  • Nvidia’s stock dips after China opens probe of the AI chip company for violating anti-monopoly laws

Nvidia’s stock dips after China opens probe of the AI chip company for violating anti-monopoly laws

Shares of Nvidia fell Monday after China said it is investigating the high-flying U.S. microchip company over suspected violations of Chinese anti-monopoly laws.

In a brief news release with few details, Chinese regulators appear to be focusing on Nvidia’s $6.9 billion acquisition of network and data transmission company Mellanox in 2019.

Nvidia shares about 3% Monday. They are still up 179% so far this year.

Considered a bellwether for artificial intelligence demand, Nvidia has led the AI sector to become one of the stock market’s biggest companies, as tech giants spend heavily on the company’s chips and data centers needed to train and operate their AI systems.

Nvidia’s shares have surged this year along with the California company’s revenue and profit due to AI demand. According to data firm FactSet, about 16% of Nvidia’s revenue comes from China, second only to its U.S.-generated revenue.

A spokesperson for the company based in Santa Clara, California, said in an emailed statement that Nvidia is “happy to answer any questions regulators may have about our business.”

In its most recent earnings release, Nvidia posted revenue of $35.08 billion, up 94% from $18.12 billion a year ago. Nvidia earned $19.31 billion in the quarter, more than double the $9.24 billion it posted in last year’s third quarter. The earnings release did not break out revenue from China.

The company’s market value rocketed to $3.5 trillion recently, passing Microsoft and briefly overtaking Apple as the world’s most valuable company.

China’s antitrust investigation follows a report this summer by technology news site The Information that the U.S. Justice Department was investigating complaints from rivals that Nvidia was abusing its market dominance in the chip sector. The allegations reported include Nvidia threatening to punish those who buy products from both itself and its competitors at the same time.

David Bieri, an international finance expert at Virginia Tech, said that China’s investigation is “not about what Nvidia is doing in China, per se” but rather a signal to the incoming Trump administration. China, Bieri said, is looking to set the tone of future relations.

The Chinese government, he said, is telling the U.S. “don’t mess with us, because all of your darling corporations that your version of capitalism needs to prosper have entanglements” with China.

Nvidia will have to revise its strategy in China or come up with provisions in their budgets for the type of uncertainty business with China will bring, Bieri said.

“I don’t think this is something that they can shake off,” he said. “I also have a tremendous amount of faith in the brilliance of the management strategy of a corporation like Nvidia to not only pay attention to credit risk, market risk and operational risk, but also to political risk.”

Nvidia’s invention of graphics processor chips, or GPUs, in 1999 helped spark the growth of the PC gaming market and redefined computer graphics.

Last month, it replaced Intel on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, ending the pioneering semiconductor company’s 25-year run on the index.

Unlike Intel, Nvidia designs but doesn’t manufacture its own chips, relying heavily on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., an Intel rival.

Rob Gronkowski’s wild lifestyle from forgotten $69k Apple stock to lavish car collection and Fox NFL Sunday appearances

FROM a lavish car collection to forgetting about $600,000 worth of Apple stock – Rob Gronkowski is enjoying a wild lifestyle.

When the four-time Super Bowl winner hung up his cleats in 2022, it was no surprise to see him grab retirement with both hands.

During his playing days for the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he claimed to have not spent any cash made from a NFL contracts, instead living purely off his lucrative business ventures and endorsements.

He has his own annual music festival, fitness brand, has sold NFT cards for $1.2million and even released a signature Gronk drink in partnership with Monster Energy.

The 35-year-old has also had cameos in films, the WWE and in adverts for household brands like Visa and Nike.

Gronk’s net worth is estimated at $45million.

But as he is no longer in his element at tight end, his new favorite position is behind the wheel of luxury vehicles.

Gronkowski boasts an impressive garage from 4x4s to sports cars.

    One of his pride possessions is a customised Mercedes-Benz S63 that has 603-horsepower and a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8.

They are valued at $185,000 – but that is nothing compared to the predicted $253,000 he splashed on an Audi R8.

His second-generation model is powered by a V10 engine.

Gronk can also be spotted cruising around Tampa in a Bentley Continental GT.

His car supposedly has adjustable mood lights and several extras that set him back at least $200,000.

And his luxury collection would not be complete without an Audi Q7 and a Jeep.

His garage even got so full that Gronkowski and his girlfriend Camille Kostek gave away free sportscars to fans.

Last year, he gave his supporters a chance to win two free Corvettes if they bought a ticket in a raffle, with funds raised going to charity.

The giveaway featured a then brand new 2023 Corvette Stingray and a classic 1974 version of the car.

Despite spending close to $1million on motors over the years, Gronkowski is not short of money.

In fact, he forgot he had $600,000 worth of Apple stock.

The NFL legend was at the Patriots when he phoned a contractor to build a mansion in Massachusetts in 2014.

