    Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists: Dwayne Johnson stars as Santa’s bodyguard in the movie “Red One,” internet star MrBeast hosts his own reality competition show on Prime Video called “Beast Games” and Little Big Town host a Christmas special on NBC.

    – What goes on inside the Vatican before white smoke flows out of the Sistine Chapel? “Conclave” (streaming now on Peacock), about the election of a new pope, is a gripping thriller that imagines how the gathering of cardinals could go. The film, directed by Edward Berger and based on Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, stars Ralph Fiennes as the cardinal tasked with running the conclave. Nominated for six Golden Globes, “Conclave” is a major Oscar contender and one of the rare recent adult-oriented dramas to succeed at the box office. In her review, AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr called it “a deliriously fun watch in the way that tense, smart thrillers with an ensemble of great actors can be.”

    – It was easy to miss Clint Eastwood’s “Juror No. 2” in cinemas, but the 94-year-old’s latest arrives Friday, Dec. 20 on Max. And “Juror No. 2,” despite its small theatrical footprint, has been much praised by critics. In it, Nicholas Hoult plays a juror in a murder trial who’s struggling with a moral dilemma.

    – A sled-full of new Christmas movies arrive every year, with hopes of establishing themselves as a new holiday classic. Of them, “Red One” (now streaming on Prime Video) is distinguished by being the biggest, most garishly wrapped one yet. In the $250 million movie, Dwayne Johnson stars as the bodyguard for a more militaristic Kris Kringle (J.K. Simmons), who teams up with a deadbeat hacker (Chris Evans) to rescue Santa after he’s kidnapped. In my review, I wrote that “there is ample time during ‘Red One’ to ponder who, exactly, put a Marvel-ized Santa on their wish list.”

    – Mati Diop’s “Dahomey,” one of the year’s nonfiction highlights, is not to be missed. Diop, the French Senegalese director of “Atlantics,” documents the return of 26 art works seized by French troops during the 1890s from the African kingdom (now southern Benin). In the film, currently streaming on Mubi, Diop casts a wide and fantastic net in chronicling their voyage home, with a wide array of voices debating the ethics and meaning of reparations — including even those of the Dahomey treasures, themselves.

    — ’Twas the week before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. That is, until Monday, when “Little Big Town’s Christmas at the Opry” airs on NBC, available to stream on Peacock the following day! What says “happy holidays” more than some of country music’s modern greats bringing their twang from the famous Nashville stage to the family living room? A group of great guests, probably – and those include Dan + Shay, Kelsea Ballerini, Sheryl Crow, Kirk Franklin, Josh Groban, Kate Hudson and Orville Peck.

    — A new docuseries on Apple TV+ reveals the habits and behaviors of animals in the wild. Hugh Bonneville narrates “The Secret Lives of Animals, ” debuting Dec. Wednesday.

    — Stephanie Hsu stars in a new dark comedy for Peacock as Ruby, a woman whose former lovers keep unexpectedly dying in mysterious, outrageous ways. Ruby and her best friend AJ (Zosia Mamet, doing her wry observational bit) dig into the past to make sense of what’s happening and save lives. The process prompts Ruby to learn hard truths about herself. “Laid” is based on an Australian series. There are also a number of fun guest stars including Finneas O’Connell, Chloe Fineman and Josh Segarra. “Laid” premieres Thursday on Peacock.

    — Internet star MrBeast, (real name: Jimmy Donaldson) whose YouTube channel has more subscribers than any other — is now the host of his own reality competition show on Prime Video called “Beast Games.” Contestants wear tracksuits and compete in wild games for a $5 million prize. It’s like “Squid Game,” without the dying. “Beast Games” premieres Thursday on Prime Video.

    — Season 2 of “Squid Game” drops on Netflix the day after Christmas, but you and your family can get an early start if you’re already itching for a fight to the death. The streamer is inviting subscribers to download Squid Game: Unleashed, an online battle royale for up to 32 players. It includes familiar season 1 competitions like Glass Bridge and Red Light Green Light, as well as deadly new devices like buzzsaws, wrecking balls and lava pits. Last one to survive … well, you don’t get any money but at least you don’t get squished. The contest begins Tuesday, Dec. 17, on iOS and Android.

    It was a meal at a wine estate near Cape Town, South Africa that sparked an unexpected journey to explore one of the region’s most fascinating cuisines. I spent a whole day checking out the wine scene near Cape Town. A day that took me to four wine estates all within a couple of hours from what has quickly become one of my favourite cities in the world. Le Pommier (Apple tree in French) wine estate was once a flourishing apple orchard (hence the name) that dates back to the 1690s. It’s located between the main route between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, both wine hotspots. It was here that I first sampled Bobotie, a South African casserole. It took me straight to the area where this dish probably originated and to discover Cape Malay cuisine in one of Cape Town’s most ‘Instagrammed’ spots.

    In Picture: The Bo-Kaap area

    Ask any local for the most photogenic neighbourhood in Cape Town, and there’s a good chance you’ll get directed to Bo-Kaap (translates to ‘above the Cape’ in Afrikaans). Almost every corner in this grid formerly known as the city’s Malay Quarter is a great spot for pictures. Brightly coloured homes are complemented by cobble-stoned streets in an area that contains the largest concentration of pre-1850 architecture in South Africa. Bo-Kaap Kombuis is a local legend and a restaurant that serves authentic Cape Malay cuisine. So what is this unique cuisine and its origin? A trip to the Bo-Kaap museum in the area is your best bet for a back story that goes back to the days of the Dutch East India company.
    Cape Town developed from the colony set up at Cape of Good Hope by the Dutch. During this period the Dutch also colonised Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and Dutch Malacca (now in Malaysia – that is also the hub for Peranakan cuisine) from 1641 to 1824. The Dutch brought many slaves from this region that also included Indians many of whom were Muslims. Slavery was abolished in the 19th century after the British took over the area. Most freed slaves began congregating around Cape Town which was the only centre of Islamic faith back then in the region. Bo-Kaap is also home to the historic Nurul mosque established in the 1840s. The community began to be known as the Cape Malay community even though many of them were also from India. The community began to develop its own unique cuisine that is now recognised as one of South Africa’s most unique micro cuisines.

