Arnold takes on Mosley in this week’s Diego’s Burrito Factory High School Football Game of the Week

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -Our Diego’s Burrito Factory High School game of the week this week is the Bay County rivalry game between Arnold and Mosley set for Tommy Oliver Friday night. Let’s start with the Marlins camp. Coach Jason Griffin and his staff have certainly turned things around in short order at Arnold. Last year the team winless, unable to score hardly any points at all. This season, six wins in the first 8 games, with the most recent of those wins coming last week at home against Fort Walton Beach. And next week the Marlins will take on Rickards in a game that could earn Arnold a playoff berth. So much to feel good about at this point. Still this week, the task ahead is daunting, given they’re taking on an 8-0 Mosley team that’s basically steamrolled every opponent so far this season.

“You know it’s undeniable, it’s a great football team that Mosley has got this year.” Coach Griffin tells us. “You know Tommy Joe has done a great job with them. I think they’ve got 22 seniors over there, all experienced football players that have been in his program for a long time. so you know they’ve done a great job, and they really have an outstanding football team. There’s no way around it, we’ve got a Herculian task ahead of us this week. You know it’s a great challenge but at the same time you know we’re going to try to stay focused on what, on the positives here. From where Arnold’s been to be playing for the outright county championship against a great Mosley team and to be in that football game is a great accomplishment for our guys. You know I think our guys are going to be focused on, this week on improving and getting better as a football team. And then going out and giving Mosley the best we’ve got and we’ll see how it turns out.”

As for the Dolphins, well again a perfect 8-0, and coming off the 37-28 win over their big district rival Niceville. The Dolphins still with some work to do next week against Gulf Breeze to lock down a district title, and certainly not overlooking the vastly improved Marlins. Still coach Whiddon expecting a lot of his guys, they want to be unbeaten and take the number one seed in the region.

“And just what goes along with that. You know obviously you get into the playoffs, that means you get home games all the way through. But it also means you’re going to get everybody’s best shot. From here on out. And you know we talked about how climbing the mountain is really hard. And I tell them I’ll defer to Coach Saba on this one, staying at the top of the mountain is even harder. And so that’s the message to the team, that we’ve got to stay hungry, and we’ve got to be humble. And continue to get better at every single day.”

Mosley has won six straight in this series and seven of the last nine. That game at Chapman Field set for 7 Friday night and is one of several we’ll feature on Friday Night Overtime.

High School Football observations going into Week 8

The high school football season is down to one final Friday in the regular season for the smallest four classes.

Let’s take a look at what we know and what we still need to find out about our area team as the regular season wraps up Friday.

    Almost playoff time

Let’s start with Clarinda and Class 2A District 7 where it’s pretty easy to figure out going into the final week. Cardinal Country gets a lot of miles on Highway 2 Friday, making the trip to Centerville. The Cardinals and Big Reds are both 3-1 in district play with the only loss for both coming against Van Meter. Van Meter is locked into the top seed out of district and the winner of the Clarinda/Centerville game will be the district’s No. 2 seed, which means a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The loser will be seeded third and have to travel in the first round Friday.

    People are also reading…

Chariton and Interstate 35 are currently tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in 2A-7 but the Chargers play last place Clarke Friday while the Roadrunners have to deal with district champion Van Meter on Friday.

Class 1A 8 is a bit more complicated. Shenandoah is in a good spot but hasn’t yet clinched a playoff berth. A Shenandoah win Friday at AHSTW or an Underwood win Friday at home over Red Oak would put the Mustangs in the playoffs. But if Shenandoah loses and Red Oak wins, then the Mustangs would be in a three-way tie for third with Red Oak and Underwood, meaning the final two spots would come down to the 17-point tiebreaker. The top two in point differential for district games only (up to 17 points) would make the playoffs. Underwood has secured the top spot in that scenario. But, if Red Oak were to make up 32 points on Shenandoah, the Tigers could squeak in at the expense of the Mustangs.

