    Disney Q4 bolstered by strong results from streaming, ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

    Disney’s fourth-quarter adjusted profit beat Wall Street’s expectations, bolstered by strong results from its streaming service and box office success with “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

    Disney earned $460 million, or 25 cents per share, for the period ended Sept. 28. A year earlier the Burbank, California-based company earned $264 million, or 14 cents per share.

    Removing certain items, earnings were $1.14 per share. This topped the $1.09 per share that analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research were looking for.

    Shares jumped more than 9% before the market open on Thursday.

    Revenue climbed 6% to $22.57 billion, but fell a bit short of Wall Street’s estimate of $22.59 billion.

    Operating income for the entertainment segment, which includes its movie studio and parts of its television wing, more than quadrupled to $1.07 billion.

    This was helped in part by a strong performance from its content/sales, licensing and other segment, which benefited from $316 million in operating income from “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

    The Walt Disney Co. said Thursday that its direct-to-consumer business, which includes Disney+ and Hulu, reported quarterly operating income of $253 million compared with an operating loss of $420 million a year earlier. Revenue rose 15% to $5.78 billion.

    The combined streaming businesses, which includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, achieved profitability for the first time in the third quarter.

    Disney+ saw a 2% increase in paid subscribers domestically, which includes the U.S. and Canada. It had a 5% rise internationally, which excludes Disney+ HotStar.

    Disney ended the quarter with 174 million Disney+ Core and Hulu subscriptions, and more than 120 million Disney+ Core paid subscribers, an increase of 4.4 million over the prior quarter.

    Disney said that its improved direct-to-consumer business results were due in part to subscription revenue growth thanks to increased in retail pricing and subscriber growth. Advertising revenue also increased and marketing costs at Disney+ declined.

    “This was a pivotal and successful year for The Walt Disney Company, and thanks to the significant progress we’ve made, we have emerged from a period of considerable challenges and disruption well positioned for growth and optimistic about our future,” CEO Bob Iger said in a statement.

    Iger was confident about the future of Disney’s streaming platform on the company’s conference call, noting that whenever Disney has success with a movie, or there’s expected success for a movie, like with “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the viewership for previous films, like “Inside Out” and “Deadpool,” spikes significantly on its streaming service. Iger anticipates this trend will continue in the future.

    Mike Proulx, Forrester vice president, research director, is also upbeat on Disney’s streaming business.

    “Disney’s very strong quarter, once again, proves that content is what matters most,” he said in an emailed statement. “With better-than-expected subscriber growth and improved profitability, Disney’s streaming business seems to have turned the emerging media corner to cement itself as a maturing growth driver for the future of Disney’s business.”

    The Experiences division, which includes six global theme parks, its cruise line, merchandise and videogame licensing, reported operating income dropped 6% to $1.7 billion. While operating income improved at domestic parks and Experiences, it fell for international parks and Experiences.

    Disney previously forecast that its fourth-quarter Experiences operating income would fall by mid single digits compared with the prior-year period due to domestic parks moderation as well as cyclical softening in China and less people at Disneyland Paris due to the impact the Olympics had on normal consumer travel.

    Looking ahead, Disney anticipates high-single digit adjusted earnings per share growth for fiscal 2025. The company predicts double digit earnings per share growth for fiscal 2026 and 2027.

    Last month Disney said that it was tapping Morgan Stanley executive James Gorman to serve as its next chairman, beginning early next year. The entertainment giant also announced that it anticipates naming its new CEO in early 2026.

    Gorman will become chairman on Jan. 2, 2025. He will succeed Mark Parker, who is leaving after serving on Disney’s board for nine years.

    Disney is searching for a new CEO to succeed Bob Iger. Iger came back to Disney in 2022 after a period of clashes, missteps and a weakening financial performance at the company under his chosen successor, Bob Chapek.

    Gorman said in a statement in October that by naming Disney’s next CEO in 2026, it “will allow ample time for a successful transition before the conclusion of Bob Iger’s contract in December 2026.”

