    College football is in full swing and with conference play starting, each game matters just a little bit more. Each week, we have seen some great performances and some upsets that many didn’t see coming.

    It’s what has made college football such a fun sport over the years and has kept it going strong. As we enter into Week 4, we have some crucial matchups coming down the pipeline.

    But which ones are the most “must-watch”? Luckily for you, here at Newsweek Sports, we got you covered.

    Here are the five biggest “must-watch” games on the docket for this weekend.

    5. University of Louisiana-Monroe @ No. 1 Texas

    While this game may not be the most exciting, Arch Manning is scheduled to make his first start for the Longhorns. That alone makes this game a must-watch on the schedule to see how he can perform.

    Texas is heavily favored in this matchup and Manning has looked the part when playing. But until he starts out a game with all the pressure on him, we won’t know how it will look. The Longhorns should win this matchup, especially with them knowing that SEC play starts the following week.

    4. Cal @ Florida State

    The curious case of when Florida State will win a game has started as the Seminoles enter this game with a record of 0-3. Nobody expected them to be this bad but alas, here we are.

    They host the Golden Bears this weekend, who have surprised people by going 3-0 to start the year. If Florida State is to grab its first victory, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei will have to be much better. This game could be one of the Seminoles’ last chances to get a win before the tougher games on their schedule kick in.

    3. No. 6 Tennesee @ No. 15 Oklahoma

    This will mark the first SEC game for the Sooners as they get a tough test in the Volunteers. Oklahoma will try to make a statement with Tennesee coming to Norman but their work could be cut out for them.

    The Volunteers have looked like one of the best teams across the entire country this season, averaging 62.7 points per contest. Quarterback Jackson Arnold will need to have himself a day to keep up with the Tennesee offense, otherwise, things may get away from Oklahoma fairly quickly in this game.

    2. No. 12 Utah @ No. 14 Oklahoma State

    This could end up being one of the better games this season, with both teams looking to make some noise in the Big 12. Utah gets a chance to go on the road to Stillwater and shut down the Cowboys early on in the year.

    Oklahoma State loves to run the football and it could make life tough on the Utes. But both teams can score the football, scoring over 40 points per game on average. This could end up being a shootout which likely favors the Cowboys in the end.

    This game takes home the crown for the weekend schedule, giving fans a massive Big Ten showdown. The Trojans come in looking to stake their claim in the Big Ten as this will be their introduction to the new conference.

    While Michigan hasn’t looked the same so far this year, playing at The Big House is never easy. The Wolverines made a change at the quarterback position for this contest, potentially giving them more firepower.     Walker sat out Seattle’s Week 2 matchup against the New England Patriots, a 23-20 win in overtime.

    In his place, Charbonnet got the start, rushing 14 times for 38 yards with a touchdown. He also had five receptions for 31 yards.

    In Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, Walker had 20 rushes for 103 yards and a touchdown. However, he’s been dealing with an oblique issue ever since.

    Fantasy Football Impact of Kenneth Walker Injury

    While Charbonnet struggled to get the run game going in Week 2, rushing for just 2.7 yards per attempt, he still put together an impressive fantasy football outing, securing 17.9 PPR points.

    Now, he’ll get to go up against a Dolphins defense that has struggled against running backs this season. In Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Dolphins allowed 128 rushing yards and a touchdown, with an average of 4.9 yards per carry. In Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills, the Dolphins allowed 108 rushing yards and two touchdowns, with an average of 4.2 yards per carry. Last Thursday, Bills running back James Cook had an incredible 28.5 PPR points against Miami.

    Charbonnet is a perfect replacement for Walker in fantasy and should be started in all leagues. He should be a top 10 running back again, and could even finish as high as top five depending on his ability to find the end zone.

    Seahawks Injury News

    In addition to Walker, offensive tackle George Fant and linebacker Jerome Baker are listed as doubtful to play on Sunday. Fant is dealing with a knee injury, while Baker is dealing with a hamstring injury.

    Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu has been ruled out for Sunday’s game with a knee injury. Safety K’Von Wallace (shoulder), linebacker Boye Mafe (knee), wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (foot), and tight end Pharaoh Brown (shoulder) are all listed as questionable.

    The Seahawks are looking to move to 3-0 on the year after wins against the Broncos and Patriots. As for Miami, they’ll be looking for backup quarterback Skylar Thompson to get them back on track after Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion last week and was officially placed on injured reserve.

  • Hamilton fires 10 football coaches following Week 4 incident

    Hamilton High School has fired 10 members of its football coaching staff this week following an on-field altercation involving Hamilton administration at last Friday’s game versus Sheffield.

    Jerel Blanchard, Hamilton’s former coach, told The Commercial Appeal this week that he and nine other coaches were fired on Tuesday after Blanchard said an incident involving Hamilton’s football staff and school athletic director Alfred Burchett occurred during the game.

    The incident, Blanchard told The Commercial Appeal, evolved around a player’s eligibility at Hamilton’s Sept. 13 game with Sheffield. Blanchard said the team had not received notification of the player’s ineligibility, but Burchett entered the playing field in an effort to remove the player from the game.

The majority of games did not experience significant weather effects during the three weeks of gameplay. However, this week there might be chances of severe thunderstorms resulting in game delays. Let’s find out which college football matchup has the highest risk of rainfall and severe thunderstorms.

    Following the Colorado Buffs’ heroic victory of 9-28 against the Colorado State Rams, the team was looking forward to their upcoming faceoff with the Baylor Bears. But it looks like the weather has some other plans for them, as the Boulder region is at risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Even the National Weather Service confirmed the same, saying there are high chances of rain around Folsom Field.     Weather uncertainty is a big turn-off for football fans. As they eagerly wait to witness their favorite teams battling against each other. After the Colorado Buffs thunderstorm reports now there are possibilities of a heat wave hitting Oklahoma around 3 pm to hit 100 degrees. Resulting in possible game delays for their much-awaited showdown against the Utah Utes at Boone Pickens Stadium. Moreover, this kind of extreme heat will surely affect everything, including the health of the players.

    Nicole Auerbach’s Week 4 College Football Playoff projection

    Texas jumped up to No. 1 in both the AP poll and my College Football Playoff projection this week, mostly thanks to a shaky overall performance by Georgia in the Bulldogs’ 13-12 win over unranked Kentucky. But it’s also a testament to the strengths of the Longhorns, who already had the most enviable backup quarterback situation in the country coming into last Saturday, with a five-star member of football royalty waiting in the wings behind a Heisman Trophy-caliber starter. Then, Quinn Ewers suffered an abdominal/oblique injury, and Arch Manning was thrust into the game against UTSA.

    Manning was — in a word — dazzling. Two touchdowns in his first three plays, including a 67-yard touchdown run . Five total touchdowns. One bonafide star. And that’s what made it easy to slide Texas up to the top spot without knowing exactly when Ewers will return. This team can withstand an injury at the most important position in football. Plus, it’s got a nice win at Michigan as a feather in its cap already — while Georgia was fortunate to escape from Lexington, Ky., without a loss this past weekend. That’s why I’ve swapped the two and plugged Texas into the SEC champion spot and put Georgia as the top at-large team.

    Ohio State and Miami remain at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, after the Buckeyes’ idle week and yet another blowout win for the ‘Canes. They’ll stay in their current spots until they face teams that actually teach us something about them. I’ve moved Kansas State into the Big 12 champion slot after an impressive win over Arizona last Friday night. That conference still feels like it could be anyone’s to win, and while that wasn’t a league game — yes, I know, it’s very confusing — it still gives me a better sense of the pecking order of the top Big 12 teams. I’ve kept Utah in the mix as an at-large team because I still believe the Utes, when healthy, are one of the toughest outs in the country. Kyle Whittingham teams don’t beat themselves.

