    Mexico study’s surprising finding: Killer heat hit harder for the young than the elderly

    A surprising study of temperature-related deaths in Mexico upends conventional thinking about what age group is hit hardest by heat. Researchers found at higher temperatures and humidity, the heat kills far more young people under 35 than those older than 50.

    For decades, health and weather experts have warned that the elderly and the youngest children were most vulnerable in heat waves. But this study looking at all deaths in Mexico from 1998 to 2019 shows that when the combination of humidity and temperature reach uncomfortable levels, such as the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit (around 30 degrees Celsius) and 50% relative humidity, there were nearly 32 temperature-related deaths of people 35 years old for every temperature-related death of someone 50 and older.

    The study in Friday’s journal Science Advances shows an especially surprising spike of heat-related deaths in an age group thought to be young and robust: People between 18 and 35. That age group alone had nine times as many temperature-related deaths as those older than 50.

    Study authors and outside experts are scrambling to figure out why. Demographics alone don’t explain why more young adult Mexicans are dying in high heat than their elders. Two theories: Outdoor workers who can’t escape the heat, and young people who don’t know their limits.

    The trend is likely to widen as the world warms from human-caused climate change, according to computer simulations run by the study team.

    “We found that younger people are especially vulnerable to humid heat,” study co-author Jeffrey Shrader, a climate economist at Columbia University, said. “As the climate warms, we’re really going to be shifting the burden of temperature-related mortality towards younger individuals and away from older individuals who tend to be more vulnerable to cold temperatures.”

    Data from cold weather shows more than 300 deaths of Mexican residents 50 and older for every young person dying from cold temperatures, according to the study.

    “People of all ages are increasingly at risk from the rising temperatures, and this study shows that those that we might have considered relatively safe from heat-related adverse health outcomes might not be so much so,” said Marina Romanello, executive director of the Lancet Countdown that monitors health effects of climate change. She was not part of the study team.

    “Heat is a much more dangerous silent killer than most people acknowledge it to be, and that heat is increasingly putting our health and survival at risk,” Romanello said in an email.

    Study authors decided to examine weather-related deaths in Mexico because that country not only has detailed mortality data, but it has a variety of different climates making it an ideal place to study in depth, Shrader said.

    Researchers also want to figure out whether this is just a situation in Mexico or other warmer sections of the globe have similar spikes in young adult deaths in high heat and humidity.

    Initially the team just wanted to look at deaths and what scientists call wet-bulb globe temperatures, but when they looked at age differences, they were surprised and looked in more detail, Shrader said. Wet-bulb temperature, which is intended to mirror how the body cools itself, is derived using a complicated measurement system that factors in humidity and solar radiation. A wet-bulb globe temperature of 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) is thought to be the limit for human survivability. Most places don’t reach that level.

    Researchers determined temperature-related mortality by complex statistical analysis that compares numerous factors in the number of deaths and removes everything they can except temperature fluctuations, said study co-author Andrew Wilson, a Columbia climate economics researcher.

    Researchers also calculated the ideal temperature for when there are the fewest excess deaths at each age group. Younger adults’ sweet temperature spot is about nine degrees Fahrenheit (five degrees Celsius) cooler than it is for older people, Shrader and Wilson said.

    Some outside health and climate experts were initially puzzled at the higher youth mortality seen in the study. Co-author Patrick Kinney, a professor of urban health and sustainability at Boston University, said it was likely the study included a higher proportion of outdoor workers exposed to heat than prior studies did.

    Study co-author Tereza Cavazos, a climate scientist at the Ensenada Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education in Mexico, said she remembers her father’s generations taking siestas in the high heat of the day and that was healthy. That doesn’t happen so much now, she said.

    “There is a lot of population that is vulnerable in the future. Not even in the future, right now,” Cavazos said. She mentioned three Mexican heat waves this year that hit in the middle of the country and kept the deadly heat going overnight so people had little relief. Usually cool nights allow a body to recover.

    Younger people often have a sense of invulnerability to weather extremes and do things that increase their risk, such as play sports in high heat, Cavazos said.

    “High humidity makes it a lot harder for the body to cool itself through sweating – which is how our body primarily stays cool,” said Dr. Renee Salas, an emergency medicine physician and climate change expert at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She was not part of the study team. “So someone young and healthy working outside in heat and high humidity can reach a point where the body can no longer cool itself safely – causing a deadly form of heat injury called heat stroke.”