    Disney is continuing to review internal and external candidates for the CEO position.

    In April shareholders rebuffed efforts by activist investor Nelson Peltz to claim seats on the company board, standing firmly behind Iger as he tries to energize the company after a rough stretch.

    In June Disney asked a federal appellate court to dismiss its lawsuit against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis after his appointees approved a deal with the company on how Walt Disney World will be developed over the next two decades, ending the last piece of conflict between the two sides.

    As part of the 15-year deal, Disney agreed to invest $17 billion into Disney World over the next two decades and the district committed to making infrastructure improvement on the theme park resort’s property.

    Berlin, 5 November 2024 // Zalando recorded strong growth in both its growth vectors Business-to-Consumer (B2C) and Business-to-Business (B2B) in the third quarter, driven by increasing consumer demand amid an industry-wide strong start to the autumn/winter season. To capture further growth opportunities, the company is investing in key areas of its ecosystem strategy, such as driving customer loyalty, expanding lifestyle propositions, making fashion discovery more entertaining, and further strengthening its European logistics network.

    Zalando’s third-quarter gross merchandise volume (GMV) rose 7.8% to 3.5 billion euros compared with a year ago, revenue increased 5.0% to 2.4 billion euros and adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (adjusted EBIT) climbed from 23 million euros to 93 million euros. The adjusted EBIT margin increased by 2.9 percentage points to 3.9%. The number of active customers increased by about half a million quarter on quarter, bringing the total number of active customers to 50.3 million in the third quarter.

    B2C: New Brands, Rewarding Loyalty and Lifestyle Growth

    For Zalando’s first B2C growth pillar, aiming to differentiate itself through quality and offer the best possible shopping experience, the company added new brands like Remain, A-COLD-WALL*, and Marine Serre to its curated lineup. Zalando also evolved its Plus program from a paid membership to a free, points-based system designed to reward customer loyalty.

    In France, Zalando’s new fulfilment centre near Paris shipped its first parcel at the start of October. This latest addition to Zalando’s logistic network helps to provide customers across France and neighbouring countries with even more localised offerings and convenience.

    Zalando’s second B2C growth pillar around making Zalando a lifestyle destination saw strong growth in Sports, Beauty, and Kids & Family. The company is working to elevate these categories into powerful lifestyle propositions with comprehensive assortments, personalised inspiration, and seamless convenience. Zalando’s partners continued to increase their own sales generated via the company’s platform, with the partner business recording double-digit growth in the third quarter.

    For the third B2C growth pillar – introducing new content formats into commerce and offering personalised inspiration and entertainment – the company further evolved Stories on Zalando, the content hub that engages customers around exciting fashion and culture trends. Fashion influencers like Caro Daur, Linda Tol, and Jordan Anderson are now offering exclusive content and showcasing their curated fashion selections.

    In line with its commitment to enhance customer experiences, Zalando continued to invest in technologies such as the Zalando Assistant that has been rolled out to all 25 markets recently.
    Zalando’s AI assistant, powered by Zalando’s own models and OpenAI’s large language models, offers logged-in customers personalised fashion advice in local languages, enabling customers to navigate Zalando’s extensive assortment with intuitive queries such as“What should I wear to my dad’s 60th birthday in November in Barcelona?” The assistant understands context – such as location, weather, and occasion – to make informed recommendations.

    Revenue in the B2C growth vector rose 4.3% to 2.2 billion euros in the third quarter compared with the same period a year ago. Adjusted EBIT rose to 86.7 million euros, representing an adjusted EBIT margin of 4.0% in the quarter compared to 0.5% a year prior, driven by improved gross margins and lower fulfilment costs.

    B2B: Expanding value proposition for partners

    In B2B, Zalando is opening up its logistics infrastructure, software, and service capabilities to be a key enabler for brands’ and retailers’ e-commerce transactions, regardless of whether they take place on or off the Zalando platform.

