“Nathan Jones strikes me” – Charlton Athletic expected to have quiet January

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

After a strong start to the campaign, it has been a disappointing last month for Nathan Jones’ Charlton Athletic side in League One, who may now be eyeing deals to strengthen the side in next month’s transfer window.

The appointment of Jones was seen as a coup for the Addicks, and after the impact he made at The Valley last season and strong summer recruitment, many believed his side would be among the promotion contenders in the third tier this time around.

However, after losing ground on the play-off picture, the pressure has been increasing on Jones to turn things around. They may well look to January to strengthen the squad in a push for the top-six during the second-half of the campaign.

Charlton Athletic’s January transfer window plans

    Nathan Jones

FLW’s Charlton fan pundit Ben Fleming was asked for his thoughts on how much he believes his side will be looking to spend in January, with the winter window opening in under a month’s time.

He said: “In terms of spending money, I don’t think I can see us spending too much money.

“I don’t think Nathan Jones strikes me as the kind of guy who likes to spend a lot in January.

“We’ve got a decent squad and we have molded it to him, and I think you have to give it the season to fit in.

“We have got a lot of players who are injured and, especially defensively, players who are coming back to full fitness over the Christmas period.

“So I don’t think we necessarily need to go out and buy players to replace them as they return to fitness.

“I don’t think January is ever a good time to be buying anyway. I imagine it will just be a time when clubs are inflating fees because it’s more difficult to replace someone mid-season.

“I don’t think there is any need for us to spend big unless there is a position that Jones really wants to strengthen, or if injuries are worse than we think.

“You know, if Jones is particularly coy about timelines for injuries and we virtually get no team news in that sense.

“I think unless some of those sidelined players that are currently unavailable are far worse? Then we might dip in, but I’d be surprised.”

    Nathan Jones

Charlton have some capable forward players, but with their style of play making them fairly attritional under Jones, there could be argued that there is a need for some more creativity.

Answers to that problem could be found in the market, but also tactically if Jones wishes to take the shackles off his players in an attacking sense to sacrifice some defensive solidity.

Per FotMob, they have the 14th best attack, having generated 17.4 xG across their 16 league matches thus far. Charlton are in danger of fading away into mid-table once again unless they arrest that issue.

It’s no great surprise that the Addicks are yet to score more than two goals in any league fixture so far this season. Aside from that fact, the base level of the squad is strong and should mean they have a more successful campaign this year than last.

A signing or two may be what tips the balance in their favour in a play-off race, or perhaps even better with a strong latter half of the season.

  • Gratitude Strikes James Harden 12 Years After Olympics Manipulation Led to Ugly Breakup With Kevin Durant & OKC

Gratitude Strikes James Harden 12 Years After Olympics Manipulation Led to Ugly Breakup With Kevin Durant & OKC

James Harden has added another remarkable achievement to his storied career. ‘The Beard’ moved past one of the greatest three-point shooters and NBA Hall of Famer Ray Allen to secure the second spot on the NBA’s all-time three-pointers list. Hence, it cemented his place among the league’s elite sharpshooters. He came into the Clippers vs. Jazz matchup needing a single make to immortalize his name on the legendary list.

And he did so with a pull-up three in the first quarter. But the night wasn’t just about setting records. He reflected on his illustrious career throughout his NBA journey. After surpassing Allen, Harden paused to give homage to his early NBA roots in Oklahoma City.

He highlighted the influence of former teammates Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, who had a telling influence, on his career at a young age. Talking to reporters post-game, the 10x All-Star said, “They set the blueprint. When I got there, they had the blueprint of how to work… So all I did was just fall right in line.”

“Those three years really helped me in my NBA career because it just gave me a ground base to where I can go off. From that point on, I was so comfortable and confident in myself. When I got traded to Houston, I knew I was gonna be successful … Shoutout to KD, shoutout to Russ, and the whole Oklahoma City organization,” Harden reflected, his words carrying a tone of sincere appreciation.

For one, James Harden was a crucial part of a young core that showcased one of the most promising lineups in NBA history, culminating in the 2012 NBA Finals appearance. KD’s scoring prowess and Westbrook‘s relentless energy defined the Thunder’s dynamic identity. And with a bench role, it helped the 2009 first-round pick to observe and adapt, learning the work ethic and determination required to excel at the highest level.

Things weren’t as perfect as they seemed in paradise—or at least, what should have been one.

