    The Monday Night Football feature is generating more watch and wager interest as the first place Buffalo Bills (3-2) tackle the New York Jets (2-3) in a key AFC East game. The Week 6 schedule was a good one for public bettors, as NFL favorites went 12-1 straight up and 10-2-1 against the spread (ATS).

    The Bills have been held to just 276 yards offense at 4.7 yards per play against the Texans and 236 yards at 4.1 yards per play against the Ravens in their last two games losing on the road. Last week QB Josh Allen completed just 9 pases in 30 attempts without WR Khalil Shakir (ankle), who is questionable to play Monday vs. the Jets and a game-time decision. Shakier was leading the NFL in Expected Points Added (EPA) per target ahead of Week 5 action and a very efficient top target for Allen as the slot receiver.

    New York lost last Sunday in London 23-17 but held the undefeated Vikings to 253 yards at 3.8 yards per play. They also somehow lost 10-9 at home in Week 4 to the Broncos despite holding Denver’s offense to 183 yards at 3.3 yards per play. Jets QB Aaron Rodgers averaged just 3.9 yards per pass play in those two contests. The Jets 4.5 yards per play offense ranks No. 29 in the league.

    The Vikings and Broncos are top-3 in the league in blitz rate. But the Bills have the second-highest standard pass rush rate. Hurting the Bills cause further is edge rusher Von Miller remains out (suspended) and interior DT Ed Oliver (hamstring) will miss another game.

    Jets RB Breece Hall had a 24% target share in the first two weeks to lead all NFL running backs. The last three weeks the Jets faced three of the top six teams in blitz rate, and Hall was more involved in pass blocking. The Bills defense is surrending .44 EPA per target to NFL running backs (29th) and have struggled defending running backs out of the backfield going back to last season with top LB Matt Milano out of the lineup.

    Respected sports handicapper Bob Stoll, an advanced model statistics guru at Dr. Bob Sports, provided additional stats and notes on the Bills-Jets matchup with information you can bet on.

    • Defensive coordinator and new interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich named passing coordinator and QB coach Todd Downing the new offensive coordinator in hopes to jump start the offense with more creative play calling. New York averaging just 4.5 yards per play.
    • Buffalo’s defense will likely have nickelback Taron Johnson back on the field. Backup Cam Lewis is surrendering 2.06 yards per cover snap in the slot ranking 21st out of 22 qualifying nickelbacks. Johnson allowed only 0.74 yards per cover snap in the slot last season (4th) and is a massive upgrade over Lewis.
    • The Bills are surrendering a league-high 5.2 yards per carry, but they should improve as they got back starting LB Terrel Bernard last week after he missed two games and Taron Johnson had 17 run stops last season ranked 2nd among nickelbacks.
    • Aaron Rodgers will need to get the screen game going as RB Breece Hall has a 43% receiving success rate (2nd) and Buffalo’s defense is surrendering 0.44 EPA/target to opposing running backs (29th).
    • Josh Allen has a yards per attempt versus single-high coverages only 82% of his yards per attempt against two-high and he could struggle as New York’s defense has a 52% single-high coverage rate (7th-highest).
    • Jets cornerback DJ Reed is allowing just 0.32 yards per cover snap (3rd) and he will shut down WR Keon Coleman, whose 3 deep receptions rank 11th.
    • New York’s interior pass rush is dangerous with Pro Bowl Quinnen Williams next to Javon Kinlaw, who ranks 16th in pass rushing efficiency. The duo will wreak havoc across from Buffalo center Connor McGovern, who ranks 3rd-worst in pass blocking efficiency.

    This is a huge divisional game with the current standings, head-to-head play and schedules ahead. The Bills have a more favorable schedule the next month and favorites in all four games against Tennessee, at Seattle, home vs. Indianapolis before a much anticipated rematch at home vs. the Kansas City Chiefs on Nov. 17. The Jets travel to Pittsburgh and New England, home to tackle the Houston Texans and back on the road to Arizona and home vs. Indianapolis. Both the Bills and Jets have a bye in Week 12.

    College football Week 7 overreactions: Ryan Day is the ultimate underachiever, Texas is leagues ahead in SEC

    What’s to be done about Ryan Day? On one hand, most fans around the nation would kill for Ohio State’s double-digit win stability throughout his six-year career running the show in Columbus. On the other, Ohio State fans have every right to be upset with the results thus far. 

