    “Mumbaikers Are Angry”: Internet Fumes Over Reverse Vada Pav

    The street food scene in Mumbai is incomplete without vada pav. This beloved Maharashtrian snack is a desi spin on sandwiches. A bite into the soft pav, stuffed with a fried, flavorful vada and garnished with spicy-tangy chutneys, is a food lover’s dream. However, food fusion trends have found their way to this popular dish as well. Recently, a social media user shared a startling picture of “Reverse Vada Pav” on X (formerly Twitter). It showed a fried potato vada peeking out from a hollowed brioche bun, with an array of chutneys smeared on the edges of the bun. The price of this unconventional vada pav is Rs 190. “People: the market will correct itself the market: (picture of the reverse vada pav)” read the text attached to the post.

    Here’s how people reacted to the post: 

    “Reversing all the progress our ancestors made in culinary arts (crying emoji).” wrote a disappointed user. 

    “Is this joke or what, reverse vada pav? We are happy with the straight combination of vada and pav,” commented another. 

    Mat kar bhai imagine. (Please stop imagining brother).” read a remark. 

    A foodie called the snack “the most unappetising thing” they had ever seen. 

    “Mumbaikers are angry right now,” said a distressed individual. 

    “Next on the menu ‘Upside-Down Pani Puri,’” suggested a person sarcastically.

    “Bro, this was absolutely unnecessary. This is not imagination, it is a nightmare turned reality,” noted another user.

    This is not the first time that vada pav got an eccentric culinary makeover. Previously, the internet went abuzz after a picture of croissant vada pav went viral. The photo presented viewers with a screengrab from a food delivery app. “Croissant Vada Pav – 2 pcs” read the text below the snap. The unique dish featured two croissants sliced from the middle. Smashed aloo bonda coupled with a spicy peanut powder spread were stuffed inside the croissants. No pav buns were used. Mint chutney, a lemon wedge, onion rings and two green chillies sealed the meal.

    Swiggy Delivers 11,000 Vada Pavs In One Single Order, Sets Guinness World Record

    Online food ordering and delivery company Swiggy has set a new Guinness World Record in collaboration with actor Ajay Devgn and director Rohit Shetty. The new record has been made for delivering the largest vada pav order – 11,000 vada pavs – in a single delivery. The order was delivered using Swiggy’s newly launched XL EVs for bulk deliveries. The vada pavs were delivered to children from the Robin Hood Army, an NGO that focuses on fighting hunger through surplus food distribution across multiple locations in Mumbai.

    Mumbai’s iconic vada pavs were delivered by MM Mithaiwala, who collaborated with the upcoming film ‘Singham Again‘ team. Swiggy XL, a fleet of electric vehicles introduced to efficiently handle high-volume orders, played an instrumental role in achieving this Guinness World Record.

    The first stop was Airport High School and Junior College in Vile Parle, where Ajay Devgn, Rohit Shetty and Swiggy Co-founder Phani Kishan received the order, creating a Guinness World Record for the largest number of Vada pavs delivered in a single order. The vada pavs were distributed across Robin Hood Army-supported schools in Bandra, Juhu, Andheri East (Chandivali and Chakala), Malad, and Borivali.

We’re going XL by teaming up with ‘Singham Again’ to set a Guinness World Record for the largest single food order for vada pavs. This exciting event perfectly captures Swiggy’s commitment to delivering food whether big or small-and celebrates the love for Mumbai’s iconic street food in a truly spectacular Singham style.”

They tend to be heavier than most bhajiyas and pakoras. Hence, the besan batter for them needs to be thicker. While making the batter, whisk well to get rid of lumps and ensure you don’t add too much water. If the potato balls are not coated properly before frying or if you use a batter that is too runny, you will compromise the taste and texture of the vadas.

    2. Add a little oil to the batter

    This is a tried-and-tested tip for getting the perfect besan batter for your batata vadas. While it may sound surprising to some, believe us, it can work wonders. If you’re using 2 cups of besan, add around 1 tbsp oil to the batter and mix well. Doing so can help you get a smoother batter. When you dip the potato balls into it later, you will not find it sticky.

    3. Make the batter first and allow it to rest

    A simple way to improve the overall consistency of your batter is to give it time to rest. Thus, ensure that you make it first – before you do any of the other steps of the recipe. Cover the batter and keep it aside. In the meantime, you can prep the other ingredients/ elements of this Maharashtrian recipe.

    4. Cool the potatoes for the batata vada

    Boil the potatoes and allow them to cool down for some time. Refrigerate them for 15-20 minutes and then peel them. When you do this, you’ll realise the peels come off easily and the stickiness of the potatoes is also reduced. Mash the potatoes well, but retain some amount of bite – depending on the type of texture you want the batata vadas to have.

    5. Pound the other ingredients for the batata vada

    6. Keep an eye on the temperature of oil for frying

    The final step is deep-frying the batata vadas. Ensure that you don’t pop them in before the oil has been heated enough. If you do, they may absorb extra oil and turn soggy. Given that the vadas are already heavy, this would make them quite unappetising. Additionally, don’t let the oil heat too much before you add the vadas in. If this happens, the coating may burn and the stuffing may remain undercooked.

For this, heat oil in a pan and add hing, garlic cloves, ginger, mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chillies, haldi, coriander, boiled potato, and salt. Mix well and keep it aside. Next, prepare a slurry by mixing besan with water and salt. Once done, pour a ladleful of the batter onto a heated tawa and spread it evenly. After it’s semi-cooked, take a knife and make a slit from the centre to one end. Now, place the aloo mixture on one end, green chutney on the other, followed by imli chutney and grated cheese. Sprinkle garlic chutney over it and fold all the edges one over the other, forming a wrap. Your vada pav wrap is now ready!

    Stick Vada Pav Recipe | How To Make Vada Pav On Stick At Home

    To make vada pav on a stick is pretty simple. This recipe was shared by digital creator @ohcheatday on Instagram. Follow these easy steps to make vada pav on a stick:

    1. Prepare Potatoes

    In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, chopped ginger and garlic in it. Saute until they start to splutter and then add green chillies and curry leaves in the pan. Mix well before mashing and adding potatoes to the mixture. Top it up with spices – turmeric, hing and salt – and combine ingredients. Remove from flame and keep it aside.

    2. Prepare Garlic Chutney

    Heat some oil in a pan. Once done, add dried red chillies and garlic cloves. Saute before adding some sesame seeds and grated coconut to the mix. Next, add salt, peanuts, amchur powder, and red chilli powder. Mix well and let it cool. Once it comes to normal room temperature, grind it in a blender.

    3. Make Vada Pav

    Heat your sandwich grill. Now take two medium-sized pavs and cut them from between. Apply a little butter on the sandwich grill and place the pavs over it. In between the pav slices, add a spoonful of the potato mixture. Top it up with some green chutney and sprinkle some freshly made garlic chutney over it. Now take some cheese and using it, pin a wooden stick in the potato mixture. 

    4. Cook The Vada Pav

    Add a dollop of butter over it and close the sandwich grill. Make sure the wooden stick is outside the grill area to avoid burning it. Cook it for 5-6 minutes and enjoy!