Gronk explained to the Fortune: “Every time I saw him, when we were building the house, he kept saying, ‘Get Apple. Get Apple’.

“I [had] never been involved in stocks. I really didn’t know how stocks work. So I was like, ‘Alright, let me do this, man.’

“I call up my financial advisor. I’m like, ‘Put $69,000 in Apple.’

He did not check on the investment for two years, having forgotten all about it.

But after getting a nudge to check his wealth, Gronk revealed: “Now to this day, I have over $600,000 in Apple stock.

“All because of the investment I made in 2014 having no idea what I was doing, but just listening to the guy that built my house here in New England.

“Let me tell you, it’s the best investment I’ve ever had in my life.”

When Gronkowski bought Apple stock in 2014, shares were trading at $24.58.

A decade later, those same shares are worth $243.07.

These days, Gronk keeps busy by appearing on NFL Sundays on Fox Sports.

But even then he does not take the easy route, jumping out of a helicopter and into the ocean to mark Veteran’s Day weekend.

  • Bill Ackman vows to yank fund from stock exchange after Amsterdam soccer thugs target Jewish fans

Bill Ackman vows to yank fund from stock exchange after Amsterdam soccer thugs target Jewish fans

Billionaire hedge funder Bill Ackman on Friday vowed to pull his Pershing Square firm from the Euronext stock exchange in Amsterdam after sick soccer thugs ran amok to target Israeli fans in a string on anti-Semitic attacks in the Netherlands.

Jew-hating agitators violently assaulted supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Dutch city before and during their game against elite club Ajax that saw more than 60 people arrested on Thursday night and left 10 people injured.

Amsterdam’s mayor Femke Halsema said Maccabi’s traveling faithful had been “attacked, abused and pelted with fireworks” around the city by what she branded as “Antisemitic hit-and-run squads.”

Bill Ackman said the sickening scenes in Amsterdam were “a tipping point” in his move to de-list Pershing Square from the Euronext exchange. Bloomberg via Getty Images
Self-styled pro-Palestine protesters hunted down supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv and violently assaulted them. Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny Danon described the vile attacks as “terrorism.” AP

Ackman, who is Jewish, wrote on X that he would “seek approval” from Pershing’s board to “eliminate its listing” from the Euronext exchange.

“Events in Amsterdam during the last 24 hours provide an appropriate tipping point for this conclusion,” he added. “Leaving a jurisdiction that fails to protect its tourists and minority populations combine both good business and moral principles.”

The Democrat donor-turned-Donald Trump supporter said he had long been considering a move to the London Stock Exchange because that is where his firm makes most of its trades.

The 58-year-old hedge fund manager also claimed that he was already in discussions with Universal Music Group (UMG) about switching its own listing from the Netherlands to the United States.

His Pershing Square funds own a roughly 10% stake in the music and entertainment giant, making Ackman one of the company’s biggest shareholders. He also sits on its board.

“Pershing Square has a contractual right to cause UMG to be listed in the US. We will exercise this right and achieve a US listing for UMG no later than some time next year,” he said on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The global music titan counts Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, U2 and Rihanna among its artist roster.

The Post has approached Euronext and Universal Music Group for comment.

The billionaire Harvard graduate was one of the loudest voices calling for now-deposed president Claudine Gay to stand down over the anti-Semitic, pro-Hamas protests on campus earlier this year.

Ackman has also been a vocal critic of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, known as DEI, that claims to promote minority rights, calling it “a racist and illegal movement.”

Earlier this year, he yanked a planned New York Stock Exchange listing for his Pershing Square USA fund after investor demand fell short of expectations.

Taylor Swift, seen is one of the artists on UMG’s roster. Getty Images

The idea was to create a so-called closed-end fund, meaning shareholders can only pull back if someone else buys their stock.

Ackman rose to prominence in 2012 with a disastrous $1 billion short of Herbalife, the dietary supplements firm, with rival activist Carl Icahn taking a opposite stance on the company’s future.

The pair then had an infamous row live on CNBC the following year.

  • A TV as big as a bed? With the holidays approaching, stores stock more supersize sets

A TV as big as a bed? With the holidays approaching, stores stock more supersize sets

NEW YORK — For some television viewers, size apparently does matter.

Forget the 65-inch TVs that were considered bigger than average a decade ago. In time for the holidays, manufacturers and retailers are rolling out more XXL screens measuring more than 8 feet across. That’s wider than a standard three-seat sofa or a king-size bed.

Supersize televisions only accounted for 1.7% of revenue from all TV set sales in the U.S. during the first nine months of the year, according to market research firm Circana. But companies preparing for shoppers to go big for Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa have reason to think the growing ultra category will be a bright spot in an otherwise tepid television market, according to analysts.

