Manchester United’s struggles worsen with back-to-back losses as sporting director exits after five months – Firstpost

Everything that can go wrong is going wrong at Manchester United. They have lost the last two matches in Premier League under new manager Ruben Amorim and their sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has been sacked after just five months in the job.

The troubles don’t seem to get over at Manchester United. They recently
sacked Erik Ten hag in October after the club was reeling at 14th place in the Premier League and the Red Devils are in 13th now after two
back-to-back defeats under new manager Ruben Amorim, who joined the club with a big reputation, only in November.

To make matters worse, they have now sacked sporting director Dan Ashworth after just five months. Ashworth was the force behind giving Ten Hag a year’s contract extension, which was initially greeted positively by fans after United upset Manchester City to win the FA Cup final at the end of last season.

Man Utd admit mistake by sacking Ashworth

Ashworth also oversaw United’s major summer player signings including Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Manuel Ugarte, Leny Yoro, and Joshua Zirkzee.

None of them have consistently impressed, although French defender Yoro only made his debut last week following a lengthy injury.

The Premier League club said Ashworth’s contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

“We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well in the future,” United said in a statement.

It has to be noted that the 53-year-old was recruited from Newcastle United and the Red Devils paid around 10 million pounds to secure his services, as per reports. He was described as “one of the top sporting directors in the world” by minority owner Jim Ratcliffe. However, the reports now say that it was also the INEOS boss, Ratcliffe, who engineered Ashworth’s departure.

Ashworth, who oversaw spending of close to 200 million pounds ($255 million) on new players since joining United, was sacked after a meeting with Chief Executive Omar Berrada after Saturday’s 3-2 home loss to Nottingham Forest, the Athletic reported.

In many ways an admittance of their failures, by United.

Man Utd continue to struggle on pitch

There’s no quick solution in sight as the club continues to struggle on the field as well.

United’s first loss to Forest at Old Trafford in more than 30 years on Saturday left them 13th in the table on 19 points, their lowest after 15 games since 1986.

Portuguese Amorim, recruited from Sporting Lisbon, has led United one win in his four league games in charge.

“We already knew (it would be tough),” Amorim said after the Forest defeat. “It will be a long journey but we want to win because this is a massive club.”

United travel to face Czech team Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday and before travelling to champions Manchester City on Sunday.

  • Revealed: Why Dan Ashworth left his job as Man United’s sporting director after just five months

Revealed: Why Dan Ashworth left his job as Man United’s sporting director after just five months

Dan Ashworth left his job as the sporting director of Manchester United after just five months as both parties agreed he was not a good ‘fit’ for the club.

Ashworth officially began work at Old Trafford on July 1 after a lengthy period of gardening leave at his former club Newcastle United.

However, his shock departure today is said to have been finalised in a meeting with United CEO Omar Berrada after last night’s defeat by Nottingham Forest.

There is not believed to have been a row but it was clear to all parties that the relationship was not working and Ashworth was not the fit club chiefs had hoped it would be.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United’s part-owner, was reportedly pivotal in the decision.

United are not thought to be searching for a replacement at this stage.

There is not believed to have been a row but it was clear to all parties that the relationship was not working

United say the agreement to rip up Ashworth’s contract was mutual – sharing the following statement: ‘Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement.

‘We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.’

Ashworth, 53, was appointed to oversee football performance and recruitment at the club and reported to Berrada, a recent arrival from Manchester City.

In turn, Jason Wilcox, United’s technical director, worked under Ashworth as part of the new-look hierarchy implemented by Ratcliffe.

Ashworth was involved in the Red Devils’ £200million spending spree during the summer with Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee also recruited as part of the substantial outlay.

He was subsequently quoted in the statements confirming each signing.

Ashworth was also part of the executive team that made the decision to hand Erik ten Hag a new contract and then sack him just a matter of months later.

His appointment at United came at the end of painstaking negotiations with Newcastle. Ashworth informed the Tyneside club that he wanted to move to Old Trafford in February and was reportedly open to taking them to arbitration.

