Defending the Western lifestyle with an eclectic project mix | Nation & World

When rural folks don’t know where else to turn for solace, the Western Justice nonprofit wants to be their lifeline of last resort.

The organization was founded four years ago with the goal of assisting farmers, ranchers, cowboys and others who face tough predicaments but feel like they’re out of options.

    Dave Duquette

Dave Duquette grew up in Western Washington logging towns before joining the U.S. Marine Corps and traveling the Far East. Upon his return, Duquette built a successful skylight installation business, became a horse trainer and began political advocacy work. He’s now the executive director of the Western Justice nonprofit and foundation.

  • It’s Labubu’s world and we’re living in it: What’s this Pop Mart figure and why is everyone obsessed with it?, Lifestyle News

It’s Labubu’s world and we’re living in it: What’s this Pop Mart figure and why is everyone obsessed with it?, Lifestyle News

It’s hanging off bags as keychains and people are displaying figurines of it in their homes.

Even some of our politicians are joining in on the hype by dressing it up in its own little white uniform.

But what exactly is Labubu and why is everyone so obsessed with it?

The devilish creature is part of Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung’s story series, The Monsters, which he created back in 2015.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BwIsiSqHXKo/?hl=en

In the Nordic fairy tale, there are both good and evil monsters and other characters include Zimomo, Tycoco, Spooky and Pato.

While Labubu’s serrated teeth and sneaky grin give off a mischievous first impression, the character is actually a kind-hearted one who always wants to help others while accidentally doing bad things.

The character also hopes to inspire others to be more positive.

“No matter what difficulties we encounter, we should grin like Labubu and naturally, we will become happy,” a publicity copy reads.

In 2019, blind box brand Pop Mart entered an exclusive license agreement with Kasing and the revenue generated from the first series broke the sales record in the art toy category.

Celebrities love it, and so do politicians

While Labubu has been a well-loved character for years, its popularity boomed when Blackpink member Lisa posted an Instagram Story of herself earlier in April holding a giant plushie of it.

Netizens also spotted a charm of the character hanging off Lisa’s bag in another Instagram Story.

Other superstars seen with Labubu toys are Thai actress Junji Janjira and actor Mario Maurer.

Singaporeans have joined in on the hype too.

Back in August, during the Pop Toy Show at Marina Bay Sands, people fought for the limited edition Labubu toys, including a Singapore-exclusive Merlion pendant.

It was so bad that the police had to be called in on the first day of the event.

Some of our politicians seem to be a fan of the character too.

On Sept 22, Lam Pin Min, chairman of the Sengkang West branch of People’s Action Party (PAP), posted pictures on Facebook of a Labubu doll dressed up in the party’s signature white attire complete with a pair of black spectacles.

The adorable doll even attended a grocery distribution event.

“We have always looked out for and will continue to care for our seniors and underprivileged in the community!” Lam wrote in the post.

“We also welcome Labubu, our latest and cutest volunteer to join us in our mission to serve with humility and love!”

A video of the doll on duty was also posted on Marcus Loh’s TikTok page on Sept 23. He is the chairperson of PAP’s Sengkang East branch.

@bookmarc.sg ⛅️ @papsingapore #TeamSengkang kicked off our Sunday bright and early at #CompassvaleCrescent, building upon our recent heartfelt engagements with residents and families at #RivervaleShores during the National Day celebrations. 💕 This time, accompanied by #Labubu, we were thrilled to bless our residents with groceries, reaffirming the care and inclusion that our broader #SengkangGRC community stands for. We’re deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve. #PAP4SG #Sengkang ♬ original sound – Marcus Loh

In the short clip, the members are seen passing the Labubu toy around before placing it in front of a bag of groceries meant for seniors at Compassvale Crescent.

  • Hidden from the world, North Korea have nurtured football’s latest golden generation | Women’s football

They’re coming for you. They’re coming for you. North Korea’s women’s football age-group pathway teams, they’re coming for. Well, pretty much anyone in their way, it seems, after the weekend.

As elite club football pored in microscopic detail over the fallout from events at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening, something remarkable, if a little less advertised, was happening in Bogotá. Three days on from the final of the Fifa women’s under‑20 World Cup final, it is worth scrolling back over the full sweep of North Korea’s run to that point, which reached its glorious end note on Sunday night, and in the process opened a new angle on any reasonable assessment of the team performance of the season.

The Chollima (nickname explanation: indestructible mythic winged horse) arrived in Colombia in August with a 21-women squad drawn from six domestic teams. The league is hugely popular back home, but these are essentially players unknown to the rest of the world.

