Perfect records, conference rivalries on the line in Week 6 of high school football in mid-Missouri | Prep Sports

Helias and Capital City each made cases to be the top high school football team in Jefferson City, throughout the 2024 season. The Crusaders and Cavaliers each look to stake a claim as the top squad in the state capital Friday night.

Reigning Central Missouri Activities Conference champion Helias is fresh off a 29-22 overtime loss to Rock Bridge last Friday. The Bruins scored 22 unanswered points in the clash to snap the Crusaders’ 12-game CMAC winning streak.

Warriors Athlete of Week: Warriors’ Dunham at home on the court – Brainerd Dispatch

BRAINERD — Since seventh grade Karley Dunham just knew.

Her belief and hope were reaffirmed as a freshman when the 6-foot outside hitter was promoted to the Brainerd Warriors varsity volleyball team.

Dunham just knew she was going to play college volleyball. She was right. The senior will play next season at Bemidji State University. To solidify her role on the team, Dunham committed her offseason to becoming better. She played with the Kandi Elite 17-1s AAU club team that went 28-0 and

won the Gold Division Gold Bracket

    June 24-29 in Orlando, Florida.

“In seventh grade, I just realized that I love volleyball,” Dunham said. “I didn’t see going without it. When I was a freshman, too, I just knew four years wasn’t enough for me. Both my mom and my aunt played college volleyball. They were always big supporters of my playing. We have some family friends who like it so they were all big influences on me. I just really liked it for myself. My parents weren’t pushing me to play. They just supported it and helped me get better. I just really liked it on my own.”

This fall she’s proven her worth by leading or being in the top three of most statistical categories for Brainerd.

In 50 sets played, Dunham has 126 kills for a 2.5 kills per-set average. She’s hitting .195. She leads the team with 35 ace serves and has added 17 blocks, 336 digs and 209 serve receives.

    Steve Kohls / Brainerd Dispatch

While she’s leading in most statistical categories, she’s also leading with her voice and actions.

“She’s really helping the younger kids,” Warriors head coach Rick Kuehlwein said. “She’s matured as a young lady. She’s ready for the next level and she’s looking forward to it. She’s a pretty good role model. She’s a captain. She’s a two-year captain. I’ve only had two of those before in my tenure here. In my 35 years of coaching, I’ve only had three two-year captains and she’s one of them. That speaks a lot.”

I’ve learned a lot with my attacks and I was able to translate that to my defense.

    Karley Dunham

Dunham said she recalled how her older teammates like Kate Stadum treated her as a freshman and she wanted to pass that on to her younger teammates.

“I think for me this year it was really important because I remember when I played as a freshman,” Dunham said. “We have three freshmen on the team who have all seen playing time. For me to relate with them was important. I think it’s just built a lot of relationships and a lot of trust in our team. I just wanted to display that same leadership I received when I was young and build those relationships with the younger girls.”

    In Brainerd’s 3-1 loss to Class 3A’s

    sixth-ranked Alexandria

Thursday, Sept. 26, Dunham finished with 17 kills, five blocks, 20 digs and two ace serves.

    Steve Kohls / Brainerd Dispatch

“I just had a lot of confidence going into that game,” Dunham said. “I have a lot of family from Alexandria so they were all there. I just had a lot of people I knew in the stands so I just wanted to perform. Plus, some of the girls on the Alexandria team I play on my club team with so it’s always fun to compete with them. I just really wanted to perform well and show out against them.

“Their blocker that was on me, I play with, so I knew how she performs. Both of the people that blocked me I knew how they operated so that helped me out a lot. I just kind of found where the defense was struggling and really shot for those spots.”

Kuehlwein was pleased with Brainerd’s start against the CLC-leading Cardinals. The Warriors won the first set 25-23. After a hiccup in the second set, the Warriors battled Alexandria to 25-22, 25-22 final sets.

“We were trying to get her the ball a little more often,” Kuehlwein said. “A tournament ago, I yelled at my setter and told her you need to get the ball to Karley. She’s the only one who is finishing on our team right now. We had her ready to play against Alexandria. She’s playing outside hitter for us this year, but when she goes to Bemidji she’ll play right-side hitter. That’s a natural position for her. We have her outside because we need to hit more. She hits everywhere well.”

