    College football Week 7 overreactions: Ryan Day is the ultimate underachiever, Texas is leagues ahead in SEC

    What’s to be done about Ryan Day? On one hand, most fans around the nation would kill for Ohio State’s double-digit win stability throughout his six-year career running the show in Columbus. On the other, Ohio State fans have every right to be upset with the results thus far. 

    Day seems allergic to winning games that actually matter. Following Saturday’s 32-31 loss to Oregon, the Buckeyes are now 2-6 against top five teams in the AP Poll under Day. They’ve lost four straight games against such opponents. 

    For at least three years, Michigan has been a constant thorn in Ohio State’s side. Now it’s a conference newcomer that had never won against a top-3 team; the Ducks were 0-19 all-time before their triumph against the Buckeyes.

    While it’s not fair to call Day’s seat hot — Ohio State can still make the Big Ten Championship Game, and it’s hard to envision a 12-team College Football Playoff without the Buckeyes — he is college football’s biggest underachiever. Day and Ohio State went all-in with an impressive transfer haul, supplementing a roster that saw a majority of its biggest stars return for one more Dream Team-esque run. They lured sitting UCLA head coach Chip Kelly to become their offensive coordinator

    And they wilted in their first real test of the 2024 season; no Wolverines required. That national championship mystique that permeated the Columbus air in the offseason has completely evaporated, replaced by a dark cloud of questions surrounding Day’s place as a high-level coach. 

    Here are four other overreactions as we put a bow on Week 7. 

    It’s Texas and then everyone else in the SEC

    The Longhorns are creating more and more distance in the conference race with each passing week, both with their play on the field and given other results happening around the SEC’s now vast southern footprint. On the same day that Texas demolished No. 18 Oklahoma 34-3, avenging last season’s loss, No. 7 Alabama struggled at home against unranked South Carolina, No. 8 Tennessee needed overtime to beat one of the worst Florida teams in quite some time and even No. 5 Georgia looked uninspired in a 41-31 win against hapless Mississippi State

    All those aforementioned teams already have at least one loss, too. Alabama and Tennessee both fell against unranked teams that they were favored by double digits against. Georgia lost to Alabama. At the time, that seemed like a powerhouse clash between two national title contenders. But the result becomes more dubious with each passing week. 

    For those still doubting their résumé, the Longhorns are currently 6-0 and are winning by an average of just under 37 points per game against a strength of record that currently ranks eighth in the nation, per ESPN’s FPI metric. They’ll have a chance to permanently silence any remaining detractors against Georgia next week. 

    For now, Texas looks head and shoulders above every other team in the SEC, and certainly most teams around the nation. 

    It might be time for UCF to retire the Gus Bus 

    It’s starting to putter out. Gus Malzahn’s UCF tenure may have hit a new low Saturday afternoon in a 19-13 home loss against Cincinnati. The same Cinciannti team that went 3-9 last year and won just one game in Big 12 play. 

    The Golden Knights even benched starting quarterback KJ Jefferson, a former Arkansas transfer, before the game kicked off to try and spark a stagnant offense. It didn’t work. His replacement, 17-year-old true freshman EJ Colson, was benched after four pass attempts. Jacurri Brown, who entered the game for Colson, did post an impressive 207 yards and one touchdown, but it obviously wasn’t enough in the end. 

    This was UCF’s third loss in a row as outright favorites. Malzahn’s squad hasn’t scored more than 21 points since a Sept. 14 win against TCU, and it’s combined to put 26 on the board in each of its last two losses. 

    Remember, prior to breaking into the collegiate head coaching ranks, Malzahn made his name as an offensive coordinator and, particularly, a quarterback guru. UCF currently ranks 12th in the Big 12 with 206.8 yards passing per game. 

    Malzahn is now 9-10 since UCF’s move to the Big 12, with a 4-8 showing against conference foes. The Golden Knights weren’t expected to compete immediately, but it isn’t promising that they’re showing signs of regression under a 58-year old head coach. 