They kicked off on 2 September with a 6-2 thrashing of Argentina in Cali. Three days later they beat Costa Rica 9-0 in a game that featured eight goalscorers. Three days after that North Korea put away the Netherlands 2-0 to seal top spot in the group.

The knockout phase began with a 5-2 cuffing aside of Austria. And from there North Korea’s endgame was pretty much perfect, with victories against Brazil (senior world ranking: No 8), the USA (No 1) and Japan (No 7), all without conceding a goal. End result: played seven, won seven, aggregate score 25-4.

They did it brilliantly too, producing, from the TV footage, a whirl of interplay and high-class finishing. Even the winner in the final was a beauty, scored by Choe Il-son, the hyper-talented 17-year-old cutting inside on the right, gliding past a defender, then shooting left‑footed into the roof of the net via a deflection.

Choe might have had a hat-trick on the day and looks an awesome prospect, scooting about like a combination of teenage Wayne Rooney and teenage Michael Owen, all fearlessly clever direct running, a rogue state Endrick. It is hard to imagine there is a better 17-year-old anywhere.

Back home, Choe plays for Pyongyang’s April 25 National Defence Sports Club. She will now disappear behind the veil, away from international competition. But not just yet. She is also eligible for the under-17 World Cup next month in the Dominican Republic (birth date, 1 January 2007; cut-off date, also 1 January 2007), where North Korea’s re-emergent women have a chance to make it a clean sweep of the Fifa age groups, including a 23 October meeting with England, who are presumably already all over the footage of what awaits them.

Choe Il-son (right) lit up the under-20 World Cup with her fearless style of play. Photograph: Julian Medina/SPP/Shutterstock

It is important to stress that the success of North Korea’s age-group teams will only be surprising to those who haven’t been following the run of things. North Korea has long been a force in women’s football, the players cloistered outside competition, but the senior team rarely out of the top end of the rankings over the past 20 years.

But for the neutral, watching this was also a reminder of that most cliched and degraded of notions – sport’s ability to surprise and dissolve preconceptions. It’s North Korea, dude. How do you expect them to play? Tireless robot-pressing? A kind of unsmiling insect football enacted for the love of Dear Leader?

In practice the North Korean style was energetic and high pressure, but also free, creative and fun, all inventive high-speed combinations. The players were engaging and a joy to watch. When Choe missed a chance in the opening minutes of the final there was a lovely moment as Sin Hyang, her attacking partner, ran across to hug her and ruffle her hair like an elder sibling, which certainly makes a change from a sulky arms‑wide gesture and moaning to the bench about not getting a pass.

But what about the shadowy team staff? The propaganda merchants in the background? Yes, a Wikipedia click does suggest the women’s senior team manager appears to have repeatedly threatened America with nuclear war – “its cities will be transformed into towering infernos” – but wait, it’s a faulty link. This is in fact a different Kim Myong-chol, not the well-known state propagandist but the 39-year-old ex-footballer of the same name, who didn’t actually say any of that. Phew. Close one, the internet!

More widely, women’s football in North Korea is a fascinating story. The tale has been told often of party officials returning with an outreach plan from the 1986 Fifa summit where the Norwegian delegate, Ellen Wille, literally screamed on stage in frustration, demanding a proper women’s World Cup.

Seeing an opportunity, the regime instigated football in schools and villages and created a national league where players were given accommodation and employment in the capital. Success followed. North Korea won the Asian Cup in 2001, 2003 and 2008.

Then came the great interruption. In 2011 five national‑team players tested positive for a rare steroid. The excuse offered was the use of a traditional medicine made from the glands of a musk deer, applied after the players were struck by lightning. Oddly enough, Fifa didn’t buy this and North Korea were banned from the 2015 World Cup, lost their ranking position, failed to qualify in 2019 partly as a result, then went into major isolation during the pandemic, re-emerging only towards the end of 2023.

As a result, this is more or less an entirely new generation, reared in isolation. Naturally, given the history, given the lack of contact, there will be some eyebrow‑raising over their startling degree of effervescence. But it is also an exciting notion, something that speaks to a long distant past, before total knowledge and access, when sport was a large, atomised place, when teams, athletes and ways of playing would emerge only through the cycle of international tournaments.