Brainerd Warrior volleyball senior Karley Dunham reaches over the net with the ball Monday, Sept. 30, 2024, in the Brainerd High School gymnasium.

    Steve Kohls / Brainerd Dispatch

Kuehlwein said Dunham’s arm extension from the right side is much higher which will make her a more effective right-side hitter. He said it’s higher and quick and she’s a natural right-to-left hitter when she’s swinging.

Dunham said she’s also picked up different shots and she’s adjusting her speed and strength on her attacks depending what she sees from the defense.

It’s her defense, however, where she believes she’s made the biggest improvement.

“I just feel a lot more comfortable playing in the back row,” Dunham said. “I felt more comfortable reading other players and what they were going to do and just getting to the ball faster and seeing all of the different attacks. I’ve learned a lot with my attacks and I was able to translate that to my defense.”

In a 3-1 loss to Fergus Falls Sept. 24, Dunham tallied 33 digs, nine kills and two ace serves. Brainerd went 2-2 in the

    Duluth East Tournament

Saturday, Sept. 21 and Dunham collected 49 digs and 19 kills to go with an ace serve, and block.

“I would say that my reading off of the opposing team’s attack has improved,” Dunham said. “I’ve just been really trying to figure out where they’re going to go around the block and watch their shoulder and hand. Just throughout the season, I think I’ve improved a lot in that aspect of it.”

Brainerd’s Karley Dunham hits the ball against Sartell Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, at Brainerd High School.

    Steve Kohls / Brainerd Dispatch

For her four-year varsity career, Dunham has played in 297 sets and owns 556 kills, 93 ace serves, 107 blocks and 552 digs.

“She’s good in the back row,’ Kuehlwein said. “She’s not as good as she can be, but she plays really well. She wants to win and it wears on her a little bit because she knows we can win more.”

Said Dunham: “I think we’re building confidence. We’ve switched our lineup a lot. We have a lot of players that are stepping up and I think that in the next few games, we’re definitely going to be seeing some good outcomes. We’ve been working hard and once we start switching things up things are starting to click.”

  • Dr P. Manokar- The Week

    Dr P. Manokar- The Week

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the biggest pandemic India is facing today, said Dr P. Manokar, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiology, & Clinical Lead Heart Failure & Transplant Program, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, Vadapalani. While CAD is on the decline in western nations, in India, it is on the rise. On the occasion of World Heart Day, with the theme, ‘Use Heart for Action,’ Dr Manokar outlines the imperative strategies India must take to bring down incidences of coronary artery disease.

    Risk factors for CAD

“High incidence of diabetes is the foremost risk factor in India. Compared to other countries diabetes in India is more aggressive, strikes younger Indians and even those with lean phenotype,” says Dr Manokar, “We are the highest risk race in the world for CAD and diabetes is a major cause.”

    Manokar

    Dr P. Manokar

While family history is an important risk factor, psychosocial stress is also a major cause for CAD. For most patients, the coronary event is preceded by a stressful social event such as job or financial loss, marital discord etc. Sedentary lifestyle and lack of healthy habits can also lead to CAD. Alcohol consumption among diabetics is an indirect risk factor for CAD.

    Diagnosis

Clinical evaluation is the primary step for diagnosis of CAD. Investigation by treadmill test is the most reliable tool to rule out heart disease. Dr Manokar recommends treadmill test once every two years for those over 40 and every year for people with diabetes. Used with discretion, CT Angiogram is a foolproof diagnostic test to rule out CAD.

    Treatment options

Cardiologists advocate lifestyle changes as the first step in the treatment of CAD. Patients are asked to reduce weight, exercise and make dietary changes. This is followed by medication to control risk factors such as diabetes, BP, high cholesterol etc. Patients are given blood thinners, cholesterol lowering drugs or drugs to increase blood flow to the heart, depending upon their condition. If these measures fail, invasive treatment such as angioplasty is the next option.

    Angioplasty

Balloon angioplasty or percutaneous transluminal angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a minuscule balloon to stretch open a narrowed or blocked artery. Several recent advances in angioplasty have improved outcomes remarkably.

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention is an angioplasty procedure that involves inserting a drug-eluting stent into the artery to open up blocks and allow blood to flow freely, with the drug preventing rejection of the stent by the body.

