  • West Florida golfer Abby Vernier wins Athlete of the Week award

This isn’t the first time Abby Vernier has earned an award from the Pensacola News Journal this week.

But this award is definitely minimal compared to her accomplishment earlier this week.

After a third-place finish at the Class 2A state golf tournament in Howey-in-the-Hills, Vernier cemented herself as one of the area’s top high school golfers. She carded a two-day total of 148, bouncing back on the second day with a one-over par 72.

For her efforts, Vernier was named the PNJ Athlete of the Week after mustering 43.91% of the poll’s votes.

On Friday, Vernier was announced as the PNJ Girls Golfer of the Year. Safe to say she had a solid junior season with West Florida, which, as a team, made it to the region tournament for the first time in program history.

  • Maidenhead’s Ruth wins World Masters Hockey gold with England – Photo 1 of 1

Maidenhead’s Ruth wins World Masters Hockey gold with England – Photo 1 of 1

Maidenhead Hockey Club is celebrating the success of its head of ladies’ hockey, Ruth Young, after she won a gold medal with the England Masters team at the World Masters Hockey Championships in New Zealand this weekend.

The club’s director of hockey, David Joshua said he can’t wait to speak with Ruth about the team’s success, adding that Masters Hockey shows that the sport has ‘no age limit’.

Ruth was selected for the over 65s Women’s England Masters team which travelled to Auckland for the championships this month. She helped her team through to the final where they proved too strong for Wales this weekend, winning 7-0.

Masters Hockey provides a great platform for more senior players to continue playing the sport at a competitive level, both nationally and internationally.

England dominated the various age group categories in New Zealand, also winning in the men’s and women’s over 55s category and the men’s over 60s category.

David Joshua, Director of Hockey at Maidenhead Hockey Club, said: “A huge congratulations to our Head of Ladies, Ruth Young for picking up another gold medal as an England Hockey Masters Player.

“It was a fantastic result, and we look forward to hearing more about it when she returns to Maidenhead HC. As well as being a superb player, Ruth shows a real passion for the game. The over 65s Championship provides a great example of how sport has no age limit!”

Maidenhead’s first team picked up a hugely encouraging 6-0 home win over Oxford 2nds on Saturday.

Maids had managed just one win from the opening seven South Central Men’s Division 1 North matches this season. But they found some form and confidence to sweep past an Oxford team who remain above them in the table.

The win lifts them to within a point of ninth placed Oxford heading into Saturday’s game at Yateley. Victory for Maids would lift them above their hosts on goal difference.

In the South Central Women’s Premier Division 1, Maidenhead’s women’s team were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Salisbury this Saturday.

Maids are yet to win this season; however, they’ll see this as a positive result and one they can build on as they look to climb the table.

They sit second bottom on just two points from eight matches heading into Saturday’s game at seventh placed Amersham & Chalfont 1sts.

Maidenhead Hockey Club is a family friendly club. It is actively seeking new members in both its adult and colt (junior) divisions – from novices through to seasoned players.

SAS: Who Dares Wins star Ant Middleton has been dealt a ‘major blow’ after receiving bad news about a spin-off of the Channel 4 series.

The military training programme, which started back in 2015, sees ordinary people and celebrities facing tough endurance tasks to prove their mettle to Ant and the show’s other chief instructors.

Ant was involved with the Channel 4 show between 2015 and 2021 but hasn’t appeared since then, instead focusing on the spin-off SAS Australia.

SAS Australia started in 2020 and looked set to continue with a fifth season in 2025, with Ant promising that the series ‘will be coming back’ amid rumours of casting calls.

However, sources have claimed that the fifth season may never reach TV after discussions and negotiations between Screentime and Channel Seven in Australia apparently broke down.

It’s reportedly come as a surprise that no filming will have been completed for season five before the end of 2024, and the show was apparently absent from Channel Seven’s 2025 line-up announcement.

The future of SAS Australia is apparently up in the air (Picture: Samir Hussein/WireImage)

Its rumoured cancellation has come as a surprise after 1.85 million people tuned in to watch the 2023 finale (equivalent to almost five million viewers in the UK).

According to MailOnline, insiders have indicated that the show’s future may lie elsewhere, with Australia’s Channel Nine apparently showing interest.

But negotiations and interest offer no guarantees, and production on a fifth season apparently fizzling out behind the scenes is a major blow to SAS Australia’s future.

And it appears to go against all indications that Ant gave about the series earlier this year, when it seemed certain a fifth season would be greelint.

He told Yahoo Lifestyle back in August: ‘Of course we’re coming back, SAS Australia’s gone nowhere. You’ve heard it from the horse’s mouth.

‘We just need to make sure we’ve got the right cast, that we’ve got the right location, and with SAS Australia you can’t rush it.’

He continued: ‘You can’t just go, “Right, we need to do it every year” because it’s about getting things right, it’s about keeping it authentic and keeping it real and keeping it raw.

‘We need the right cast, we need the right location, and we need the right production company on board.’

Ant had previously told The Express that a fifth season of SAS Australia was very much in his plans, with his personal search for a new cast apparently under way.

‘I’ve already got a few names in mind. [Actor] James Stewart, or [singer] Samantha Jade – she’s like a little pocket rocket. I can just picture her going full throttle.’

A seventh series of the original British version of the show has been commissioned by Channel 4, with filming already having taken place in Wales over the summer of 2024.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Ant Middleton for comment.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.

That will be a District 5A-10 game. Against Gateway on Friday, the Seahawks defense pitched a shutout. The Eagles’ only score came on a scoop-and-score return of a Cape fumble. For the Seahawks, Almarian Thomas caught a touchdown pass from Derrick Hooker, and returned a punt 57 yards for a score. Jermaine Skinner had a 12-yard TD run, and Caleb Cobb ran for 38 yards for a touchdown. Cape, leading District 5A-10 with a 2-0 mark, will seek to finish unbeaten in the district in Thursday’s rivalry game with Ida Baker. The Seahawks already have the district title sewed up thanks to beating second-place Charlotte earlier this season.

Island Coast 34, Ida Baker 20: The Crosstown Showdown went to the Gators (4-6) as Ida Baker fell to 0-10 with the Cape Coral game remaining. Elias Vargas rushed for 126 yards and two Bulldogs touchdowns.