Former teammate of James Harden reveals tampering during Olympics led to eventual OKC breakup

Every basketball fan would always wonder how the Thunder would have looked had the 2018 MVP continued alongside Kevin and Russell. It will remain one of those “what-ifs” (think LeBron James as an NFL player). However, it seems there is more to the story than we were privy to. A behind-the-scenes meddling that Harden’s former teammate, Kendrick Perkins, revealed in a recent episode of The Road Trippin’ podcast.

“I remember having this conversation when KD, James Harden, and Russ got back from the Olympics winning the gold,” the ESPN analyst started, setting the stage for what was an untold tale. “He [Durant] said, ‘We’re about to lose James because when was over in the Olympics Bron, D-Wade, all those guys were telling James, ‘Bro you’re too nice bro to be coming off the bench, you’re a number one option, you need to have your own team.’ Two months later, he’s traded to the Rockets. He turned down the contract extension, and the rest is history.”

    Absolutely a jaw-dropping twist in Harden’s story!

That said, it might not be right to completely attribute LeBron’s meddling during the 2012 Olympics to the ugly breakup. In a 2014 interview with ESPN’s Hannah Storm, James Harden confessed money was undoubtedly a factor in his exit. In fact, when he was asked if he would still be in Oklahoma City if money wasn’t an issue, he responded in the affirmative.

“Definitely. Definitely. No question.” It would seem the Thunder’s 4-year $55 million offer just didn’t do it for him.

Anyway, 12 years have passed since the Olympics manipulation. And the 3x NBA scoring champion has created a Hall of Fame-worthy resume in the meantime. Although things didn’t work out as OKC envisioned, it’s safe to say that Harden’s journey led him to greatness in his own right.

His time with the Rockets saw him evolve into a bona fide superstar. While his exit from OKC remains a topic of debate, there’s no denying the path he took shaped his legendary career. Whether he stayed in Oklahoma, Harden proved that sometimes, the twists in a player’s journey—both personal and professional, ultimately define their legacy.

  • Where has all the rain gone? Bone-dry October strikes much of US

Where has all the rain gone? Bone-dry October strikes much of US

A bone-dry October is pushing nearly half of the United States into a flash drought, leading to fires in the Midwest and hindering shipping on the Mississippi River.

More than 100 different long-term weather stations in 26 states, including Alaska, are having their driest October on record, through Sunday, according to records by the Southern Regional Climate Center and Midwest Regional Climate Center. Cities that have had no measurable rain for October include New York, Houston, Dallas, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Sioux City, Iowa, along with normal dry spots such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Phoenix, National Weather Service records show.

“This is on pace for a record dry October,” said Allison Santorelli, acting warning coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. This includes the Southeast, some of which experienced deadly flooding just the month before in Hurricane Helene.

In June, less than 12% of the country was experiencing drought. Now it’s almost 50% and growing, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

That fits the definition of “flash drought,” which is different than normal slowly developing dry spells, said U.S. Department of Agriculture meteorologist Brad Rippey, a drought monitor author. A study last year showed that a warming world from the burning of coal, oil and gas is causing more frequent and damaging flash droughts, such as a $30 billion one that hit America in 2012 and a devastating 2022 drought in China.

In one-eighth of the area of the continental United States, no rain has been reported for the first 28 days of October. About 93% of the continental U.S. is seeing below-average rain in October, most with less than an inch, according to climate center data analyzed by The Associated Press.

Cities like Washington are forecast to hit 80 degrees on Halloween, right after Chicago and Detroit flirt with those summer-like temperatures. “That’s wild” for the end of October, said meteorologist Ryan Maue, a former chief scientist at NOAA who recalled trick-or-treating in snow in Michigan.

Santorelli said a dome of high pressure has blocked moisture from moving north from the Gulf of Mexico, keeping dry much of the U.S. from the Plains and Midwest over to the Eastern seaboard.

“We’ve been stuck in this blocking pattern for almost two months,” Rippey said.

Studies the last decade or so have shown that the jet stream — the currents of air that move weather systems across the world — is wavier and getting stuck more often, attributing it to human-caused climate change’s extra warming of the Arctic, said Rippey. What’s happening now, especially with an extremely warm Arctic and “feverish ocean temperatures across the North Pacific,” fits the theory well, said Woodwell Climate Research Center senior scientist Jennifer Francis, one of the pioneers of the concept.

Stuck weather systems this year have caused “weather whiplash” in places like Sioux City, where downpours in June caused so much rain that it pulled down a railroad bridge and forced people to their rooftops, said climatologist Melissa Widhalm, associate director of the Midwest Regional Climate Center at Purdue University.