In the case of recalcitrant calcified plaque in the artery, Rotablation Angioplasty is performed, where a catheter with a rotating burr is inserted into the artery to grind away the plaque and widen the artery. Orbital atherectomy (OA) is yet another advanced minimally invasive procedure that removes plaque from artery walls to treat narrowed arteries and is used to prepare calcified plaque before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and peripheral percutaneous endovascular interventions. Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) uses acoustic pressure waves to break up calcium deposits in the arteries. Laser coronary angioplasty uses a laser to treat coronary artery disease (CAD). Interventional cardiologists also employ a retrograde technique to open a chronic total occlusion (CTO) by advancing a guidewire into the artery distal to the occlusion. Almost all types of complex blocks and heart diseases can be address by the technically advanced angioplasty today.

Monday Night Football Week 4: Titans at Dolphins, Seahawks at Lions – how to watch, game time, TV channel, streaming

Week 4 brings us another doubl-header for Monday Night Football. First the Miami Dolphins will take on the Tennessee Titans, then the Detroit Lions will host the Seattle Seahawks in a potential playoff preview.

The earlier game tonight features the Miami Dolphins hosting the Tennessee Titans. The Titans have been spinning their wheels over the last couple years, and while they have some good pieces they’re still looking for their first win. The Dolphins, meanwhile, are adrift at sea following yet another scary concussion for Tua Tagovailoa. Miami was supposed to be a contender in the AFC this year, but are now trying to make due with Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle at quarterback.

This game takes on added significance given the devastation from Hurricane Helene earlier this week.

The Dolphins enter the game as 2.5-point favorites at home.

The later game will be between the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks. These two teams are remarkably similar. Not only have they executed shocking turnarounds over the last three years, they feature two of the biggest QB renaissances in the NFL with Jared Goff and Geno Smith. Just three years ago, both quarterbacks were considered disappointments and bridges for teams bound for high draft picks. Now, they’re orchestrating high-powered offenses and leading two teams that nobody wants to see come to town.

The Lions are 3.5-point favorites at home.

    Chris’ Picks

Dolphins vs. Titans: I wouldn’t have a ton of faith in either one of these teams. But if I’m going to make a pick, I suppose I’ll take the Dolphins at home. They still have a ton of speed on offense, if if they’re held back by some major questions at quarterback.

Lions vs. Seahawks: This is a tough one, but I think I’m going with the Lions at home. The Lions are a tough, physical team that can compete with anyone in the NFL. And while the Seahawks’ defense is doing it’s best “Legion of Boom” impression, their defensive front has been hit very hard by injury. They’re getting Kenneth Walker back, but I don’t know if their offense will be able to do enough against Aidan Hutchinson and the Lions’ defense. Overall, I’m not sure if this will be a defensive slugfest or a high-scoring shootout, but I’m pretty sure it’ll be a fun game.

Titans vs Dolphins Expert Predictions for Week 4 Monday Night Football

Week 4 of the 2024 NFL season concludes with another Monday Night Football doubleheader. First, the Tennessee Titans and Miami Dolphins kick off their Week 4 matchup. Then, shortly after, the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions conclude Week 4.

The Newsweek Sports staff has predictions for both games. Below are predictions for Titans vs. Dolphins (click here for predictions on Seahawks vs. Lions).

MIAMI GARDENS, FL – DECEMBER 11: Tyreek Hill #10 of the Miami Dolphins carries the ball against the Tennessee Titans during the first half at Hard Rock Stadium on December 11, 2023 in Miami Gardens,…

    Cooper Neill/Getty Images

James Brizuela: The Dolphins have struggled over the past two weeks, but they appear to have settled on a quarterback that might just help the team get over their early season woes. Tyler “Snoop” Huntley is a mobile quarterback who should fit in just right for this once-great offense. With the Titans being a mess on both sides of the ball, the Dolphins can squeeze by with a much-needed win.

    Prediction: Dolphins 24, Titans 20

Valentina Martinez: Both the Titans and Dolphins are struggling teams, but one team has to win the Monday Night Football game. I’m taking the Titans on Monday night since the Dolphins are still navigating the loss of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

    Prediction: Titans 27, Dolphins 24

Matt Levine: The Dolphins will be relying upon Tyler Huntley in this game, potentially giving them some life within the offense. However, since Tua Tagovailoa has gone down, Miami hasn’t looked the same. Tennessee has the weapons on offense to make this game close but star wide receiver Tyreek Hill will be the difference.