Initially, Newcastle had demanded around £20m in compensation, although a compromise worth between £2m to £3m was eventually thrashed out.

‘Dan Ashworth is clearly one of the top sporting directors in the world,’ Ratcliffe said in February. ‘I have no doubt he is a very capable person.

‘He is interested in Manchester United because it’s the biggest challenge at the biggest club in the world. It would be different at City because you’re maintaining a level. Here it’s a significant rebuilding job. He would be a very good addition.’

Ashworth joined Newcastle after resigning from his technical director role at Brighton in February 2022. He previously held the same post with the Football Association.

Ratcliffe brutally described United as a ‘mediocre’ club paying the price for ‘very poor’ recruitment in a bombshell interview with fanzine United We Stand.

‘The club has drifted for a long period of time, a decade or so. Manchester United has become mediocre,’ Ratcliffe said.

‘It’s not elite and it is supposed to be one of the best football clubs in the world.

‘That’s what it used to be under Alex [Ferguson]. There is major change to come to achieve elite status.

‘But already there has been huge change at this club.’

Ratcliffe has also been left astounded by how out of touch United have been become with data analysis in comparison to their rivals.

‘Until we’re are as good as anyone in the world, then it’s not good enough for Manchester United. We must have the best recruitment in the world,’ he added.

‘Data analysis comes alongside recruitment. It doesn’t really exist here. We’re still in the last century on data analysis here.’

Fan who furiously confronted Roy Keane after Man United’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich reveals what what really happened in clash with Sky Sports pundit: ‘I feel sick when I look at him’

The fan who reportedly confronted Roy Keane following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town on Sunday has shared his version of events on social media.

Mail Sport exclusively revealed how Keane had snapped back at a fan who had been hurling abuse at him after the Premier League clash at Portman Road.

Keane was overheard inviting the fan to continue their argument out in the ‘car park’ moments after the game ended on Sunday afternoon.

The fan in question, Neil Finbow, later took to Facebook to describe the altercation – calling it his ‘new claim to fame.

Finbow wrote: ‘New claim to fame. Just been offered out into the car park by Roy Keane after a few choice words.’

He went on to add: ‘Even Jamie Redknapp had to come over to get him away. Just your average Sunday evening out.’

Finbow went on to detail the exchange, writing: ‘I was reminding him that he set us back five years and ruined our football club. I also mentioned how he wasn’t fit to step foot anywhere near our ground [Portman Road].

‘Oh, and I mentioned about him walking out on a World Cup and breaking Haaland’s leg and putting it in his autobiography. I hate the bloke, and that’s been boiling up since he got sacked all those years ago.’

When another Facebook user commented on Finbow’s post, saying, ‘I can see why he offered you out in the car park now. But fair dos mate for having the b*lls,’ Finbow replied: ‘The truth hurts, mate. I feel sick when I look at him.’

He added in another response: ‘Few home truths thrown at him, he decided to bite. Very unprofessional. I’m sure he had worse when he was playing.’

The incident unfolded when Keane, alongside fellow Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Izzy Christiansen, was receiving instructions from producers to return to the broadcast following an ad break.

A video shared exclusively by Mail Sport captured the moment Keane, 53, set his microphone down, put his hands in his pockets, and approached the fan who was located in the stands.

A heated back-and-forth ensued, with Keane repeatedly inviting the fan to ‘wait and discuss it in the car park’ as more insults were directed his way.

The situation escalated as other Ipswich supporters joined in, with one individual from the upper tier shouting: ‘F*** you, Keane!’.

A member of the Sky Sports production team eventually guided Keane back to the broadcast area as the fan appeared to relish provoking a reaction.

Redknapp also stepped in, exchanging a few words with the fan while a nearby steward attempted to diffuse the tension.

Keane’s tumultuous relationship with Ipswich Town fans stems from his stint as the club’s manager between 2009 and 2011.

During his tenure, Keane managed 81 games, winning 28, losing 28, and drawing 25. His side dropped as low as 21st in the Championship standings before he was sacked in January 2011.