Pyongyang citizens at the Kaeson metro station read about the Chollima’s triumph in Colombia. Photograph: Jon Chol Jin/AP

The evidence of Colombia is that North Korea have something that looks, with the benefit of the surprise element, like a golden generation. Next month will be another showcase for a group of players who mature around the next senior World Cup in Brazil in three years’ time. So much can happen before then, but it is an exciting element. Can you imagine the sheer, cinematic difficulty for Fifa, for its corporate handshakers, for the flag-obsessed US elements, of processing a North Korean win?

Colombia may not have offered any real insight into the world’s most opaque nation state. But sport does have the power to make human connections, and this is at the very least a window into something else beyond the stories of dictatorial oppression and poverty. Plus, if there’s any chance at all of seeing Choe in Europe, can someone out there please get on the blower to Pyongyang and rustle up a little tiki-taka diplomacy.

  • Where Can We Find Su Filindeu? The Rarest And Most Endangered Pasta In The World

Where Can We Find Su Filindeu? The Rarest And Most Endangered Pasta In The World

Pasta is an incredibly versatile Italian dish that has been well-absorbed by other cultures around the world. For some people, it can be one of the simplest dishes to cook. On the other hand, there exists a rare variety of pasta that even expert chefs fail to replicate. We are talking about Su Filindeu, which is said to be the rarest pasta in the world. It’s a very specific pastoral traditional recipe in Sardinia – a large Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s so difficult and time-consuming to prepare, that for 300 years only the women of a single Sardinian family knew how to make this pasta, reported BBC.

A video posted by digital creator @sortedfood is going viral on Instagram, showing this rarest pasta in the world. “Until recently, only three people on the planet were making it,” the video says.

‘Su Filindeu’ translates to “the threads of God”. For more than 300 years, the recipe and technique have only been passed down through the “women in Abraini’s family – each of whom have guarded it tightly before teaching it to their daughters,” reported BBC. However, now the recipe is endangered and many people have even attempted to learn it, but failed. Celebrity chef and restaurateur Jamie Oliver is one of them.

In 2016, Oliver took to his Instagram handle and wrote, “Filindeu pasta in Sardinia one of the rarest pastas in the world !!! It’s amazing and very hard to make I’ve been failing for 2 hours but I think now I can go home and practice for a year or two !!! Which I will try and do. It’s good to be humbled…Seriously this pasta blew my mind !!!! Super Food Family classics big love Jamie xx oh it’s cooked in a broth made from sheep and very fresh pecorino it’s very very very delicious.”

How Is Su Filindeu Pasta Made From Scratch?

Su Filindeu is made following an amazing but very difficult and time-consuming process.

First, a pasta dough is prepared using durum (semolina) flour, water, and a little bit of salt. They take the dough, fold it over, and stretch it. This process is repeated. Every time they stretch, you get multiple strands. The process is followed to make 256 perfectly even strands with the tips of your fingers, and then the needle-thin wires are stretched diagonally across a circular frame in an intricate three-layer pattern.

When the three layers are formed, the base is taken outside to dry in the Sardinian sun. After several hours, the layers harden into delicate sheets of white razor-thin threads resembling stitched lace. These are then broken into circular sheets and packed into boxes.

How Is Su Filindeu Pasta Cooked?

Su Filindeu is cooked by simmering the pasta in sheep’s or mutton broth. The pasta is cooked for about 3 minutes until al dente. It is served in a bowl with the broth and pecorino (an Italian hard cheese produced from sheep’s milk) is sprinkled on top.

  • From Social Media Likes To Lifestyle, How Millennials And Gen Z Are Shaping Their Way To A New World, Literally!

From Social Media Likes To Lifestyle, How Millennials And Gen Z Are Shaping Their Way To A New World, Literally!

These tech-savvy generations with their smartphones glued to their hands, are setting the pace for everything from e-commerce explosions to eco-friendly revolutions—“Buy Now, Pay Later” options or turning their ethical compass into spending power.

Hence, Millennials and Gen Z are rewriting the rules of consumption and they’re doing it with style.

42 Statistics on Gen Z Spending Habits

Millennials And Gen Z Changing Global Consumption Patterns

Millennials those who are born between 1981-1996 and Generation Z, born between 1997-2012 are reshaping global consumption patterns in many ways than one. Their preferences, shaped by technology, values around sustainability, and a need for personalization, are driving key changes across industries.

So what are the key factors behind these shifts, supported by relevant data, as we examine their impact on businesses and markets?

    1. Digital-Native Behaviors Giving Rise To E-Commerce and Social Media Shopping

Since, Millennials and Gen Z have grown up with the internet, smartphones, and social media, it has impacted and influenced their shopping behaviours in more ways than one.

