FARGO — The FBS Mountain West Conference is reported to be considering North Dakota State as a football-only member.
The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, a national college reporter, posted on the social media platform X on Wednesday morning that Northern Illinois, a school the Mountain West was pursuing, will likely stay in the Mid-American Conference and so the league is turning its attention to NDSU.
“Northern Illinois’ interest in Mountain West as football-only member ‘waning’ so MW now considering FCS power North Dakota State , sources told @ActionNetworkHQ,” McMurphy wrote. “If NIU stays in MAC, MW (w/8 football members) still seeking 9th football team, source said.”
NDSU athletic director Matt Larsen did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
College conference realignment has gutted the Mountain West, with several of its top members moving to the Pac-12 as traditional norms have been uprooted by schools moving to different leagues in pursuit of television rights money. The league has been looking to add schools to fill its openings.
NDSU is a member of the Football Championship Subdivision Missouri Valley Football Conference, its home since 2008. The school moved from NCAA Division II to Division I in 2004, playing in the Great West Football Conference before joining the MVFC. Most of its non-football sports are members of the Summit League, while wrestling is a member of the Big 12.
If NDSU was invited to join the Mountain West as a football-only member, and accepted, it’s not believed the cost of making the jump to the more expensive Football Bowl Subdivision would be prohibitive.
Current Mountain West football members include Colorado State, Nevada-Las Vegas, San Diego State, San Jose State, Fresno State, Hawaii, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah State, Nevada and Air Force.
Colorado State, San Diego State, Fresno State and Utah State are leaving for the Pac-12. Texas-El Paso has since agreed to become a Mountain West member, bumping football-playing schools to eight. The league wants to get to at least nine members to play an eight-game conference schedule.

BILLINGS — A triple dose of first-round action in the Class AA state soccer playoffs hit Amend Park on Tuesday, and the occasion did not disappoint.
In the first of two crosstown games at the main turf facility in the park, Billings Skyview’s girls moved on to the quarterfinals following two extra-time periods and a penalty shootout against Billings Senior. The Falcons advance to play the Western AA’s top seed, Missoula Sentinel, on the road at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Billings West’s boys, meanwhile, avoided any late drama in the nightcap against Skyview and got the job done in regulation, earning the Golden Bears and reigning Class AA runner-up a date with second-seeded Helena Capital at 2 p.m. Saturday at Helena’s Northwest Park.
West’s girls played Great Falls CMR simultaneously to Skyview-Senior on an adjacent grass field at Amend and walloped the Rustlers by a seven-goal margin. They’ll also be on the road for their quarterfinal match, facing Missoula Hellgate at 5 p.m. Friday at Fort Missoula Regional Park.

Tenley Leffler wasn’t going to be denied.
The Falcons’ goalkeeper, even as she was peppered with shots by the Broncs’ attack for 100 minutes of play, let in an equalizer in regulation and missed the opening kick of the penalty shootout, had no plans to let Skyview’s season end on her watch.
The junior only let in one of the Broncs’ final four penalties taken (including a big save on Senior’s third kick-taker) as the Falcons in return converted three of their final four spot kicks, with a Senior miss on the final attempt sealing fifth-seeded Skyview’s ticket to the next round of postseason play this weekend.
It was a full-circle moment for Skyview, which was eliminated in the first round of last year’s playoffs on the same Amend Park turf by a different crosstown opponent, West. But instead of heartbreak, only joy was on the Falcons’ faces this time around.