Reflecting on his time at Ipswich, Keane has previously admitted that his ongoing feud with sections of the fanbase served as motivation during his time in charge.

Sunday’s confrontation with Finbow comes just months after another high-profile incident involving the Manchester United legend.

In September 2023, Arsenal fan Scott Law was convicted of headbutting Keane during a match at the Emirates Stadium.

Law was banned from attending football matches for three years after being found guilty of common assault at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court.

During that trial, Keane described the shock of being attacked while walking with fellow pundit Micah Richards to deliver post-match analysis:

‘There was lots of noise and shouting, as you would expect at a football match. I was just walking and, before I knew it, I was hit.

‘I felt the contact and fell back through some doors. I was absolutely not expecting it. The only way I can describe it is that I was in shock. I didn’t expect it to happen, not when I was in my workplace.’

Keane – who captained Manchester United during his playing days – revealed he suffered bruising to his chest and arms as a result of the assault.

The confrontation with the Ipswich fan came shortly after Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, began his tenure with a disappointing 1-1 draw.

Amorim’s side got off to a flying start, with Marcus Rashford converting an Amad Diallo cross just two minutes in.

However, United’s momentum quickly fizzled out, and Ipswich equalised through Omari Hutchinson’s stunning strike from outside the penalty area before halftime.

Speaking at the break, Keane criticised United’s cautious approach after their early lead: ‘Great start from United, bet the manager couldn’t believe it. United get a great start and then sit back, and I’m thinking, what are you waiting for? Go after Ipswich.

‘But they sit back and give them a lot of encouragement, and they certainly deserved their equaliser. I’d go back to a 4-4-2, big striker up front,’ he joked.

Ruben Amorim has dropped a huge hint as to whether Man United will pursue Viktor Gyokeres after the striker put in another stunning performance for Sporting Lisbon.

The Swede continued his stunning form under Amorim as the Sporting head coach oversaw a 4-1 win over Man City in his final home match ahead of his move to Man United.

Phil Foden had given Man City the lead in the fourth minute, before Gyokeres replied with three goals – two from the penalty spot – to help inspire Sporting’s shock win.

There’s been plenty of discussion surrounding the former Brighton and Coventry striker amid his fine goalscoring form and some have suggested Amorim may look to bring him to Old Trafford.

Now, the Portuguese boss has broken his silence on the matter and revealed when he expects Gyokeres to leave Sporting.

Speaking after the match, according to A Bola, Amorim said:  ‘If I start joking about this Gyokeres situation I’ll get in trouble.

‘This is my city, this is my country, so I’ll respect it. Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life will probably go somewhere else’.

Though a January move for the Sweden international appears to be off the table, Amorim appeared to hint that he could launch a summer move for Gyokeres.

Earlier in the night, United legend Rio Ferdinand tipped Gyokeres to follow Amorim to United after his stunning hat-trick against the Red Devils’ local rivals.

‘The recruitment teams in all the clubs in the Premier League must be scratching their heads about how they let him get away,’ Ferdinand said.

‘He hasn’t had a conventional route, his route to the top hasn’t been straightforward.

‘He was at Brighton as a kid, sold to Coventry, went on loan to Swansea, goes back to Coventry and does well, then goes to Sporting Lisbon.

‘He has had a journey where he has had to build himself and create what he is now.

‘You think ‘How has he been allowed to get out?’, all of a sudden when are seeing what he has got, maybe he has grown into what he is, the confidence, stature he has, the physicality, he might have had to wait for that to come.

‘A few times today he blew away from players, holding people off.’

The hat-trick took Gyokeres’ tally for the season to 23 goals in 17 matches this season, with his overall tally at Sporting now standing at 63 in 66 games.

Ruben Amorim may be on his way to Manchester United, but if Friday night’s performance is anything to go by he’s certainly leaving Sporting fans with a few parting gifts.

His side demolished Estrela Amadora 5-1 in Lisbon with Viktor Gyokeres dismantling the defence with four goals in a stunning performance to maintain the Portuguese champions’ perfect start.