    Oregon had an important win over in-state rival Oregon State last weekend, a get-right game for its offense after two somewhat lethargic showings. So, the Ducks remain in the 5-8 seed range as the second-best team in the Big Ten to date, followed by Penn State, which sneaks in as an at-large team. Meanwhile, in the SEC, Alabama is rolling behind Jalen Milroe. Tennessee is cruising behind Nico Iamaleava. And Missouri came back to earn a hard-fought victory over a solid Boston College team. All three of those teams should stay in the CFP hunt as the season goes on.

    Nicole Auerbach participated in a mock CFP selection exercise last week, learning how to select, seed and bracket the new 12-team Playoff field.

    New to my 12-team bracket this week is UNLV. The Rebels are 3-0 on the season for the first time since 1984 with two wins over Big 12 opponents (Houston and Kansas). Barry Odom’s team is one to watch in the Group of 5 race because of both its on-field performance but also the resume it is building that would stack up favorably against top contenders in other Group of 5 conferences. Of course, UNLV would have to win the Mountain West to be in the mix for a CFP bid, but it’s certainly playing well enough to do just that so far this season. So, let’s plug the Rebels into the bracket this week as a new favorite to land that coveted top-ranked G5 champion spot.

    A scheduling note: I’ll project the 12-team CFP each week for the rest of the season, and once the selection committee begins unveiling its rankings in November, I’ll analyze them each week as well.

    Week three high school football district observations

    Three weeks are complete in the high school football season and while Sidney and Stanton/Essex are already two games into district play, Clarinda and Shenandoah open district play Friday.

    This week, we take an early look at each area district and where our four area teams stack up.

    Class 2A District 7

    Let’s start in Clarinda where the Cardinals are on the road Friday against the three-time defending state champion in Van Meter. The Bulldogs, though, are coming off a loss last week at home against Humboldt, ending the program’s 26-game winning streak.

    Clarinda, though, focuses on themselves this week after a tough loss at home last Friday against Treynor. It was the third time in four years Clarinda has lost to Treynor, so that by itself isn’t a huge cause for concern, but the injury troubles mount. They didn’t look like the same team after Bryson Harris went off with an injury Friday. How does this team respond going forward?

    So, where does Clarinda stack up in the district? The Cardinals lost big to Van Meter last year but were easily better than everyone else. Nobody in the district is undefeated through three games with Chariton joining Clarinda and Van Meter with 2-1 records. Chariton beat Albia Friday, the same Albia team that beat district foes Interstate 35 and Centerville. Those two teams are 1-2, meanwhile, Clarke is 0-3 and lost 85-0 last week and has lost its three games by a combined score of 205-14.

    The top four qualify for the playoffs with the top two getting a first round home game.

    Class 1A District 8

    What a performance by Shenandoah Friday on Homecoming! Not only did the Mustangs have an impressive blowout win after two close losses, but there are a couple Shenandoah athletes quite high in the state-wide statistical leaderboard. Sophomore quarterback Joey O’Rourke passed for 433 yards and five touchdowns last week. He now has 841 passing yards for the season, a total that ranks first in Class 1A and fifth in the state, all classes. Cole Graham’s 21 receptions are also tops in 1A and has him tied for ninth in the state, all classes. His 420 receiving yards are third most in the state, all classes and his six touchdown catches are one off the state lead.

    Shenandoah was in a tough district last year and has the same crew this year with Underwood, AHSTW and Treynor leading the way. AHSTW and Treynor are the only teams with winning records, though, going into district play. Underwood has lost to two state-ranked teams in 2A in Van Meter and Kuemper Catholic while AHSTW’s only loss is to Kuemper. The Vikings and Eagles meet this week. Treynor beat Clarinda by 14 two weeks after Clarinda beat Shenandoah by one. Then, there is 1-2 Red Oak. A week after Clarinda dominated the Tigers 46-0, Red Oak went out and beat West Central Valley by eight, the same West Central Valley team that beat Shenandoah the week prior. Missouri Valley, meanwhile, hasn’t been close in any of its games yet, losing 131-13. Shenandoah starts at Missouri Valley Friday, which is the game I’ll have live coverage from Friday.