“Tenley’s been huge,” Skyview coach Melissa Dugger said. “She’s just been locked in. … I’m so proud of them, from the beginning of the season, they just bought into me, had trust in me, and I’m happy that I got to see them hold off all 80 minutes, fight until the end, get that overtime and then keep their composure and get the win.”
A scoreless first half opened up quickly after halftime when Skyview’s Rae Smart scored directly off of a corner kick, giving the Falcons the breakthrough. But Senior pushed hard to make it level, and the Broncs got the tying goal they wanted when Meadow Mahlmeister — a Lockwood transfer who had a head-spinning 31 goals and 10 assists with the Lions last year — ripped a shot from outside the 18-yard box that was near-impossible for Leffler to stop.
As the stands gradually filled with visitors from the then-concluded West-CMR game nearby, the tension ramped up with it, though neither team managed to find a winner through the two extra periods. But with all eyes watching and little room for error in the shootout, Skyview’s calm and collected showing made for a loud statement victory.
“You’ve got to stay locked in, and that’s what they did,” Dugger said. “And when you do those things and you keep your composure, you come out on top.”
West 3, Skyview 0
Luke Ashmore made keeping good defensive shape a priority Tuesday, since the West coach knows what can happen to the Golden Bears if they get burned.
Case in point: Skyview won its last meeting against West seven days prior by a 1-0 margin, as the Falcons got in behind the Bears’ back line and converted a chance — the only chance they needed as West was shut out.
Whatever Ashmore has drilled in tactically to West over the past week, it worked wonders Tuesday.
Though it took awhile before the Bears totally got into a groove with a commanding lead, third-seeded West played largely mistake-free soccer and didn’t let the Falcons pick up a second win over it in what would’ve been the worst timing possible.

“One of the biggest things going into this game (was) just making sure defensively, there were no errors,” Ashmore said. “We always have to be solid back there. And so to have that shutout, I know it’s going to bode well for our center backs’ confidence, too.”
Of course, it helps when your defenders get involved in the scoring, too.
With West dominant in possession in the first half, back-liner Colt Gust got a goal that had been coming by heading in a corner kick with 7:58 left before the intermission, settling the Bears’ nerves and giving them a halftime lead.
West was in clear control of the game’s flow the rest of the way, but Skyview was still in arm’s reach — until, in a flash, it wasn’t. Bears left winger Ryan Gott was the super substitute as his performance garnered a shoutout from Ashmore, assisting Kyler Fix’s goal with 10:13 left to make it two and creating the chance that led to a Skyview own goal less than a minute later to make it three.
“I was happy because we stayed patient,” Ashmore said. “We moved the ball well, we knew those chances were going to come, and I’m really happy the boys found them even in the dying moments of the game. They still wanted to go forward and find that chance.”
West 8, CMR 1
Particularly after his team started October with three draws and a loss in its first four games of the month, West coach Rob Zimmerman wondered if he was ever going to see the Golden Bears hit another gear.
Outscoring their last two opponents 18-1 makes it certainly look like West has found a new level to its game.
Five different players scored as the Bears roared past the Rustlers in a match that had much less drama (but plenty more scoring) than the crosstown match going on at the same time feet away, with West making quick work of CMR by putting five goals away by halftime.

“We struggle at the opening whistle a little bit, getting into a game right away, and we talked about it today and we’ve been talking about it for awhile,” Zimmerman said. “A point of emphasis today was to get a good early start and get after it right away and try to put the pressure on them as much as they can.”
Adison Aspinwall, Adriana Davey and Kaitlyn Cross all had braces while Reese Jeffers and Grace Curnow rounded out West’s scoresheet, helping it emphatically follow up its 10-0 victory over Belgrade in its regular-season finale last week. Brooke Krum scored CMR’s only goal as the Rustlers’ season ended with a 2-11-2 record.

