Season ends for CU Buffs with NCAA 2nd-round loss at Wake Forest – Longmont Times-Call

The Colorado women’s soccer team has been strong on the road all season. Lately, the Buffaloes have also been a tough second-half team.

Both trends continued for CU at Wake Forest in an NCAA Tournament second-round battle on Friday. They just didn’t continue quite well enough for the Buffs to keep their season alive.

CU surrendered goals early in each half before watching a late rally fall short, as Wake Forest ended the Buffs’ season with a 3-1 decision at Spry Stadium. The Buffs were seeking the third Sweet 16 berth in program history but instead see their season end at 12-5-5.

“Buff Nation should be really proud of this team, of the season and their performance tonight,” CU head coach Danny Sanchez said. “We went through that rough stretch (at the end of the regular season), and they could’ve been pointing fingers and making excuses, but they continued to battle because they know the quality of this group.”

Second-seeded Wake Forest dominated the possession early and struck early against a CU squad that was chasing the ball. The Demon Deacons took advantage in the sixth minute, netting a goal by Emily Colton that gave the hosts a 1-0 lead.

CU soon settled in and gradually increased pressure on the Wake Forest defense, but the 1-0 deficit held through halftime. Wake Forest picked up a critical second goal in the 61st minute, as the Demon Deacons’ Emily Morris made a long run that wasn’t picked up by the CU defense, and she converted a left-footed chance to put the Buffs in a 2-0 hole.

Each of CU’s previous two wins — against Utah in the Big 12 tournament and at Georgia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament — featured second-half comebacks by the Buffs, and Colorado once again didn’t go away quietly.

Boulder native Ava Priest converted a free kick in the 74th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1, and the Buffs just missed a potential equalizer when a Priest cross led to a chance for Michaela Rosenbaum that was smothered by Wake Forest goalie Valentia Amaral.

With the Buffs pressing forward seeking the second goal, Wake Forest was able to put together an open counter that Emily Murphy converted with less than 3 minutes remaining, clinching a Sweet 16 berth for the Demon Deacons.

“The early goal, it would’ve been easy for us to hang our heads or pack it in, but I was really pleased with how we responded the rest of the first half,” Sanchez said. “Really, going into halftime down 1-0, we felt pretty good about it. I thought the beginning of the second half we really started to press, create some opportunities. The second goal, it could’ve been a back-breaker, but once again this team has been so resilient this year, especially the last few games when we had our backs against the wall and we needed to get results. I was really pleased with how we responded.”

Shorthanded CU Buffs play to another scoreless draw at Cincinnati – Longmont Times-Call

At first, the Colorado women’s soccer team was finding a way without Shyra James.

But with the Buffaloes’ leading scorer still sidelined, CU suddenly is finding goals difficult to come by.

CU began a pivotal weekend on the road with a scoreless draw at Cincinnati on Thursday night, missing an opportunity to cement a top-four spot in the Big 12 Conference standings with two regular-season games remaining. The top four seeds receive byes at the Big 12 tournament in two weeks.

James, CU’s all-time leading goal scorer who leads the club with six goals this season, missed her fifth consecutive game and has missed eight of the past 10 games. The Buffs won all three games while James endured a stretch of three missed games out of four, and she returned to the lineup to score the only goal in a 1-1 draw against Baylor on Sept. 26.

James hasn’t played since, though. CU defeated Kansas 1-0 in the first game of James’ latest five-game stint on the sideline but has gone 0-1-3 since while scoring just two goals in those four games.

The Buffs have now suffered back-to-back scoreless draws after not getting shut out through the first 14 games. CU (10-2-4, 4-1-4 Big 12) couldn’t end that drought against Cincinnati despite outshooting the Bearcats 18-11 with a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.

CU head coach Danny Sanchez shook up the lineup in hopes of providing a spark, giving Jenny Beyer and Mallory Allen their first starts of the season. Cincinnati also played without its leading goal-scorer, freshman forward Rylee Felton.