    Day seems allergic to winning games that actually matter. Following Saturday’s 32-31 loss to Oregon, the Buckeyes are now 2-6 against top five teams in the AP Poll under Day. They’ve lost four straight games against such opponents. 

    For at least three years, Michigan has been a constant thorn in Ohio State’s side. Now it’s a conference newcomer that had never won against a top-3 team; the Ducks were 0-19 all-time before their triumph against the Buckeyes.

    While it’s not fair to call Day’s seat hot — Ohio State can still make the Big Ten Championship Game, and it’s hard to envision a 12-team College Football Playoff without the Buckeyes — he is college football’s biggest underachiever. Day and Ohio State went all-in with an impressive transfer haul, supplementing a roster that saw a majority of its biggest stars return for one more Dream Team-esque run. They lured sitting UCLA head coach Chip Kelly to become their offensive coordinator. 

    And they wilted in their first real test of the 2024 season; no Wolverines required. That national championship mystique that permeated the Columbus air in the offseason has completely evaporated, replaced by a dark cloud of questions surrounding Day’s place as a high-level coach. 

    Here are four other overreactions as we put a bow on Week 7. 

    It’s Texas and then everyone else in the SEC

    The Longhorns are creating more and more distance in the conference race with each passing week, both with their play on the field and given other results happening around the SEC’s now vast southern footprint. On the same day that Texas demolished No. 18 Oklahoma 34-3, avenging last season’s loss, No. 7 Alabama struggled at home against unranked South Carolina, No. 8 Tennessee needed overtime to beat one of the worst Florida teams in quite some time and even No. 5 Georgia looked uninspired in a 41-31 win against hapless Mississippi State. 

    All those aforementioned teams already have at least one loss, too. Alabama and Tennessee both fell against unranked teams that they were favored by double digits against. Georgia lost to Alabama. At the time, that seemed like a powerhouse clash between two national title contenders. But the result becomes more dubious with each passing week. 

    For those still doubting their résumé, the Longhorns are currently 6-0 and are winning by an average of just under 37 points per game against a strength of record that currently ranks eighth in the nation, per ESPN’s FPI metric. They’ll have a chance to permanently silence any remaining detractors against Georgia next week. 

    For now, Texas looks head and shoulders above every other team in the SEC, and certainly most teams around the nation. 

    It might be time for UCF to retire the Gus Bus 

    It’s starting to putter out. Gus Malzahn’s UCF tenure may have hit a new low Saturday afternoon in a 19-13 home loss against Cincinnati. The same Cinciannti team that went 3-9 last year and won just one game in Big 12 play. 

    The Golden Knights even benched starting quarterback KJ Jefferson, a former Arkansas transfer, before the game kicked off to try and spark a stagnant offense. It didn’t work. His replacement, 17-year-old true freshman EJ Colson, was benched after four pass attempts. Jacurri Brown, who entered the game for Colson, did post an impressive 207 yards and one touchdown, but it obviously wasn’t enough in the end. 

    This was UCF’s third loss in a row as outright favorites. Malzahn’s squad hasn’t scored more than 21 points since a Sept. 14 win against TCU, and it’s combined to put 26 on the board in each of its last two losses. 

    Remember, prior to breaking into the collegiate head coaching ranks, Malzahn made his name as an offensive coordinator and, particularly, a quarterback guru. UCF currently ranks 12th in the Big 12 with 206.8 yards passing per game. 

    Malzahn is now 9-10 since UCF’s move to the Big 12, with a 4-8 showing against conference foes. The Golden Knights weren’t expected to compete immediately, but it isn’t promising that they’re showing signs of regression under a 58-year old head coach. 

    UCF should be set up well in the Big 12. Its unique position as the conference’s only representative in Florida gives it an inherent advantage in talent acquisition. Saturday’s result —  and the last month, really — raise serious doubts about Malzahn’s ability to fully capitalize on that. 

    Kenny Dillingham is coach of the year 

    What Kenny Dillingham is doing in Tempe should not be ignored. The 34-year old inherited an absolute mess from the Herm Edwards era. Edwards was fired three games into the 2022 season after a 30-21 loss to Eastern Michigan. 

