    Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams recently held an online session with students from the Sunita Williams Elementary School in her hometown of Needham, Massachusetts, US.     Sunita Williams said that in space, any kind of fluid doesn’t behave the same way as it does on Earth, and then went on to highlight the challenge of keeping beverages under control in microgravity. Without the forces of gravity, liquids don’t fall into a cup but rather drift in all directions – a potential mess that can be both inconvenient and hazardous in a confined space.
    According to Sunita Williams, to avoid this mess, astronauts utilise a specialised pouch that stops liquids from floating away. She then went on to show how astronauts consume fluids from these pouches, which have one-way valves and straws integrated into them. “It was quite a unique challenge for me,” Williams said as she showed how it’s done.

    This interactive session was much more than just learning how to drink in space. Students engaged eagerly, asking questions and soaking up knowledge about life aboard the ISS, where space food and hydration practices are anything but ordinary. For these young learners, seeing an astronaut’s daily routine – including the clever ways they consume liquids – was a window into a world where culinary ingenuity meets space-age necessity.

    The 41-year-old visited the University of Virginia to cheer up for the women’s basketball team.     In a video that surfaced on Instagram, Ohanian can be seen addressing some female basketball players. Their foundation starts here. It’s just so compelling and I see it out there. It’s gonna be a lot of fun to watch this program.” But what caught the attention was his remarkable admiration for female athletes and his desire to bring about a change.

    Speaking further to the athletes, Ohanian said, “I will keep doing the work on the court and off the court, will take care of the rest. This is the era of excellence of women in sports. So no matter how you are thinking like ‘how, well, should I do it now,’ like You all DESERVE EVERY BIT OF THIS!” Continuing further, he also motivated them to understand their worth. “There is a new bar, there is a new standard Accept nothing less.” Ohanian has continued to take several measures to promote women’s sports and one such example was his initiative in the form of Athlos NYC.

     

    For the unversed, the event was a novel, women-only track and field event through which Ohanian desires to bring a positive change in the lives of female athletes. He announced the beginning of the initiative in April this year and highlighted that his venture Seven Seven Six would invest directly in the event. Athletes from the United States and abroad competed for a total purse of at least $500,000 in the event, with the winner securing $60,000. Besides, Ohanian also invests in Angel City FC, a women’s soccer team based in New York. Remember, the businessman has continued to highlight the underinvestment that has been in place when it comes to women’s sports. 

    “The silver lining of women’s sports being so underinvested was that they were so easy to invest in. You can try anything you want,” he said in an interview with ADWEEK in September this year. And interestingly, Ohanian’s biggest motivation behind investing in women’s sports is his wife, Serena Williams.

    Alexis Ohanian looks up to his wife as much as the world does. He has often highlighted the positive influence the tennis great had on him and has reflected on how his life changed after meeting the 23-time Grand Slam champion. One of the many positive influences, according to Ohanian, is the awareness he started to develop about women’s sports after meeting with Williams. 

    Ohanian attended Squawk Box’s discussion on CNBC in July this year and deliberated on the rise of women’s sports. Speaking in the interview, he credited his wife for the successful initiatives he took and lauded the star player. “The core phenomenon here probably came from a certain someone I’m married to, right? Serena Williams is the prototype for how you can show women’s sports is and can be and should be on the same level as men’s,” he said. Continuing further, he revealed how his views changed after meeting Williams.

    “To be clear, I jumped on this bandwagon really when I met my wife. That was the first time I really watched tennis as a sport.     When Vanessa Williams was crowned Miss America, her life instantly changed.

    Not only did the win bring her new responsibilities within the pageant world, but she also made history becoming the first Black woman to earn the special title.

    “I had the responsibility of something that I never thought would ever happen in my lifetime,” she told Yahoo Entertainment in 2021. “I didn’t think it would happen, and the fact that it did happen, made my path mean something and that’s tremendously heartfelt to me because I made a change in my own little way.”

    While the road ahead for Williams would lead to a successful career in Hollywood with countless acting, modeling, singing and producing gigs, her year-long stint as Miss America was no easy feat.

    More than 40 years after Williams changed the world of beauty pageants, take a look back on her historic win and the drama that soon followed:

    In a live telecast from Atlantic City, New Jersey, host Gary Collins had the honor of announcing the winner of Miss America 1984.

    Beginning with the fourth runner-up, Collins began congratulating the finalists and presenting them with scholarships of various monetary value.

    The final two contestants came down to Miss New Jersey Suzette Charles and Williams. After winning the talent portion with a vocal performance of “Happy Days Are Here Again” as well as the lifestyle and fitness portion of the show, Williams was crowned the winner.