    The top four qualify for the playoffs with the top two getting a first round home game.

    Class 8-Player District 10

    Two weeks of district play are complete here with CAM the only team standing at 2-0 in the district and the Cougars look like the favorite through two weeks after rolling past East Mills 66-24 last week. In a seven-team district, there is one team that doesn’t play a district game each week and the two teams that have had a non-district game over the last two weeks, Fremont-Mills and Exira-EHK, are both 1-0. Both have wins over Stanton/Essex, although the Knights won by a lot more.

    Sidney is even with East Mills at 1-1 and lost to the Wolverines two weeks ago. The Cowboys travel to Exira-EHK Friday, which will give us a little more knowledge on both teams. A win there could set the Cowboys up pretty good going forward to at least stay in the running for a playoff berth.

    Sidney got its running game established again last week with Braedon Godfread and Michael Hensley both above 100 yards. Godfread is averaging more than 100 rushing yards per week and is currently second in the district in that category.

    Stanton/Essex is even with Griswold at 0-2 in the district. It’s been a tough two weeks for the Vikings. It looked like they had Exira-EHK beat two weeks ago, but lost the lead late and then last week, they played with Fremont-Mills well into the second half but the Knights poured it on late. It doesn’t get easier for the Vikings with a trip to East Mills Friday.

    The playoffs are different in Class 8-Player with 10 districts across the state. The top three in each district automatically advance to the postseason with a pair of fourth-place teams also qualifying based on district point differential, meaning those teams need to have close losses.

    This season’s competition will be unlike anything witnessed before with UEFA abolishing their old group stage format in favour of an all new-league phase consisting of 36 teams.

    In another first for the competition, the opening round fixtures will also be played across three nights instead of two, with six games scheduled to be played on the traditional Tuesday and Wednesday matchday slots as well as Thursday. 

    Each and every one of these games will be broadcast live for fans to enjoy, so a single game isn’t missed.

    Amazon Prime are the new kids on the block for Champions League coverage earning holding rights for one match a week under a new TV agreement.

    The streaming platform have been given the top pick each Tuesday, with football broadcaster veterans TNT Sports showing the remaining ties.

    TNT Sports will be the main broadcaster for this year’s Champions League, showing more than 185 matches across the season. 

    For the next three years, BBC Sport will show the highlights from each Champions League game after all the action has drawn to a conclusion each matchweek.

    The Georgia Bulldogs held on for a 13-12 win at Kentucky last Saturday, but it wasn’t enought to keep Georgia at the top of the college football AP Top 25 poll. The Texas Longhorns are the new No. 1 into Week 4 of the 2024 college football season.

    The top-10 is completed by Ohio State, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Missouri, Miami, Oregon and Penn State giving the SEC six teams in the top-10 and Big Ten three teams. No. 11 USC had a bye last week and begins Big Ten play at defending national champion Michigan, who makes a quarterback change ahead of the Sept. 21 Big Ten opener at the Big House in Ann Arbor.

    Miami in the ACC is the other top-10 team, and for the first time since 1955, both Florida and Florida State have losing records through three games.

    Alabama’s 42-10 road win last Saturday in Madison over Wisconsin earned Crimson Tide QB Jalen Milroe AP national player of the week. Milroe passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more in victory.

    But Texas’ 56-7 route of UT San Antonio earned backup QB Arch Manning runner-up honors for national player of the week. Manning took over for an injured Quinn Ewers early in the second quarter and completed 9 of 12 passes for 223 yards and 4 touchdowns and added a 67-yard TD run in the victory.