    Luke Combs recently embraced a significant lifestyle change, one that he credits with positively impacting his life and mental well-being.

    “Surprisingly, this is the least country thing I’ve ever said: [I’m] gluten-free now,” Combs recently revealed to ABC News

    The North Carolina native, who has previously been open about his struggles with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), recalled noticing a “really bad” flare up of his symptoms over the summer. So much so that he says it was “beginning to get in the way of everyday life enjoyment.”

    This caused him to do a “deep dive” into his health. He eventually found a doctor to run some tests on him and learned that he has a “really high sensitivity” to gluten. 

    According to some studies, including this one in the National Library Of Medicine, find associations between mood disorders and gluten intake.

    Combs’ personal experience supports these findings.  

    “Ever since eliminating that, man, it’s changed my life mentally,” he revealed.

    And while he said “There was no intent of, like, man, I should try to lose some weight,” he’s also noticed signs of weight loss since changing his diet. 

    For Combs, being a husband and father is “without a doubt” what motivates him to be healthy. 

    “Longevity is the goal,” he told ABC News. “Every day you get to spend with those guys is really fun and tough, and you need to be your best self to take care of them the way that you feel like they deserve to be taken care of.”

    He later added, “It’s a long process, man. It’s a long road. It’s tough. It’s a challenge, man. I struggle with it every day.”

    Things seems to be working in his favor because Combs was recently included in People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue. 

    The 34-year-old was shocked to hear that he was featured in the “Sexy at Any Age” portion of the issue and admitted, “That’s when I was like, ‘Down year, 1990, must’ve been a down year.’ I thought it was the most-cheeseburgers-eaten list, is what I thought it was…And then to see this guy on there, I was like, ‘Man, times are tough in 1990 for me to be the hottest guy.’”

    Combs is fresh off the CMA Awards stage where he performed his massive hit, “Ain’t No Love In Oklahoma.” Heading into 2025, the superstar will enjoy some downtime before kicking off the new year with a run of headlining shows across New Zealand and Australia. Beginning January 17, Combs will perform at Stadiums across the two countries through February 8. 

    Later in the year, he will headline several festivals, including Tortuga Music Festival, Stagecoach, and Boots in the Park.

    As we near December, Emerald of Katong (EOK) is the best-selling launch of 2024, and perhaps a few years to come. It’s been a while since a project as big as EOK sold out 99 per cent of its units at launch, especially given the higher prices after Covid. But even though many felt EOK was competitively priced, the same can’t be said for some of the smaller 1/2 bedder units that went for surprisingly high prices. That has led some people to wonder: what could you buy for the same price as a one-bedder at EOK in today’s new launch market? You may be surprised at the contrast:

    Notable one-bedders that are comparable in price to EOK

    The typical quantum for a one-bedder at EOK was $1.38 million. The same amount could buy you a one-bedder at some fairly new and notable projects (as of 2024). The following all have an average transaction of $1.38 million or below:

    1. The Collective at One Sophia

    The Collective is a redevelopment of the former Peace Centre/Peace Mansion, which for a long time was alleged to be one of the cheapest ways to live near Orchard. The Collective is a leasehold, 367-unit project that’s selling now, and is expected to reach TOP in 2029 (it sold about 10 per cent at launch at an average of $2,750 psf).

    The Collective is at a nexus: roughly on the boundary between Dhoby Ghaut, Bugis, and Little India. It’s possible to walk to the venerable Plaza Singapura from here (but be warned, the walk is mostly unsheltered, and uphill part of the way). You can also walk to Bugis or into Little India, so amenities are abundant; and you have access to Bencoolen MRT station (DTL) as well as Dhoby Ghaut MRT station (NEL, NSL, CCL). 

    The neighbouring mall, ParkLane, isn’t what we’d call a huge amenity — it’s an ageing mall mostly visited for its McDonald’s, and some may dislike the presence of some KTVs here. Next door to it, however, PoMo is a developing youth hangout; and the nearby Prinsep Street has a lot of nightlife spots. 

    This is a very urban area surrounded by traffic, and there are almost no green spaces. Coupled with the small unit sizes (about 431 sq. ft for one-bedders), it’s better suited to young singles, or being purely a rental asset. 

    Due to its relative proximity to the Beach Road/Bugis area, this could be viewed as an alternative to projects like Midtown Modern or The M. Landlords who are okay with new launches should give it a look. 