Asheville, North Carolina, which was devastated by Hurricane Helene, was deluged with nearly 14 inches of rain in three days in September, but has received only one one-hundredth of an inch in October.

The Mississippi River, a major transporter of crops, is at levels so low that shipping loads have to be constrained, Rippey said. It’s the third straight year of problematic water levels on the river, he said. When Helene struck the Southeast and flooded North Carolina and Tennessee in late September, it provided a burst of fresh water that helped return Mississippi water levels to where they should be, but it didn’t last, Rippey said.

It may hurt the transporting of agricultural products, but luckily for farmers the flash drought came in after harvesting corn and soybeans, Rippey said.

But dry fields mean a situation ripe for wildfires in both the Midwest and East, Rippey said. Farm equipment has started a lot of fires accidentally, he said.

Five large uncontrolled fires Tuesday had burned more than 1,000 acres in the East and Midwest, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Relief is on the way for parts of the Midwest as storm systems from the West are forecast to break through with rain, sometimes heavy, Wednesday and Thursday, Santorelli said. But much of the East and Southeast look dry for another week, she said.

Who is Noor Alfallah? Meet Al Pacino’s glamorous ex-girlfriend with a string of high-profile ex-boyfriends including Mick Jagger as she strikes up rumoured romance with Bill Maher

Noor Alfallah has sparked speculation that she is dating Bill Maher, after they were spotted together at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles earlier this month.

And on Wednesday an insider told People that the film producer, 30, and the comedian, 68, ‘have gone on several dates’.

The insider told the outlet that it was still very ‘early’ in the relationship between the TV host and Noor, who has had past romances with a number of notable names.

She previously was in a relationship with Hollywood star Al Pacino, 84, and shares one-year-old son Roman with him.

A separate source said that Noor and Bill – who share a 38 year age gap – remain ‘friends.’

But there are reports that their new romance has been going on longer than most people think, with People reporting that the May-December couple has gone on several dates outside of the public eye.

MailOnline is taking a look at Noor’s extraordinary Beverly Hills upbringing, recent career successes and numerous high-profile romances.

    Who is Noor Alfallah?

Noor grew up in the exclusive Beverly Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, the oldest of four siblings, and was raised by her Kuwaiti father, Falah, and American mother, Alana.

Both have their social media accounts set to private, and according to her dad’s LinkedIn page, he is the president of a company called Q8 Capital Inc.

Noor’s younger sister Remi made headlines back in 2013, when she was linked to late singer Michael Jackson’s son Prince.

They reportedly dated while they both attended the super-private Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California, and the pair was spotted on a series of dates around LA at the time.

The New York Post reported in 2013 that Noor’s family had a fortune ‘estimated to be in the high nine-figures.’

Over the years, Noor has built up an impressive circle of high-profile friends – including Imagine Entertainment chairman Brian Grazer, 73, and his wife Veronica, with whom she regularly posts photos on her Instagram account.

She also often flaunts her lavish jet-set lifestyle to her 80,000 followers, sharing glimpses into luxury trips to places like Capri and Saint-Tropez.

In 2022, she shared a number of snaps of herself staying in opulent locations including Cap d’Antibes – where she spent time at fashion designer Jean Pigozzi’s private villa.

And other photos see her posing with a number of her A-list pals, including Sienna Miller, Timothée Chalamet, and Kelly Rutherford.

Noor is also often spotted eating at popular LA restaurants and partying at glamorous hotspots – including the well-known sushi eatery Nobu, which is often visited by the Kardashians.

    What does Noor Alfallah do?

Noor studied at the UCLA School of Film and Television, before going on to secure a job as a film producer.

She is currently working as the vice president of Lynda Obst Productions at Sony, and is also reportedly developing two feature films with Obst.

The VP, along with her sister Remi, reportedly struck a pod-producing deal with Imagine Entertainment chairman Brian Grazer in 2021.

Most recently, Noor was a producer on the controversial Donald Trump biopic, The Apprentice, from director Ali Abbas.

The critically acclaimed film, which was theatrically released last week, stars Sebastian Stan as the younger incarnation of the divisive Donald Trump during the 1970s and 1980s.

Succession star Jeremy Strong plays Trump’s late lawyer and mentor Roy Cohn, while Oscar-nominated actress Maria Bakalova, who plays Trump’s late ex-wife Ivana Trump.