Let’s look at the other scenarios regarding those two games (Shenandoah/AHSTW and Red Oak/Underwood). If Shenandoah loses and Underwood wins, the Mustangs would be seeded fourth out of the district with AHSTW second and Underwood third. If Shenandoah wins and Red Oak beats Underwood, then the Mustangs would jump all the way up to No. 2 seed in the district with AHSTW third and Red Oak fourth. If Shenandoah wins and Underwood wins, then the 17-point tiebreaker would come into play between Shenandoah, Underwood and AHSTW for the second, third and fourth spots. Underwood would get the No. 2 seed in that scenario while Shenandoah would have to beat AHSTW by 10 points or more to jump the Vikings for third.

    Treynor is the district champion.

The state playoff qualifiers will be announced late Friday after the games are complete with the Iowa High School Athletic Association releasing first round matchups for Classes 2A, 1A, A and 8-Player at 10 a.m. Saturday. First round games take place Friday, Oct. 25.

    Last week’s contests

My goodness, Clarinda, what a performance they had against Chariton in the regular season home finale Friday! The Cardinals had over 600 yards of offense and shut down one of the state’s top running backs. Clarinda looks to be rounding into form going into the end of the season.

Shenandoah took an early lead on Treynor and were right with the Cardinals into the second half before it got away. It was a similar story to their district loss to Underwood. Can the Mustangs stay with the Vikings for all four quarters, secure a playoff berth and have a chance to move up from being the four seed again?

    An impressive Homecoming

Speaking of coming on strong at the end of the season, the Sidney Cowboys look to be playing their best ball of the year. They played CAM to double overtime two weeks ago and then rolled past Stanton/Essex Friday. Now the Vikings were shorthanded, more on that shortly, but Cowboy quarterback Michael Hensley put together an impressive game, on the ground and through the air, in scoring six touchdowns, in Sidney’s win. The Cowboys have a tough task Friday at Fremont-Mills, who beat CAM last Friday to clinch the Class 8-Player District 10 championship. That district is set with Fremont-Mills, CAM and East Mills are the playoff qualifiers in that order. Sidney head coach Eli Bales told me Friday that they’ll try to get a ninth game next Friday, which is permitted for non-playoff teams.

    Youth gaining experience

The Stanton/Essex Vikings played good football at the start of the season, but the roster has kept shrinking and their scores have been less and less impressive as the season has gone on. They travel to CAM Friday. In talking with head coach Jeff Grebin after Friday’s game, I could see the frustration but at the same time he saw some wins from his guys and some improvement from his younger guys that will for sure lead to better things going forward for the Vikings. That’s a proud program that isn’t used to struggling like this, but that experience could be huge for future teams.

The Provo football team lines up for a play against Uintah in Vernal on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024.

Brian E. Preece, Special to the Herald

This past week my two side hustles intersected in Vernal, allowing me to attend the Provo vs. Uintah showdown last Thursday night.

Provo (6-2, 5-0) won easily 63-27 to clinch at least a share of the 4A Region 8 title. The Bulldogs can win the trophy outright with a win against Mountain View this Wednesday.

I grew up in Vernal moving to Salt Lake in my sixth-grade year. The current high school sits on what used to be a hay field owned by my parents. My father Dennis Preece was a teacher and very successful head wrestling coach at Uintah where he was the architect of the Uintah wrestling dynasty winning nine state titles in his 12 seasons as head coach from 1966-1977.

But during his time there, Uintah was completely futile on the gridiron and, in fact, had a losing streak that touched seven different seasons in the late 1960s through the 1970s.

My father, and his good friend Clark Jones, would often do the radio broadcasts of the games and one time Uintah was facing a third down and 49 yards to go. Jones asked my father what the Utes should do and he just quipped, “hell, they should just punt the ball now and get it over with.”

Uintah has won one state title, coming in 1994 with Curg Belcher at the helm. He was really the only coach in that school’s history that could solve the riddle, though this year with new head coach Francisco Llanos, Uintah has posted its first winning season this century with a 6-3 overall record.