    This is a very accessible and convenient area overall, but we’d still call it the tail-end of District 9. The quality of the malls here drops sharply compared to nearby Orchard and Somerset, despite the proximity.

    The Collective is still in developer sales at this point, with one-bedders averaging $2,750 psf. Recent transactions show an average of $1.224 million, with transacted one-bedders mostly being around 431 sq. ft.

    2. Pinetree Hill

    Pinetree Hill is a leasehold, 520-unit condo that will TOP in 2027. While the Ulu Pandan location is not the most accessible (there’s no MRT station within walking distance), this is one of the “greenest” new launch locations to date. It’s also worth noting that, despite being less accessible by public transport, this is still a city fringe (District 21) project; and it’s still convenient for those who drive or cab to the city centre often.

    Pinetree Hill is also literally on a hill, so the site is about 8.5 metres above the nearest roads. This maximises the view for all the units, even those on lower floors; and it also allows for less road noise for ground floor units. 

    Pinetree Hill overlooks Clementi and Dover Forest, so it has great views for nature lovers (although it must be noted that this isn’t forever). The developer was also willing to trade off more units for more generous common areas — about 88 per cent of the land area is given over to common use. 

    This project will appeal to those who work in the Jurong areas, but don’t like the noise and pollution, or the glass-and-concrete jungle of places like Orchard. 

    Still in developer sales, Pinetree Hill started at an average price of $2,360 psf, but this had climbed to $2,541 psf by October. The average quantum is $1,368,273 for most of its one-bedders. These one-bedders are all 538 sq. ft., and are quite limited; there’s a total of just 22 one-bedders in Pinetree Hill. 

    There is another new launch just next door (Nava Grove), but it differs by only having 2 bedders and up.

    3. Norwood Grand

    Norwood Grand is Woodlands’ first new launch in around 12 years. This small (348-unit) leasehold condo is just a short walk from Woodlands South MRT station, on the new TEL line. This is just one stop from Woodlands MRT proper (NSL, TEL), so there’s easy access to Causeway Point Mall. 

    Due to its location, some buyers may look at this project as a rental asset for Malaysian foreign workers. Its one-bedder units are well suited for this, as the quantum is low (see below), and most tenants will appreciate the MRT access.

    A positive trait of Norwood is that, despite the smaller land area and unit count, it has a level of facilities that can match bigger projects. It has a 50-metre lap pool, tennis court, and childcare facilities, along with the usual gym, BBQ pits, etc. Facilities-wise, this is one of the better small project launches we’ve seen over the past years. 

    The surrounding HDB enclave is also reasonably well-developed. We don’t think anyone will feel the “ulu” aspect of Woodlands here: besides the usual slew of coffee shops and minimarts, the HDB-run Vista Point is within walking distance, and this can cover most daily needs. 

    Norwood Grand sold out very fast (84 per cent sold at launch), likely due to 12 years of pent-up demand. The one-bedders were among the most competitively priced of 2024, at $2,133 psf on average. This means an average quantum of just $1,055,968, falling within comfortable reach of a “sell one, buy two” approach.

    4. Union Square Residences

    Can you get a one-bedder in the CBD area for the same price as EOK? The answer is, surprisingly, yes. Union Square Residences (formerly Central Square) in District 1 is a leasehold project with 366 units. 

    This project is within walking distance to both Clarke Quay MRT station (NEL), and Chinatown MRT station (DTL, NEL). That’s both within the CBD and close to the heart of Singapore’s nightlife. The location makes it an obvious rental asset: young single professionals, or single expats, will find this one of the accessible and convenient locations to live. 

    The amenities that are lacking will only matter to bigger family units (e.g., parks and schools), who are unlikely to stay here. This being the heart of the city, there are malls, restaurants, and entertainment in almost every direction; along with crowded roads, noise, and looming buildings (but the Singapore River provides a bit of a break). 

    Given how much of a prime area this is, you might think it’s entirely unaffordable. But surprisingly, the cheaper one-bedders here start from a quantum of $1.38 million. One-bedders here are 463 to 506 sq. ft., so opting for the smaller ones might cost no more than a one-bedder at EOK.

    Mind you, this isn’t to say that Emerald of Katong is bad, but it does show how many alternatives are out there for one-bedders, and how far $1.38 million can actually get you.

    Keith Urban could be heading back to the The Voice in 2025 after Guy Sebastian quit the show last week.

    The 57-year-old country superstar last took his place in the big red chair as coach two years ago.