    UCF should be set up well in the Big 12. Its unique position as the conference’s only representative in Florida gives it an inherent advantage in talent acquisition. Saturday’s result —  and the last month, really — raise serious doubts about Malzahn’s ability to fully capitalize on that. 

    Kenny Dillingham is coach of the year 

    What Kenny Dillingham is doing in Tempe should not be ignored. The 34-year old inherited an absolute mess from the Herm Edwards era. Edwards was fired three games into the 2022 season after a 30-21 loss to Eastern Michigan

    This decision came amid an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations committed by Edwards and his staff during the COVID-19 dead period. The Sun Devils had a mass transfer portal exodus following the 2021 season — not long after reports of the violations surfaced — that saw them lose the likes of quarterback Jayden Daniels (an eventual Heisman Trophy winner at LSU) and wide receiver Johnny Wilson (who developed into an NFL Draft pick at Florida State). 

    So Dillingham inherited a gutted roster and a program facing an uncertain future with punitive measures on the horizon when he took the job ahead of the 2023 season. Arizona State certainly took its lumps in his first year. The Sun devils only won three games. They weren’t expected to acclimate well to a move to the Big 12 in 2024. July’s media poll tabbed them to finish dead last in the now 16-team conference. 

    Fast-forward a couple months, and Arizona State is 5-1, with a 2-1 record in Big 12 play. Its latest win came against No. 16 Utah, the preseason Big 12 favorites. That was ASU’s first win against a ranked team under Dillingham, and it put the Sun Devils in position to at least flirt with the AP Top 25 Poll themselves. 

    Arizona State is just one win away from making a bowl game, at the very least. With how chaotic the Big 12 has been, it would be hard to completely discount the Sun Devils’ path to the Big 12 Championship Game — especially if they can beat teams of Utah’s ilk. It’s been nothing short of a miraculous turnaround under Dillingham, one that’s more than worthy of awards consideration.  

    Cade Klubnik engineering college football’s best individual turnaround 

    Clemson has eviscerated every opponent it’s stepped on the field against since its season-opening loss to Georgia, and the play of quarterback Cade Klubnik has been a big reason why. He is quietly engineering one of college football’s biggest individual turnarounds, after a rough first year as the Tigers’ starter, and he deserves more recognition when it comes to the discussion around postseason honors. 

    He threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s win against Wake Forest, completing 75.6% of his passes in the process. That was Klubnik’s fourth game with at least three touchdowns passing and third game with at least 250 yards through the air. His 17 touchdowns passing currently rank third among ACC quarterbacks, and he’s tied for the conference lead at his position with four touchdowns rushing. 

    Most importantly, Klubnik has only thrown two interceptions through six games. Turnovers were a huge issue for him in 2023 — nine of his passes were snagged by the defense — but he has taken great strides in the decision-making department. Clemson hasn’t played a difficult schedule over the past month or so, but the Tigers’ offense looks worlds better than it did a year ago with Klubnik running the show, even when adjusting for competition. 

    That could be just what the Tigers need to climb back to the ACC’s mountaintop.

    “Players are responsible for calling their own fouls and settling disputes.

    “This system promotes sportsmanship, honesty, and respect, making the game welcoming and friendly for newcomers,” Bradley said.

    Bradley said there were close to 3000 players in New Zealand playing in regional leagues linked to NZ Ultimate. Rotorua Ultimate had over 100 players on its contact list, with a core of 30 players regularly playing in social leagues.

    “Rotorua’s competitive mixed team placed fifth out of 18 teams at the New Zealand Mixed Ultimate Championship (NZMUC) Division 2 in 2023.

    “About 560 players competed in our national club tournaments in 2023 and at the latest World Ultimate Championships in the Gold Coast, Australia, New Zealand was the 10th best country overall,” said Bradley.

    The basic skills of the game involve throwing, catching, running and jumping, which makes an easy transition for athletes from other individual and team sports.

    The sport has created pathways to national and international competitions, with players such as Kieran Allen, who has been playing ultimate for 19 years and competitively for eight years.

