    Anju Majeed, Senior Scientist and Director at Sami Labs, sheds some light on this. “Adulteration of sweets and adding artificial colours to make them look more appealing has become a huge concern, especially around Diwali,” she explains. “With demand so high, there’s a real risk that your favourite mithai could be made with low-quality flour, questionable fats, or oils. And that can mean anything from an upset stomach to full-blown food poisoning for those who indulge.”

    Diwali 2024: Here are 5 sweets suggested by Anju Majeed that you should be most careful of during the festival season:

    1. Khoye ki Barfi

    Most festive mithais are made with khoya, but here’s a heads-up: it’s one of the most commonly adulterated ingredients in sweets. Word on the street is that some shady sellers might bulk up khoya by adding wheat or rice flour (starch) to increase its quantity. So, even if you’re planning to whip up a mithai with khoya, make sure you’re checking its purity. It could save your dessert from being more starch than sweet.

    According to Dr Saurabh Arora, Director of Auriga Research and Arbro Pharmaceuticals, “Most people buy sweets and snacks that look delicious, which is why many vendors add bright colours – sometimes even non-approved ones – to make them more appealing. These artificial colours are often cheaper, last longer, and give sweets like ladoos a vivid appearance.” He advises consumers to be cautious when buying festive treats and to trust only reliable sellers, especially with sweets like motichoor ladoo, where quality can make all the difference.

    3. Kaju Katli

    Kaju katli features a silver varq that enhances the appeal of this popular traditional mithai. According to Indian regulations, any silver used as a food ingredient must be 99.9 percent pure. However, due to the high cost of silver, some vendors may use aluminium foils that merely resemble silver varq. To avoid the potentially harmful effects of these counterfeit substances, it’s a good idea to make kaju katli at home.

Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels’ iconic bakery and confectionary brand from Kolkata, Flurys, launched its first tearoom in Mumbai. Located near the Gateway of India, this 100-seater establishment manages to be a cafe, bakery, restaurant, bar and more!     We started our feast with the House Cobb Salad, which had fresh, hearty portions of every ingredient. Among the appetisers, we tasted the Semolina-Crusted Chicken, which was crisp and satisfying. Flurys unsurprisingly has an expansive range of bread-based treats. Instead of a sandwich or a flatbread (both of which have several options), we decided to order one of the “Things on Toast”. While Flury’s Beans on Toast has been an iconic staple since the 70’s, the menu here also features other toppings. We chose the creamy garlic mushroom, which turned out to be unexpectedly indulgent (see picture). The massive slice of toasted bread was completely engulfed with the deliciously messy topping. It gave the dish a home-style vibe that we liked.

    The mains impressed us even more. We opted for the simplest pasta: the whole wheat spaghetti with Traditional Napoli Sauce (vegetarian). It exuded comfort like a warm hug. The flavour of the basil, the tanginess of the tomato base and the bite of the pasta were beautifully balanced. The other main dish was also one we would return for: the Grilled Rosemary Marinated Chicken. Served on a thick bed of buttery mashed potatoes, surrounded by a flavourful jus, the succulent pieces were a pure delight.

    Flurys has a wide range of beverages beyond their heritage hot tea selection. They have also introduced a few cocktails with interesting combinations. We enjoyed the Pin: 00001, an exhilarating gin-based concoction with passion fruit, basil, honey and lemon. Among the mocktails, we recommend the yummy sweet-and-sour notes of Farmers Farm (dragon fruit, orange pulp, lychee and orange juice) and the refreshing Caribbean Sea (Coconut Water, Pineapple Chunks, Ginger and Basil). Among the hot beverages, we loved the Hazelnut Mocha, which seemed to be the perfect drink to beat the monsoon blues.

    For dessert, we savoured two Flurys classics: the Rum Ball and the Strawberry Cube Pastry. While the latter was a bit too sweet for our taste, the former was just scrumptious! There are many other sweet treats to choose from too.

Shah Rukh Khan flew to Yas Island, Abu Dhabi in the early hours of Thursday and received a special welcome from his hotel, the Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island. What was special about this welcome? All things gourmet and exclusive! IIFA shared pictures of SRK’s room on their official Instagram handle.
    The room was full of delicious desserts and savoury treats, customised for SRK. The caption on the post read, “Sneak peek into Shah Rukh Khan’s room.” The carousel features a huge photo cake with pictures of SRK’s films — Raees, Pathaan, Ra-One, Zero, Dunki and Don 2.