    Prediction: Dolphins 20, Titans 13

Eva Geitheim: The Titans will beat the Dolphins because they have a quarterback (though head coach Brian Callahan might disagree).

    Prediction: Titans 17, Dolphins 13

Jeremy Hanna: The Dolphins’ passing game is going to suffer this week with Tua Tagovailoa out against one of the toughest passing defenses in the league. That being said, Miami has an excellent weapon in running back De’Von Achane. If Miami utilizes him properly, then they can still beat a tough Titans defense.

    Prediction: Dolphins 20, Titans 17

Noah Camras: Both teams desperately need a win, but the Dolphins’ quarterback change will be the difference in this one. Tyler Huntley will be the perfect quarterback to run the offense due to his dual-threat capabilities, and he’ll lean on his weapons — Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and De’Von Achane — to get a much-needed Week 4 win to move to 2-2 on the season.

    Prediction: Dolphins 24, Titans 17

  • College football Week 5 winners and losers: Notre Dame leads way

Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love (4) and offensive lineman Pat Coogan (78) celebrate a touchdown during their game against Louisville at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024.

No. 14 Notre Dame is never going to live down this month’s loss to Northern Illinois, especially with the Huskies dropping two of three since the upset in South Bend.

But the College Football Playoff math still favors the Fighting Irish: win out and you’re (very likely) in the 12-team field.

Saturday’s 31-24 victory against No. 17 Louisville will help repair Notre Dame’s reputation. In a game they had to have given the lack of major contenders on this year’s schedule, the Fighting Irish overcame a sloppy start to beat a team ranked near the top of the ACC.

In fact, this win against the Cardinals may end up being the high point on Notre Dame’s record heading into the final playoff rankings in early December.

  • Fantasy Football: 5 Players You Shouldn’t Start in NFL Week 4

Fantasy Football: 5 Players You Shouldn’t Start in NFL Week 4

Week 4 of the NFL season is just around the corner, and football is in full swing. As always, surprises abound. Teams that were expected to struggle are off to hot starts, while some potential Super Bowl contenders sit at 0-3 or 1-2.

Fantasy football has been equally unpredictable, and Week 4 promises more of the same. After a less-than-stellar showing last week with our sit suggestions, we’re confident in this week’s picks of players to avoid in your starting lineup.

    1. Anthony Richardson, QB, Indianapolis Colts

Richardson has struggled with consistency, completing only 50% of his passes so far this season. Over the last two weeks, he’s totaled just 21.94 half-PPR points, a sharp drop from his impressive 31.08 points in Week 1. This week, he faces a tough Steelers defense, which has allowed the fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks and the fourth-fewest to wide receivers. With those factors in play, Richardson should be on your bench.

    2. Jaylen Waddle, WR, Miami Dolphins

Without Tua Tagovailoa, Waddle’s production has taken a major hit, and it won’t get any easier with new quarterback Tyler Huntley under center. Waddle hasn’t seen more than five targets in any game this season. To make matters worse, the Dolphins face a Titans defense in Week 4 that has allowed the third-fewest fantasy points to wide receivers. Waddle’s outlook is not promising.

    3. Garrett Wilson, WR, New York Jets

Wilson faces a tough matchup against the Denver Broncos. Wilson will likely be shadowed by Patrick Surtain II, arguably the best cornerback in the league. Surtain has already held elite wideouts like DK Metcalf, George Pickens, and Mike Evans to under 30 receiving yards this season. Expect similar struggles for Wilson in this game.

    4. D’Andre Swift, RB, Chicago Bears

Swift has yet to find his rhythm this season, tallying just 68 rushing yards on 37 carries. With his lackluster performance, the Bears may gradually shift the workload to rookie Roschon Johnson, starting this Sunday against the Rams. Swift’s struggles, combined with the potential emergence of Johnson, make him a risky play this week.

    5. Isaiah Likely, TE, Baltimore Ravens

After an explosive Week 1 performance against the Chiefs, Likely has been quiet, with just three catches for 30 yards on four targets in the last two games. Facing a tough Buffalo Bills defense that has only allowed three tight ends to score more than 8.0 PPR points this season, Likely’s fantasy ceiling is low heading into Week 4.

These five players face tough matchups and circumstances that make them risky starts this week. Proceed with caution and consider other options for your fantasy lineup.