The 38.1 million televisions sold with a width of at least 97 inches between January and September represented a tenfold increase from the same period last year, Circana said. Best Buy, the nation’s largest consumer electronics chain, doubled the assortment of hefty TVs — the 19 models range in price from $2,000 to $25,000 — and introduced displays in roughly 70% of its stores.

“It’s really taken off this year,” Blake Hampton, Best Buy’s senior vice president of merchandising, said.

Analysts credit the emerging demand to improved technology and much lower prices. So far this year, the average price for TVs spanning at least 97 inches was $3,113 compared to $6,662 last year, according to Circana. South Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung introduced its first 98-inch TV in 2019 with a hefty price tag of $99,000; it now has four versions starting at $4,000, the company said.

Anthony Ash, a 42-year-old owner of a wood pallet and recycling business, recently bought a 98-inch Sony for his 14,000-square-foot house in Bristol, Wisconsin. The device, which cost about $5,000 excluding installation fees, replaced an 85” TV in the great room off his kitchen. Ash now has 17 televisions at home and uses some to display digital art.

“We just saw that the price was affordable for what we were looking for and thought, ‘Why not?’” he said of deciding to upsize to the Sony. “You get a better TV experience with a bigger TV. You’re sitting watching TV with a person on TV that is the same size as you. You can put yourself in the scene.”

The amount of time that many people spend staring at their cellphones and tablets, including to stream movies and TV shows, is another factor driving the growth of widescreen TV screens. Overall TV sales revenue fell 4%, while the number of units sold rose 1% from the January through September period, Circana said.

Most people only invest in a television every seven years, but when they do, they typically choose bigger ones, according to Rick Kowalski, the senior director of business intelligence at the Consumer Technology Association. In the past 15 years, the size of flat-panel TVs that were shipped to U.S. retailers and dealers grew an average of one inch a year, Kowalski said.

The coronavirus pandemic accelerated the elongation trend as people spent more time at home. In fact, screen sizes increased an average of two inches in both 2021 and 2022, and 85-inch TVs began gaining traction with consumers, Kowalski said. Shipments of 98-inch TVs to the U.S. are picking up pace this year, and models as huge as 110-115 inches are on the market right now, he said.

“You get better resolution over time,” Kowalski said. “You get better picture quality. And so just over time, it’s easier to produce those sets and improve the technology.”

Best Buy’s Hampton said a benefit of a colossal TV is the viewer can watch multiple shows at once, an experience he described as “incredible.”

“If you’re watching YouTube TV content or ‘ NFL Sunday Ticket,’ you can actually get four screens up, and that’s four 48-inch screens on it,” he said.

Manufacturers are also adding new features. Samsung said it designed its 98-inch lineup with a component that analyzes what the viewer is watching to increase sharpness and reduce visible noise across every scene.

James Fishler, senior vice president of the home entertainment division of Samsung’s U.S. division, said the way people watch TV and experience content is shifting.

“It’s even more so about watching TV as a shared experience,” Fishler said. “They want to host a watch party and gather around their TV to watch the big game, or set up a cinematic movie experience right at home. ”

Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, its Sam’s Club division, and Chicago retailer Abt Electronics, also say they are expanding their TV ranges to meet customer demand for supersize screens.

TV industry experts say these monster TVs are beginning to encroach on home theater projectors, which create a 100- to 120-inch image that is less sharp and require rooms with blackout curtains or without windows.

“A dedicated viewing room for watching movies was exclusively the purview of projectors,” Andrew Sivori, vice president in the entertainment division of LG Electronics, another Korean manufacturer. “But you can get a much better viewing experience with direct TV.”

Retailers and TV makers said the buyers trading up range from millennials and members of Generation X to the tech-native Gen Z crowd. But as Jon Abt, co-president of Abt Electronics said, “It’s still a niche business.”

“A lot of people just don’t have the space to put one of those in,” he added.

Before dreaming big for the holidays, shoppers therefore should make sure a 98-inch TV will fit. Best Buy said its Geek Squad team asks if stairwells and entry halls are large enough to accommodate delivery and installation. An augmented reality feature on the Best Buy app that allows customers to see if products are the right size has been especially helpful for XXL TVs, the retailer said.

But for those worried about having the space for viewing, the good news is that the recommended distance for a 98-inch TV is actually just 6-12 feet from the seating area. The rule of thumb is to multiple the diagonal length of the TV by 1.2 to determine the ideal viewing distance, Samsung’s Fishler said.

If bigger is better in the TV department, how big can they go?

“I think we’ll have to wait and see,” Fishler said.

  • Netflix’s subscriber growth is slowing, but its profit and stock price are still surging

Netflix’s subscriber growth is slowing, but its profit and stock price are still surging

Netflix on Thursday reported that its subscriber growth slowed dramatically during the summer, a sign the huge gains from the video-streaming service’s crackdown on freeloading viewers is tapering off.