As a result, E-commerce has experienced rapid growth due to these tech-savvy generations.

According to eMarketer, global e-commerce sales reached $5.2 trillion in 2021, and a significant portion of this demand comes from Millennials and Gen Z consumers.

Likewise, a Shopify study revealed that 67% of Millennials and 63% of Gen Z prefer shopping online over physical stores. Moreover, social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have become integral to their shopping habits.

According to McKinsey, Gen Z, in particular, is seen engaging with influencers and digital content to discover new products, with 54% of Gen Z using social media for product research.

These platforms have blurred the lines between content consumption and e-commerce as they provide tailored shopping experiences and direct links to purchase.

    2. Value-Driven Consumption Aiming At Sustainability, Ethical Choices

Notably, both Millennials and Gen Z place significant importance on environmental sustainability and ethical practices; hence, they are more likely to support brands that align with their values, such as reducing carbon footprints, using sustainable materials, and promoting social causes.

A 2022 study by First Insight showed that 73% of Gen Z and 62% of Millennials are willing to pay more for sustainable products, emphasising their priority on ethical consumption.

This generational shift has accelerated the growth of sustainable and eco-friendly industries and according to Statista the global market for sustainable fashion is projected to have reached $8.25 billion in 2023.

Additionally, the rise of secondhand marketplaces like ThredUp and Depop, popular with younger consumers, demonstrates their commitment to reducing waste.

To give it some perspective, ThredUp’s 2022 Resale Report found that the secondhand clothing market grew 24 times faster than traditional retail in 2021, driven by Millennials and Gen Z’s desire to extend product life cycles.

    3. Experience Over Material Goods

It also has been noted that it is experiences, rather than material possessions, that hold more appeal for these younger generations.

According to a 2021 Eventbrite survey, 78% of Millennials prefer to spend money on experiences over goods, such as travel, dining, and entertainment.

Hence, the alignment has created growth in industries related to leisure, tourism, and digital experiences (such as video games and virtual events).

Gen Z, in particular, has grown up with access to technology that facilitates experiences through virtual means.

In the gaming sector, Gen Z is the primary demographic, accounting for 40% of global gaming revenue. Similarly, demand for streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Spotify has surged, with these generations preferring on-demand, personalized content.

The global streaming market, which reached $100 billion in 2021, is largely driven by this shift in preferences.

Gen Z Buying Habits: What Gen Z Spends On & Why Marketers Need to Care

    4. Financial Responsibility and “Buy Now, Pay Later” Services

Surprisingly, Millennials and Gen Z are known for their cautious approach to financial management, perhaps shaped by the financial crises, the rise in student loan debt, and economic uncertainty.

Hence, traditional credit cards are often avoided in favour of more flexible financing options. The “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) model has surged in popularity, with companies like Klarna, Afterpay, and Affirm catering to this demand.

According to Worldpay’s 2022 Global Payments Report, BNPL accounted for 2.1% of global e-commerce transactions in 2021, and this figure is expected to rise as younger consumers favour short-term instalment plans.

    5. Health and Wellness Focus

Both Millennials and Gen Z are also driving demand in the health and wellness industry. Their top priority is mental and physical well-being, resulting in significant growth in fitness products, organic foods, and mental health apps.

According to the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness market was valued at $4.4 trillion in 2020, with Millennials and Gen Z accounting for much of this demand.

For example, plant-based diets are particularly popular among these groups, with 65% of Gen Z and 79% of Millennials reporting they are willing to incorporate more plant-based foods into their diets, according to a 2022 study by Bloomberg Intelligence.

This shift has fueled the rise of companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods, and it is expected that the plant-based food market will grow to $162 billion by 2030.

Shopping Habits of Gen Z - Storyly

    In India, CLSA’s Report

Urban Indians are ditching old-school retail and FMCG buys for the thrill of experiences, travel, and endless food deliveries, according to CLSA’s latest report.

    Traditional consumption? That’s so yesterday.

Take Sunday, for instance: more than 1 lakh people were left heartbroken after queuing up for Coldplay tickets, only to watch them sell out in minutes. But don’t sweat it—Chris Martin and co. have added a third show to keep up with India’s insatiable demand.

And if you’re desperate enough, you can snag a resale ticket—if you’re willing to shell out five times the original price.

Not to be outdone, Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh just sold 2.5 lakh tickets at an average of $90 each, while Dua Lipa and Bryan Adams have also left fans scrambling for tickets.