    As captain of the Rotorua club, Allen said the best parts of Ultimate were the diversity and inclusivity of the sport, even at higher levels.

    “I have played national-level tournaments on the same team as my wife and, when he’s a bit older, I’ll be able to do the same with my son.

    “I’ve played tournaments with kids as young as 10 and players in their 50s,” Allen said.

    Joining the New Zealand team competing in the World Flying Disc Federation 2024 World Masters Ultimate Championships in the US in November, Allen said it meant a lot to be selected.

    “I’ve played for a long time, I have had players who I taught to play move to larger regions and go on to represent NZ, so to be able to finally do it myself is an honour.

    “I’m most looking forward to putting on the NZ uniform and standing on the biggest stage at masters worlds against the best players from other countries.”

    When describing Ultimate to someone looking at getting into the sport, Allen tells them it is a non-contact, fast-paced sport and a cross between the movements of netball and the plays of American football.

    “If you’re looking for a social sport to be able to play with your kid, partner or just by yourself, maybe you want something to be able to put more effort into and be able to compete at a high level, then Ultimate is a great sport to try out,” said Allen.

    Rotorua Ultimate Club will be running give-it-a-go sessions on October 14 and 17 at Medical Officers Reserve from 6pm.

    Newcomers have the opportunity to try out some basic throws, learn the outlines of the rules and participate in a social game.

    There is also the chance to meet current members of the club, who will give guidance on the field, meaning there will be support throughout.

    Rotorua Ultimate wants the community to come out, bring their enthusiasm and experience the joy of Ultimate.

    My mornings began at La Perle, a vibrant Mediterranean brasserie overlooking the turquoise expanse. Sunlight streamed through the open-air space as I savoured fresh-squeezed juices and perfectly cooked omelettes, the gentle clatter of cutlery providing the only soundtrack. This is the kind of breakfast that sets the tone for a day of blissful relaxation.

    Noontime was a delightful dance between poolside indulgence and culinary exploration. Torti, with its light and airy pavilion, was my go-to for casual fare – think fresh sushi rolls and poke bowls brimming with vibrant colours that disappeared faster than you can say “hangry.” But for a taste of adventure, Moulin beckoned. It’s the resort’s signature restaurant, where the magic of “garden-to-table” truly comes alive. Here, Chef de Cuisine creates a daily five-course tasting menu that showcases the island’s bounty-like living art. Each dish was a revelation, a marriage of seasonal ingredients.

    As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the sky in a fiery palette of oranges and pinks, the resort came alive with a different kind of energy. I decided to start my evening with a pre-dinner cocktail at Lalin. This dream-like champagne bar, suspended between Heaven and Earth, is a sensory experience unlike any other. The atmosphere was electric, with live music setting the mood and a contagious energy that kept the room buzzing. It was a feast for both the palate and the soul, a night I’ll never forget.

    In a thick-bottomed kadhai, separately dry roast chana dal, urad dal, yellow moong and uncooked rice grains. The heat should be on low to medium flame. Once their colour changes, transfer each of them to a tray to cool. In the same kadhai, add atta, haldi, hing, chilli powder, methi seeds, cumin seeds, and other seeds. Also, add the whole spices along with salt. Do not turn on the stove. Saute the ingredients together for some time and then mix them with the pulses roasted earlier. Grind all the ingredients to form a fine powder.

From affordable and popular staples to wholesome artisanal versions, the city has places catering to various pizza preferences. So how does one stand out and entice foodies to return? The answer does not have to be overly complicated. Pass The Salt, a new pizza destination in Fort, shows that it’s all about thoughtfulness and technique. Our recent dinner at the cafe allowed us to taste some of its signature dishes and we experienced a delightful convergence of flavour and texture.

