The special evening marked a seismic moment in Indian sport as over 140 Indian athletes spanning various generations, including Olympians and Paralympians, were in attendance at an event for the first time ever.

Nita Ambani, who was presented with a special Paralympic torch that is a signifier of equality as a token of gratitude by the Paralympic Committee of India, spoke about the transformational power of sports and said every Indian athlete in attendance as an inspiration.

She said, “This is truly historic. Over the last two months, our Olympians & Paralympians proudly took the tricolour to the world! Tonight, for the first time, they are all under one roof. United in Triumph, United in Celebration and United in the inclusive spirit of sport.

”Among those in attendance were Paris Olympics and Paralympics medalists including India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra, shooting superstar Manu Bhaker, Harvinder Singh, world record holder Sumit Antil, Navdeep Singh, Preethi Pal, Aman Sehrawat, Sarabjot Singh, Swapnil Kusale, Indian hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh, PR Sreejesh, Nitesh Kumar and Simran Sharma.

The event was made even more memorable by the presence of Indian sporting legends who have inspired multiple generations like Murlikant Petkar, the first Indian in history to win Gold at the Paralympics, Devendra Jhajharia, President of the Paralympic Committee of India, Deepa Malik, Pullela Gopichand and Karnam Malleswari.

Bollywood heartthrobs Ranveer Singh and Kartik Aaryan, who have helmed sporting classics like 83 and Chandu Champion respectively, were also present to extend their support to the initiative and mingled with the athletes. The event will be repeat telecasted from 9:45 pm on Wednesday as well.

Manchester United give the executive elite another fiasco to chew on | Soccer

HERE WE GO AGAIN

At one point during Manchester United’s humiliation at the hands of Tottenham on Sunday, the Sky Sports cameras cut to the posh seats in one of Old Trafford’s stands. There they were, all seated together: the lads. More specifically, the Ineos Brains Trust, all employed by minority shareholder and entitled billionaire Sir Big Jim Ratcliffe. Apparently they are the executive elite, the best of the best and tip of the spear when it comes to football club leadership, administration, finance, player recruitment, analytics and in one specific instance, seeming shifty and unconvincing when appearing before government select committees tasked with combating doping in British sport.

Hunched in their seats, these expensively assembled high-performance hucksters and marginal gains gurus from the football equivalent of Top Gun appeared to be outdoing each other in their efforts to look more gravely concerned than the others by what they were seeing unfold on the pitch. Assorted suits with matching red ties sitting alongside each other but alone with their thoughts; with each almost certainly arriving at the conclusion that “this fiasco certainly isn’t any of my doing”. While it seems pretty obvious that it’s only a matter of time before these members of the Brailsford Hive Mind subject each other and their boss to endless PowerPoint presentations before arriving at the stunningly novel collective conclusion that it’s time to appoint a man whose sole foray into the world of club management ultimately resulted in the relegation of Middlesbrough from the Premier League, nobody seems to have mentioned it to the current head coach.

Having masterminded a team effort so abject that the only player on the pitch to hint they might have the United manager’s back was the predictably profligate Tottenham winger Timo Werner, Erik ten Hag insisted that he and those in whose hands his future lies are – to borrow a phrase from the Tory party – all in this together. It was a sentiment that couldn’t have rung more hollow if it had emanated from the pie-hole of Boris Johnson and the beleaguered Dutchman’s insistence that “we need some time” sounded equally unconvincing given that the 3-0 defeat was right up there with the very worst performances he’s overseen in two-and-a-half years at the club. Even his regular go-to excuse of “injuries” sounded nonsensical, given that Luke Shaw is the only first-team staple currently sidelined, while Spurs were missing Son Heung-min, who would have put away at least one of the chances Werner missed on the frequent occasions he was put through on goal.

Of course no United embarrassment is complete without an addendum from Gary Neville, who stepped up to the plate by describing his former team’s first-half performance as “disgusting”, before adding that professionalism of United’s players being questioned last week by a senior dressing-room figure such as Christian Eriksen should carry more weight than anything a humble pundit such as he might have to say. In other post-match fallout, Tottenham felt compelled to put out a club statement condemning “the abhorrent homophobic chanting from sections of our away support at Old Trafford”, stating that “it is simply unacceptable, hugely offensive and no way to show support for the team”. While largely supported, a quote-tweet from Proud Lilywhites, the official LGBTQ+ wing of Spurs fans did garner a significant number of replies from assorted members of the “woke nonsense” and “it’s only b@nter” brigades, who apparently remain too dimwitted to realise that using the insinuation somebody they don’t like is not straight as a pejorative might in some way be hugely insulting to vast numbers of their own tribe.

Raphael Varane announces his shock retirement from football, aged just 31 – after the former Man United and Real Madrid star suffered a serious knee injury on his Como debut last month

Former Manchester United, Real Madrid and France star Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from football.