    This decision came amid an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations committed by Edwards and his staff during the COVID-19 dead period. The Sun Devils had a mass transfer portal exodus following the 2021 season — not long after reports of the violations surfaced — that saw them lose the likes of quarterback Jayden Daniels (an eventual Heisman Trophy winner at LSU) and wide receiver Johnny Wilson (who developed into an NFL Draft pick at Florida State). 

    So Dillingham inherited a gutted roster and a program facing an uncertain future with punitive measures on the horizon when he took the job ahead of the 2023 season. Arizona State certainly took its lumps in his first year. The Sun devils only won three games. They weren’t expected to acclimate well to a move to the Big 12 in 2024. July’s media poll tabbed them to finish dead last in the now 16-team conference. 

    Fast-forward a couple months, and Arizona State is 5-1, with a 2-1 record in Big 12 play. Its latest win came against No. 16 Utah, the preseason Big 12 favorites. That was ASU’s first win against a ranked team under Dillingham, and it put the Sun Devils in position to at least flirt with the AP Top 25 Poll themselves. 

    Arizona State is just one win away from making a bowl game, at the very least. With how chaotic the Big 12 has been, it would be hard to completely discount the Sun Devils’ path to the Big 12 Championship Game — especially if they can beat teams of Utah’s ilk. It’s been nothing short of a miraculous turnaround under Dillingham, one that’s more than worthy of awards consideration.  

    Cade Klubnik engineering college football’s best individual turnaround 

    Clemson has eviscerated every opponent it’s stepped on the field against since its season-opening loss to Georgia, and the play of quarterback Cade Klubnik has been a big reason why. He is quietly engineering one of college football’s biggest individual turnarounds, after a rough first year as the Tigers’ starter, and he deserves more recognition when it comes to the discussion around postseason honors. 

    He threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s win against Wake Forest, completing 75.6% of his passes in the process. That was Klubnik’s fourth game with at least three touchdowns passing and third game with at least 250 yards through the air. His 17 touchdowns passing currently rank third among ACC quarterbacks, and he’s tied for the conference lead at his position with four touchdowns rushing. 

    Most importantly, Klubnik has only thrown two interceptions through six games. Turnovers were a huge issue for him in 2023 — nine of his passes were snagged by the defense — but he has taken great strides in the decision-making department. Clemson hasn’t played a difficult schedule over the past month or so, but the Tigers’ offense looks worlds better than it did a year ago with Klubnik running the show, even when adjusting for competition. 

    That could be just what the Tigers need to climb back to the ACC’s mountaintop.

    Mauricio Pochettino’s week of ‘speaking about confidence’ pays off for Musah and USMNT

    It is a rarity to see Yunus Musah without a smile. An ear-to-ear grin is a mostly-permanent feature for the 21-year-old midfielder.

    But as he sprinted towards the corner flag on Saturday night in Austin, Texas, having scored his first goal in a U.S. senior men’s national team jersey in his 42nd appearance, the sense of gratification on his face shined through — even for someone who usually has a happy expression plastered on.

    “That moment,” said Christian Pulisic, his AC Milan and USMNT teammate who provided the assist, “that’s why you play.”

    The 49th-minute goal in a 2-0 friendly win against Panama was also an immediate validation of the instincts of the team’s debuting head coach, Mauricio Pochettino.

    The 52-year-old Argentinian came into his first camp this week intending to spend time with every player on the roster and understand where they stood. The idea was to ensure each of them was handled the right way. It’s why Weston McKennie stayed on the bench on Saturday night; he had entered camp feeling some discomfort after playing in each of Juventus’ last six games, and Pochettino felt it was crucial not to take any risks with the midfielder. It was also why Musah was tested in a new role in his first game under the new regime.

    Musah reported to camp having played just 45 minutes in Serie A for Milan in September and zero minutes so far in October. Though typically a central midfielder cast in a box-to-box No. 8 role, Pochettino met with Musah and proposed deploying him wider on the right. Pochettino knew Musah had played that role before, both in Arsenal’s academy and also when he first moved to Spain’s Valencia five years ago. In that position, Pochettino felt Musah would have more freedom to push forward on the ball, one of his strengths, without the pressures of being a focal part of the build-up at a time when he isn’t playing regularly for his club and thus wasn’t in his best form.

    It worked to perfection early in the second half, when the U.S. built up down their left side through Antonee Robinson, Pulisic and Brenden Aaronson, and Musah came crashing into the box from the right to finish off a Pulisic cross.