These concert sprees have already pumped Rs 350-400 crore into the economy—nearly 40% of what some fast-food chains make in a whole quarter.

Heartbreakingly, Millennials and Gen Z aren’t looking to splurge on burgers and sodas anymore, instead their wallets are going toward experiences, fast fashion, luxe beauty products, and premium gadgets.

But don’t think the food delivery giants are sweating it—Zomato and Swiggy are still riding high, with Zomato named CLSA’s top pick.

Zomato’s food delivery biz has seen over 25% growth quarter after quarter, miles ahead of the sluggish single-digit gains from fast-food chains. And with Paytm’s ticketing business now under its belt, Zomato is ready to serve up a full menu of experiences—from booking restaurants to snapping up concert tickets—all in one app.

CLSA is bullish on Zomato, bumping its target price up to Rs 353 per share, a 21.5% upside from the previous Rs 290.5.

And it’s not just Zomato cashing in—MakeMyTrip and Nykaa are thriving too.

Beauty sales on Nykaa skyrocketed 28%, airline bookings on MMYT soared 29%, and Trent’s fashion sales surged 22% in Q1 FY2025.

The Shopping Behaviours of Gen Z and Millennials

Hence, the future of spending in India?

Well, it’s all about the experience!

The Last Bit, In an era where instant gratification reigns supreme, Millennials and Gen Z are rewriting the rules of retail.

These digital natives are turning to e-commerce platforms as their go-to for everything—from groceries to high-end fashion—with a click of a button.

These tech-savvy cohorts prefer to shop from the comfort of their homes, often influenced by their favourite social media personalities. According to eMarketer, global e-commerce sales reached a whopping $5.2 trillion in 2021, and these two generations are largely responsible for that surge.

Likewise, Social media has become the new storefront, where Instagram influencers and TikTok stars serve as virtual sales reps, guiding Gen Z and Millennials toward their next “must-have” product. With 67% of Millennials and 63% of Gen Z opting for online shopping, traditional retail is scrambling to keep up.

Unlike their predecessors, Millennials and Gen Z are not just consumers—they’re conscious consumers. For them, buying something isn’t just about fulfilling a need; it’s about aligning with their values. Whether it’s eco-friendly packaging, fair trade certifications, or supporting social causes, these generations are willing to put their money where their mouth is.

In fact, 73% of Gen Z and 62% of Millennials are willing to pay more for sustainable products, according to a study by First Insight.

Hence, this shift in values has ignited a global push for ethical consumption, forcing brands to rethink their strategies giving way to the rise of sustainable fashion to eco-friendly beauty products.

Businesses are waking up to the reality that if they don’t go green, they might not survive in this new age of consumer activism and the credit for that goes to Millennials and Gen Z!

  • At the UN, world leaders try to lay out a vision for the future — and actually make it happen

At the UN, world leaders try to lay out a vision for the future — and actually make it happen

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. General Assembly adopted a “Pact for the Future” to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Now comes the hard part: uniting the world’s divided nations to move quickly to implement its 56 actions.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres thanked the 193-member world body for approving the pact and unlocking the door for nations to join forces to tackle challenges ranging from climate change and artificial intelligence to escalating conflicts and increasing inequality and poverty — and improve the lives of the world’s more than 8 billion people.

“We are here to bring multilateralism back from the brink,” he said. “Now it is our common destiny to walk through it. That demands not just agreement, but action.”

The 42-page pact was adopted at Sunday’s opening of a two-day “Summit of the Future,” which continues Monday. Among leaders slated to address the summit are Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin.

Whether the pact would be adopted was still a question when the assembly meeting began on Sunday. In fact, there was so much suspense that Guterres had three prepared speeches, one for approval, one for rejection, and one if things weren’t clear, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Russia’s Vershinin launched the opening salvo. He proposed an amendment that would have significantly watered down the pact. “No one is happy with this pact,” he said.

It turned out he was wrong. Africa’s 54 nations opposed Russia’s amendments and speaking on their behalf, the Republic of Congo countered with a motion not to vote on the amendments. Mexico supported the Africans, and in a vote on their motion, the Africans got support from 143 countries,, with only six countries supporting Russia — Iran, Belarus, North Korea, Nicaragua, Sudan and Syria. 15 countries abstained.

Assembly President Philémon Yang then put the pact to a vote and banged his gavel, signifying the consensus of all U.N. member nations that was required for approval — to vigorous applause.