    In the third quarter, ZEOS added ASOS as a new sales channel, expanding the value proposition for Zalando’s partners. In total, ZEOS can now fulfil orders that were placed via 9 major e-commerce platforms and brands’ own webshops.

    In the third quarter, revenue in the B2B growth vector continued to outgrow group revenues and increased 11.1% to 239.7 million euros compared with a year ago. Adjusted EBIT fell from 12.6 million euros a year ago to 6.7 million euros, representing an adjusted EBIT margin of 2.8%, compared to 5.8% a year prior. The decrease was mainly caused by frontloaded investments to support future growth.

    Outlook

    Today, Zalando confirmed its guidance, which was upgraded on 10 October 2024, for the financial year 2024. The company expects gross merchandise volume (GMV) to grow between 3% and 5%, revenue to increase between 2% and 5% and adjusted EBIT to grow to between 440 million euros and 480 million euros.

    The third-quarter 2024 financial report, as well as the earnings presentation for analysts and investors, is available on the Zalando Investor Relations website . Zalando will report the results for the full year 2024 on 6 March 2025.

    Offshore wind industry says ‘misinformation’ from foes is a strong headwind it must fight

    ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The U.S offshore wind energy industry says it needs to fight back against disinformation being spread by opponents of wind farms.

    During the first day of a national offshore wind conference Tuesday in New Jersey, which has become ground zero for vocal, well-organized opposition to such projects, numerous industry officials said they are in a difficult battle against deliberate falsehoods.

    These include thus far unsubstantiated claims that offshore wind preparation is killing whales along the East Coast.

    “We know it wasn’t us, and we have the research to back it up,” said Crystal Pruitt, an external affairs official with Atlantic Shores, which plans two offshore wind farms off the New Jersey coast. “But the hardest thing to do is prove a negative.”

    She said the industry needs to publicly push back against disinformation.

    “If you’re telling me that the hum from turbines 10 to 12 miles off the beach is going to cause me to go insane, that is not real, and someone needs to say that,” Pruitt said.

    Paulina O’Connor, executive director of the New Jersey Offshore Wind Alliance, said she and others in the industry have met with opponents to give them facts about the industry.

    “I don’t think we’re getting through to them,” she said. “I don’t feel like we’re having that breakthrough. It’s hard to predict what crazy thing they’re going to come up with.”

    Last year, amid a spate of whale deaths along the East Coast, offshore wind opponents began linking them to survey work to prepare the ocean floor for wind turbines

    But numerous federal and local agencies say there is no evidence tying offshore wind to the deaths of the whales, many of which showed signs of having been struck by ships.

    Alicia Gene Artessa, director of the New York Offshore Wind Alliance, likened trying to counter disinformation about offshore wind to playing a game of whack-a-mole.

    “Every time you feel you have some local opposition under control, they come up with a new topic and start pumping money into that,” she said.

    One of the most vocal opposition groups, Protect Our Coast NJ, whose members held up anti-offshore wind signs as they picketed outside the hall where Tuesday’s conference was held, said the industry is the party peddling untruths.

    “We are appalled by the gaslighting of our movement without evidence by shills for the climate industry who hope to cash in if offshore wind becomes a reality,” said Robin Shaffer, the group’s president. “This is a case of accusing our group of the very thing that they themselves are doing, muddying the waters, dispensing disinformation to the unwitting public.”

    The stakes are high for an industry making uneven progress toward goals of having at least 20% of the nation’s electricity come from offshore wind by 2035.

    The American Clean Power Association says there is almost 65 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity under development in the U.S., enough to power over 26 million homes.

    But several high-profile projects have been scrapped, including two in New Jersey that Danish wind giant Orsted pulled the plug on a year ago. And a turbine blade failure at the Vineyard Wind project off Martha’s Vineyard this summer has only reinforced a belief among opponents that offshore wind is unstable and uneconomical.

    Jerry Leeman, CEO of the New England Fishermen’s Stewardship Association, decried the announcement Tuesday that the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management chosen two developers to build offshore wind on four lease sites in the Gulf of Maine, calling it “a rushed regulatory process” that failed to take into account the turbine failure at Vineyard Wind.