    “It’s always worth trying to build his confidence and to (make him) feel again (that he is) a player that can perform on the pitch,” Pochettino said. “It was an important moment for him, to (show) trust in him, but maybe not to give him too much responsibility in the build-up. It’s only to be in a position that can help the team, and then he arrived there and scored.

    “Fantastic for him, fantastic for the team. And now maybe he’ll start to perform and behave in a different way, full of confidence. That is the important (factor) in our decision, is trying to help. We are here to help the player to find their best.”

    If there was a theme to the first night under Pochettino, it was exactly that: creating and building confidence. Confidence for each player, but also for a team that was winless in its previous four games. Copa America group-stage elimination was a crushing experience for a squad that knew how expectations were growing and understood how valuable a tournament run would have been on multiple levels, for them, the fanbase and the sport in the United States.

    Pochettino’s hire was meant to restore some of the confidence and belief in the program.

    Center back Tim Ream said Pochettino was “speaking about confidence all week”, and that it was reinforced and transmitted into the group by what he was asking the team to do against Panama. Mostly, players were told to be themselves, embrace their strengths and, as Musah said, “play free”.

    “He wants us to be solid defensively, and then have guys play the way they are comfortable playing and being confident going forward with the ball,” Ream said. “And everybody saw that, especially in the first 15 minutes. Guys were moving, (there was) intricate passing and getting the ball, moving quick and getting in and around their box. When he tells guys to go and be themselves, it’s a sign that he has confidence in you, and you can see that come out with all the guys out here.”

    Things were not perfect. Panama had good chances in the game. Matt Turner was forced into a big double save in the second half and they should have found an equalizer late in the game. As USMNT veteran DaMarcus Beasley said on the Turner Sports broadcast, there were also some mistakes in the build-up that top teams would punish.

    But, the U.S. won, with Ricardo Pepi adding the second goal in stoppage time.

    The result was needed, even if this was just a friendly.

    “I looked back at our recent form, and I was thinking, ‘Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve won’,” Turner said. “Since the Bolivia game (at Copa America, on June 23), right, since we’ve won a game and had a clean sheet? So, yeah, it’s nice to set off this era with a win and a clean sheet. It goes in waves, but winning is something that you learn. You can’t just take it for granted. It takes energy and focus for 90 minutes, especially at this level.”

    Pochettino will know that this win was important in building trust and confidence that the ideas he is installing with the team will lead to success. Musah’s goal reinforced that.

    The job now is to keep carrying it forward.

    “It’s the first step,” Pochettino said. “To start to grow and be better.”

    While non-league games continue to make the rounds and all schools finally played a league opener, some of the better teams in the area are just now starting to separate themselves from the pack.

    In a few leagues, the big head-to-head games are either coming this week or even the final regular season contest. In other words, there’s plenty of shuffling to come, plenty of meaningful games ahead for all local high school football fans to enjoy. Week 8 of the high school season did give some teams the chance to flex their muscles at this stage of the season.

    College football winners, losers for Week 7: Oregon gets historic win, Oklahoma’s Red River rout reveals trend

    Week 7 was always billed as a battle of heavyweights across college football. Against all odds, the slate lived up to the hype with four overtime games involving AP Top 25 teams and more top-10 teams falling down the stretch. 

    Most notably, No. 2 Ohio State fell to No. 3 Oregon for its seventh loss in eight tries against top-five opponents under coach Ryan Day. Oregon, conversely, picked up its first win against a top-two opponent in program history and took control of the Big Ten title race. 

    Elsewhere, No. 1 Texas established itself as a serious national title contender by eviscerating No. 18 Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry. LSU also got back into the conference title race by shocking Ole Miss. Utah may have fallen out for good after losing to Arizona State. 

    Here are the biggest winners and losers of college football’s Week 7, including a more real clarity in conference championship races. 

    Loser: Ryan Day

    Ohio State paid more than $20 million to put together this roster over the offseason. The Buckeyes ran off incumbent starting quarterback Kyle McCord and replaced him with Will Howard. Safety Caleb Downs (Alabama) and running back Quinshon Judkins (Ole Miss) transferred into the program. The Buckeyes have every advantage and more in one of the most championship-or-bust seasons in college football history. 