Provo has had its own share of misery on the gridiron. In the span of several seasons from the late 1990s through early 2010s, Provo suffered through three winless seasons, and four others where the Bulldogs won two games or less.

In 1982, Provo won its only title in football with Frank Henderson and bringing Henderson back to coach from 1999 through 2003 did bring a semifinal run in 1999 but only modest overall success after that. For the next 10 seasons, there were glimpses of success here or there but they were fleeting, and then another winless campaign in 2013.

In 2014, the Provo administration hired Tony McGeary and the fortunes of the program took a more positive turn with winning seasons and playoff berths. Then the Provo administration made another brilliant hire bringing over Kirk Chambers from Spanish Fork, who assisted McGeary for a few years before taking the helm as head coach in 2020.

Chambers led Spanish Fork to its only appearance in a state championship game in 2012 and now has won back-to-back region titles at his alma mater. Still, deep playoff runs haven’t happened in the last ten seasons, but this 2024 Bulldog team looks to buck that trend.

The beautiful moments in high school sports: Matt Cooper arrived at Timpview High School two years ago and is a big part of the program though he is a special needs student. According to Thunderbird head coach Donny Atuaia, Matt attends all practices faithfully. And just prior to Timpview’s game with Maple Mountain, his dream of running in a touchdown came true.

Atuaia praised Kalin Hall for allowing his program to take part.

“We’ve had practices where we’ve given him the ball, but to have him do it in this setting was amazing,” Atuaia said. “I’m grateful to Coach Kalin Hall and I’m glad that we’re friends. I reached out to him to set that up and he said yes. Kalin knows Matt and knows he is a great kid.”

Kudos to both head coaches and programs for making a young man’s dream come true and reminding us that there are more important things in life than who wins on Friday night.

Orem and Springville staged a classic: Orem (8-1, 4-0) overcame a 37-24 deficit with just over six minutes remaining to down Springville (5-4, 2-3) 38-37 setting up a showdown with Timpview (5-2, 4-0) for the 5A Region 7 title.

Tiger quarterback Tayden Ka’awa found Beck Coy on a 25-yard scoring connection with 4:41 left in the final stanza and Kaue Akana split the uprights on the all-important point after to deliver the win. Akana also hit a 35-yard field goal.

Feleti Iongi had two touchdowns to help the Tiger cause while Ka’awa tossed for two touchdowns and ran for another.

Springville had its share of heroic performances including Jack Pickering’s 98-yard kickoff return that put Springville ahead by 13 points with 9:48 remaining. Pickering also caught a TD pass from Easton Leavitt and Zach Olsen ran for two touchdowns including a 35-yard romp to paydirt.

Current RPI rankings and what is at stake in Week 10: Going into the final week of the regular season there are some important things to track and some differ based on classification.

The 4A and 5A have the most schools that play football and not all their teams will make the state playoffs but rather the top 24 teams. Teams with the seeds or ratings nine through 16 will host first round games. Those teams seeded one through eight get byes in the first round and will host second round games while the top four teams (barring victory) will get to host quarterfinal contests as well.

In 6A, seeds 1-14 will get byes in the first round while seeds 15-18 will have first round games. In 2A, the top five seeds get byes and in 8-player the top seven of nine teams get first round byes.

Here are the current RPI rankings of area teams:

    • Class 6A: Lone Peak (No. 2), Skyridge (No. 3), Lehi (No. 4), American Fork (No. 12), Westlake (No. 17), Pleasant Grove (No. 18).
    • Class 5A: Orem (No. 4), Timpview (No. 5), Maple Mountain (No. 7), Springville (No. 13), Wasatch (No. 20), Cedar Valley (No. 23).
    • Class 4A: Provo (No. 2), Spanish Fork (No 4), Timpanogos (No. 11), Salem Hills (No. 14), Mountain View (No. 23), Payson (No. 25).
    • Class 2A: ALA (No. 8); 8-player: UMA-Camp Williams (No. 8).