On Tuesday, Noor shared a string of snaps promoting the film on Instagram, including from a meal out with Al, Jeremy and Ali, in addition to a clip featuring Bill talking about the movie on his show.

She is also juggling her film career with motherhood, having primary physical custody of one-year-old Roman.

In March, she gushed to Vogue Arabia that parenthood is ‘the greatest blessing in my life,’ and ‘Roman has just been the greatest gift from God.’

She said her son is ‘a thousand times better than what I ever thought he would be’ and added: ‘Becoming a mom – to be honest – it’s greater than I could ever imagine.’

When did Noor Alfallah date Al Pacino?

Noor and Al were first romantically linked in April 2022,  and were said to have started dating during COVID-19 lockdown.

Sharing a 54-year age difference, Noor was 28 and Al, 81, at the time and a photo of the couple from a dinner with Jason Momoa quickly went viral.

A source told Page Six: ‘Pacino and Noor started seeing each other during the pandemic. She mostly dates very rich older men, she was with Mick Jagger for a while, and then she dated Nicholas Berggruen,’ the source said.

‘She has been with Al for some time and they get on very well. The age gap doesn’t seem to be a problem, even though he is older than her father.’

They added: ‘She moves with the wealthy jet-set crowd, and she comes from a family with money.’

Noor revealed in Vogue Arabia that they both met at a dinner party in the late 2010s and became friends.

She admitted: ‘He’s a very talented and unique person. But I had no intention of thinking like, oh, he is going to be my son’s father one day.

‘Al lives down the street from my house and we started spending every day together, playing chess and watching movies. It was like film school with Al Pacino. I guess it just became something more.’

There were reports that the couple had split in September 2022, before reps for the actor insisted: ‘They’re still together.’

Representatives for The Godfather star then confirmed that they were welcoming their first child together, just one month before she was set to give birth.

They welcomed son Roman in June 2023, making Al one of the oldest fathers in history.

Roman is his fourth child – sharing 34-year-old Julie with Jan Tarrant and 23-year-old twins Anton and Olivia with Beverly D’Angelo, who he dated from 1997 to 2003.

Soon after welcoming their son, Noor filed for custody of Roman the following September.

A Los Angeles judge ruled that Al has to pay Noor around $30,000 a month in child support for their son, according to documents obtained by Page Six.

The Scarface star was first ordered to pay her a $110,000 payment, on top of the monthly payments, as well as $13,000 for a night nurse, along with any medical bills that aren’t covered by health insurance.

He is also to make a yearly $15,000 deposit into an education fund for Roman and as part of the ruling, the pair have joint legal custody, with Noor having primary physical custody.

The pair have maintained an amicable relationship since the split, with Noor recently taking to her Instagram to promote Al’s upcoming memoir Sonny Boy and earlier this month, Al confirmed that the pair are ‘just friends’.

When asked if he’s currently in a relationship at the start of October, the actor told People: ‘No. I have friendship.’

His rep further clarified: ‘Al and Noor are very good friends, have been for years, and are co-parents to their son Roman.’

    Who are Noor Alfallah’s ex-boyfriends?

Al is not the first high-profile man Noor has dated and a source previously told Page Six that she ‘mostly dates very rich older men.’

She previously hit the headlines for enjoying a tryst with legendary rocker Mick Jagger, 81, back in October 2017.

Noor and Mick were spotting enjoying a number of romantic dates while the Rolling Stones star was in France for the band’s No Filter tour.

At the time, sources said that Mick first hooked up with the socialite in a private flat in the suburbs of Paris, with a chauffeur then taking the brunette beauty back to her hotel the following day.

They enjoyed more romantic evenings in the days that followed – including dinner at the Caviar Kaspia with the Stones’ backing crew and a private meal at La Stresa.

Noor was also in attendance when the band played the city’s U Arena and the day after the gig, the Satisfaction singer was seen arriving at his new squeeze’s hotel.

‘Mick still has his legendary charm but even the band were surprised someone as young and beautiful as Noor came to Paris to see him,’ an insider told DailyMail.com at the time.

‘They are both single and seemed to have a lot of fun together, so everyone just let them get on with it.

‘Mick is showing absolutely no sign of slowing down. He certainly had a smile on his face and famous twinkle in his eye.

‘Noor is very confident and well educated so she fitted in well at all the upmarket places they went together.’

However, despite sources saying that they were ‘both single’ at the time, their budding romance caused quite the stir after Mick’s spokesperson insisted that he was still in a relationship with Melanie Hamrick – who he had been dating since 2014 and was the mother of his eighth and youngest child, Deveraux.