    “I didn’t know what was the next step,” Williams told Entertainment Tonight in 2021. “It was a tremendous history-making moment for me at 20 years old.”

    Why It Was a Big Deal:

    According to PBS, the Miss America rule book stated in the 1930s that “contestants must be of good health and of the white race.”

    Following the advances of the civil rights movement, Black Americans began setting up their own contests. The 1968 Miss Black America Contest, held in Atlantic City on the same day as the Miss America Pageant, was organized as a direct protest of the pageant. Miss America organizers were confronted with its shortcomings and began making changes.

    In 1970, a Black woman named Cheryl Brown won Miss Iowa and made it to Miss America as a contestant. But to many, Williams’ win in 1984 was a pinnacle accomplishment for the pageant community.

    While Williams’ win was initially met with applause from the crowd, she won’t forget the criticism she faced from some critics. “I was seen as a symbol, but also seen as a Black woman and also seen as someone who was supposed to represent the American beauty,” Williams recalled on a February 2021 episode of A&E’s “The Table Is Ours” podcast. “There are a lot of folks that did not believe that having brown skin and being a Black woman represented the Miss America ideal. … Not only was I getting attacked from white folks saying she doesn’t represent us, but some Black folks [said], ‘Oh they only picked her cause she’s [light-skinned with] light eyes.’ They kind of dismissed my talent, my intellect, and my achievement. So that was probably more hurtful.”

    Things became even more complicated for Williams when she found herself embroiled in a scandal months before her reign was supposed to come to an end.

    What Happened Next:

    In 1984, nude photos of Williams were published in a magazine called Penthouse. According to the actress, she had posed for the pictures before her pageant days when she worked for a photographer. Williams also assured fans that she never gave her consent for the publication to print them.

    Ultimately, Williams was forced to resign from her Miss America title with six weeks left of her reign. “I had no idea that this had been going on beyond my back since the very beginning to make money,” she previously told Yahoo. “I felt extremely betrayed, and of course, stunned and humiliated.”

    The Miss America Organization later apologized to Williams for how she was treated.

    “You have lived your life in grace and dignity, and never was it more evident than during the events of 1984 when you resigned,” Miss America CEO Sam Haskell said during the Miss America 2016 telecast. “Though none of us currently in the organization were involved then, on behalf of today’s organization, I want to apologize to you and to your mother, Ms. Helen Williams. I want to apologize for anything that was said or done that made you feel any less the Miss America you are and the Miss America you always will be.”

    To this day, Williams continues to be a champion of change by becoming a founding member of Black Theater United, a coalition empowering Black artists in the theater industry.

    She also remains grateful for the opportunities Miss America brought into her life.

    “The legacy of that moment in 1983 was that, yes, you can be smart enough, talented enough and be able to represent the American world,” Williams told Entertainment Tonight in 2021. “And as a result, I have been able to have wonderful opportunities to delve into my history and my family.”

    Pharrell as a Lego and Robbie Williams as a chimp? Music biopics get creative

    TORONTO — Many of the expected conventions of music biopics are present in “Piece by Piece,” about the producer-turned-pop star Pharrell Williams, and “Better Man,” about the British singer Robbie Williams. There’s the young artist’s urge to break through, fallow creative periods and regrettable chapters of fame-addled excess.

    But there are a few, little differences. In “Piece by Piece,” Pharrell is a Lego. And in “Better Man,” Williams is played by a CGI monkey.

    If the music biopic can sometimes feel a little stale in format, these two movies, both premiering this week at the Toronto International Film Festival, attempt novel remixes. In each film, each Williams recounts his life story as a narrator. But their on-screen selves aren’t movie stars who studied to get a part just right, but computer-generated animations living out real superstar fantasies.

    While neither Williams has much in common as a musician, neither has had a very traditional career. Their films became reflections of their individuality, and, maybe, a way to distinguish themselves in the crowded field of music biopics like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Rocketman.”

    “This is about being who you are, even if it’s not something that can be put in a box,” Pharrell said in an interview Tuesday alongside director Morgan Neville.

    Also next to Pharrell: A two-foot-tall Lego sculpture of himself, which was later in the day brought to the film’s premiere and given its own seat in the crowd.

    The experience watching the crowd-pleasing “Piece by Piece,” which Focus Features will release Oct. 11, can be pleasantly discombobulating. A wide spectrum of things you never expected to see in Lego form are animated. Virginia Beach (where Pharrell grew up). An album of Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life.” Jay-Z.

    “I’m just so grateful that everybody said yes,” says Pharrell. “Morgan said yes. Lego said yes. Focus said yes. Universal said yes. When you get to all those yeses, you realize how impossible this is.”