    It took one test for the house of cards to crumble. Worse, it was embarrassing. Day’s handpicked quarterback failed to recognize a clock situation and slid as time expired for the loss. Despite being in field goal range, Ohio State ran dropback passing. Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was called for offensive pass interference, which pushed the Buckeyes out of field goal range. 

    Now, Day is 1-7 against AP top-five opponents since the pandemic. The loss was the first against a non-Michigan Big Ten opponent since 2018. It was the program’s second consecutive loss to Oregon. 

    Winner: Oregon coach Dan Lanning

    Ducks coach Dan Lanning has lost a few heartbreakers over the years, but Saturday in Eugene was his crowning moment. Oregon shocked Ohio State 32-31 with a game-winning field goal by Atticus Sappington with 1:47 remaining. Laning has been a rising star in the industry for years, but the win against Ohio State brings a new level of credibility. The win was the first over an AP top-two team in program history and should elevate the program to No. 2 for the first time since Marcus Mariota graduated in 2014. 

    Loser: Oklahoma

    Prior to coach Brent Venables’ arrival in 2022, Oklahoma had scored a touchdown in every version of the Red River Rivalry dating back to 1998. Before that, that streak went all the way back to 1977. After a devastating 34-3 loss against No. 1 Texas, the Sooners have now failed to score a touchdown twice in the rivalry in three years under Venables. 

    The offense was a total disaster once again, eliciting comparisons to the embarrassing 49-0 loss in 2022. Quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. tried his best as the first true freshman to start for OU in the rivalry game in history, but he finished below 100 yards passing until a late drive in garbage time. In his defense, Oklahoma also got only 64 yards rushing from its running backs, and only one wide receiver had more than 20 yards. 

    The Sooners rank last in the SEC in almost every offensive category. It’s fair to give Venables at least one mulligan for injuries. But two bad losses to the Longhorns in three years? That’s a trend, and it’s very much not a good one. 

    Winner: Free football

    Oct. 12 was already viewed as one of the best days of college football in a long time. To make matters ever better, the sports gods blessed us with tons of free football. Four different games involving ranked opponents went to overtime for the first time since Sept. 27, 2003. No. 13 LSU pulled off the upset by shocking No. 9 Ole Miss. USC gave No. 4 Penn State all it could handle before dropping in overtime. Purdue was painfully close to upsetting No. 23 Illinois but failed on a potential game-winning 2-point conversion. Florida failed to score in overtime as No. 8 Tennessee survived a putrid performance. Even when the top teams don’t lose, they’ve looked highly vulnerable. That could set up a wild finish to the season. 

    Loser: Alabama

    I tend to give teams one mulligan, a weird game that you chalk up to 18-22 year olds having a bad day. For Alabama, it was the astonishing road loss against Vanderbilt. After following that disasterclass up with a narrow 27-25 win over South Carolina at home, the Crimson Tide are officially on fraud watch. 

    The Tide again struggled to run the ball against South Carolina and put together a disaster of a defensive performance against an offensively inept team. The Gamecocks had touchdown drives of 16 and 10 plays, and Alabama simply couldn’t get them off the field. This is a flawed, inconsistent team that’s not playing championship football. 

    The 2024 Cyclones joined the 1938 Cyclones as the only teams in Iowa State history to start 6-0 after beating West Virginia 28-16 in a big road game. Running back Carson Hansen posted three touchdowns in the win as Iowa State nearly reached 400 offensive yards in a big win. 

    A fun little side plot: West Virginia honored former tight end Anthony Becht after inducting him into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame. His son, Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht, celebrated by dicing up his father’s alma mater to the tune of 265 yards and a touchdown. The younger Becht did not receive a scholarship offer from WVU but has become one of the Big 12’s top passers. 

    Loser: College kickers

    Rumors that kickers are becoming too good may have been somewhat premature. Yes, Ole Miss kicker Caden Davis hit a career-long 57 yarder vs. LSU, but there were some otherwise abysmal showings on Saturday. Kickers for both Texas and Oklahoma missed easy field goals, while Longhorns kicker Bert Auburn actually got a second attempt… and missed it, too. Oregon’s Sappington was lucky to get another field goal attempt after whiffing on a 44 yarder early in the game. South Carolina’s Alex Herrera was put in a brutal position by his staff, but missed a 51-yarder in the fourth quarter that would have given South Carolina the lead. The chaos of college kickers always keeps the sport unpredictable. It’s not going anywhere soon. 