Varane, 31, has struggled to stay fit in recent years and suffered a serious knee injury just 20 minutes into his debut for Como last month.

Varane was subsequently left out of Como’s Serie A squad given he’s expected to be sidelined for an extended period of time.

As a result, Le Parisien had previously reported that the 31-year-old was considering a shock retirement.

And now, Varane has called time on his glittering career, revealing the decision via a post on his Instagram account on Wednesday morning.

Alongside a series of photos from his career, Varane wrote in a statement: ‘They say all good things must come to an end.

‘In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.

‘I hold myself to the highest standard, I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct. Desire and needs are two different things. I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley.

‘I have loved fighting for myself, my clubs, my country, my teammates and the supporters of every team I have played for. From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and playing for our national team. I have defended every badge with everything I have, and loved every minute of the journey. The game at the highest level is a thrilling experience. It tests every level of your body and your mind. The emotions we experience you cannot find anywhere else. As athletes, we are never satisfied, never accepting of success. It is our nature and what fuels us.

‘I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that no matter what, I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it. Several of Varane’s former team-mates and clubs were quick to pay tribute to the Frenchman, while the France national team also passed on their well-wishes.

Posting on X, they said: ‘Damn dust in the eye. Thanks for the work Raph. We all wish you a good retirement. #ProudtobeBlue.’

The World Cup winner had joined Como as a free agent over the summer after his contract with Manchester United expired at the end of last season.

He made the move to Italy on a two-year deal – where he linked up with Cesc Fabregas’ side – and joined fellow former Premier League stars Pepe Reina and Alberto Moreno in Como’s squad.

But now, Varane has terminated his contract with the Serie A outfit as he prepares for the next chapter of his life.

Varane, who came through the youth ranks at Lens, played at the top level for 14 years.

After one season in the first team with the Ligue 1 side, the central defender joined Real Madrid in 2011 aged 18.

He went on to make 360 appearances for the Spanish giants, winning three La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and a Copa del Rey, among several other trophies over a decade.

Varane won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup with United during his three-year spell at the club

Varane revealed he was planning to stay with Como in a new role that is yet to be announced

The Frenchman moved to United in 2021 and displayed his quality despite being hampered by injuries during his three years at Old Trafford, racking up 95 appearances for the Red Devils.

His last game in a United shirt saw him lift the FA Cup as he started the 2-1 victory over Man City at Wembley in May, while he also won the Carabao Cup with the club.

Varane also shone for France in their 2018 World Cup triumph, with the defender racking up 93 caps in total for Les Bleus before he retired from international duty at the age of 29 in February 2023.

Made public Eddie Howe meeting with Newcastle United Sporting Director – Widen the scope

Newcastle United Sporting Director Paul Mitchell and Eddie Howe have met up for talks this week on moving forward and working together on behalf of the football club.

With i-news saying that their information is that there was ‘constructive dialogue’ and there is now confidence behind the scenes that any teething problems have been put to bed.

Crystal Palace not allowing Marc Guehi to move at the end of the transfer window, due to a new signing getting injured and Andersen leaving for Fulham, plus an informal interview/chat that the Newcastle United Sporting Director had with a number of journalists after that window closed, had led to a lot of speculation that there were differences in opinion between Head Coach and Sporting Director.

The journalists who attended the lengthy informal meeting/interview with Paul Mitchell, gave varying accounts of what was said by the recently appointed Newcastle United Sporting Director.

With it not exactly helping when some of the more hysterical/desperate reporting wanting to claim ‘civil war’ at Newcastle United, some journalists seemingly intent on forcing either Paul Mitchell or Eddie Howe out of the club.

Those claiming ‘civil war’, appeared to be determined to base the post-interview reporting around a ‘not fit for purpose’ comment that Paul Mitchell had made about the recruitment policy.

That then leading to Eddie Howe quizzed at press conferences about the quality of past signings he and the club had made. The NUFC Head Coach quite rightly defending the level of signings made from January 2022 onwards.

Other commentators raised the possibility/probability that the ‘not fit for purpose’ comment had been the Newcastle United Sporting Director meaning more the overall recruitment situation, that had ended up with the desperate panic selling of both Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson before the end of June 2024 PSR deadline, before Paul Mitchell took up his new post.

Whether or not Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell had held conversations since the early September interview, didn’t appear that relevant to many people with regard to transfers/signings. Considering that a transfer window had just closed and it would be another four months until the next one.

Eddie Howe clearly finding this repeated line of questioning at his pre-match press conferences tiresome and even if he had spoken to the Newcastle United Sporting Director, it appeared unlikely he would have told the journalists anyway. Similar to the way that Eddie Howe no doubt frustrates many of the same journalists when so often misleading them about which players are/aren’t available, as he prefers to keep the opposition guessing. Same with imminent signings in the past, Harvey Barnes a prime example, when none of the media had a clue he had signed, until after the winger publicly met up with his new teammates in America.