“We mixed things up a little bit,” Sanchez said in a news release. “I thought there were some good individual performances, but like I told the team, at the end of the day we’re still not getting enough in the final third. Ava (Priest) tested the keeper well in the second half, but other than that, we had a lot of great possessions through the midfield. We did everything tactically we asked them to do. We were very good in the back, just missing that final piece.”

Buffs goalie Jordan Nytes, who on Wednesday won the Big 12 goalkeeper of the week award for the fourth time this season, made four saves to notch her 10th shutout of the season. Nytes took sole possession of No. 3 among CU’s single-season shutout leaders and moved one behind Kate Scheele’s 2014 total of 11 shutouts. It was the 18th shutout of Nytes’ CU career, moving one behind Kirstin Radlinski for fourth all-time.

Despite the draw, CU actually moved ahead of West Virginia (6-2-1) in the loss column into third in the league standings after the Mountaineers’ 1-0 defeat against No. 19 Texas Tech on Thursday. The Red Raiders and TCU, both 7-0-2 in the league, top the Big 12 standings, and the Buffs will have another opportunity to close in on a top-four spot when they visit West Virginia on Sunday (11 a.m. MT, ESPN+).

Buffs’ red zone defense ranks among nation’s best – Longmont Times-Call

Colorado opponents might be able to gain some yards, but when the Buffaloes are backed up, they get tough.

Five games into this season, the Buffaloes (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) have had one of the stingiest red zone defenses in the country. It’s a trend they hope to continue when No. 18 Kansas State (4-1, 1-1) visits Folsom Field on Saturday (8:15 p.m., ESPN).

The Buffs, who were on a bye this weekend, rank seventh nationally in allowing opponents to score on just 61.9% of their trips to the red zone (inside the 20-yard line). CU opponents have reached the red zone 21 times (only 17 teams have allowed more), but have come away with points just 13 times.

“I think the rallying cry defensively has always got to be: ‘Yards don’t equal points,’” CU defensive coordinator Robert Livingston said. “So, as long as you play great situational defense – that’s third down, that’s the red zone, that’s two minute. It’s 2024, these guys get paid too, so they’re going to make some plays. So just tighten the screws when you have to.”

The Buffs are allowing 379.6 yards per game, which ranks 88th out of 134 FBS teams and they’ve been vulnerable to explosive plays. But especially recently, the red zone defense has been lights out. CU’s last three opponents – Colorado State, Baylor and Central Florida – have reached the red zone 11 times but came away with only 27 points (three touchdowns, two field goals). CU has forced five red zone turnovers in those games.

“It’s a testament to (cornerbacks coach Kevin) Mathis,” Livingston said. “He’s our red zone master. He’s our red zone guru each week, so he does a great job. We put a plan together, and the players go out and execute. I can’t say enough about, again, the group of men we have both on the fourth floor (in the football offices) here as a staff, as well as the players. So it makes my job pretty easy.”

K-State will certainly challenge CU’s red zone defense. The Wildcats have scored on 17 of 18 red zone trips (94.4%), ranking 22nd nationally, with 12 touchdowns.

Rare company

CU has yet to allow a single 100-yard rusher or 100-yard receiver this season. The closest to those marks were Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson (82 rushing yards) and UCF’s RJ Harvey (92 receiving yards).

Through Saturday’s games, only five other FBS teams had yet to allow a rusher or receiver hit the century mark: Army, Louisiana Tech, Northern Illinois, Ohio State and Oklahoma. Like those other teams, CU also has not allowed a quarterback to throw for 300 yards.

A year ago, there were 14 CU opponents who the 100-yard mark as a rusher or receiver, including at least one in 11 of 12 games.

Notable

As of Sunday, K-State was a 5.5-point favorite against the Buffs. Both teams are coming off a bye. … Dating back to 2012, CU has gone 6-6 in games following a bye, including 3-1 in the last four years. Last year, the Buffs lost at UCLA following the bye week. … This will be CU’s first game of the season against an opponent ranked in the Associated Press Top 25. Last year, the Buffs faced six ranked opponents. … CU is 1-15 in its last 16 games against Top 25 opponents, with the lone win coming at TCU in the 2023 opener.