    Penn State coach James Franklin openly loves Warren, and he put together one of the best tight end receiving performances in history in a 33-30 overtime victory against USC. Warren caught an absurd 17 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown as offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki leveraged his mismatch early and often. 

    Warren has been a strong contributor all season, including a 146-yard performance against Bowling Green. However, he hit another level in the huge road victory to give Penn State a bonafide playmaker. 

    Loser: Utah

    The Utah story is reaching a brutal conclusion after a hobbled quarterback Cameron Rising played a miserable game in a shocking 27-19 loss against Arizona State. In his return from a hand injury, Rising threw three interceptions and the Utes got into the end zone just once in the loss as the program fell to 1-2 in Big 12 play. 

    Dropping to Arizona and Arizona State in successive weeks makes the Utes’ path to the Big 12 Championship Game far more difficult. Games against BYU and Iowa State — both undefeated — still lie ahead. What was supposed to be a coronation for Utah is suddenly turning into a disaster for the second straight season. 

    Winner: Vanderbilt

    The Commodores have no interest in being a one-hit wonder. A week after shocking Alabama, Vanderbilt beat Kentucky 20-13 behind two touchdown throws from QB Diego Pavia. The win makes for the program’s best start since a 5-1 record in 2008, when Bobby Johnson coached the program. Vanderbilt has reached two SEC wins in a season only once since 2018. The vibes could not be better in Nashville.

    Athlete of the week: Mackenzie Toney is looking to put a bow on her junior season with a deep playoff run

    Mackenzie Toney does it all for the Callaway softball pitching staff. The junior will find her way into the circle under any circumstances, whether it is a starter or in relief. Toney has pitched 89 innings in the regular season, 37 more than the next-highest Cavalier.

    “It means a lot that the coaching staff trusts me to pitch in big games whether I’m starting or coming off the bench,” Toney said. “I just stay ready for my number to be called.”

    Toney took no time adjusting to the high school ranks, immediately earning a role as a starting pitcher as a freshman. It has been a steady rise to the point where she is now the bonafide no. 1 pitcher on the staff.

    “On the mound, I can control my emotions more than my freshman year, because I would get frustrated, and I got a lot better with that,” Toney said. “I have a lot more spin. I even build up more speed with my pitches. I have a lot more now than what I even had last year.”

    Before finding pitching at 11 years old, Toney was a shortstop and an occasional outfielder. Now, she is practically a pitching specialist, though she has occasionally played first base during the travel ball season.

    The regular season is a wrap as the Cavaliers head into the playoffs that start early next week. As Callaway awaits its playoff opponent, Toney can’t help but look back on how quickly three seasons on the diamond have flown by.

    “It is crazy how fast it went, I might have cried a little on senior night,” Toney said with a chuckle.

    Toney will have to play her senior season without her partner in crime, Karlie Walker. The senior catcher/third baseman helped Toney get acclimated to the varsity team and the two have formed quite a bond over the years.

    “I cried with her on senior night. I’m gonna miss her,” Toney said. “It’s gonna be different for me my senior year.”

    Now, Toney is building a new comradery with freshman catcher Ella Kelly that will continue into next season.

    “I’ve been knowing Ella for years,” Toney said. “Working with her has been great and she is really learning how to catch my pitches.”

    When Toney first put on the jersey for the varsity team she was almost exclusively a pitcher that relied on a pinch hitter. Not anymore. Toney has worked tirelessly to improve her swing and it has paid dividends in the diamond this season as Toney hit .312 with six RBIs in the regular season.

    “I have been working at that, especially during the travel ball season. We’ve been doing a lot of hitting during the summer, and it also helped with coming into high school, but also my mentality changed, stepping into the batter’s box I have more confidence now than what I did have my freshman year because I would just go up there thinking ‘I’m about to strike out.’” Toney said. “Now, I’m more relaxed when I go up there.”

    The junior also hit her first two home runs on varsity this year, the only two home runs any Cavalier hit in 2024 in fact.

    “Those were amazing, they felt great,” Toney said. “The first one it thought ‘How in the world am I doing this.’”

    What Oklahoma State football should focus on during its bye week | Football

    Oklahoma State badly needs answers.

    The Cowboys, sitting at 3-3 amid a three-game losing streak, are underperforming across the board. Adjustments and fixes could turn their luck around, and now they have a bye week to make some before they play at No. 14 BYU next Friday.