    Yusuf and Nazli who set up Bo-Kaap Kombuis (Cook house) are from the area. I didn’t announce my arrival and opted for one of their three Cape Malay tasting platters and a dessert platter. The tasting platter included a lamb curry, bobotie and a chicken curry that was served with rice, Malay-style sambals and rooti (spelt with an extra ‘o’). Each of these dishes featured a unique burst of flavours. The lamb curry had a unique tamarind twist. The team mentioned how most dishes contain turmeric, cumin and coriander in addition to a masala. Some of the dishes also incorporate cloves, cinnamon and cardamom. While the Malay influence is dominant, you will also see Indian influences and South African elements in the cuisine. The curries are usually paired with rooties. Their layered rooti includes butter, flour and water. It was closer to the Malabar parotta in South India than the roti from Northern India.

    Here’re 5 Classic Dishes Of Cape Malay Cuisine:

    1. Koe’sisters:

    A traditional Cape Malay pastry with a cake-like texture dusted with desiccated coconut. These are prepared from balls of dough flavoured with spices like cinnamon and cardamom before they’re cooled, cooked in a boiling syrup before being dusted with coconut.

    2. Sosatie:

    Satay or sate – skewers served with peanut sauce, is one of Malaysia’s best-known dishes. Sosatie is the Cape Town version and takes its name from sate and saus (for spicy sauce). Chunks of mutton are marinated (mostly overnight) with flavouring agents like garlic and curry leaves and then pan-fried or grilled.

    3. Bobotie:

    Sometimes referred to as South Africa’s national dish because of how popular this dish has become. This casserole (sometimes served in restaurants in a cast iron skillet) features curried ground meat at the base with a layer of egg custard on top. The version I tried was served with a yellow rice and sambal as accompaniments.

    4. Biryani:

    The Cape Malay version is unique because it uses lentils along with meat. The spices are similar in Indian versions of biryani but the rice, lentils, meat and gravy are cooked separately and mixed together.

    5. Tomato Bredie:

    It takes its name from the Afrikaans word for stew (bredie). This stew is now eaten across the country but is believed to have been introduced by the Cape Malays. This spiced stew combines tomato, mutton ribs and vegetables that are cooked for a long time with seasonings.

    No ‘Friday Night Lights’: High school football games canceled in some towns near interstate shooting

    As authorities keep searching for a highway shooter in Kentucky, a Friday night tradition of football, pep bands and cheering fans has been sidelined for some towns.

    Games were canceled at a handful of high schools near where the assailant opened fire on Interstate 75 in southeastern Kentucky. Twelve vehicles were hit and five people wounded in the attack last Saturday near London, a city of about 8,000 people roughly 75 miles (120 kilometers) south of Lexington.

    Security was being bolstered at high school football games that played on Friday evening.

    Authorities continue to search a rugged, wooded area where Joseph Couch, the suspected gunman, is presumed to be hiding. The area has cliff beds, sinkholes, caves and dense brush.

    Police have urged area residents to be vigilant and look out for their neighbors as searchers try to track down the suspect. Schools have been at the forefront of those safety measures.

    Schools remained closed in several area districts, as students shifted to virtual learning. The disruption has paused a range of fall sports, including soccer, volleyball and cross country as well as football.

    Among the schools calling off football games were North Laurel, South Laurel and Corbin high schools. The shooting occurred in Laurel County, and Corbin is 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) south of London.

    Fans faced an uncharacteristically quiet Friday evening in towns that rally around their football teams.

    “Friday night games are huge to our community,” said Tackett Wilson, athletic director at Corbin High School. “It’s a huge part of our community and our school.”

    Practices were disrupted as schools took extra precautions while the search for Couch continues.

    “Anytime you have a disruption during your season, it’s an issue,” Wilson said by phone Friday. “But you have to error on the side of caution. It’s student safety.”

    Corbin officials will try to schedule a makeup football game later in the season, he said.

    Amid the disruptions, fans are rooting for the law enforcement officers involved in the search.

    “Right now, we are focused on backing our front-line officers and first responders so they can do their job in catching this guy and we can return to a safe and positive environment for our students,” North Laurel athletic director Ethan Eversole said.

    He praised the safety plan devised by school district administrators. But students have had a big part of their lives put on hold as athletic activities have been idled.

    “Our teams have not been able to practice all week,” Eversole said in an emailed statement.

    Kentucky State Police brought in reinforcements to aid with the search, and authorities have bolstered efforts to keep area residents safe as the search continues.

    “We will not pull resources away from the search for those other activities,” Gov. Andy Beshear said Thursday. “We just want to make sure that people are ready to try to get back to their day-to-day lives, that there’s that extra (law enforcement) presence where people can feel just a little bit better.”

    The day after the shooting, law enforcement officers searched an area near where Couch’s vehicle was found, with a view of I-75. There, they found an Army-style duffel bag, ammunition and spent shell casings, authorities said in an arrest warrant affidavit.

    A short distance away, they found a Colt AR-15 rifle with a sight mounted to the weapon and several additional magazines. The duffel bag had “Couch” hand-written in black marker. Couch fired 20 to 30 rounds in the attack, investigators said.