    Neville, the filmmaker of “20 Feet From Stardom,” “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” and the recent Steve Martin doc, made “Piece by Piece” like a documentary. When he interviewed people for the film — everyone from Missy Elliott to Kendrick Lamar — he spoke to them by Zoom and told them they’d be animated. But he didn’t share how.

    Pharrell as a Lego is surprisingly winning. It’s a way to represent Pharrell as, at heart, a playful builder of beats, a man hellbent on fame who assembled his own destiny.

    “I felt like everything we were doing in the film was totally reflective of the subject of the film,” Neville says. “We’re not doing Lego because it’s a gimmick. We’re doing it because it’s the only way to tell this story right.”

    “Piece by Piece” will be the unusual film to potentially vie in both the best documentary and best animated film categories at the Academy Awards, along with the best song category. (Pharrell made several originals for it.)

    The high concept of “Better Man” began with a query by filmmaker Michael Gracey, who directed the hit musical “The Greatest Showman.” He approached Williams, the bad-boy balladeer, with a question.

    “I said: ‘What animal do you see yourself as?’” Gracey told the crowd, introducing “Better Man” at the film’s Monday premiere. “And with a big grin he said, ‘Lion.’”

    After a moment, Williams reflected and acknowledged the truer answer — for an entertainer who started out in boy band Take That — was a monkey.

    In the film, the actor playing Williams is Jonno Davies — only we don’t see him, either. Not unlike the process on the “Planet of the Apes” films, Davies performed in a motion-capture suit. Later, digital effects teams placed the chimpanzee of the film on top of him. One part is Williams himself: the eyes of the monkey’s face. Every other character, meanwhile, is human.

    While “Piece by Piece” is a more all-ages release, “Better Man” is R-rated and doesn’t skimp on the rock ‘n’ roll debauchery. It’s the most cocaine you’ve ever seen a chimp ingest.

    It also makes for a peculiar viewing experience. Is Williams a more sympathetic figure as a wounded animal than he is as a human? Either way, Williams is delighted by the result.

    “For a narcissist, it’s a wonderful treat,” he beamed at the screening. “I’ve seen it three times. It’s not enough.”

    In recent years, Packer has said he is now the ‘happiest’ he’s been, after shedding 25kg in 75 days and ditching the seven mood-altering drugs he was taking to help with his mental health. 

    ‘I’m roughly 130kg now and want to be back to 100kg by the end of 2022. I want to swim with my kids at Bondi when we’re all in Sydney together next year and be 100kg,’ he told The Weekend Australian from his home in in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico at the time. 

    The businessman said he quit the antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs he was prescribed in March, and is now looking to ‘rehabilitate’ his reputation in Australia.

    The book also outlines some of the darkest moments of his life and how he went from inheriting a fortune to battling anxiety and depression; three times, he has come back from nervous breakdowns.

    There were multiple contributing factors that combined to his downward spiral. 

    Scandals marred his jet-set lifestyle, from a deal that saw him under scrutiny based on his political ties in Israel to a legal quagmire in China when officials from Crown Resorts, where he served as director, were detained in relation to illegal gambling charges.

    Even his Tinseltown dreams were tainted – with the $100 million collapse of his production company RatPac with Hollywood producer Brett Ratner.

    In the midst of his despair, Packer reveals he turned to old friend Warren Beatty, and spent years living in the Hollywood star’s guest house, eventually calling him ‘Dad’ – though he’s keen to point out that means no disrespect to his later father, Kerry, who engineered so much of the family’s runaway business success.

    Packer counts numerous household names among his friends – from Robert de Niro to Leonardo DiCaprio – and since his youth was firmly entrenched in the celebrity set, even flirting with Scientology for a time before distancing himself from the church, in the vein of so many box-office actors and actresses.

    The book describes Packer’s personal torment, drink and mental issues, which the billionaire describes as ‘very scary.’ 

    He says he came to the realization his problems were only ‘getting worse’ – causing him to be ‘desperately worried,’ according to the extract in The Australian.

    Beatty is notorious for avoiding media interviews but he chose to sit down and talk about Packer for the book, a sign of how much he values and cares for the man. 

    The actor would be the one who helped Packer finally seek help, referring him to a top psychiatrist who immediately asked him: ‘Are you trying to kill yourself?’

    ‘I don’t know if I started crying, but I thought to myself, “I don’t want to have $1.4 billion of debt any more. Why am I doing this?”‘ Packer said at the time. 

    The father-of-three said he is now excited to begin his ‘third act’ and plans to ease back into public life in Australia.
