brings us to the end of today’s article. I entered the estate feeling sceptical about it but left thinking I wouldn’t mind living there. According to Edgeprop, transactions in this estate are quite limited, there were no sales in 2023 and 2024, for example.