    Another story is developing out of Las Vegas. The UNLV Rebels (3-0) beat their second Big 12 team this season with a 23-20 upset of Kansas as 7-point road underdogs Friday in a rematch of last season’s Guaranteed Rate Bowl. The UNLV Rebels are moving up inside the top-30 of the AP Poll getting votes, but cracked the Top 25 Coaches Poll this week at No. 25 for their first Top 25 ranking in program history.

    UNLV has an 18.2% chance of making the 12-team College Football Playoff field, according to ESPN’s playoff projections. That places UNLV fourth among Group of 5 teams, behind Central Florida (UCF, 36.7%), Memphis (23.1%) and fellow Mountain West team Boise State (23.5%), who announced last week their intentions to leave the Mountain West by 2026 and join the revived Pac 12 conference.

    Notable Line Moves Week 4

    Circa Sports in Las Vegas opens the weekly college football lines on Sunday morning, and here are the notable line moves with updates on FanDuel.

    There are more big games and key Top 25 matchups as the season moves along. That includes next week in Tuscaloosa when SEC heavyweights Georgia and Alabama battle in a rematch of last year’s SEC Championship game won by the Crimson Tide 27-24 to knock undefeated Georgia out of the 4-team College Football Playoff. The advance betting line on next week’s game is Georgia -2.5 with a game total of 51 points, according to odds at FanDuel Sportsbook. Both teams have a bye this week ahead of the huge Southeastern Conference showdown.

    Also making headlines in the political news is that former President Donald Trump will attend the Georgia-Alabama game, but not cast a vote on the winner.

More eyes and bets will be on those biggest games again this weekend with next week’s Georgia-Alabama game to draw the biggest betting handle yet this college football season.

    Ranking 134 college football teams after Week 3: Texas or Georgia? Give it a month

    Editor’s note: The Athletic 134 is a weekly ranking of all FBS college football teams.

    You sometimes have to sit in awe of what Georgia has done. The Bulldogs now have 43 consecutive regular season victories. Until this past Saturday, none of them had come by a three-point margin or smaller.

    But every once in a while, Georgia has a weird performance, usually against Missouri or Kentucky. This year, it was Kentucky’s turn. Georgia won 13-12 in Lexington and needed a fourth-quarter comeback to do it, one week after Kentucky lost 31-6 to South Carolina and cost itself “College GameDay” hosting honors. Welcome to the weirdness of college football.

    As a result, Texas moves up to No. 1 in this week’s edition of The Athletic 134, the third different No. 1 team we’ve had in four weeks. The Longhorns lost Quinn Ewers to injury against UTSA, one week after the quarterback’s dominant performance at Michigan. But his replacement Arch Manning didn’t miss a step, and actually took many himself, with four passing touchdowns and a 67-yard touchdown run. Only time will tell on Ewers’ status, but the Longhorns are rolling in all phases right now, even with the backup quarterback on the field. So they take the top spot.

    But guess what? Almost exactly one month from today, we’ve got Georgia vs. Texas in Austin.

    These rankings are starting to find their level now. Almost every team has played at least one notable opponent. The wild swings will be fewer, though there are some this week (hello, Georgia State). The head-to-head results still play a heavy role at this point. The deeper into the season we get, the less transitive things will become.

    1-10

    Along with Texas’ move up to No. 1, there are some slight tweaks here. Tennessee leapfrogs Miami to No. 5 because the Canes’ opening win against Florida doesn’t look as good as it did at the time. Tennessee’s win against NC State looks better now. Penn State also falls to No. 10 after Oregon got right in a 49-14 win at Oregon State and Missouri beat Boston College at home, a good win for the Tigers. Penn State’s win against West Virginia has also lost its shine as the Mountaineers are now 1-2.