    “Vineyard Wind is a slow-rolling disaster,” he said. “It is now obvious that foreign mega-developers and their political allies cut corners to bring their flagship project online.”

    J. Timmons Roberts, a Brown University researcher who has studied offshore wind opposition groups, said the dynamic has shifted from denying climate change to trying to discredit solutions to it.

    “When I saw the rise of these groups in Rhode Island, I was very upset,” he said. “All the arguments I’m seeing are sensationalized or just outright false,” including claims that wind farms would actually cause carbon dioxide levels to increase. He added the industry has to do much better making its case on social media.

    Strong Second Half Leads Field Hockey Past Goucher, 6-1

    TOWSON, MD – A big second half performance propelled The University of Scranton field hockey team to a victory over Goucher College by a score of 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Beldon Field.

    The Basics

    • Final Score: Scranton 6, Goucher 1
    • Records: Scranton (12-2, 3-1 LC); Goucher (6-7, 1-3 LC)
    • The Royals are now 18-0 against Goucher all time. 

    How it Happened

    • Graduate student Katie Redding got the scoring started for the Royals, taking a rebound off the stick of senior Reagan Dolan and finding the back of the cage, giving Scranton the 1-0 lead. 
    • In the sixth minute of the second quarter, it was once again Dolan who this time fired a crosser into the circle where graduate student Bridget Abraldes was positioned to redirect the shot past the keeper to extend the Royals lead to two goals.
    • Goucher got on the board in the opening minutes of the third quarter when Camden West snuck a shot past senior goalie Julie Rogel to cut the Royals lead to 2-1.
    • With 3:42 left to play in the third quarter, graduate student Elle Collins redirected a pass from Dolan into the cage on a corner attempt, extending the Royals lead back to two goals.
    • Scranton added another goal within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Redding passed from the center of the circle backward to Dolan, who buried the shot from the top of the circle to put the Royals ahead 4-1.
    • The Royals continued to add on in the fourth. This time it was Redding taking the ball into the circle through traffic and finding her classmate Abraldes, who scored her second goal of the day to make it 5-1.
    • The Royals scored their sixth and final goal of the game late in the fourth quarter. When senior Kaitlyn McNamara poked in a pass from classmate Abbie Hoyle for the score. This was the first career goal for McNamara.

    Top Performers

    • Abraldes led the team with two goals.
    • Dolan recorded a career-high three assists, while also scoring one goal.
    • Redding scored one goal and registered two assists.

    Inside the Box Score

    • Scranton held a convincing 33-7 advantage in shots and a 19-5 edge in shots on goal.
    • The Royals held a 15-4 edge in corner attempts.

    Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra review: A strong contender for the ‘Ultra’ lifestyle

    When Samsung unveiled its first premium outdoor fitness watch, the Galaxy Watch Ultra, it was clear the tech giant was taking a shot at the likes of Garmin and Apple’s outdoor adventure offerings. Naturally, I was intrigued. Having worn my Apple Watch Ultra 2 for quite some time, I was curious about how Samsung’s take on the premium fitness smartwatch would hold up—especially when worn side by side with Apple’s flagship.

    After a month of near-daily wear and comparison with my Apple Watch Ultra 2, I found myself impressed by the Galaxy Watch Ultra’s ambition but slightly underwhelmed by some aspects. Here’s why.

    The Looks: Sleek and Strong

    Let’s start with the obvious: the Galaxy Watch Ultra is a beauty. Samsung has gone all-in on the rugged aesthetic with a 47mm titanium case and a sapphire crystal face. It’s built to endure the great outdoors, whether you’re diving, hiking, or biking. Water resistance up to 10 ATM? Check. IP68 rating for dust and water resistance? Double-check. It even boasts the ability to withstand temperatures as high as 55 degrees Celsius and elevations up to 9,000 metres (no, I didn’t hike Everest to confirm).