    And reports have now surfaced that Urban is open to return to the singing competition.

    ‘When asked about returning Keith didn’t say no,’ an insider told Yahoo Lifestyle last month.

    The source added that Urban said he missed being in Australia and coaching on the show.

    He also said that the star and his wife, Nicole Kidman, wanted to spend more time Down Under.

    They continued: ‘There is also a big tour for Keith in Australia next year and if they can all be back here in the country when filming gets underway Keith might make his 4th return to the singing competition.’

    The fan favourite is scheduled to bring his High and Alive Tour Down Under in August.

    ‘The line-up that Channel Seven wants is Keith Urban, Jessica Mauboy, Ronan Keating and LeAnn Rimes,’ a source told Yahoo Lifestyle on Saturday.

    ‘Keith was asked about returning when he recorded a performance for the grand finale and he sounded open to the idea,’ the insider said.

    The source also confirmed that US singer Rimes, 42, is likely to return in 2025.

    ‘In the lead-up to this year’s finale, LeAnn’s management kept talking about the next series and what she plans to do differently,’ the insider added.

    ‘LeAnn was clear about her ambition to return next year and Channel Seven are keen to have her back after her artist won.’

    They also said that fans shouldn’t expect to see Kate back since she appeared ‘a little out of place’ on the show.

    Meanwhile, Ronan Keating, 47, was last seen on for The Voice Australia back in 2016, and has appeared as a judge for the series in the UK and Germany.

However, in a recent Instagram video, Nutritionist and Diabetes Educator Khushboo Jain Tibrewala explains one important risk factor often ignored – stress.

    “If you are doing everything right, but your glucose levels are still not coming down, stress could be the reason. A lot of times people are diagnosed with diabetes in their 20s and 30s. Now you are too young to be getting diabetes, right? But on probing we have learned that although they might have had a genetic risk or they might be eating unhealthy food or might have bad habits, the final tipping point, that trigger that causes type 2 diabetes in their body is generally a period of high stress. It could be like a bad work environment, loss of someone you love, it could be multiple things,” the nutritionist explains in the clip.

    Along with using calming techniques to manage your emotions, your food choices can also help. A healthy gut promotes a healthy mind and vice versa. The nutritionist explains that instead of eating junk food during stress, eating foods that calm your gut can be beneficial to manage your stress and reduce the risk of conditions like diabetes.

    “Eat foods that are calming to your gut. This will calm the entire system and as a result, it will also calm your mind and you will be able to cope with life more effectively,” the nutritionist explains.

    Including prebiotics and probiotics in your diet is a simple and effective way to improve your gut health. Include natural foods that promote a healthy gut microbiome.

    We have all seen momo sellers outside our schools and colleges, right? Many of us have thought about setting up a stall and wondered just how much we could earn doing it. Well, a popular Instagram content creator recently shared a video exploring exactly that, giving us a peek into the earnings of a momo seller. The clip begins with the influencer enthusiastically declaring that he would see how much money he could make in a day by selling momos. He started by watching a momo vendor and learning from him, even jokingly asking, “Bhaiya aap mujhe kaam pe rakh loge?” (Brother, will you hire me?).

    Then, the creator set up his first batch of momos as customers began to arrive one after another. The video progresses with the content creator detailing his experience at the momo shop. He noted the prices: A plate of steam momo was priced at Rs 60, while tandoori momos were sold for Rs 80.

    In less than two hours, approximately 55 plates of momos were sold. As he began to feel tired, he remarked that the crowd of customers surged as it got dark. After selling so many momos, he joked that his mouth felt completely steamed.

    The content creator highlighted the dedication required to run a successful momo business, realising just how many people in India enjoy momos daily. By the end of the day, he was stunned to learn that the vendor had sold out of stock within just four hours.

    In a conversation with the momo seller, the content creator discovered the day’s total income. The seller reported they sold 121 plates of steam momos and 70-80 plates of tandoori momos, bringing the day’s total earnings to Rs 13,500. When asked about expenses, the momo seller revealed they ranged between 6,000 and 7,000 rupees.

    Concluding the discussion, they estimated the seller’s monthly and annual income. The final figures showed a monthly income of around Rs 2,40,000 rupees and an annual income of Rs 30 lakh.

    “Shop rent, labour costs, their stay costs (which need to be paid for by food labour), other than these electricity, water charges, pilferage, and so many other things are there. Don’t believe everything you see. Or else just be one person selling and making it on the road,” the user wrote.