    Without many ranked matchups or upsets in Week 3, there are also only a few moves in this group. LSU slides up one spot to No. 14 after coming back to beat South Carolina on the road, while Kansas State beat Arizona 31-7 to move up to No. 15. Oklahoma drops two spots to No. 16, and the Sooners’ offensive issues are concerning, especially in the pass game, though the defense has been stout. Tennessee travels to Norman this week.

    Welcome to the top 25, Illinois and UNLV. Both have wins over Kansas. The Illini have really taken care of business through three weeks, while the Rebels are 2-0 in Big 12 play with wins against Houston and KU.

    Here come the shakeups. I really wanted to put Memphis in the top 25. They’ve played really well all season. They’re right there. But a win against Florida State just doesn’t mean what it used to (sorry, Noles — more on you later). Iowa slips to No. 29 after needing a second-half comeback to get past a winless Troy team.

    Washington State shoots up to No. 34 after beating Washington to move to 3-0. The Cougs have two Power 4 wins, and quarterback John Mateer is a whole lot of fun. Louisville remains at No. 35 because the Cardinals have only played Austin Peay and winless Jacksonville State. UCF pushes up to No. 36 after a big comeback win at TCU.

    Indiana fans were very upset the Hoosiers didn’t move much after putting up 77 points on a bad FCS team. I said I just needed to see them play better competition, like Louisville. Well, a 42-13 win at UCLA was what I wanted to see, so the Hoosiers jump from No. 82 to No. 38. Pitt makes a similar jump up to No. 39 after another fourth-quarter comeback win, this one against West Virginia, to move to 3-0.

    Georgia State rockets up from No. 116 to No. 42 after beating Vanderbilt. I have a feeling this is Vandy falling back to earth, but with a limited sample size, this is what happens. So although Virginia Tech handled Old Dominion, the Hokies drop because that loss to Vandy was so recent. (Georgia State’s loss is to Georgia Tech.) Welcome to the top 50, No. 48 Toledo, after whipping Mississippi State 41-17.

    51-75

    I realize Liberty keeps winning and keeps dropping. The Flames, now at No. 52, just haven’t been playing up to their ranking. They didn’t play great against Campbell, needed a comeback against New Mexico State and were pedestrian against UTEP. Fresno State, meanwhile, beat New Mexico State 48-0 on Saturday. Texas State only slips one spot to No. 58 after a three-point home loss to Arizona State.

    Wisconsin drops to No. 66 after a 42-10 loss to Alabama. I know it’s a steep drop for a loss to Alabama, but the Badgers have just not been good at any point this season, and they don’t get any benefit of the doubt. Duke is 3-0 but drops a few spots to No. 60 after needing a fourth-quarter comeback to beat UConn. Florida tumbles to No. 67 after an ugly loss to Texas A&M and its backup quarterback. Appalachian State falls to No. 69 after needing a second-half comeback against East Carolina in a 21-19 win.

    76-100

    Baylor moves up a few spots to No. 76 after beating Air Force. No. 79 Houston may be rounding into competent form after following up a good performance against Oklahoma with a 33-7 win against Rice. Mississippi State looks like one of the worst Power 4 teams after getting drubbed by Toledo at home and dropping to No. 81. The same goes for UCLA, now at No. 86 after the blowout loss to Indiana to go with a last-second win against Hawaii.

    But it’s even more true for Florida State, now at No. 87 as the only 0-3 team in the Power 4. The only reason the Seminoles aren’t lower is because they’ve played three pretty decent teams. But don’t lose to Cal next week and make it 0-4.

    Western Kentucky is up to No. 88 after beating Middle Tennessee 49-21, looking like the WKU of old. Sam Houston continues to look improved after beating Hawaii and is now up to No. 94.

    Not much change in this group, including at the bottom. Kent State was already No. 134, and the Golden Flashes might stay there for a bit. Trailing Tennessee 37-0 after one quarter and 65-0 at halftime, coming off an FCS loss, is as ugly as it gets.