    Co-founders Kruti Sanghvi and Vishal Shah first established Pass The Salt as a pizza delivery kitchen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kruti became a self-taught chef after quitting her job as a biomedical engineer. Operating out of Vile Parle, the cloud kitchen specialised in indulgent Chicago-style deep-dish pizzas and Vienna-style thin-crust pizzas. The former was something Kruti was especially excited to deliver to Mumbaikars. After forming a loyal customer base all over the city, the couple decided to take their venture to the next level and set up a dine-in establishment offering its bestsellers and other innovative dishes.

    Eventually, Pass The Salt opened the doors of its cafe in June 2024 in a heritage building in South Mumbai’s Fort area – situated in a bylane opposite St. Thomas Cathedral. You may miss it while strolling down the more popular streets of this historic neighbourhood. But that’s the thrill of finding a hidden gem which is seemingly tucked away in plain sight. Inside the establishment, the decor exudes simplicity and comfort through its checkerboard flooring and seating with B&W stripes. The well-lit space has a casual and warm vibe, creating an atmosphere for relaxation through food. Those wanting to grab a quick bite and drink can also sit at the coffee bar opposite the entryway.

    The fully vegetarian menu features sharing plates, calzones, tartines, burrata plates, grilled cheese sandwiches and non-alcoholic drinks, apart from the two signature types of pizzas. We began our meal with a generous portion of the Avocado & Grapefruit Salad, whose wholesomeness contrasted with the indulgence of the Spaghetti Cheese Croquettes. While the cafe doesn’t serve pasta, its alternative use as a filling is fun and gratifying (there’s also a pizza stuffed with Mac & Cheese on the menu). Many of the appetisers feature bread bases, but the croquettes are among the few exceptions.

    As we took our time deciding our pizza orders, we sipped on the Chamomile Blue Pea Iced Tea – which turned out to be a rather polarising drink at our table. It’s a unique combination that may win you over or may seem too bizarre to taste. A less risky choice is the refreshing Black Currant Iced Tea with a green tea base. Our favourite beverage discovery of the evening was the Oko-Caribe Iced Latte, made with the eponymous cacao from the Dominican Republic. The cold mocha beautifully balanced the potency of the chocolate and coffee. It also had a subtle hint of bitterness that we loved.

    Among the options for the Chicago-style Double Crust Deep Dish Pizza, we selected the San Gennaro (filled with onions, roasted red peppers, banana peppers, marinated black olives and jalapenos). All the deep-dish pizzas here are made with a rich San Marzano sauce and whole milk mozzarella. Our server lifted a slice from the pan to the plate and the sight of the stringy ‘cheese pull’ looked like something out of a foodie dream. As we bit into the crust and through the layers, we closed our eyes in pure enjoyment. The crust was solid enough to carry the weight without contributing much heaviness to the pizza. Despite the apparent decadence of the dish, the freshness and balance of the ingredients ensured we didn’t feel unpleasantly full after eating so much.

    The pizza that followed was also a testament to the mastery of technique at Pass The Salt. Among the signature Thin Crust Pizzas, we chose the Hawaiian Barbeque. It’s the only one in this category that doesn’t feature a San Marzano sauce. Detractors of “pineapple on pizza” may disagree, but when executed well, this fruit can lend a wonderful complexity to this beloved treat. And the version here is proof. The sweetness of the juicy marinated pineapple (complemented with grilled onion rings and smooth barbeque sauce) clashed deliciously with the heat of green chillies and red paprika. The other aspect that wowed us was the buttery and flaky base, which was reminiscent of a crispy croissant. It was a notch above a regular thin crust, as it added another dimension to the pizza without stealing the spotlight from the toppings.

    For dessert, we tried the Burnt Basque Cheesecake, which was good but needed a creamier texture. We did not get to try the savoury dessert named after the brand as it was over by the end of our dinner. But we relished a heavenly bowl of Salted Caramel Gelato in its place.

    Pass The Salt is well worth the hike to Kala Ghoda and is fortunately located just a few hundred metres behind the Flora Fountain. Those already frequenting the area should take advantage of having such a spot in their proximity. The pizzas are known to travel quite well, and this is a point of pride for the brand, we are told.