    “It starts out with just little mistakes,” OSU offensive lineman Preston Wilson said. “It’s not just one person or one specific group. It’s a bunch of little, small things that add up into big mistakes and cost us.”

    Here’s what OSU should focus on during its bye week:

    Solving the quarterback problem

    Obvious, but necessary.

    Starting quarterback Alan Bowman has been benched for Garret Rangel in two of OSU’s past three games. Bowman has thrown two interceptions in three straight outings and hasn’t completed more than 52% of his passes since Week 3.

    Mike Gundy has a decision to make in the hope of a midseason surge. Experience or a fresh, I-got-nothing-to-lose mindset of a backup?

    Bowman is the most experienced option and quarterbacked OSU to 10 wins last season. Rangel, though, could use in-game reps and can do more with his legs than Bowman. There’s Zane Flores, too, though it’s unlikely he will get the call, as he’s yet to make his OSU debut.

    Regardless of who Gundy starts, the Cowboys need certainty at the most important position in the sport. Without it, there’s little chance of a turnaround.

    “We need to look and evaluate,” Gundy said when asked if Rangel would start. “I don’t want to say something now, and then it may not be true. We’ll need to look where we’re at.”

    Finding ways to get Owens, Gordon going

    Wide receiver Rashod Owens has caught eight passes across OSU’s last three games. Running back Ollie Gordon — the 2023 Doak Walker Award winner — has rushed for more than 50 yards twice this season.

    That’s not enough production from two of the Cowboys’ top playmakers. Offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn should look to Owens and Gordon to help OSU’s offense and relieve its quarterback dilemma.

    If the Cowboys can get Gordon going and establish a run game, it will take pressure off whoever is playing quarterback — Bowman, Rangel or Flores.

    And Owens’ big-play potential and red zone skills should be a point of emphasis. The passing game needs a spark, which Owens can provide, just as he did last season.

    Run defense, tackling

    OSU’s run defense hasn’t been great, but it looks even worse because of its tackling struggles.

    In the past three games, there have been moments when the Cowboys have hit a runner behind the line of scrimmage but don’t wrap up and bring him down. Then, it balloons into a long run — like when Utah running back Micah Bernard ran for 62 yards after OSU missed three tackles.

    Similar mishaps happened against Kansas State and West Virginia, which led to K-State averaging 8.8 yards on the ground and WVU running for 389 yards. The Mountaineers and Wildcats ran all over OSU’s defense, and their quarterbacks had no problem finding running lanes, too.

    The Cowboys’ run defense needs adjustments, schematically and physically.

    “We have to do a better job of fitting the run,” Gundy said. “Without seeing it (on film), it looked like to me (that) we had our worst tackling day of the year (against West Virginia).”

    Ohio State at Oregon

    Something has to give Saturday in Eugene as both No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Oregon are 5-0 including 2-0 in Big Ten play. The Buckeye’s and Ducks are two of nine undefeated Power Four schools. The new conference foes last played in the 2024 national championship won by the Buckeyes. Oregon and Ohio State both rank in the top-25 for both rushing and passing defense. The Ducks defense will be put to the test as Ohio State has scored 20 touchdowns in 21 red zone trips this season.

    Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel opened the season as the Heisman favorite, and he’s now the fifth choice at +1400 odds, or 14/1. He’s passed for 1,449 yards and 11 touchdowns and leads the country with a 77.8 completion percentage. Ohio State QB Will Howard has thrown for 1,238 yards and 12 TD’s plus 4 rushing touchdowns.

    The Buckeye’s have arguably the best set of RB’s and WR’s in the country. They have played a softer schedule, but the Buckeye’s defense has dominated holding opponents to a nation-low 203 yards per game while registering 17 sacks. Ohio State buried both Michigan State (38-7) and last week Iowa (35-7) limiting the Hawkeyes to just 224 total yards offense.

    Pro Football Focus rates Ohio State as college football’s top team. The Buckeye’s lead the nation in overall team expected points added (EPA) per play, in EPA allowed, and EPA per play on offense.

    The most watched and wagered game is set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC. Ohio State is taking more money, and Buckeyes backers have wagered more money on the spread and moneyline than any other team for Week 7 at the leading online sportsbooks.