The 5.1 million subscribers that Netflix added during the July-September period represented a 42% decline from the total gained during the same time last year. Even so, the company’s revenue and profit rose at a faster pace than analysts had projected, according to FactSet Research.

Netflix ended September with 282.7 million worldwide subscribers – far more than any other streaming service.

The Los Gatos, California, company earned $2.36 billion, or $5.40 per share, a 41% increase from the same time last year. Revenue climbed 15% from a year ago to $9.82 billion. Netflix management predicted the company’s revenue will rise at the same 15% year-over-year pace during the October-December period, slightly than better than analysts have been expecting.

The strong financial performance in the past quarter coupled with the upbeat forecast eclipsed any worries about slowing subscriber growth. Netflix’s stock price surged nearly 4% in extended trading after the numbers came out, building upon a more than 40% increase in the company’s shares so far this year.

“We had a plan to reaccelerate growth and we delivered on that plan,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said during a video call discussing the results.

The past quarter’s subscriber gains were the lowest posted in any three-month period since the beginning of last year. That drop-off indicates Netflix is shifting to a new phase after reaping the benefits from a ban on the once-rampant practice of sharing account passwords that enabled an estimated 100 million people watch its popular service without paying for it.

The crackdown, triggered by a rare loss of subscribers coming out of the pandemic in 2022, helped Netflix add 57 million subscribers from June 2022 through this June — an average of more than 7 million per quarter, while many of its industry rivals have been struggling as households curbed their discretionary spending.

Netflix’s gains also were propelled by a low-priced version of its service that included commercials for the first time in its history. The company still is only getting a small fraction of its revenue from the 2-year-old advertising push, but Netflix is intensifying its focus on that segment of its business to help boost its profits.

Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters predicted the company’s ad sales will double during the next year while remaining a just a sliver of total revenue that will continue to be propelled by subscription fees.

“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us,” Peters said in a video call with investors. But he predicted Netflix’s foray into ads would eventually prove to be as successful as its recent crackdown on password sharing was.

Although he was impressed by most of Netflix’s report, Forrester Research analyst Mike Proulx called the slowdown in subscriber growth “concerning,” especially in the U.S., where the company is finding it increasingly difficult to attract more viewers.

“That’s why accelerating growth via advertising becomes paramount to Netflix’s go-forward strategy,” Proulx said.

As part of its evolution, Netflix has been increasingly supplementing its lineup of scripted TV series and movies with live programming, such as a Labor Day spectacle featuring renowned glutton Joey Chestnut setting a world record for gorging on hot dogs in a showdown with his longtime nemesis Takeru Kobayashi.

Netflix will be trying to attract more viewer during the current quarter with a Nov. 15 fight pitting former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson against Jake Paul, a YouTube sensation turned boxer, and two National Football League games on Christmas Day.

Choose items you can put on or take off easily. This way, you can adjust to different weather without losing your fashion sense.

That makes your clothes fancier. Add bold jewelry as well. Wear big earrings or a thick necklace to stand out. Accessories like these make your day outfit better for a night out.

    Versatile Tops and Bottoms

Tops and bottoms that easily change from casual day outfits to fancy night looks are smart purchases. A dressy blouse with fancy trim or fun patterns looks relaxed with jeans. You can also pair that same blouse with fancy pants or a skirt for an elegant evening outfit. Similarly, versatile bottoms like wide-leg culottes or high-waisted trousers offer endless mix-and-match possibilities. That way, no matter what comes up during the day or night, you shall have the right look ready to go.

Evenings demand a touch of glamour to highlight your beauty. Mastering hair and makeup enhances your confidence from morning till night.

    Daytime Glow

Daytime activities at the stock show call for a natural makeup look. Choose lightweight breathable products that cover without feeling heavy. Let your natural radiance shine in the sun. Enhance features subtly: tinted moisturizer, mascara, lip balm or gloss for fresh dewy complexion. Keep hair simple fuss-free: loose waves, sleek ponytail complementing casual daytime attire effortlessly.

    Transitioning to Evening Elegance

The sun sets, and the stock show becomes an evening event. Make your makeup and hair more glamorous and sophisticated. Update your daytime look with something dramatic, like bold lips or smoky eyes, to look more polished for the evening. Add volume and texture to your hair with big curls or an elegant bun that matches your evening clothes. This will help you look and feel your best during the nighttime festivities.

    Long-Lasting and Sweat-Proof

Face makeup should be made to last, and resist sweat. Day or night, you will want products to keep you looking fresh. Choose waterproof, sweat-resistant formulas for makeup that will not melt away. Use strong hair styling products too to keep your hair healthy. That way, your hairstyle looks perfect from morning sun to evening dances. Enjoy the stock show without worrying if things will fall apart – pick makeup and hair products providing a long-lasting and flawless appearance.