In the last week, some teams are fighting for survival while others would like to get into that top four and assure themselves a couple of home games in the playoffs.

Statistical Superlatives: Carson Rasmussen accounted for four touchdowns (three passing, one running) as Timpview shutout Maple Mountain (7-2, 3-2), 35-0.

Porter Dinkins connected on three field goals including a 41-yarder as Salem Hills (5-4, 3-3) beat Timpanogos (6-3, 3-2), 30-14. Tate Allred had a pick six and Jedi Nelson threw two touchdown passes to further the Skyhawk cause.

Provo’s Gehrig Orchard tossed five touchdown passes and Ollie Mackay had three scores on the ground as Provo destroyed Uintah 63-27 in Vernal.

Kaden Vest romped for four touchdowns while Don quarterback McKay Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Spanish Fork (7-3, 4-1) blew past Payson (1-8, 0-5), 52-27. Trevyn Wall had four touchdown passes for the Lions in the loss.

Kepa Niumeitolu tossed three touchdown passes as Lone Peak (7-2, 3-1) slipped past Lehi (6-2, 2-2), 24-21. Legend Glasker caught two touchdown passes for the Pioneers in defeat.

Skyridge (7-2, 4-0) blasted Pleasant Grove (1-8, 0-4) 49-7 thanks to four touchdown passes by Kanael Sweetwyne. Easton Simmons also had a 70-yard pick six for the Falcons.

Lewis Knecht nailed two field goals and all four extra points, while Davis Gaisford had two touchdown passes as American Fork (4-5, 2-2) eased past Westlake (2-7, 1-3), 34-14.

Big Game of the Week No. 1: Orem will host Timpview Wednesday to decide the 5A Region 7 title. Both are undefeated in league play. Orem is fourth in the 5A RPI and Timpview is fifth. A win by the Thunderbirds might just swap their positions but both could improve their lot and maybe move into the top three with a win. Both teams have playmakers on both sides of the ball but the fans should expect a game where the winner gets at least 35 points. Common opponents suggest a Timpview victory but rivalry games always seem to defy trends.

Big Game of the Week No. 2: ALA (4-4, 1-2) is set to host Judge Memorial (2-7, 1-3) on Friday. Both are No. 8 and No. 9 in the RPI respectively. If ALA wins, perhaps it will move up into the top six or seven and get a bye in the first round of the 2A playoffs. If Judge Memorial wins, the teams likely swap spots in the RPI ratings and they will meet in a rematch hosted by Judge Memorial. A win would also give the Eagles its first winning regular season in program history.

Big Game of the Week No. 3: At No. 25 in the 4A RPI, Payson really needs to get a victory against Uintah or they will likely miss the playoffs altogether. The records indicate that Uintah should win this without much fuss but Payson has shown some offensive firepower in some of their games. And perhaps being at home playing with desperation might be the ingredients for an upset.

Extra points: UMA-Camp Williams (1-6) won its first game in program history with a 66-0 blowout victory against Monument Valley (0-5). And the 66 points the Marauders put up were the most in Week 9 across the state, while Provo’s 63 points tallied against Uintah was second most … Richfield (9-0) won again, moving its state-leading winning streak to 22 games … Roy (8-1) lost to Bountiful (8-1) so now only 4A Ridgeline, 3A teams Morgan and Richfield, along with 1A North Summit, remain undefeated, all with 9-0 marks … Seven Beehive State teams remain without a win but at least one will break through as Kearns and Cyprus will square off in a 5A Region 4 meeting between two teams with 0-9 records … For some strange reason, ALA and Layton Christian are in the same region but didn’t play each other this season … Utah County teams went 2-1 in its games outside the valley and are now 46-30 in contests in inter-county competition.