Russia has made significant inroads in Africa — in countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Central African Republic — and the continent’s rejection of its amendments along with Mexico, a major Latin American power, was seen as a blow to Moscow by some diplomats and observers.

Guterres, clearly relieved at the outcome, then issued a challenge to the leaders: Implement the pact. Prioritize dialogue and negotiations. End “wars tearing our world apart” from the Middle East to Ukraine and Sudan. Reform the powerful U.N. Security Council. Accelerate reforms of the international financial system. Ramp up a transition from fossil fuels. Listen to young people and include them in decision-making.

The U.N.’s main bloc of developing countries — the Group of 77, which now has 134 members, including China — echoed Guterres in a speech by Ugandan Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.

“This pact should not become another futile exercise, but must garner political will and commitment across all levels of global leadership to pragmatically address current issues and lay a foundation for solutions for our future global progress and challenges,” he said.

Nabbanja stressed that the future should be “free from any oppression” and close widening gaps between developed and developing countries The G77 regrets that the pact doesn’t recognize actions that developed countries should take to close the gap, he said.

In a rare move at a high-level U.N. meeting where leaders often exceed the announced time limit, Yang announced at the start of their speeches that they would be muted after five minutes. Among those who kept talking after their mics were silenced: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al Sabah and Irish President Michael Higgins.

The Pact for the Future says world leaders are gathering “at a time of profound global transformation,” and it warns of “rising catastrophic and existential risks” that could tip people everywhere “into a future of persistent crisis and breakdown.”

Guterres singled out a number of key provisions in the pact and its two accompanying annexes, a Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations.

The pact commits world leaders to reform the 15-member Security Council, to make it more reflective of today’s world and “redress the historical injustice against Africa,” which has no permanent seat, and to address the under-representation of the Asia-Pacific region and Latin America.

It also “represents the first agreed multilateral support for nuclear disarmament in more than a decade,” Guterres said, and it commits “to steps to prevent an arms race in outer space and to govern the use of lethal autonomous weapons.”

The Global Digital Compact “includes the first truly universal agreement on the international governance of artificial intelligence,” the U.N. chief said.

As for human rights, Guterres said, “In the face of a surge in misogyny and a rollback of women’s reproductive rights, governments have explicitly committed to removing the legal, social and economic barriers that prevent women and girls from fulfilling their potential in every sphere.”

Man City ‘could be expelled from the Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup AND Carabao Cup’ if they are found guilty of breaking financial rules in football’s ‘trial of the century’

    • Many Premier League clubs thought to want a relegation if City found guilty
    • Rules of domestic and international tournaments cast doubt on future there too
    • The hearing into the club’s 115 alleged financial rule breaches began on Monday

Manchester City reportedly face being ‘expelled from all competitions’, not just the Premier League, if they are found guilty of breaking financial rules.

The hearing into Manchester City’s 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules began on Monday with the club accused of financial impropriety spanning nine years from 2009.

The League charged City with a failure to provide accurate financial information and a failure to provide accurate details for player and manager payments.

An investigation was sparked by Der Spiegel publishing Football Leaks documents in 2018 and City stand accused of funnelling money from the club’s owners through sponsors in the United Arab Emirates.

Many thought the sternest punishment lying in wait would be relegation, with points deductions and fines also potential penalties, but it has now been claimed, as per The Telegraph, that they could be kicked out of every tournament they compete in.

To make matters worse their involvement in the Champions League, should they be found guilty of rule breaches, seems far from assured

It has previously been reported that most Premier League sides would not accept a one-off points deduction if City were found guilty, with many demanding an eviction from the division.

Now a look into the rules of English football’s two domestic tournaments has shown that their future participation in these competitions could be in doubt.

Clause 31 of the FA Cup rules states: ‘Where a club has been admitted to participate in the competition but is then removed from the league in which it competes (or its league fixtures are suspended), the Professional Game Board [PGB] may remove the club from the competition.’

The PGB consists of representatives from the Premier League and English Football League.

EFL Cup rules similarly define participating clubs as ‘each member from time to time of the league and each member from time to time of the Premier League’.

To make matters worse their involvement in the Champions League, should they be found guilty of rule breaches, seems far from assured – although the competition’s rules are slightly more complicated.

Sides need a Uefa club licence in order to take part in the tournament and the Premier League, Uefa, and the FA all have a voice in the administration of these licences.

As for Fifa’s expanded Club World Cup, starting this summer, regulations do not seem to be publicly available – but involvement in either that competition or the Champions League would be tricky if they were kicked out of domestic football entirely.