    That said, the Galaxy Watch Ultra’s design, while striking, is also oddly reminiscent of its main competitor, Apple. The orange band feels distinctly familiar, and the side button bears an uncanny resemblance to Apple’s Action button. Even the Double Pinch gesture feels like a riff on Apple’s Double Tap feature. But hey, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

    In terms of looks, Samsung has nailed it. However, if you’re looking for something more visually distinctive than the Apple Watch Ultra, you might find it a tad derivative.

    Performance and Features

    Functionally, the Galaxy Watch Ultra performs well. It tracks a plethora of activities and provides detailed metrics, much like its competitors. However, having switched between my Apple Watch Ultra 2 and this, I immediately noticed a few limitations.

    Navigation on the Galaxy Watch Ultra can be a bit tricky. I often found myself swiping through several menus before finding the feature I needed, whether it was Track Back or checking my heart rate. The Apple Watch’s interface feels far more intuitive in this regard. There’s room for improvement, and it feels like something that future updates could streamline, but for now, it’s a slight hindrance.

    Battery Life: Good, but Could Be Better

    Now, battery life is always a critical aspect of any outdoor fitness watch, and here’s where I wish Samsung would’ve pushed the boundaries a bit more. The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s battery life is decent at about two days, which is great for a smartwatch but not quite up to scratch for a serious weekend camping trip. With Power Saving mode on, you can squeeze out about 3-5 days, but even then, it’s far below what you’d get from a Garmin, for example. For someone like me, who tends to forget to charge things until they’re on their last 10%, this was a slight letdown.

    Health Insights: The AGEs Dilemma

    One of Samsung’s standout features is its Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) index. While the science behind it is intriguing—measuring these products can help assess risks for conditions like diabetes or stroke—it’s still very experimental. For now, it feels like more of a novelty than a game-changing health feature. 

    Body composition measurements, on the other hand, were fairly consistent and helpful. My readings aligned with what I typically expect as a health-conscious individual, and they stayed steady over the testing period. But again, there’s nothing here that dramatically surpasses what’s already on the market.

    Sleep Tracking: Penguins and Puppies

    Samsung’s sleep-tracking features are impressive, especially the “sleep animal” profiles that give you fun insights into your sleep habits. As someone who often wakes up during the night (thanks to my puppy, who seems to think my pillow is her personal playground), I was identified as a “penguin,” which was surprisingly accurate. It’s a nice touch, though not a revolutionary one—Fitbit has been doing this for a while.

    Sports and Adventure: Missing a Few Key Plays

    The Galaxy Watch Ultra is clearly designed with the adventurer in mind, with dual-band GPS, a compass, and Track Back features. As an outdoor enthusiast, I appreciated these, but they aren’t quite as intuitive or well-integrated as on the Apple Watch Ultra. Finding them during an activity was often more cumbersome than it should be.

    While it has plenty of useful metrics like cadence and vertical oscillation, it’s missing a few of the sports features that make the Apple Watch Ultra stand out, such as diving. If you’re big into water sports, you’ll probably find this lacking compared to Apple’s ecosystem.

    Connectivity and Compatibility: Android Bias

    Here’s where things get a bit tricky. As an Android user, you’ll likely have a great experience with the Galaxy Watch Ultra, especially if you’re on a Samsung phone. However, if you’re using a non-Samsung Android, or worse, switching from an iPhone like I did, the experience becomes a little fragmented.

    Certain features, like the ECG, are only available with a Samsung phone. And while the watch syncs up with apps like Google Fit, Samsung Health is really the optimal partner here, which limits its appeal to non-Samsung users. It doesn’t help that Samsung still lacks the seamless satellite messaging or connectivity features that the Apple ecosystem offers.  

    The Verdict: A Solid First Attempt

    There’s no denying that the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra is a well-built, highly capable outdoor fitness watch. But after testing it extensively, sometimes alongside my Apple Watch Ultra 2, it feels more like a promising work in progress than a market leader.

    Samsung has plenty of potential to catch up in future iterations, and for Android users, this is one of the best options available right now. However, if you’re coming from the Apple Watch ecosystem, especially if you’re deep into outdoor adventures, you might find it hard to switch fully. 