The Chargers have won four straight games, the latest a 34-7 victory over Bureau Valley on Senior Night.
Illini West won the toss and deferred to the second half. Bureau Valley started its first drive at its 35-yard line. They held the football for three minutes before turning it over on downs after a Brady Hartz three-yard reception kept them seven yards short of the first down after a 10-play, 54-yard drive at the eight-yard line of the Chargers.
The Chargers threw incomplete on first down. Ethan Carlisle had a four-yard run on second down. Tre Neiderman caught a Carlisle pass for a 15-yard gain and the first down. Nick Johnson was stopped for two-yard and three-yard losses on consecutive plays. Carlisle lost six yards on the next play and the Chargers were forced to punt it back to Bureau Valley.
The Storm’s next drive started at their own 44-yard line. Elijah Endress had a seven-yard carry on first down. The drive ended as Helms tired to fake the handoff and fumbled the football and it was recovered by Issac Jones of the Chargers at the 35-yard line.
Carlisle was dropped for a seven-yard loss by Endress on a keeper on first down. He lost four more yards on the next carry. Max Kinnamon was thrown for an eight-yard loss. Kinnamon punted it away on fourth down. The Storm went three-and-out punted back to the Chargers.
Johnson ran for 12 yards to end the scoreless opening quarter. Carlisle had a three-yard gain to open the second period. Neiderman caught consecutive passes of 12 and 13 yards. Carlisle was incomplete on first down. He connected with Kinnamon at the 30-yard line and Kinnamon ran it in from there to put the Chargers up 6-0 on a 48-yard pass play. Neiderman caught a pass for the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead with 9:56 to play in the half.
The Storm’s next drive featured a Helms 36-yard run. Four plays later, Endress was stopped at the line of scrimmage by a herd of Chargers on fourth down to turn the football back over to the Chargers at their own 22-yard line.
Carlisle had positive gains of seven, two and four yards to pick up the first down. Johnson ran to the right and broke an Endress tackle near the line of scrimmage and then raced 66 yards for the touchdown to put the Chargers up 14-0 after the two-point conversion failed with 4:48 to play in the half.
The Storm had another three-and-out and punted it back to the Chargers.
Carlisle threw incomplete on first down. He ran for 36 and two yards on consecutive plays. Johnson added a four-yard carry. Carlisle ripped off a six-yard gain to pick up the first down. Kinnamon was dropped for a six-yard loss after taking a double handoff. Carlisle threw back-to-back incompletions to set up a fourth and 14 at the 14-yard line. Carlisle rounded right and threw back across his body to the left and found a wide open Kinnamon who ran into the end zone from 14 yards out to make the score 20-0. The conversion failed.
Bureau Valley was called for illegal procedure and Endress had a two-yard run to end the half with the Chargers leading 20-0.
The Chargers took the second-half kickoff and Neiderman caught a pass from Carlisle for five yards. Johnson tried to turn the corner on the right side and was dropped for a two-yard loss by Tyce Barkman. A Carlisle pass intended for Johnson was picked off by Blake Foster of the Storm.
The Storm had the football for eight plays before turning it over on downs to the Chargers. The Chargers took over at the Storm 45-yard line. Johnson ran for seven yards. Back-to-back penalties on the Chargers for a false start and holding made it second and 17. Carlisle threw two straight incompletions and Kinnamon punted it back to the Storm.
The Next Storm drive featured a Foster 13-yard reception and on the next play a Helms 20-yard run. But the Chargers defense held strong as Khile Stonger broke up a pass on fourth down to keep the Storm scoreless.
Starting at their own six-yard line, the Chargers got two yards from Carlisle. Bureau Valley was offsides making it second and three. Johnson was stopped in his tracks for no gain and Carlisle was incomplete to set up a fourth and three from the 13-yard line. The Storm’s Bracin Patnoe was called for roughing the kicker to keep the football with the Chargers. Johnson had a two-yard run. Sparks caught a three-yard pass and that play ended the third quarter. Johnson broke off a 78-yard run and was caught from behind by Hartz at the three-yard line. Carlisle pitched to Johnson and he ran it in from three yards out. Trish Mokosch kicked the extra point for a 27-0 score.
The Storm went three-and-out, punting the football back to the Chargers. The next Chargers drive started at the Storm 37-yard line. Johnson had back-to-back three-yard runs. Carlisle followed with a six-yard carry. Johnson went for 12 yards and then lost four yards on the next play. Johnson had a six-yard carry and Neiderman with a run of four off the pitch to set up fourth and five. Sparks out-jumped Hartz for a pass and came down in the end zone for the touchdown. Mokosch added the successful extra point for a 34-0 lead.
The Storm got a run of 19 yards from Helms on first down. Five plays later, Helms found Foster in the right corner of the end zone for a touchdown and Barkman added the extra point for the final score of 34-7.
“There were a lot of doubters when we were 0-3. They have dug themselves out of a huge hole and have put themselves in the position to make the playoffs,” Illini West Head Coach Jacob Calvin said after the game. “It was a great team win and even more special for the seniors who were playing their last regular season game at home.
“I coached these seniors at the JV (junior varsity) level and I am happy for them,” he added. “Our defense executed the way we knew they could. Nick (Johnson) getting his carries and running the football well has helped the passing game. And the offensive line continues to gel.”
Stats: Nick Johnson carried the football 16 times for 150 yards two touchdowns. Carlisle ran for 55 yards on 13 attempts. Carlisle was 8-15 for 118 yards and three touchdowns. Kinnamon had two catches for 62 yards and touchdowns of 48 and 14 yards. Sparks caught three passes for 16 yards and a touchdown.