Maximiliano Araujo netted the fifth goal for the hosts in the 85th minute, while Rodrigo Pinho netted in the first half for Estrela Amadora, but Sporting simply had too much to handle.

Gyokeres’ first goal came in the 19th-minute, profiting from a loose deflection inside the box to the left, before cutting in and curling past Estrela Amadora goalkeeper Bruno.

His second – 12 minutes later – was a powerful right-footed strike into the roof of the net from near the edge of the box, having intelligently beaten the offside trap.

And just before the break, the Swedish striker signed from Coventry City, completed his hat-trick in 23 minutes with a penalty, confidently converted.

Unsurprisingly given the scoreline, Amorim’s side put on an assured show for the Sporting crowd, who are waving goodbye to their boss.

With 20 shot and 65 per cent of the ball, it was perhaps a display that watching Manchester United fans might get excited about.

Gyokeres was in fact asked whether he would be joining Amorim at Old Trafford any time soon, replying: ‘I don’t know. I’m here, and as you can see, I enjoy it.’

He added: ‘Sad that Amorim is leaving, he’s done amazing here, we will do the same job and keep the same faith in the team. We all wish him the best.’

Amorim himself has faced questions all week on United’s interest ever since Erik ten Hag’s departure on Monday.

And that trend continued after the match, with the line of intrigue now turning to how he expects the Sporting fans to react in his final home game before he leaves.

‘In the next home game, whether we win or lose by 15-0, I’ll be there to see what the fans want to give me,’ he replied.

‘I understand their anger, but we move on and time heals everything. It was the best period of my life.’

Paul Scholes has named Manchester United’s worst signing of all time, after his old club were humiliated 3-0 by Liverpool on Sunday.

The Red Devils legend, whose glittering career at Old Trafford spanned two decades, won a litany of trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson including 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Champions Leagues.

During a fan-led debate with ex-Liverpool star Jamie Carragher and journalist David Ornstein, Scholes shared who he believes are the best and worst signings in Manchester United’s history, first waxing lyrical about the impact Eric Cantona and Wayne Rooney had on the club.

The Red Devils were resoundly beaten by Arne Slot’s Liverpool at Old Trafford, in the latest blotch on United’s legacy since Scholes’ retirement from football back in 2013.

The disappointing defeat led one fan to suggest that Antony is the worst Man United signing of all-time, given that the Brazilian was an unused substitute again during Sunday’s defeat and has only contributed 11 goals and five assists since his £85million transfer from Ajax back in 2022.

Antony, who was an unused substitute at Old Trafford at the weekend, was branded Man United’s worst signing of all time by a fan following his £85m switch from Ajax back in 2022

Offering a different view, Scholes told The Overlap’s Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet: ‘You know what, I was going to go a bit further back than that.

‘(Juan Sebastian) Veron was a good player, a great player in Europe and I’m not sure why it didn’t work out for him.

‘I go back to the goalkeepers, when we had to replace Peter Schmeichel which is always going to be difficult.’

‘Fabian Barthez was great, but I’m thinking more like (Massimo) Taibi, Mark Bosnich… I thought he was a good keeper at Villa, Mark. He came to us and was so unprofessional. Honestly, it was ridiculous.

‘In shooting practice, you normally have like 15-20 minutes, after three shots he was knackered. And I never realised, he couldn’t kick a football! Honestly, I’d never seen anything like it.

‘We played Everton away first game of the season and none of us picked up on it – he couldn’t reach the halfway line. And there was no wind, it was a perfect day.

‘And then you look at his feet… size 14s. Honestly, he was just kicking the floor. Disappointment.’

Going back to Antony, he added: ‘But yeah, when you talk about the money – and the value for money, it’s not been good has it? And think of (Alexis) Sanchez as well. Big disappointment from Arsenal.

‘My worst one? I’m going to go for Bosnich,’ Scholes concluded.

Joking in response, Carragher added: ‘He’ll be right on the socials, won’t he? He won’t take that lying down!’

‘He’ll have something to say won’t he?’ Scholes replied, in agreement.