    “Even on a loaded slate like this one, the action on Ohio State-Oregon stands out from the rest of the pack,” Fanatics Sportsbook staff reports. “If you combine spread and moneyline, Ohio State-Oregon has drawn over two times more handle than any other Week 7 game.”

    Oregon, along with LSU are the most popular moneyline underdog bets this week.

    Geoff Schwartz, an 8-year NFL offensive lineman who played right tackle at Oregon, chimed in on X with added insight on the Ohio State-Oregon matchup.

    Ohio State (+290) is currently the favorite to win the national championship with Oregon at +1000, according to national championship odds at FanDuel Sportsbook. The winner will have a leg up towards the Big Ten title and new 12-team College Football Playoff while the loser remains in the mix for the CFP.

    Penn State at USC

    Another key Big Ten battle also has the road team favored with undefeated Penn State (5-0) at Southern Cal (3-2). Lincoln Riley is 41-4 at home as a head coach in his career, and now USC is a home underdog. The Trojans have played a far tougher schedule (No. 4) while the Nittany Lions SOS ranks No. 80. Bob Stoll of Dr. Bob Sports is a notable and respected handicapper who uses dozens of stats and categories in formulating models and picks.

    Stoll notes that the Nittany Lions have moved the ball well on offense, averaging 7.3 yards per play against teams that would allow 6.0 yppl to an average offense. But Penn State has averaged just 24 points in two games against better than average defensive teams Illinois and UCLA, and USC’s defense (0.6 yppl better than average) rates about the same as those two defenses that held Penn State’s attack in check.

    “The Nittany Lions should not be favored by 3 points or more in Los Angeles,” Stoll says.

    Texas vs. Oklahoma

    The Cotton Bowl in Dallas hosts the Red River Rivalry, or Showdown between new SEC rivals Oklahoma (4-1) and Texas (5-0). Oklahoma has won four of the last five meetings including last season 34-30 as a 5-point underdog when the Sooners entered No. 12 and Texas ranked No. 3 in the country.

    FanDuel Research analysts pick Oklahoma (+14.5) to cover the spread in a higher scoring game (over 49.5). Sooners freshman QB Michael Hawkins Jr. is a Dallas native and plays in his fourth game while making his second start. He’ll be without a number of OU leading receivers on the injured list. Hawkins will become the first Oklahoma quarterback to start the Red River Showdown as a true freshman. Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers returns from an oblique injury suffered Sept. 14 vs. UT San Antonio. Texas is the largest favorite in the series since 2005, which was the last time the Longhorns won the national title. Texas ranks top-5 in yards per play offense, yards per game and points per game margin.

    Ole Miss at LSU

    Mixed picks on this SEC Saturday night showdown in Baton Rouge. Mississippi is No. 1 in yards per play and yards per game margin. LSU ranks No. 43 and No. 30 in those categories. However, Ole Miss is playing a 7th straight week and 3rd straight conference game while LSU is rested and ready off a bye. The Rebels and Tigers were both ranked top-20 last season as well and Ole Miss won a wild shootout over LSU, 55-49.

    Dr. Bob Sports notes that LSU fits a greater than 63% ATS situation for teams coming off a win and a bye playing a conference home game and either an underdog or favorite up to 3 points. Additional parameters apply in a large sample size of more than 200 games, and LSU will catch another break if the nation’s leading receiver doesn’t play, Ole Miss senior Tre Harris (885 yards). He suffered a lower-leg injury in the first half of last week’s win over South Carolina. Harris is questionable to play, along with at least 10 other Rebels players on the injury list.

    LSU’s strength has been its offense that has been 1.2 yards per play better than average (6.8 yppl against teams that would allow 5.6 yppl to an average team). Mississippi’s offense is better, as the Rebels have been 1.8 yppl better than average when they have the ball (7.9 yppl against 5 FBS teams that would allow 6.1 yppl to an average team.

    Dr. Bob has a strong Opinion on Ole Miss noting the math model, but the strong situation favors LSU.

    Playbook Sports adds an awesome angle that is 15-2 ATS favoring Oregon as a home underdog from game 6 forward if both teams own a 1.000 winning percentage and if the home ‘Dog scored 16 or more points in its last win.

    No team plays a tougher 4-game stretch than LSU, who battles Ole Miss and then two road games at Arkansas and Texas A&M before a bye week to tackle Alabama.