  • Fantasy football waiver wire, Week 7 picks: Players to add, top targets include Romeo Doubs, Drake Maye

Fantasy football waiver wire, Week 7 picks: Players to add, top targets include Romeo Doubs, Drake Maye

With Fantasy football injuries continuing to mount, there are some intriguing options on the Week 7 Fantasy football waiver wire. With Rachaad White (foot) out, Bucky Irving had a solid day for the Buccaneers on Sunday as expected, but he still wasn’t the most productive running back on his team. Instead Sean Tucker, a second-year pro out of Syracuse, was featured heavily for Tampa Bay, rushing 14 times for 136 yards and a score while also adding three catches for 56 yards and a second touchdown.

Tucker is available in 99% of CBS Sports Fantasy football leagues, but will he continue to produce if White returns? Before making any Week 7 Fantasy football waiver claims, be sure to see what SportsLine Fantasy football expert R.J. White has to say.

White has dominated NFL picks for years, but he got his start in sports media as a Fantasy baseball and football analyst. He finished No. 1 among all experts for his draft rankings the first year FantasyPros tracked MLB expert accuracy on their site. White has continued to excel at season-long and dynasty Fantasy baseball and football formats.

Now, he’s revealed his top waiver wire picks from among the widely available Fantasy football free agents entering Week 7. You can see his top Fantasy NFL waiver wire picks and full analysis over at SportsLine

Top Fantasy football waiver wire picks for Week 7

One player White is advising Fantasy players to target on the Week 7 waiver wire: Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs. After serving a one-game suspension, Doubs returned to catch two touchdown passes for Green Bay last week and 11.2% of his career receptions have now gone for touchdowns.

“Both Doubs (suspension) and Watson (ankle) were back in action Sunday after missing the previous week, and both caught three passes on four targets while reaching the end zone, twice in Doubs’ case,” White told SportsLine. “However, I like Doubs to have the higher floor, while Watson has the better chance at emerging as a weekly starter in Fantasy leagues if he can stay healthy.”

White is also strongly recommending Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. The No. 3 overall pick made his first career start last week and showed flashes of the incredible talent he put on display at North Carolina. He threw an absolute dime on a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kayshon Boutte at the end of the first half and that’s reason for optimism.

“The Patriots turned to Maye despite a brutal matchup and while turnovers were an issue, he did manage 243 yards and three passing touchdowns while leading the team with 38 rushing yards,” White said. “He’s a clear talent upgrade over Jacoby Brissett and could be faced with some high-volume days like Matthew Stafford as the Patriots defense looked like a shell of itself against the Texans.” See who else to target on the Fantasy football waiver wire at SportsLine

How to set your Week 7 waiver wire claims

White is also all-in on a young wide receiver who recently saw his role expanded. This player is widely available and could be a huge boost to your Fantasy football lineup. You can only see who it is at SportsLine

NFL Picks, Odds And Props For Week 6 Monday Night Football: Bills-Jets

The Monday Night Football feature is generating more watch and wager interest as the first place Buffalo Bills (3-2) tackle the New York Jets (2-3) in a key AFC East game. The Week 6 schedule was a good one for public bettors, as NFL favorites went 12-1 straight up and 10-2-1 against the spread (ATS).

Betting favorites went 11-3 SU and 10-4 ATS the prior Week 5, so the top online sportsbooks have taken a hit the past two weeks. But money has been coming in on the underdog Jets on Sunday and Monday dropping the betting line from Jets -2.5 to -1.5 and -1.

Scoring was up again Sunday, Oct. 13 following the high-scoring Thursday night win by the 49ers at Seattle, 36-24. A season-high 49.7 points per game was averaged over the 13 Week 6 contests. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers scored 51 points in smashing the Saints. The Bucs rushed for 277 yards and Baker Mayfield passed for a week-high 325 yards and 4 touchdowns to become just the fourth team in NFL history to both run and pass for at least 250 yards in a NFL game. Undrafted 2nd year RB Sean Tucker made the most of his first extended playing time for the Buccaneers rushing for a week-high 136 yards and 1 touchdown on just 14 carries.

Sharp Football Analysis provided additional advanced stats and notes on the Bills-Jets matchup with information you can bet on.