    The Galaxy Watch Ultra is a solid debut, but it’s not quite the category disruptor it could be – at least, not yet.

    Birmingham City boss Chris Davies chose to highlight Charlton Athletic’s summer spending after his side were beaten 1-0 at The Valley on Saturday.




    It has been a brilliant start to management for the former Spurs assistant, who had yet to taste defeat as Blues boss in the league since his appointment.

    However, the team fell to a first defeat of the campaign in the capital, with a Matty Godden effort ensuring Nathan Jones’ side deservedly picked up all three points.

    That was a huge result for the Addicks, as they were coming up against a Blues side that are the most expensively assembled in League One history.

    However, Charlton defended resolutely, and they were rewarded for their good performance with that second-half goal.

    And, speaking after the game, Birmingham boss Davies was quick to point out that whilst a lot is mentioned around how much Blues spent this summer, Charlton have also invested into their squad over the years.


    He said: “Absolutely, again, Charlton spent a fortune. They’ve spent a lot of money on their squad and they’re a good team so there’s no doubt in my mind that there are multiple teams in this league that are well equipped to be successful.

    We are one of those teams, it’s not Birmingham and the rest. It’s League One. Every game is a different challenge for us that we have to face, and we have to prove how good we are every single game.

    It was one of those games, only one shot on goal. It’s unusual for us, I think that’s the first time that’s happened this season. I think in the final third we normally have a little more creativity and a little more danger when we get there.

    This comment will no doubt have raised a few eyebrows, as the Birmingham boss talking about other clubs’ spending, given their summer was not going to go down well.

    But, this is just Davies’ way of taking the pressure off his players. Blues are probably bored with the constant references to their summer spending, and we know that it doesn’t guarantee success, so this is the manager reminding others that their rivals also have good players.

    Ultimately, Saturday was a poor performance by Blues, and there’s no denying that the better side won.

    Birmingham City must bounce back

    You can be sure that Davies won’t be getting carried away with the loss, and nor should he. He will still have full faith in his side, and the reality is that Saturday was just a bad day at the office, and credit should go to Charlton for the way they played on the day.

    Marta explains how she became a tennis player. “My mom was working a lot when I was small and, I don’t remember it, but my mom told me that I wanted to play tennis so much so I could see her. I have two more sisters, one older and one younger. I was in the middle but it was the period when my mom was working so much as a coach. I didn’t see mom that much. I wanted to see her a lot, so I was practicing. In the summer I was on the court from 8 in the morning to 8 in the evening, from when I was 4 or 5. At the same time I was doing pairs acrobatics, from 5 to 11. We finished fourth place in the national championships,” she told WTA Tour. “Tennis was the main goal, so I decided to stop acrobatics. I had to be so careful with my weight and it was so much stress. Evey day I was coming from school worrying about my weight. When I was 11, I decided to stop.”

    Marta enjoys swimming. Swimming is a good way to get regular aerobic physical activity, according to the CDC. Just two and a half hours per week of aerobic physical activity, such as swimming, bicycling, or running, can decrease the risk of chronic illnesses. In addition to the many physical benefits, there are multiple studies supporting the mental health benefits of swimming as well. 

    Marta also enjoys stand up paddleboarding. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) agrees that paddle boarding is great for the core and also a great form of cardio. The water sport can burn an average of 385 calories for a 140 pound male and 436 for a female the same size, per a study conducted by Arizona State University.

    To get her body ready for the court, Marta spends time in the gym strength training. “Warmed up? Yeah, dead,” she captioned a post. According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

    • Sharpen your thinking skills

    Another stay-fit in the water activity of Marta’s? Surfing. According to the Australian government’s Better Health, surfing provides many health benefits including cardiovascular fitness from paddling, shoulder and back strength, which also strengthens from the paddling, and leg and core strength. “Once you’re standing up on the board, strong legs and a strong core will keep you up,” they say.