It’s been said that Mick and Noor got together while he was still Melanie, and stayed together long after he and Melanie broke off their relationship – through much of 2017 and 2018.

In April 2018, Noor took to Instagram to share a throwback shot that showed Mick hugging her tightly from behind as they posed alongside Ronnie Wood and his wife, Sally Humphreys.

Captioning the pic, she wrote: ‘Same time last year! Miss you guys!’

Eventually, things fizzled out between them, and while speaking to Hello! two years later, Noor – who was 22 when she dated the then-74 rock star – addressed their large age gap.

She said that despite all the negative ‘comments’ she received about it from people online, she ‘didn’t regret it’ and ‘had many great memories’ with Mick.

‘Our ages didn’t matter to me,’ she insisted. ‘The heart doesn’t know what it sees, it only knows what it feels. It was my first serious relationship, but it was a happy time for me.’

She revealed that they had been introduced at a dinner party weeks earlier, after being invited by her close friend Sally, and had managed to keep their burgeoning relationship out of the public eye until they were spotted in Paris during the tour.

Noor also previously found love with billionaire philanthropist Nicolas Burggruen, 63, after being spotted having lunch together in April 2018.

The son of an art collector and an actress, Nicolas, who previously escorted supermodel Claudia Schiffer, was schooled in Switzerland but made his fortune in America, mostly in property.

At the time of their first sighting together, sources claimed that Noor was still in a relationship with Mick.

However, by August of that year it appeared that she and Nicolas were going strong because she couldn’t stop gushing over him on social media.

She posted a picture of herself and Nicolas in honor of his birthday, wishing her ‘partner in crime’ a great day, adding: ‘So happy I get to celebrate with you.’

Throughout the summer, they were spotted jetting off on numerous romantic getaways to Capri, Italy, and Saint-Tropez, France, and continued to share PDA-filled snaps on Instagram.

In October, Noor and Nicolas were spotted at an art exhibition together in Los Angeles, and one month later, she posted a snap of herself hanging out with Nicolas and her younger brother while celebrating her birthday.

She continued to share snaps with him throughout 2019, with it being unclear when exactly the pair split, with them last being pictured publicly together in early 2020.

The youngest man Noor has been publicly linked to is actor and film director Eli Roth, 52, who she was linked to two months after he split from his wife Lorenza Izzo.

Rumours started to circulate that they were dating in 2018, after they both attended the same wedding reception in Malibu.

In the weeks that followed, the two were spotted on a series of dates together, and during one outing, the Noor was even photographed linking arms with the director as they put on a loved-up display on the way to a California-based restaurant.

But as the outings occurred around the same time that she was linked to Nicolas, it’s still unclear whether or not Noor and Eli ever actually dated or if they were just friends.

Another rumoured tryst of Noor’s is the legendary actor and director Clint Eastwood, 94, who she was thought to be dating in January 2019.

Speculation began when the Oscar-winning star was pictured heading off from a night out together with Noor at celeb hotspot Craig’s in West Hollywood.

Noor was seen in the backseat of Clint’s car, just day after he was spotted with her parents outside of Nobu in Malibu.

However, when asked about the rumored romance, Noor was keen to insist that Clint was just a family friend, telling DailyMail.com: ‘There is no relationship.’

‘We’re not dating. There is no relationship. We’re family friends, and my family was there and that’s it.

‘My parents were there, other friends were there. Trust me there’s no relationship.’

Hezbollah leader vows retaliation against Israel for attacks on devices as both sides trade strikes

BEIRUT — The leader of Hezbollah vowed Thursday to keep up daily strikes on Israel despite this week’s deadly sabotage of its members’ communication devices, and said Israelis displaced from homes near the Lebanon border because of the fighting would not be able to return until the war in Gaza ends.

Hezbollah and Israel launched fresh attacks across the border as Hassan Nasrallah spoke for the first time since the mass bombing of devices in Lebanon and Syria that he described as a “severe blow” — and for which he promised to retaliate.

The two days of attacks targeting thousands of Hezbollah pagers and walkie-talkies have been widely blamed on Israel, heightening fears that 11 months of near-daily exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israel will escalate into all-out war. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in the attacks.

During Nasrallah’s speech, Hezbollah struck at least four times in northern Israel, and two Israeli soldiers were killed in a strike earlier in the day. Israeli warplanes flew low over Beirut while Nasrallah spoke and broke the sound barrier, scattering birds and prompting people in houses and offices to quickly open windows to prevent them from shattering.