    • Buffalo has averaged 1.3 points per drive over the past two weeks (27th) after averaging a league-high 3.5 points per drive in Weeks 1-3.
    • The Jets allow 1.39 points per drive, which is 4th in the league.
    • The Jets are allowing a league-low 4.3 yards per passing play.
    • The Bills allow 5.3 yards per passing play, 6th in the league.

The Bills have been held to just 276 yards offense at 4.7 yards per play against the Texans and 236 yards at 4.1 yards per play against the Ravens in their last two games losing on the road. Last week QB Josh Allen completed just 9 pases in 30 attempts without WR Khalil Shakir (ankle), who is questionable to play Monday vs. the Jets and a game-time decision. Shakier was leading the NFL in Expected Points Added (EPA) per target ahead of Week 5 action and a very efficient top target for Allen as the slot receiver.

New York lost last Sunday in London 23-17 but held the undefeated Vikings to 253 yards at 3.8 yards per play. They also somehow lost 10-9 at home in Week 4 to the Broncos despite holding Denver’s offense to 183 yards at 3.3 yards per play. Jets QB Aaron Rodgers averaged just 3.9 yards per pass play in those two contests. The Jets 4.5 yards per play offense ranks No. 29 in the league.

The Vikings and Broncos are top-3 in the league in blitz rate. But the Bills have the second-highest standard pass rush rate. Hurting the Bills cause further is edge rusher Von Miller remains out (suspended) and interior DT Ed Oliver (hamstring) will miss another game.

Jets RB Breece Hall had a 24% target share in the first two weeks to lead all NFL running backs. The last three weeks the Jets faced three of the top six teams in blitz rate, and Hall was more involved in pass blocking. The Bills defense is surrending .44 EPA per target to NFL running backs (29th) and have struggled defending running backs out of the backfield going back to last season with top LB Matt Milano out of the lineup.

Respected sports handicapper Bob Stoll, an advanced model statistics guru at Dr. Bob Sports, provided additional stats and notes on the Bills-Jets matchup with information you can bet on.

    • Defensive coordinator and new interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich named passing coordinator and QB coach Todd Downing the new offensive coordinator in hopes to jump start the offense with more creative play calling. New York averaging just 4.5 yards per play.
    • Buffalo’s defense will likely have nickelback Taron Johnson back on the field. Backup Cam Lewis is surrendering 2.06 yards per cover snap in the slot ranking 21st out of 22 qualifying nickelbacks. Johnson allowed only 0.74 yards per cover snap in the slot last season (4th) and is a massive upgrade over Lewis.
    • The Bills are surrendering a league-high 5.2 yards per carry, but they should improve as they got back starting LB Terrel Bernard last week after he missed two games and Taron Johnson had 17 run stops last season ranked 2nd among nickelbacks.
    • Aaron Rodgers will need to get the screen game going as RB Breece Hall has a 43% receiving success rate (2nd) and Buffalo’s defense is surrendering 0.44 EPA/target to opposing running backs (29th).
    • Josh Allen has a yards per attempt versus single-high coverages only 82% of his yards per attempt against two-high and he could struggle as New York’s defense has a 52% single-high coverage rate (7th-highest).
    • Jets cornerback DJ Reed is allowing just 0.32 yards per cover snap (3rd) and he will shut down WR Keon Coleman, whose 3 deep receptions rank 11th.
    • New York’s interior pass rush is dangerous with Pro Bowl Quinnen Williams next to Javon Kinlaw, who ranks 16th in pass rushing efficiency. The duo will wreak havoc across from Buffalo center Connor McGovern, who ranks 3rd-worst in pass blocking efficiency.

This is a huge divisional game with the current standings, head-to-head play and schedules ahead. The Bills have a more favorable schedule the next month and favorites in all four games against Tennessee, at Seattle, home vs. Indianapolis before a much anticipated rematch at home vs. the Kansas City Chiefs on Nov. 17. The Jets travel to Pittsburgh and New England, home to tackle the Houston Texans and back on the road to Arizona and home vs. Indianapolis. Both the Bills and Jets have a bye in Week 12.