WILLMAR — Finley Donelan and Luke McCleary are never too far from each other on the football field.
The senior duo are mainstays in the trenches for the Willmar football team. Both are defensive tackles for the Cardinals’ defense.
“I feel like he’s a tank and I’m a bit more mobile,” McCleary said with a grin towards Donelan. McCleary measures in at 5-foot-10 and 225 pounds. Donelan is 6-5 and 235 pounds.
“We’re both able to take on the blocks,” Donelan added. “Especially in the pass game, having more of a bull rush-type guy and then more of a speed rush-type guy, we compliment each other very well.”
As of two weeks ago, McCleary and Donelan are now paired together on the offensive line. Donelan is at left tackle and has been playing both sides of the ball for the bulk of the season. McCleary has recently made the jump to left guard as Willmar shifted to an all-senior offensive line. They’re joined by Danny Martinez at center, Gustavo Blue Arce at right guard and Tristan Boehme at right tackle.
Last week, the all-senior line helped the Cardinals to 305 yards of total offense in a 21-14 win over Chisago Lakes. It was Willmar’s first victory of the season.
Now, the Cardinals hope to carry that momentum on a short week against second-ranked Totino-Grace at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hodapp Field. It is the sixth top-10 opponent the Cardinals have faced this season.
“I’m a little nervous but I know everyone’s really confident coming off the win so I feel like we have a better foundation going into this week,” McCleary said.
Donelan has been a three-year starter on the line for Willmar. Having an elder statesman on the line has been a valuable resource as the Cardinals tried to find the right line combination.
“He’s been through the highs and lows and knows how to balance those things out,” Willmar head coach Jon Konold said of Donelan. “Finley’s a smart player. He’s able to not practice as much on offense or defense and still knows what he’s supposed to do. He’s been giving a great effort all season long and it’s been seen in the improvement of the team these last few weeks.”
Moving McCleary to offense wasn’t the plan. He focused his off-season workouts towards being a D-lineman. He also had limited experience at the varsity level after his junior season was derailed by injuries. He hurt his right knee. That was followed by a back injury while doing squats in a weightlifting session.
“It was a pretty lofty amount,” McCleary said about how much he was lifting during the injury. He says his max today is “around 500” pounds.
Making both Donelan and McCleary was a move out of necessity. To help with that, senior Jake Huisinga and junior Cameren Champagne have been in the defensive tackle rotation.
“You have to be mentally and physically strong,” Konold said of playing both ways on the line. “And you have to be prepared because it takes a little extra film work.”
Willmar senior Finley Donelan, right, reaches out towards Benilde-St. Margaret’s Christian Johnson, 2, during a Week 1 game on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024 at Hodapp Field in Willmar

On every offensive play, Donelan is there to lend a helping hand to McCleary, whether that’s with a double-team block or help knowing the plays.
“Without him, I wouldn’t have been able to know half the plays,” McCleary said. “He talks to me the whole game, which is really nice.”
Donelan pushed through McCleary’s self-deprecating humor and credited his teammate for being a quick learner.
“I can tell him a little adjustment to make to help out Danny or help out me and he goes out there and gives it 100% every time and tries to throw that adjustment in as quickly as possible,” Donelan said. “It’s been really nice to have someone that learns quickly, really wants to be out there, plays hard and gives it their all.”
Facing a top team in Class AAAA is a tall order in the regular-season finale. The hope for Donelan and McCleary is to keep the positive momentum going into the postseason next week.
“Everyone’s 0-0 going into the playoffs,” Donelan said. “You can look at regular-season records all you want but everyone’s got the same advantage going into the playoffs. For us to have the past two games that we’ve had in the run game and the O-line, it’s really exciting to see.”