The i-news exclusive about the Newcastle United Sporting Director and Head Coach having met in recent days, states

‘A weekend report claiming Mitchell would leave Newcastle before Howe if a so-called “power struggle” continued has been dismissed and majority owners the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) want the pair to work together as part of the new management structure…Mitchell’s planned tweak of the recruitment remit and outlook is also understood to have his (Eddie Howe’s) backing.

The report says that Paul Mitchell wants to widen the scope of their scouting network and also introduce more data into their processes, both things that the club’s powers are said to be supportive of. With the immediate aim to have a very positive January 2025 transfer window.

This media exclusive concludes with i-news stating ‘There is no sense of panic at St James’ Park, where the stated aim this campaign is to qualify for Europe next season. Instead there is confidence in Howe and his coaching team’s ability to hit the heights when it matters.’

A lot of positivity in that update and whilst I never had any doubts about the ability of Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell to work together, it is heartening to hear that they are said to be on the same page moving forward.

A small matter of performances and results of course before we get to that January window, then hopefully seeing one or more targets landed, to help ensure this season is a positive one for everybody connected with Newcastle United.

UN experts urge United Nations to lay foundations for global governance of artificial intelligence

UNITED NATIONS — A high-powered U.N. advisory body said Thursday that global governance of artificial intelligence is “imperative” and urged the United Nations to lay the foundations for the first inclusive global institutions to regulate the fast-growing technology.

In a 100-page report, the group said AI “is transforming our world,” offering tremendous potential for good from opening new areas of science and accelerating economic growth to improving public health, agriculture and optimizing energy grids.

But left ungoverned, it said, AI’s benefits could be limited to a handful of countries, companies and individuals, while even more powerful systems than exist today “could upend the world of work,” create autonomous weapons, and pose risks to peace and security.

The advisory body outlined principles that should guide formation of new institutions to govern AI including international law, and especially human rights law. It calls on all governments and parties involved in AI to work together to protect human rights.

The group made wide-ranging recommendations including establishing an international scientific panel on AI to create a global understanding of its capabilities and risks, and a global dialogue on AI governance at the U.N. to anchor future institutions on human rights principles and international law.

The recommendations also call for a global AI fund to ensure that the technology bridges the divide between rich and poor nations and promotes achievement of U.N. development goals for 2030, and a “Standards Exchange” to foster technical compatibility.

At present, the report said, only seven of the 193 U.N. member nations are party to seven recent prominent AI governance initiatives while 118 countries, primarily in the global South, “are missing entirely” from any conversation.

Among the initiatives are the European Union’s first-ever legal framework to regulate AI, which entered into force on Aug. 1. This month,. the Group of 20 leading world economies agreed to establish guidelines for developing artificial intelligence, calling for “ethical, transparent, and accountable use of AI,” with human oversight and compliance with privacy and human rights laws. And lawmakers in California — home to many of the world’s biggest AI companies — recently adopted legislation to regulate AI which is before the governor.

The advisory board’s report concluded on a positive but cautious note.

“As experts, we remain optimistic about the future of AI and its potential for good,” the report said. “That optimism depends, however, on realism about the risks and the inadequacy of structures and incentives currently in place.”

The board stressed that “The technology is too important, and the stakes are too high, to rely only on market forces and a fragmented patchwork of national and multilateral action.”

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed the advisory body last October, saying coordinated action is needed to keep the threat of artificial intelligence from becoming an uncontrolled “monster.”

The group comprises 39 prominent AI leaders from 33 countries — chosen from over 2,000 nominations. They represent all regions of the world, are serving in their personal capacity, and include experts from government, the private sector and civil society.

Guterres commended the group’s work Thursday, expressing full support for its recommendations “which provide a blueprint to build on existing efforts and together, shape an international AI architecture that is inclusive, agile and effective – for today and the future.”

When the secretary-general told reporters last year that he planned to appoint the advisory body, Guterres said he would react favorably to a new U.N. agency on artificial intelligence and suggested as a model the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is knowledge-based and has some regulatory powers.

But the advisory body said it wasn’t recommending establishment of an agency.

Amandeep Singh Gill, the secretary-general’s chief’s envoy on technology and a member of the advisory body, told a news conference launching the report that for now an agency isn’t needed, “but it’s not saying that we would never need something like that.” The board wants that possibility to be studied, he said.

The report was issued ahead of the Summit of the Future starting Sunday which Guterres has called to try to unite the world’s divided nations and address the challenges and threats confronting humanity from conflicts and climate change to artificial intelligence and reforming the U.N.