Israel also launched attacks in southern Lebanon on Thursday, saying it struck hundreds of rocket launchers and other Hezbollah infrastructure, though it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties. The army claimed the launchers were about to be used “in the immediate future.”

At the same time, the army ordered residents in parts of the Golan Heights and northern Israel to avoid public gatherings, minimize movements and stay close to shelters in anticipation of possible rocket fire.

In recent weeks, Israeli leaders have stepped-up warnings of a potential larger military operation against Hezbollah, saying they are determined to stop the group’s fire to allow tens of thousands of Israelis to return to homes near the border.

In a Thursday briefing, the Israeli defense minister said Hezbollah would “pay an increasing price” as Israel seeks to make conditions near its border with Lebanon safe enough for residents to return.

“The sequence of our military actions will continue,” he said.

The attack on electronic devices appeared to be the culmination of a monthslong operation by Israel to target as many Hezbollah members as possible all at once — but civilians were also hit. At least 37 people were killed, including two children, and some 3,000 wounded in the explosions Tuesday and Wednesday.

Nasrallah said the group is investigating how the bombings were carried out.

“Yes, we were subjected to a huge and severe blow,” he said. “The enemy crossed all boundaries and red lines,” he said. Pointing to the number of pagers and walkie-talkies, he accused Israel of intending to kill thousands of people at one time. “The enemy will face a severe and fair punishment from where they expect and don’t expect.”

He said Hezbollah will continue its barrages into northern Israel as long as the war in Gaza continues, vowing that Israel will not be able to bring its people back to the border region. “The only way is stop the aggression on the people of Gaza and the West Bank,” he said. “Neither strikes, nor assassinations nor an all-out war will achieve that.”

Earlier Thursday, Hezbollah said it had targeted three Israeli military positions near the border, two of them with drones. Israeli hospitals reported eight people lightly or moderately injured.

Hezbollah says its near daily fire is a show of support for Hamas. Israel’s 11-month-old war with Hamas in Gaza began after its militants led the Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

Israel has responded to Hezbollah’s attacks with strikes in southern Lebanon, and has struck senior figures from the group in the capital Beirut. The exchanges have killed hundreds in Lebanon and dozens in Israel and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents on each side of the border.

Israel and Hezbollah have repeatedly pulled back from an all-out war under heavy pressure from the United States, France and other countries.

But in their recent warnings, Israeli leaders have said they are determined to change the status quo dramatically.

Speaking to Israeli troops on Wednesday, Gallant said, “We are at the start of a new phase in the war — it requires courage, determination and perseverance.” He made no mention of the exploding devices but praised the work of Israel’s army and security agencies, saying “the results are very impressive.”

He said that after months of fighting Hamas in Gaza, “the center of gravity is shifting to the north by diverting resources and forces.”

Israel began moving more troops to its border with Lebanon on Wednesday as a precautionary measure, Israeli officials said. Israel’s army chief, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, said plans have been drawn up for additional action against Hezbollah, though media reported the government has not yet decided whether to launch a major offensive in Lebanon.

Lebanon is still reeling from the deadly device attacks of Tuesday and Wednesday.

The explosions have rattled anxious Lebanese fearing a full-scale war. The Lebanese Army said it has been locating and detonating suspicious pagers and communication devices, while the country’s civil aviation authorities banned pagers and walkie-talkies on all airplanes departing from Beirut’s international airport until further notice.

The attack was likely to severely disrupt Hezbollah’s internal communication as it scrambles to determine safe means to talk to each other. Hezbollah announced the death of five combatants Thursday, but didn’t specify if they were killed in the explosions or on the front lines.

The blasts went off wherever the holders of the pagers or walkie-talkies happened to be in multiple parts of Beirut and eastern and southern Lebanon — in homes and cars, grocery stores and cafes and on the street, even at a funeral for some killed in the bombings, often with family and other bystanders nearby.

Many suffered gaping wounds on their legs, abdomens and faces or were maimed in the hand. Tuesday’s pager blasts killed 12 people, including two children, and wounded some 2,300 others. The following day’s explosion killed 25 and wounded more than 600, Health Minister Firas Abiad said, giving updated figures.

Abiad told reporters that Wednesday’s injuries were more severe than the previous day as walkie-talkies that exploded were bigger than the pagers. He praised Lebanon’s hospitals, saying they had managed to deal with the flood of wounded within hours. “It was an indiscriminate attack. It was a war crime,” he said.
